Tennis: Top seed Kvitova withdraws from Eastbourne Posted: EASTBOURNE (AFP) - Wimbledon holder Petra Kvitova will begin her title defence in a week without any official grass-court matches following her Monday withdrawal from the Eastbourne International.I didnt feel well when I came here last Thursday, said Kvitova. I have a sore throat.I have to stay in bed and drink tea and rest. I had to make this decision. I hope to be fine for Wimbledon. Ill stay here in Eastbourne and then slowly move to London.Of course I wanted to play here, but it doesnt make sense to play and then not be ready for Wimbledon, Im not the only one not to play before Wimbledon.Kvitova, who claimed the title at the All England club in 2011 and a year ago was top seed at the final tune-up tournament prior to the start in SW 19.Kvitova has not played since losing in the Roland Garros fourth round. With rain delaying the start of play for several hours at Devonshire Park, the programme was reduced. The 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, playing here for the seventh time, reached the second round with a defeat of Magdelana Rybarikova 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 as a patchy sun finally broke through.Kuznetsova improved to 36-8 career record on grass. While all 16 seeds have byes into the second round, number two Caroline Wozniacki was eagerly preparing for her pre-Wimbledon start after an early exit on the Paris clay nearly a month ago.The fifth-ranked Dane said that making the clay-grass switch is one of the easiest parts of her season.I think automatically I just switch, its a very easy switch for me to go from clay to grass, aid the former year-end number one. Its worse for me to go from hard court to clay, because you have to get the sliding in and stuff. Here it just comes naturally to me. Its easy, and Im like a little kid at a candy store whenever I step on grass for the first time. Its never been an issue for me.American Irina Falconi defeated Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 6-1, 6-1, and 2014 Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova made a winning return after sitting out since February with a foot injury, beating Briton Harriet Dart 6-1, 6-3 and Polona Hercog beat Madison Brengle of the US 7-5, 6-4. |
Football: England beat Norway to reach World Cup quarters Posted: OTTAWA (AFP) - Second-half goals from Steph Houghton and Lucie Bronze booked Englands passage to the quarter-finals of the Womens World Cup on Monday with a 2-1 win over Norway.England had fallen behind to a 54th-minute goal for 1995 champions Norway off a Solveig Gulbrandsen header. But seven minutes later, English captain Houghton equalised and Bronze scored the winner on 76 minutes at Ottawas Lansdowne Stadium.England, who have never before won a knockout game at the World Cup, next plays Canada on Saturday in Vancouver.England coach Mark Sampson made four changes to his lineup with midfielder Katie Chapman, defenders Laura Bassett, Bronze and Claire Rafferty all coming on.But in a drab first half, Norway had the most chances, with Karen Bardsley superbly denying Isabell Helovsen early as England struggled in the Ottawa heat.Back after the break, Norway broke the deadlock with Gulbrandsen, at 34 years the most experienced member of the Norwegian team, heading in off a corner for a goal which was confirmed by goalline technology.Houghton headed sixth-ranked England level again seven minutes later following a Fara Williams corner. And Bronze added the second with 14 minutes to go following good work from Jill Scott and Jodie Taylor which allowed the defender to fire a powerful shot into the back of the net that goalkeeper Ingrid Hjelmseth got a hand upon but could not keep out.England have never gone beyond the quarter-final in their three previous appearances, in 1995, 2007 and 2011 so had never captured a knockout game before. The World Cup has a last-16 round for the first time as the tournament has been expanded to 24 teams.European runners-up Norway, Olympic champions in 2000 and World Cup winners in 1995, now head home. The Norwegians, ranked 11th, finished second in Group B and held Germany, two-time champions, to a 1-1 draw last week.Colombia will be bidding to create more upsets when they take on footballing giants the United States in their last 16 match in Edmonton later Monday. |
Million of smokers may have undiagnosed lung disease Posted: MIAMI (AFP) - More than half of current and former smokers who can pass basic lung function tests may suffer from lung diseases that have gone undiagnosed, researchers said Monday. The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine included nearly 9,000 people, aged 45-80, who had smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for 10 years.About half of those in the study were considered disease-free based on their lung-function tests, said the JAMA article. But when researchers looked at other criteria, including respiratory symptoms, CT scans, medications use and quality of life issues, they found that 55 percent of the disease-free study participants had some form of respiratory related impairment. Many were in the early stages of chronic pulmonary obstruction disease, or COPD, which is the third-leading killer in the United States. Forty-two percent had emphysema or airway thickening, while 23 percent had significant shortness of breath.Smokers who have normal lung-function tests often have significant respiratory disease. Many of those smokers likely have the early stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, said Elizabeth Regan, lead author and assistant professor of medicine at National Jewish Health. We hope these findings will help debunk the myth of the healthy smoker and highlight the importance of smoking prevention and cessation to prevent lung disease and other long-term effects of smoking. |
Eueo stable vs dollar a Greek debt deal shows life Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro held steady against the dollar on Monday as signs mounted that Greece was making some progress with creditors over its bailout after five months of deadlock.Traders appeared cautiously optimistic that a deal with the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund could be taking shape.Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said Monday that Athenss new proposals to reach a deal were a welcome step and a step in a positive direction, so I think it is also an opportunity to get that deal later this week and that is what we will work for.Greece offered economic reforms in exchange for the last payment of 7.2 billion euros from the current program. Without that money, Greece may not be able to make a 1.5-billion-euro repayment to the IMF due on June 30, risking a default and possible chaotic exit from the eurozone. If the anecdotes are correct, the odds of a deal are higher than they were late last week but still are barely better than 50-50, said Moodys Analytics. The prospect of a Greek deal pushed European equity markets sharply higher, while Wall Street stocks had a good day, sending the Nasdaq to a new record close. It looks like Greeks are going to give ground on actions on spending and it may just be enough to get to the finish line, said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management. The euro traded at $1.1340 around 2100 GMT, little changed from its Friday level of $1.1349.Interestingly, the FX market only seems marginally interested in what is going on in Greece, said Kathleen Brooks of Forex.com.This headline-driven activity is likely to last until a final decision has been made on Greece, which should happen by the end of this week.... Expect plenty of volatility, especially in the stock markets, she said. |
Malala presses World Bank, UN to set goals on education Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai urged the World Bank and UN on Monday to raise the focus of education in their new millenium goals.Malala, who in 2012 survived a severe gunshot in the head for her support of girls schools in Pakistan, met with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim to discuss the coming package of official Sustainable Development Goals the United Nations plans to release later this year.It is very important that we raise our voices to speak out for girls deprived of a secondary education, Malala said.To help all girls and boys achieve their full potential, we should make sure the Sustainable Development Goals include a commitment to fund a 12-year quality and free education for all children, especially girls, the 17-year-old said.In September the United Nations will weigh proposals for the Sustainable Development Goals, a series of targets for countries to achieve over the next 15 years. They will replace the Millenium Development Goals created in 2000 for the first 15 years of the century.A meeting is scheduled in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in mid-July to find ways to finance the new targets. |
IS hangs 2 boys for eating in Ramazan: monitor Posted: BEIRUT (AFP) - The Islamic State group hanged two youths Monday after accusing them of eating during daylight hours in the Muslim fasting month of Ramazan, the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights said.Residents of the village of Mayadeen in Deir Ezzor province reported that IS hanged from a crossbar two boys aged under 18 near the HQ of the Hissba, the jihadist police, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.The children have been suspended by ropes from a pole since noon, and they were still there in the late evening, he said.Apparently, they were caught eating.A placard was attached to the bodies reading They broke the fast with no religious justification.Throughout the month of Ramazan, which began on Thursday, believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn until sunset.IS, which controls swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq where it has created a self-proclaimed caliphate, advocates an extreme view of the application of Islamic law, or sharia. The jihadists do not hesitate to impose brutal punishments including beheadings, stonings, floggings and crucifixions. |
30 killed in northeast Nigeria by 2 girl suicide bombers Posted: BAUCHI (AP) - Two girls blew themselves up on Monday near a crowded mosque in northeast Nigerias biggest city, killing about 30 people, witnesses said.It is the fourth suicide bombing this month in Maiduguri, which is the birthplace of the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group.Fishmonger Idi Idrisa said one teenager exploded as she approached the mosque crowded with people from the nearby Baga Road fish market, performing afternoon prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. The second teen appeared to run away and blew up further away, killing only herself, he said.Civilian defense fighter Sama Ila Abu said he counted at least 30 corpses as he helped collect the dead. Both men said said there were many injured.Boko Haram has kidnapped hundreds and hundreds of girls and women and the numbers of female suicide bombers has raised fears that it is using the captives in its campaign.A military bomb disposal expert has told the AP that most bombs carried by girls and women have remote detonation devices, meaning the carrier cannot control the explosion.Boko Haram has stepped up attacks since Nigerias new President Muhammadu Buhari announced the military command center is moving from the capital Abuja to Maiduguri in Borno State. The attacks come as Nigeria and its neighbors are preparing to strengthen a multinational army that this year drove Boko Haram out of towns and villages where it had set up a so-called Islamic caliphate. But bombings and hit-and-run attacks have continued, along with cross-border raids. On Thursday, a group of the extremists attacked two towns in neighboring Niger, killing at least 40 people, the government said.In its first attack on Chad, suicide bombers a week ago attacked two buildings including the national police academy in NDjamena, killing at least 33 people. |
Oil Prices rise with focus on Greece, Iran Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose modestly on Monday as dealers focused on hopes for a Greek bailout deal and a possible return of Iranian supplies to an oversupplied global market. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery edged up seven cents to $59.68 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea crude for August closed at $63.34 a barrel in London, up 32 cents from Fridays settlement.Eurozone leaders, holding an emergency summit in Brussels on Monday, were cautiously optimistic about eleventh-hour reform proposals from Greece as they met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Brussels. The president of the European Union, Donald Tusk, said new reform offers made by the leftist Greek government were the first real proposals for many weeks from the government, giving hope for an end to the five-month standoff between the Greek government and its EU and International Monetary Fund creditors before a June 30 deadline. If the talks fail, Greece will likely default on an IMF debt payment of around 1.5 billion euros ($1.7 billion), possibly leading to its exit from the eurozone.Nevertheless, Daniel Ang of Phillip Futures in Singapore said Irans negotiations with world powers over its nuclear program are going to give headwinds for... prices this week.If Tehran and six powers which want to restrict its nuclear activities reach agreement, the power have agreed to gradually scale back sanctions imposed since 2012 that have slashed Irans oil exports.A return of Iranian supplies could cause another round of oversupply in the global market, Ang said. |

Guptill confident England tour a 'success' Posted: MANCHESTER (AFP) - New Zealand opener Martin Guptill believes the teams tour of England has been a success, regardless of the outcome of Tuesdays concluding Twenty20 international at Old Trafford. The Black Caps shared a two-Test series 1-1 before the World Cup finalists went down 3-2 in a thrilling one-day series that finished with Englands dramatic three-wicket victory at the Riverside on Saturday.Meanwhile the likes of fast bowler Matt Henry, seamer Ben Wheeler and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner have all shown promise in the early stages of their respective international careers. It has been a success, Guptill, who made a fine 67 at the Riverside told reporters at Old Trafford on Monday. While it was disappointing to lose the one-day series and only draw the Test series, the guys that weve brought in -- Matt Henry did very well on his Test debut and in his first couple of Tests, while Ben Wheeler and Mitch Santner have been successes for us in the one-day form, he added. Theyve all got long careers ahead of them.Reflecting on the mood within the New Zealand camp, the 28-year-old Guptill said: Its a pretty amazing series we just played in and unfortunately we came out on the wrong side. But the guys are still pretty confident and well be up for tomorrow (Tuesday) night.Weve come here to win. Hopefully we can end the tour on a high and leave with a smile on our faces.England and New Zealand have played in a succession of thrilling matches and Guptill, a veteran of 33 Tests and 113 ODIs, said: The whole tour, the Test matches and the one-day series was pretty exciting.I had a chat with (England fast bowler) Steven Finn after the last game and we both said what an amazing series it was. Its fantastic to have been a part of.New Zealand thrashed a lacklustre England by eight wickets en route to a World Cup final where they were themselves well beaten by Australia in Melbourne in March. However, Guptill said New Zealand expected England would be harder to beat on home soil.We always knew they were going to be tough in their own conditions. They are very smart here in the way they play their cricket. We knew it was going to be tough. I dont see that changing tomorrow so we are going to have be right on top of our game. All the time theyve been in England, New Zealand have been lauded for the sportsmanlike manner in which theyve conducted themselves as well as the quality of their cricket. The respect between both sides has been right up there, said Guptill, who insisted New Zealand, under the captaincy of Brendon McCullum, did not go out of their way to create a good impression. We just try to go out enjoy playing cricket and having fun, Guptill said. Thats the way we try and play, thats the way we are going to continue playing -- just go out there and express ourselves and have fun doing it. |

Football: Brazil will not appeal Neymar ban Posted: SANTIAGO (AFP) - Brazil said Monday they will not appeal against a four-match ban on captain Neymar which will rule him out of the rest of the Copa America tournament. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said the Barcelona superstar would leave the team base in Santiago on Monday.During a meeting on Sunday night between Neymar and the technical management it was decided that the CBF would respect CONMEBOLs decision, said a CBF statement.Neymar himself said he couldnt bare to stick around now that hes no longer involved in matches.Where Iam at right now, I would always be with the team, pushing my teammates towards victory, but staying here just to train, that would kill me from the inside...without any pleasure, the forward wrote on his Instagram account.I was waiting with great faith and hope that I could continue playing with Brazil in this Copa, unfortunately that has not been possible for me.I know that my presence in the team is important, as is that of all the other players who, more than ever, must remain concentrated on the forthcoming matches. Its awful training without preparing for something and such a situation would run the risk of me picking up an accidental injury, which would make things even more difficult.Neymar was sent off at the end of Brazils Copa game against Colombia last Wednesday when he appeared to headbutt an opposing player. The South American confederation, CONMEBOL, banned him for four matches on Friday. Brazil had indicated they wanted to appeal and protested at Neymars treatment by referees during the tournament. The coaching staff and the player hope that the same rigour with which CONMEBOL punished Neymar will be applied in all competitions organised by the entity, the statement added. The coaching staff of the Brazilian squad regret the loss of another important player for this tournament. The Brazilian squad said Neymar is leaving the delegation which is based at the Sheraton hotel in Santiago on Monday.Brazil ensured they went into the quarter-finals as top team from Group C by beating Venezuela 2-1 on Sunday. They will now face Group B runners-up Paraguay on Saturday. |
