Tennis: Pennetta advances into Serena's path

Tennis: Mononucleosis blamed for Kvitova's struggles

Posted:

PRAGUE (AFP) - Czech star Petra Kvitovas recent drop in form has been blamed on the world number four suffering from mononucleosis earlier this year.Blood tests showed that she had mononucleosis in the spring, the 25-year-olds spokesman Karel Tejkal told AFP on Monday. The 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion and three-time Fed Cup winner will compete this week in the WTA tournament in Toronto, one of several tune-up events for the US Open starting later this month.Petra can continue her planned programme but under medical supervision, said Tejkal, with the Czech seeded third in Toronto.Kvitova mysteriously disappeared from the circuit at the end of February citing the need to rest. She returned in April for the semi-finals of the Fed Cup which the Czech Republic won 3-1 by beating France. But the defending champion was beaten in the third round of Wimbledon by Serb Jelena Jankovic. Very probably the mononucleosis was the principle cause of her tiredness, added Tejkal.A infectious virus mononucleosis can result in high fever, great fatigue and a sore throat but in some cames can have no apparent symptoms.Kvitova won two titles -- Sydney and Madrid -- this season but only reached the third round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon and fourth round at Roland Garros.

Football: Bayern eye historic fourth title on Pep's swansong

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich kick-off the new Bundesliga season at home to Hamburg on Friday with the Bavarians bidding for an historic fourth league title and Pep Guardiola tight-lipped over his future.Bayerns head coach is about to start the third and final season of his contract and will reveal his future plans over the course of the campaign.Global broadcaster BeIN Sport insists he has already signed a four-year deal to join Manchester City for the 2016/17 season, while Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is eager to extend Peps stay.Bayerns senior figures regularly claim the Bundesliga title remains the priority each season, but Guardiola was brought in to bring Champions League glory to the Bavarians.Having exited the semi-finals at the hands of Real Madrid, then Barcelona in their two seasons under Guardiola, Bayern bosses hope it will be a case of third-time lucky this term.Whatever Guardiola decides, Bayern will have to adjust to life without midfield general Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has quit Bayern after 13 seasons for another famous red shirt at Manchester United.Munich are the big favourites to win the German league again and become the first to win a fourth-straight crown. But Guardiolas men have lost six of their last eight competitive fixtures, including defeat to last seasons runners-up VfL Wolfsburg on penalties in Germanys Super Cup.There were no surprises in Sundays 3-1 win at fifth-tier Noettingen in the first round of the German Cup, though.New signing Arturo Vidal gave the visitors an early lead and after the hosts pulled level, Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski scored for Bayern. It was a good test for the Bundesliga opener on Friday, said Goetze. We are prepared for the season, were in good spirits and were looking forward to it.Bayerns advantage at the top has reduced year on year over the past three seasons and their main rivals are likely to be Wolfsburg and Moenchengladbach again.Borussia Dortmund are an unknown package under new coach Thomas Tuchel, after Jurgen Klopp quit at the end of last season. They are looking to once again challenge Bayerns title stranglehold, which shows only vague signs of weakening.Their record 25-point cushion over Dortmund in the 2012/13 season was reduced to a comfortable 19 points in 2013/14 while they only enjoyed a ten point-lead over Wolves last term.Bayern have boosted their midfield options with Chile international Vidal set to bring his box-to-box energy while Brazil winger Douglas Costa can cover for either injury-prone Arjen Robben or Franck Ribery.Around the league, Germany internationals have returned home with striker Kevin Kuranyi joining Hoffenheim after a five-year stint with Dynamo Moscow and Augsburg winger Piotr Trochowski is back from Sevilla.Yoshinori Muto is the latest big-name Japanese player to grace the Bundesliga having signed for Mainz from FC Tokyo. The Bundesligas new teams are Bavarias Ingolstadt, who are making their debut in Germanys top flight, while Darmstadt are back after a 33-year absence. They failed to stay up on their brief sojourns into the Bundesliga in 1978/79 and 1981/82 and the Lillies will have to prove themselves to avoid a swift return to the second division.Fans are still lapping up live Bundesliga football, though, as an average of 43,500 fans went to each match last season. The figure dwarves Englands Premier League where the average is 36,200, while Spains La Liga has 27,000 fans watching each game and Italys Serie A a modest 22,200.

Russian cosmonauts wrap up spacewalk

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Two Russian cosmonauts on Monday added new equipment outside the International Space Station and took pictures to study its exterior during a five-and-a-half hour spacewalk. The outing was the 188th in support of the space station and the 10th of Gennady Padalkas career, a veteran cosmonaut and grandfather who is serving as commander of the ISS.In June, Padalka, 57, set the world record for the most time spent in space with a total of 803 days. His spacewalking partner was Mikhail Kornienko, 55, undertaking his second walkabout in space.Hours into the rigorous spacewalk, Padalka and Kornienko playfully taunted each other over whose hands were coldest and who had the most spirit, according to live footage broadcast on the websites of the Russian and US space agencies. The spacewalk was over at 1951 GMT, an hour ahead of schedule. It lasted a total of five hours and 31 minutes, NASA said.Padalka and Kornienko installed devices -- known as gap spanners -- on the hull of the station to help facilitate the movement of crew members on future spacewalks, NASA said. They also cleaned windows, installed fasteners on communications antennas, replaced an aging antenna used for the rendezvous and docking of visiting vehicles at Russian docking ports, and took pictures of locations and hardware on Zvezda and nearby modules.Floating against the bright blue oceans and white clouds of Earth, the astronauts filmed the outing with small handheld cameras, constantly communicating with each other and Russian mission control outside Moscow.Once they get out of their spacesuits, they will be able to sample their first bites of space-grown red romaine lettuce that their colleagues have saved for them. Two US and one Japanese astronaut tasted the lettuce earlier in the day Monday.NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren described the leafy greens as awesome.Scott Kelly, who is spending one year aboard the ISS with Kornienko, said the leaf tasted a bit like arugula. The ability to cultivate food during a trip to Mars in the coming decades will be key to surviving the trip, which could last months or years. This payload, and having the ability for us to grow our own food is a big step in that direction, Kelly said. The next spacewalk around the Russian section is set for January or February 2016, space industry official Alexander Kaleri told TASS state news agency on Monday.

Universe 'resting on sofa' as it slowly dies

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - The Universe is experiencing a slow death, like a person resting on the sofa awaiting eternal sleep, according to astronomers from a project which measured the energy generated by 200,000 galaxies. The international team carried out the most precise measurements of energy generation in a large portion of space ever completed and found that it is only half of what it was two billion years ago and fading. The Universe is fated to decline from here on in, like an old age that lasts forever, said Simon Driver from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Western Australia. The Universe has basically plonked itself down on the sofa, pulled up a blanket and is about to nod off for an eternal doze.Researchers used seven of the worlds most powerful telescopes to observe galaxies at 21 different wavelengths, from ultraviolet to the far infrared, as part of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly Survey (GAMA).Observations collected over eight years from the Anglo-Australian Telescope in rural New South Wales state were used in conjunction with those from orbiting space telescopes operated by NASA and the European Space Agency. We used as many space and ground-based telescopes we could get our hands on, to measure the energy output of over 200,000 galaxies across as broad a wavelength range as possible, said Driver, who is presenting the findings to the International Astronomical Union in Hawaii on Monday.Driver said while most of the energy sloshing around in the Universe was created in the aftermath of the Big Bang, additional amounts were constantly being released by stars as they fused elements such as hydrogen and helium together. This newly released energy is either absorbed by dust as it travels through the host galaxy, or escapes into intergalactic space and travels until it hits something such as another star, planet, or very occasionally a telescope mirror, he said.Andrew Hopkins, from the Australian Astronomical Observatory, said while it had been known for some time that the rate at which the Universe was forming stars was declining, the new data showed that the rate of energy production was reducing the same way across all different wavelengths. It doesnt matter which wavelength you look at the Universe in, it is slowing down in its energy production in the same way, Hopkins told AFP via telephone from Hawaii. As the Universe expands and as the rate of expansion accelerates we know that the rate at which galaxies can continue to evolve is going to slow down and this is reflected in the rate that we have been able to measure of how fast they are forming their stars. It is hoped that the survey data will help scientists better understand how different types of galaxies form.Researchers also want to expand their work to map energy production over the entire history of the Universe using new facilities, including the worlds largest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array, which is set to be built in Australia and South Africa over the next decade.

Oil prices rise, ending three-day skid

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rallied Monday, snapping a three-day losing streak as some analysts said the beaten-down commodity could be near a bottom.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in September gained $1.09 at $44.96 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for September delivery jumped $1.80 to $50.41 a barrel in London.People are basically looking for a bargain, said Michael Lynch, analyst at Strategic Energy & Economic Research. There hasnt been a lot of hard news that would explain it, but weve had such a sharp decline in the last week or so, that people feel were close to a bottom and its time to buy in.US oil prices have been on a generally downward path since early July, falling from about $60 a barrel to the mid-$40s on lofty production from the US and some key OPEC members, as well as an uncertain outlook for demand.Citi Futures analyst Tim Evans said oil received a lift from Mondays nearly five percent rise in the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, as well as talk that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries could hold an emergency meeting. The OPEC chatter is more of a recurring trial balloon, Evans said. To date it has only tended to confirm that the Persian Gulf States including Saudi Arabia are not ready to consider a change of course.

Dollar slips vs. euro as Fed officials talk rate hike

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar fell against the euro Monday as Federal Reserve officials comments raised questions about the timing of the central banks plan to raise its key interest rate this year. After last Fridays solid US jobs report for July, many analysts saw support for the Fed to raise its zero-level benchmark federal funds rate in September. Others said the Fed would probably wait until later in the year, or even until 2016, to make the first lift-off since May 2006.Gains for the dollar have proven tougher to hold on to these days, a reflection of the still uncertain climate for Fed policy and how higher borrowing rates have largely been baked into its value, said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions. The Fed began the tightening cycle in September 2007, finally bringing the fed funds rate to essentially zero in late 2008 to help support the economys recovery from the Great Recession. While the job market has improved to near full-employment levels, inflation has remained tepid, well below the Feds 2.0 percent target, and the economy has achieved only a slow recovery, making the decision to tighten credit without derailing growth a tough call.Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer said Monday that low inflation remains a concern, although the Fed thinks it is due to transitory factors such as lower oil prices.Employment has been rising pretty fast relative to previous performance, and yet inflation is very low, Fischer told Bloomberg Television. And the concern about this situation is not to move before we see inflation, as well as employment, returning to more normal levels.Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart appeared to raise the prospect for a hike sooner rather than later. We are getting closer and closer to what feels like a healed state of the economy, Lockhart said in prepared remarks to the Atlanta Press Club.I think the point of liftoff is close.

World T20: BCCI to keep Pakistan away from Mumbai, Nagpur

Posted:

MUMBAI (Agencies) - Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to keep Pakistan away from two venues – Mumbai and Nagpur – in Maharashtra during the World T20 tournament next year.Top officials of the board, in consultation with the Maharashtra government, took this call considering the fact that political parties like Shiv Sena could cause law and order problems in the state.“BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur spoke to government bodies in Maharashtra and they have advised us to not have any Pakistan games as political parties might create some protest and there could be law and order situation in the state. We don’t know what the situation will be between both countries by next year but we don’t want to take any risk,” a top BCCI official was quoted as saying. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is yet to come up with the final draw for ICC T20 WC but it is reliably learnt that India might play in same group as Pakistan and West Indies. There is a chance of India playing against Pakistan in Chennai or Mohali.“We will ensure that such a draw is been made that Pakistan team will not have to play any games in two venues in (Wankhede and VCA) Maharashtra. As the final will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, there will be no problem in Bengal,” the source added.Shiv Sena had earlier opposed participation of Pakistani players in the Pro Kabbadi and hockey leagues in the state. Hence the Indian board did not want to take any chances during the prestigious tournament.

Turkey hit by slew of attacks as U.S. embassy comes under fire

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkey was on Monday hit by a slew of deadly attacks, with six members of the security forces killed and the US consulate in Istanbul hit by a gun attack. The authorities blamed the violence on Kurdish and Marxist radicals, as Ankara presses a two-pronged anti-terror offensive against Islamic State (IS) jihadists and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants following a wave of attacks in the country. The attacks raised new concerns about security throughout Turkey in an escalating cycle of violence that has left a 2013 ceasefire agreed by the PKK in tatters.Four Turkish police officers were killed in a roadside bomb attack, blamed on Kurdish militants, in the southeastern Silopi district of Sirnak province bordering Iraq and Syria, the official Anatolia news agency said.A Turkish soldier was killed in a separate incident when Kurdish militants attacked a military helicopter with rocket launchers in Sirnaks Beytussebap district, the army said.In Istanbul, a suspected suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives at a police station in the Sultanbeyli district just after midnight, wounding ten people, three of them police, the governors office said in a statement.Clashes with police continued throughout the night. Beyazit Ceken, head of the police bomb disposal department, was wounded in the clashes and died of his injuries in hospital, the governors office said.President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later joined mourners at his funeral in Istanbul broadcast live on television. Two militants were killed in the clashes as well as the suicide bomber, the governors office added.- Leftist women attacks US consulate -Meanwhile, two armed women early Monday launched a gun attack against the well-fortified US consulate on the outskirts of Istanbul. One of the two attackers was later arrested after being wounded in clashes with police. The outlawed Marxist Revolutionary Peoples Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) said one of its militants, named as Hatice Asik, had carried out the attack. The DHKP-C has carried out a string of attacks in Turkey in the past, claiming a 2013 suicide attack on the US embassy in Ankara. The authorities have targeted suspected DHKP-C, IS and PKK members in a succession of anti-terror raids in the last two weeks.A consulate spokesperson confirmed that there had been a security incident near the mission and the building remained closed to the public until further notice.A Turkish official in Ankara told AFP that the US consulate attack was linked to the DHKP-C and the Istanbul police station bombing by the PKK.But the Istanbul police attack was also claimed by a smaller leftist group, the Peoples Defence Units (HSB), on its Twitter feed.
