Gul was accused having alleged involvement in Kashmir insurgency, backing militants.General also remained active on the political scene as well, both during and after his career, with his formation of Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and his support for the reinstatement of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Chaudhary Iftikhar. One might have ideological differences with HamidGul but no one can deny his love and loyalty to the country and lslam PakSalutesHameedGul— Ajmal Khan Wazir (@ajmalkwazir) August 15, 2015 Retired high-ranking General officer of PakArmy and Ex-DG ISI (Pakistan) Gen. RugbyU: All Blacks fire World Cup warning, Ireland edge Scots

PARIS (AFP) - New Zealand blasted out an impressive warning Saturday with a 41-13 rout of Australia as Ireland edged Scotland 28-22 on a packed weekend of World Cup dress rehearsals.Thirty-four days out from the start of the 2015 World Cup, the defending champions All Blacks marked skipper Richie McCaws record 142nd Test appearance with a five-try demolition of Australia in Auckland.New Zealands pride was wounded when they lost the Rugby Championship decider 27-19 to the Wallabies a week ago, and they were determined to make amends and retain the Bledisloe Cup for the 13th consecutive year. The All Blacks scored five tries with Dane Coles, Maa Nonu (twice) and Conrad Smith crossing the line along with a penalty try, while Dan Carter booted all five conversions and two penalties. The Wallabies, who have scored at least two tries in their past nine Tests, were limited to one late touchdown by Israel Folau and two Quade Cooper penalties. They came out and put us under a bit of pressure territory wise and possession wise and we stuck together and got turnovers when we needed to get them and slowly put our impression on the game, said Al Blacks coach Steve Hansen. The All Blacks are in Pool C at the World Cup, which starts in England on September 18, along with Argentina, Tonga, Georgia and Namibia.Australia are in Pool A with England, Wales, Fiji and Uruguay. In Dublin, Ireland beat Scotland 28-22 at Lansdowne Road which featured seven tries in all.World number two Ireland were level 7-7 with their visitors at the break after flanker Chris Henry and loose forward Blair Cowan had exchanged tries.Scotland twice led in the second period but further tries from Sean Cronin, Simon Zebo and Luke Fitzgerald just proved decisive for Ireland. The Scots could take heart from seeing skipper Henry Pyrgos and Peter Horne also cross after the interval.Ireland coach Joe Schmidt made 14 changes to the team that beat Wales 35-21 in Cardiff last weekend.Ireland are in Pool D at the World Cup alongside France, Italy, Romania and Canada while Scotland will play in Pool B with South Africa, Samoa, Japan and the United States.- Naiyaravoro hat-trick -In Tokyo, Fijian-born winger Taqele Naiyaravoro gave his hopes of a World Cup call-up by Australia a power of good by scoring a hat-trick of tries in a World XV 45-20 win over Japan.New Zealand scrum-half Andy Ellis scored two more tries for the visitors.Later Saturday, rugby league convert Sam Burgess makes his England debut at centre against France at Twickenham.Burgess, 26, has been fast-tracked into the international set-up after switching codes to play for Bath having helped the South Sydney Rabbitohs win Australian rugby leagues Grand Final.Northampton flanker Calum Clark is the other new boy picked by the World Cup hosts who will be anxious to pick up where they left off following a thrilling 55-35 Six Nations victory over France five months ago.In Buenos Aires, two-time world champions South Africa hope to prevent a second humiliating defeat by Argentina in rapid succession.Argentina scored a stunning 37-25 win in Durban last Saturday -- the first against South Africa in 20 attempts spanning 23 years.Such was the shock, South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer even apologised to the nation for the lacklustre performance.

Creepy Mailboxes With Faces Now 'Celebrities' In Taiwan

Posted:

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A pair of roadside mailboxes that were uniformly bent by a falling signboard during a typhoon earlier this month have become celebrities in Taiwan, drawing steady lines of people to snap photos and inspiring fan merchandise. Many Taiwanese think that the public mailboxes resemble faces, and this side-by-side pair — one green and one red — now looks especially cute because their poles are bent in their mid-section at similar angles. They look like theyre smiling, said Taiwans mail service Chunghwa Post publicity officer surnamed Huang. Thats pretty special. So we see a lot of people out taking photos. The mailboxes, two of 10,986 around Taiwan, gained fame after Typhoon Soudelor ripped across the island Aug. 8, killing eight and injuring 420 before claiming another 21 lives in China. Strong winds tore a signboard from a building in central Taipei, bending the mailboxes to the right on their poles as it fell.Security guards now protect the mailboxes while chuckling fans pose next to them, either bending themselves or pretending to push the boxes. The typhoon wasnt really that bad after all, said Ting Po-yi, 17, a high school student who came from a Taipei suburb to get his photo taken. Some fans have created memorabilia including key chains and mobile phone shells. A website has an app that lets users superimpose the mailboxes onto photos in phones and computers.Chunghwa Post originally planned to remove the boxes Thursday, citing safety concerns. But the postal service announced after a public outcry it would let the boxes stay pending an internal review. In a statement Thursday, it advised crowds not to push or squeeze. The mailboxes can still take letters, which Chunghwa Post is stamping with a special postmark showing the two leaning celebrities, said public relations officer Weng Yao-kuang.The boxes nowadays are usually stuffed.

Cricket: Battered Australia endure another rough day

LONDON (AFP) - Australias preparations for the final Ashes Test against England suffered a blow as Northamptonshires Steven Crook condemned the beleaguered tourists to another dispiriting spell in the field on Saturday. After Fridays opening day of the three-day tour match had been washed out, Australia-born Crooks unbeaten 142 put his fellow countrymen to the sword in Northamptonshires first innings total of 396 all out.Crooks memorable day continued when Australia started their reply as he took a catch to remove David Warner for six off the bowling of Maurice Chambers, with the visitors reaching stumps on 13 for one.Australia have already surrendered the Ashes after a crushing defeat in the fourth Test that left them 3-1 down in the series with only next weeks finale at The Oval remaining. And on the evidence of a lacklustre showing at Northampton, they may struggle to avoid ending the series with another loss.Peter Siddle, Pat Cummins and Fawad Ahmed, all unused by coach Darren Lehman in the Ashes, featured in the tourists bowling attack. But of that trio only Cummins, who took three for 64, found himself in the wickets.All-rounder Mitchell Marsh (four for 56) and spinner Nathan Lyon (three for 93) shared the remaining wickets.Northants openers David Murphy and Ben Duckett put on 68 for the first wicket, but the latter was lbw to Marsh moments after bringing up his half-century.Murphy was out to Lyon after making a painstaking 20, but Kyle Coetzee fired 86 before being bowled by the off-spinner to leave the hosts 212 for six. From that point Crook, a 32-year-old all-rounder from Adelaide, dominated a flagging Australia attack. He smashed 24 fours and four sixes in his 96-ball innings and sharing fifty partnerships with George Munsey, Ben Sanderson and Richard Gleeson.

Israeli Arabs rally for hunger strike Palestinian

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Hundreds of Israeli Arabs staged a peaceful protest Saturday in support of a Palestinian held by Israel who has slipped into a coma after nearly two months on hunger strike.Approximately 200 people including members of parliament joined the rally led by Sheikh Raed Salah, a firebrand preacher who heads the Islamic Movements radical northern wing.Demonstrators at the rally in Wadi Ara, north Israel, carried Palestinian flags and placards calling for the immediate release of 31-year-old Mohammed Allan and an end to his administrative detention, a procedure allowing indefinite detention without charge.Allan, an Islamic Jihad activist who has been held since November, has been on hunger strike since June 18, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Club.On Friday, he lost consciousness at the Barzilai hospital in Ashkelon and was given fluids and salts intravenously, and is breathing with the aid of an artificial respirator.A hospital spokeswoman on Saturday said his condition was stable, noting that the treatment was approved by Allans family and adding that he would stay on the respirator at least until Sunday.Allan had been refusing food as well as medical treatment, and it was feared he might be force-fed just weeks after Israel passed a law enabling the controversial procedure. In the southern West Bank city of Hebron dozens of demonstrators also held a peaceful rally for Allan, holding his picture and demanding his immediate release, an AFP reporter said.

RugbyU: Four-try Ireland edge Scotland 28-22 in World Cup warm-up

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - Ireland continued their try-laden World Cup build-up by running four tries past Scotland in a 28-22 win at Lansdowne Road on Saturday.Chris Henry and Blair Cowan scored for either side in a first half lacking excitement or pattern. But the match came alive after the break with both sides taking turns to lead, and ultimately Irelands attacking prowess and stronger bench sealed victory, with Ian Madigan and Simon Zebo impressing.Zebo limped off before the final whistle, while Ireland coach Joe Schmidt will be concerned over the three tries conceded.Scotland boss Vern Cotter will be worried over the fitness of prop Ryan Grant, who was stretchered off with a serious looking ankle injury. With 15 men to be culled from both 46-man squads, both Cotter and Schmidt were eager to allow players to audition with some knowing this would be their one and only opportunity.Schmidt made 14 changes to the team that beat Wales 35-21 in Cardiff last weekend, with Jack Conan earning his debut, while Gordon DArcy became Irelands longest serving international player with a start at 12 alongside Jared Payne.Zebo, who impressed off the bench last week, was given a starting role in the less familiar 15 shirt. It was similar on the opposition side, with Greig Tonks and Ruaridh Jackson at 10 and 15 respectively, swapping their usual roles, and 22-year-old Hugh Blake making his debut. There was little between the sides in a turgid opening 15 minutes, before Henry crossed the line on Irelands first real entry into the Scottish 22.Devin Toner collected from the lineout, and the hosts powered their way through the phases, with Henry picking up from two yards out, and Dave Kilcoyne adding his ballast to push the Ulster backrow over the whitewash.Scotland levelled things just after the half hour, following some good build up play with David Denton heavily involved. The No.8 bundled Mike Ross out of his way, and some snappy handling followed from Jackson and Richie Vernon, whose glorious offload gave Cowan an easy touch down.Peter Horne added the extras to tie things, but the Glasgow Warriors star squandered a kickable penalty moments later to take the lead. The visitors were in the ascendancy as half time arrived, and the break did little to quell their momentum.Henry Pyrgos scored their second try just four minutes after the restart, with strong play by Ryan Grant and Jon Welsh setting up the skipper who dummied inside, then dived low between Ross and Conan.Ireland needed just ten minutes to reply, and when they did so it was painfully easy from a Scottish point of view.Touhy, replaced by Paul OConnell seconds later, gathered the lineout and the Irish pack simply bulldozed through the Scots defence, with Cronin peeling off to stroll home. Both sides began to empty their benches at this point, and Ireland sub Dave Kearney made an instant impact, cutting through the Scots defence with his first touch, and Madigans inside pass found the flying Zebo who finally bagged a try.The tries kept coming. The home crowd were silenced momentarily following a great break by Sean Lamont, who gave Horne an easy run in, and Jacksons conversion put the visitors back in the lead. But they were cheering seconds later when Madigan, in commanding form, delivered a millimetre-perfect cross kick for Fitzgerald to run on to, and put Ireland into an ultimately unassailable lead.Ireland are in Pool D at the World Cup alongside France, Italy, Romania and Canada while Scotland will play in Pool B with South Africa, Samoa, Japan and the United States. The World Cup gets underway on September 18.

Football: Brighton leave it late to snatch pole position

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Brighton left it late to move to the top of the Championship as Tomer Hemeds stoppage-time penalty clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory against Fulham on Saturday.Chris Hughtons side had taken the lead when Sam Baldock swept home Bruno Saltors pass in the 30th minute at Craven Cottage. But former Hull and Blackburn midfielder Tom Cairney drew Fulham level with a superb curling effort just before half-time.It appeared that would be the end of the scoring as the match entered the final moments, but Kazenga LuaLua tricked his way into the box and Shaun Hutchinson lunged in.LuaLua tumbled, the referee pointed to the spot and Hemed sent Marcus Bettinelli the wrong way to score from the spot. The victory follows Brightons 1-0 home triumph against Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the season, while Fulham have taken just one point from their first two fixtures.Kike scored twice as second placed Middlesbrough eased to a 3-0 victory over Bolton at the Riverside Stadium.On-loan Watford midfielder Diego Fabbrinis early opener preceded the Spaniards brace as last years play-off finalists, who began their season with an uninspiring goalless draw at Preston, put in a more stylish performance. It could be the best half weve played in my time in charge, said Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka. It was an amazing first half. We played the way I want to play always.- Bounce back -Derbys new manager Paul Clement is still waiting for his first win after the Rams were held to a 1-1 draw by Charlton at the iPro Stadium.Clements side, who drew at Bolton last weekend, were looking to bounce back from their midweek League Cup exit to fourth tier Portsmouth, but they fell behind to a Tony Watt strike in the 48th minute.Although Derbys Chris Martin equalised in the 68th minute, Clement, who served as Carlo Ancelottis assistant at Real Madrid, Chelsea and Paris Saint German, couldnt secure his maiden victory.I think we will play worse this season and win, Im sure of it, but if we keep playing like that, we are going to be fine, Clement said. The players showed they have got character and personality and I was pleased with them.Rotherhams miserable run against Nottingham Forest continued as the hosts came from behind to claim a 2-1 win at the City Ground.Steve Evans team looked on course to end a run of 16 games without a win over Forest, a woeful sequence that stretched back to 1956, after Danny Collins had put them into the lead with a 13th minute header against his former club. But Matt Mills headed home in first-half stoppage-time and Michail Antonios third goal in two matches helped to complete the recovery for the Reds in the 61st minute, sealing Forests first win of the season.Paul Gallaghers first-half effort saw 10-man Preston claim a 1-0 victory at Milton Keynes Dons despite Jordan Hugills late dismissal. In the days late fixture, Cardiff defender Scott Malone scored a stoppage-time equaliser as the visitors came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at QPR.Elsewhere, Ipswich came from behind to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Portman Road and Brentford defeated Bristol City 4-2 at Ashton Gate.Burnley drew 2-2 with Birmingham and Huddersfield drew 1-1 with Blackburn.

Tattooed severed leg sparks Italy murder mystery

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - The gruesome find of a left leg tattooed with the words Today is a good day to die has sparked an investigation worthy of a detective film, the Italian media reported on Saturday. The limb -- severed above the knee, apparently with an electric saw -- was fished out of a tributary of the River Tiber, which flows through Rome, on Tuesday. The leg had been in the water for less than two days, investigators believe.Police believe the legs owner was murdered and then chopped up. When, where and why the macabre deed took place still remain unknown. The daily Il Messaggero identified the victim as Gabriele di Ponto, 36, who had a long list of convictions for drug-trafficking, armed robbery and violence. He was also a member of far-right ultra supporters of the Rome football club Lazio, whose name was also tattooed on his leg.He had recently married an Italian-Tunisian women, but her father told the newspaper she had left him after a month because he beat her.I have never come across anyone as nasty as him, her father told the daily.Di Ponto carried out his first armed robbery at 18 and served several jail terms after that, even boasting of his time behind bars on his Facebook page.Hello to all prisoners, he wrote. Better to be in a cell, silent, than to be without honour. He had a limp after having survived being once sprayed with bullets, and this slight handicap allowed the police to identify him when he carried out robberies of pharmacies armed with a hatchet, reports said.Di Pontos relatives, worried that there had been no sign of him since late July, went to the morgue and identified his leg from five tattoos, press reports said.DNA tests have been carried out in a bid to confirm the ID.

S.Sudan government to continue peace talks, but not president

Posted:

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) - South Sudans government said Saturday it would continue peace talks to end a 20-month civil war, but without President Salva Kiir attending, his spokesman said.We are still engaging in the peace efforts, that has not stopped, presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny told AFP, a day after government officials had said talks in Ethiopia would be suspended. The government and rebels are under intense international pressure to strike a deal before Mondays deadline or risk possible sanctions.Tens of thousands of people have been killed in a war marked by widespread atrocities on both sides, and diplomats have warned any failure to sign a peace deal could trigger serious consequences for the rival leaders.Mediators had expected Kiir to travel to Addis Ababa before the deadline to meet with rebel chief Riek Machar and sign a possible deal. But Ateny said that instead, Vice-President James Wani Igga would go in his place. It has been decided the president should not be the one travelling, Ateny said, without giving further details.South Sudans civil war began in December 2013 when Kiir accused his former deputy Machar of planning a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings that has split the poverty-stricken, landlocked country along ethnic lines.Regional mediators, backed by US President Barack Obama during his recent visit to Ethiopia, had given Kiir and Machar until August 17 to halt the civil war.On Tuesday, however, top rebel generals said they had split from Machar, accusing him of seeking power for himself, and adding they would not recognise any deal agreed.Well continue with the talks. If we dont sign it, well continue to talk until we agree, information minister Michael Makuei said in Addis Ababa Saturday. The latest round of talks opened on August 6, mediated by the regional eight-nation bloc IGAD, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, as well as the United Nations, African Union, China and the troika of Britain, Norway and the United States.Makuei said that there were still details of the agreement that had not been discussed. Some of the provisions of the compromise agreement drafted by IGAD have never been discussed by the parties before, Makuei said. The draft agreement in its current form doesnt meet the aspirations of the people of South Sudan.Ateny said mediators should take into the consideration the split between the rebels to allow the government to determine who was in control in rebel zones.Since the reason for peace is to silence the guns, then we need all those with the guns to take part, Ateny added. It is not about the political deals, but about engaging the field commanders on the ground. The war has been characterised by ethnic massacres and rape. Recent attacks have included castration, burning people alive and tying children together before slitting their throats.
