Tennis: Sharapova comeback cut short by new injury

Posted:

WUHAN (AFP) - Maria Sharapovas comeback from a leg injury lasted less than three sets on Monday before she retired with a left forearm problem against unseeded Barbora Strycova at the Wuhan Open. The world number three had been out with a persistent leg injury since July, when she lost a Wimbledon semi-final to Serena Williams, and pulled out of three events including the US Open. But the Russians long-awaited return proved short-lived as she was pushed to two tie-breaks by the Czech Republics Strycova before withdrawing when 2-1 up in the third.I got pain in my left forearm. It just got worse and worse as I continued, Sharapova said after the match.I dont remember the last time I redrew in the middle of a match. Its not a nice feeling, she added.Unfortunately its sad that Maria couldnt finish the match because I thought it was a really good match, Strycova said of her opponent. Its never easy (against Sharapova) because shes playing very long and very powerful. So you have to watch out not to make so many mistakes.Sharapovas retirement leaves a question mark over the rest of her season with only one big tournament, the China Open, left before the year-ending WTA Finals in Singapore. She had pulled out of a WTA event in Toronto and the Cincinnati Masters hoping to be ready for the US Open, but was also forced to withdraw from the years final Grand Slam tournament.Obviously Singapore and Fed Cup is a big priority for myself. Ill do everything in order to be healthy for that. I dont know how long it will take for this to recover so I cant really give myself or you a definite answer about next week, Sharapova said. The other upset of the day saw the late withdrawal of Canadian Eugenie Bouchard linked to ongoing symptoms from the concussion suffered at the US Open earlier this month.Bouchards pullout left Swiss youngster Belinda Bencic -- who this year earned a reputation as a giant-killer after knocking out top ranked players including Serena Williams -- to play lucky loser Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia. A visibly tired Bencic had to fight hard for a two set win over Tomljanovic, just a day after the 18-year-old lost the final of the WTA Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo to Agnieszka Radwanska. Bencic will be hoping for a strong performance at Wuhan, which could see her end the year in the top 10 cementing her rapid rise up the rankings over the last two years.Radwanska did not fare so well against Venus Williams, losing in two sets to the former world number one, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4).Eighth seed Karolina Pliskova downed Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in a closely fought three sets in the second round, while this years shock finalist at the US Open Roberta Vinci of Italy took three sets to knock out qualifier Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.Seventh seed Serbian Ana Ivanovic downed Alexandra Dulgheru of Russia in two sets, breaking Dulgherus serve in the final game to end 6-1, 6-3, and will meet in the second round unseeded Madison Brengle of the US who beat Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets.

Tennis: Bouchard pulls out of WTA Wuhan Open

Posted:

WUHAN (AFP) - Canadas Eugenie Bouchard withdrew from the WTA Wuhan Open Monday just hours before her first-round match, citing symptoms linked to the concussion suffered at the US Open earlier this month. The 21 year-old has not played since she pulled out of the US Open on September 7 with a head injury caused by a locker-room fall which saw her forfeit her fourth-round match against eventual finalist Roberta Vinci of Italy.I travelled to Wuhan with the intention of playing. Unfortunately, my concussion symptoms came back during practice on Saturday and it would not be safe for me to go on court today, Bouchard said in a statement.Bouchard was due to meet 18-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the first round. Bencic now faces lucky loser Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia.Bouchard slipped and fell in the locker room after a gruelling fifth day of the US Open that saw her defeat Slovakias Dominika Cibulkova in three sets before going onto win a mixed doubles match with partner Nick Kyrgios of Australia. It was not clear if Bouchard intends to compete in next weeks China Open in Beijing.I will rest in Wuhan for the next few days to determine how I progress, and look forward to coming back here to play in this great city next year, Bouchard said.Bouchard lost the final at the inaugural Wuhan Open last year to Petra Kvitova. The tournament is hosted in the home city of Li Na, the countrys only Grand Slam winner.

BERLIN (AFP) - Germanys Sabine Lisicki confirmed on Monday she expects to miss the rest of the 2015 season as she continues to struggle with a knee injury. We have tried everything, but my knee isnt ready, the 2013 Wimbledon finalist wrote on her Facebook page. The current state of play is that I wont play any more tournaments this season.Lisicki had complained of pain in her knee during the early rounds of the US Open earlier this month before her last-16 exit to Romanias Simona Halep. She has been treated by famous Munich-based doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt, who looks after the German football team and athletics stars, including Usain Bolt. The doctors, my team and I have all worked hard to get me back fit as soon as possible and I will be back by the start of the new season at the latest, she added. It has been a disappointing season for the German who reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells in March and also made the last four at the Birmingham tournament in June. She went out of the Australian Open in the first round and reached the third round of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, which has left her 28th in the world rankings from a high of 12th in May 2012.

Golf: Spieth crowned PGA Player of the Year

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Jordan Spieth capped his trophy-laden season with more silverware on Monday, winning the PGA of America Player of the Year award as well as the prestigious Vardon Trophy.Spieth, 22, became the second youngest player to win the awards in the same year after Tiger Woods achieved the feat as a 21-year-old in 1997.The accolades came after Spieth held his nerve to win Sundays Tour Championship, completing a remarkable season which also included wins in the Masters and US Open. The season-ending awards announced Monday are given for excellence by a PGA Tour professional. On Sunday Spieth took his earnings for 2015 to just over $22 million after carding a one-under-par 69 to claim the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, clinching the $10 million bonus on offer to the winner of the FedEx Cup.The win also restored Spieths world number one rankings ahead of Australias Jason Day.The Vardon Trophy is given to the PGA Tour professional who posts the lowest scoring average each year.Spieth averaged 68.911 through 91 complete rounds this season, just pipping PGA champion Day (69.161), who completed 75 rounds, by 0.25 strokes.Spieth tallied 180 Player of the Year points, ahead of Day with 106 , Bubba Watson with 52, Zach Johnson (46) and Rickie Fowler (44).The points totals are calculated on a system factoring tournament wins, official money standings and scoring averages.

Football: Lukaku inspires Everton late show

Posted:

WEST BROMWICH (AFP) - Romelu Lukakus double strike inspired a remarkable fightback as Everton recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Monday.Roberto Martinezs side looked destined for a defeat when Craig Dawson added to Saido Berahinos first half opener to put Albion 2-0 up with 54 minutes gone at the Hawthorns. But Belgium forward Lukaku gave Everton a crucial lifeline when he netted one minute late and Ivory Coast striker Aruna Kone equalised in the closing stages before Lukaku bagged the winner with only six minutes left.Lukakus first Premier League goals for six weeks came against the club he played for on loan in the 2012-13 campaign and lifted Everton to fifth in the table following their third league win of the season. We were very disappointed with the first half. We were off, every single individual, Martinez said. The mountain we had to climb, it would have been easy to lose focus but we got three goals against the best defensive structure in the Premier League.Every three points is huge but it feels extra good.It was the perfect preparation for Evertons Merseyside derby date with Liverpool on Sunday, while Albions third league defeat of the season left Tony Puliss team languishing in 15th place. The first goal kills us. We should deal with it, Pulis said. The other two goals are poor goals, the second one looks offside. We switched off and Everton will punish you. There was little hint of the eventual drama, which left Albion winless at home in the league this season, during a wretched first half which was only lit up by Berahinos opener.Without injured England defender John Stones, Ramiro Funes Mori stepped in for his full league debut but the Everton centre-back was at fault for Albions first goal.Mori had enjoyed a untroubled half but imploded when he lost the ball near the halfway line after trying to run out of defence. It found James Morrison and his excellent through-ball for Berahino saw the striker slip in a low shot via Tim Howards legs.Darren Fletcher had a header turned wide by Howard as Albion pressed after the interval and they doubled their lead from the resulting corner.Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley got in a mess trying to pick up Dawson and Jonny Evans, which allowed Dawson to nod in Chris Brunts deep delivery.Everton hit back immediately when Lukaku headed Deulofeus cross past Boaz Myhill and Kone levelled in the 75th minute, just three minutes after coming off the bench.Lukaku did brilliantly on the edge of the box to spot Kones run and threaded the ball through to the former Wigan forward, who was just onside, to drill past Myhill. The Baggies were shell-shocked, but former Chelsea striker Lukaku was not finished as he wrapped up Evertons comeback with six minutes left. There was a hint of handball when he met Gerard Deulofeus cross, but with Myhill slow to react Lukaku smashed in from close range to spark wild celebrations among the travelling Everton fans.

Thought-controlled computer cursor takes a leap forward

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Scientists working to perfect a thought-controlled computer cursor said Monday they have achieved their best results yet, and are moving closer to creating a version that paralysis victims can use.The device works twice as fast as in previous trials after American developers found better ways to read brain activity and fine-tuned its hardware and software, according to results published in the journal Nature Medicine. Improving the speed and accuracy of mind-controlled prostheses is crucial to taking them from mere lab experiments to helping quadriplegics regain some level of independence. The current work is a step towards one of our ultimate goals, which is to provide point-and-click control of any computer system whenever the user desires, study co-author Jaimie Henderson, of Stanford University, told AFP by email. The results were from the BrainGate clinical trial, which made history in 2011 when a woman named Cathy Hutchinson used only her thoughts to operate a robotic arm to bring a flask of coffee to her lips for a sip.In this latest study, researchers observed how well and how fast two paralysed people -- a man and woman in their 50s, both with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrigs disease -- could use their minds to guide an arrow-shaped cursor onto a target on a computer screen. The team compared the pairs performance with previous attempts, including how well Hutchinson performed in the same cursor tests for a 2011 study. The duo were able to move the cursor from one point on the screen to another twice as fast, said Henderson. The test subjects control the prosthesis via an array of electrodes implanted onto their motor cortices -- the part of the brain that controls body movement. The 96 tiny electrodes pick up the signals from nearby neurons and send them to a computer that translates them into action.Researchers said they have made a range of improvements, including filtering out electrical interference that can weaken signals from the brain. The team asked the participants to try different ways of thinking about moving the cursor in order to find which worked best. The study is a collaboration between Brown University, Massachusetts General Hospital and the US Department of Veterans Affairs as well as Stanford University and Case Western Reserve University.Researchers said much more research is needed before widespread use will be possible.

300 million elderly not receiving long-term care: ILO

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - More than half the worlds elderly lack access to long-term care, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said in a report Monday, condemning the deplorable situation facing a rapidly ageing population.A new report from the UN agency showed that some 300 million people over the age of 65 cannot easily access long-term care when needed.Despite the ballooning need of the elderly for long-term care, Mondays report showed most countries were ignoring or under-prioritising their needs. This deplorable situation is reflected in the very low public LTC (long term care) expenditure, which amounts to less than 1.0 percent of GDP on average globally, study author Xenia Scheil-Adlung said in a statement. The ILO report charged that discrimination and negative attitudes towards older persons were a big part of the problem.Ageism is a global phenomenon that is sometimes even laid down in regulations and legislation, for example higher costs or unfavourable conditions of certain insurance policies for older persons, or being refused for specific medical services due to age, it said.Only 5.6 percent of the worlds population lives in countries, including Germany and Japan, that provide universal long-term care.A full 48 percent of the global population meanwhile is not protected by national legislation on long-term care, while another 46.3 percent are largely excluded from coverage due to narrow regulations that limit benefits to the poorest. In Africa, more than 90 percent of the elderly have no access to long-term care when they need it.But even the most generous countries, found in Europe, spend only two percent or less of their GDP on long-term care, the ILO report said. This forces many older people living in even some of the worlds richest countries to pay for up to 100 percent of their care from their own pockets.Persons in need should not face financial hardship and an increased risk of poverty due to the financial consequences of accessing care, the report said. The study showed that the world would need 13.6 million more care workers to cover the needs of the elderly. The current shortfall is largely made up for by unpaid female family members, who often are forced to reduce the time they spend at a paying job to care for elderly relatives, putting the entire family at risk of sliding into poverty, the report said. The ILO study dismissed as ageism fears that care for the elderly is becoming unaffordable as populations grow older.Instead of fretting over the cost of caring for the elderly, countries should realise it is in their own interest to expand long-term care, the report said, pointing especially to the job creation potential in the field.

Oil prices drop after China industrial profits sink

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices dropped on Monday in the wake of a sharp fall in industrial profits in China, the latest sign of weakness in the worlds largest energy consumer.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in November slid $1.27 to $44.43 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent North Sea crude for November delivery dropped to $47.34 a barrel in London, down $1.26 from Fridays settlement. The market is very volatile but it hasnt been just crude oil, its across the board. Minerals are taking it on the chin as well as the stock market, which is putting a lot of pressure on commodities, said Oliver Sloup of iiTrader.com.Sloup said the latest weak data from China amid faltering growth was a driver of the sell-off. Profits at Chinas major industrial companies fell almost nine percent in August from a year ago, the biggest decline since 2011, official data showed Monday.China is one of the biggest consumers of crude oil and if theyre slowing down theres not going to be anyone really stepping up to fill those shoes in the near future, he said. If they continue to slow, expect that to continue to put pressure on prices. The oil market also reflected worries more generally about global growth, analysts said. Christine Lagarde, the chief of the International Monetary Fund, said the IMF would likely lower its growth forecasts for 2015 and 2016 because of the slowdown in China and other emerging markets. In an interview with French business newspaper Les Echos published Monday, Lagarde said the July estimates of 3.3 percent growth for 2015 and 3.8 percent for 2016 was no longer realistic. But she said growth would remain above 3.0 percent.Lagarde basically said she was going to lower the growth for the entire universe and thats kind of weighing on the expectation for crude-oil demand, said Phil Flynn at Price Futures Group. The IMF will release its new growth projections on October 6.

Dollar slips amid global growth jitters

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar slipped against the euro and yen Monday as Chinese corporate profits data raised more uncertainty about the pace of global growth.Government data showed profits at major Chinese industrial companies fell 8.8 percent in August from a year ago. The steepest profits drop since 2011 added to concerns about the economic slowdown under way in China and sent share markets tumbling. The sharp sell-off in stocks, decline in Treasury yields and mixed US economic reports contributed to the weakness in the greenback but none of these reasons, including data, is damaging enough to halt the uptrend in the greenback, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. The euro fetched $1.1242 Monday, up from $1.1202 Friday, while the dollar fell to 119.93 yen from 120.49 yen. New York Fed chief William Dudley, a voting member of the Federal Reserves policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee, said a long-awaited rate hike was still on track for 2015, echoing comments by Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Thursday that had pushed up the dollar. The rate move could come at the two remaining FOMC meetings this year, in late October or mid-December, Dudley said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Monday.A higher interest rate typically would boost the greenback. The dollar trading lower against the euro and yen Monday would be testing the patience of anyone who bought dollars after Yellens speech last week, Lien added.

Issues remain at hand as Sharif, Modi wave at each other during UN meeting

Posted:

Lahore (Web Desk) – As both nations look forward to any signs which might hint towards the coming relations between Pakistan and India, Pakistan’s Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and Indian PM Narendra Modi waved at each other on Tuesday before their address at the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping session. Both leaders are in New York to attend the 70th UN General Assembly session. The incident occurred at the UN peacekeeping summit hosted by US President Barack Obama. Modis entrance into the hall was followed by Sharif’s. The Pakistani PM waved at the Indian PM who smiled and waved back. After a pause, Modi then waved again to which Sharif responded with a wave and a smile. It was another rare instance as the leaders of both countries opted for a stay in the same hotel, the prestigious Waldorf Astoria in New York, during their visit.Relations between the two countries, however, remain strained due to a number of recent issues. As of before, Kashmir remains a bone of contention between India and Pakistan, as scheduled National Security Advisor (NSA) level talks between the two men broke down recently in August as Modi’s government decried Pakistani leaders meeting with the Kashimiri leaders of the Hurriyat Conference.Pakistan on the other hand fumed over the recent skirmishes at the border. PM Sharif’s government also promised to raise the issue of Indian occupation of Kashmir on an international level during the UN session. PM Nawaz Sharif has also urged UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to resolve the Kashmir issue while India has called Kashmir as a bilateral issue and opposed any international involvement.Pakistan’s Ambassador in the US, Maliha Lodhi stated that during his visit, the PM will also address the issue of a wall built at the Line of Control (LOC) by the Indians which is against the international law.Tensions have remained high with recent frequent episodes of unprovoked firing by the Indian Border Forces which led to the deaths of a number of Pakistanis. Pakistan answered back with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Shareef warning the Indian government that Pakistan was more than capable of responding with a befitting reply.Modi and Sharif last met in Ufa, Russia in July during BRICS and SCO summit.

Polish army inspects alleged site of Nazi gold train

Posted:

WARSAW (AFP) - Polands army said Monday it has begun inspecting the southwestern area where two men claim to have discovered an armoured Nazi gold train buried at the end of World War II.The treasure hunters -- a German and a Pole -- left the world spellbound last month with their alleged find near the city of Walbrzych of a railway car potentially full of jewels and gold stolen by the Nazis. Our goal is to check whether theres any hazardous material at the site, said Colonel Artur Talik, who is leading the search using mine detectors and ground-penetrating radar. The governor of the region of Lower Silesia, Tomasz Smolarz, added that other decisions regarding the search for the train would be made once safety is assured at the site.Piotr Koper, a Pole, and German national Andreas Richter announced last month they had discovered a 98-metre-long (320-foot-long) train carriage buried eight to nine metres underground. They believe the contents are mostly weapon prototypes, though according to local legend they could also include artwork and Nazi documents.Deputy Culture Minister Piotr Zuchowski said last month he was more than 99 percent sure the train exists because of ground-penetrating radar images he had seen. But officials have since cast doubt on its existence, saying there was no credible evidence of it. They have not however given up on verifying the claim.Rumours of two Nazi trains that disappeared in the spring of 1945 have been circulating for years, capturing the imagination of countless treasure-hunters.The lore is fuelled by a massive network of secret underground tunnels near Walbrzych -- including around the massive Ksiaz Castle -- that Nazi Germany built and where legend has it the Third Reich stashed looted valuables.
