Tennis: Serena sent packing by Kuznetsova in Miami shocker

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - World number one and three-time defending champion Serena Williams crashed out of the Miami Open on Monday, falling to Russias Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (3/7), 6-1, 6-2.Williams fired 13 aces and 43 winners but also made 55 unforced errors, prompting questions about her fitness and movement that irked the 21-time Grand Slam champion.I dont think its appropriate to criticize my movement right now, Williams said. I did the best I could. I cant win every match. These players come out and give their best. I have to give 300 percent every match. The 34-year-old American was seeking her ninth Miami crown but instead matched her earliest-ever exit from 2000 with a fourth-round departure at the ATP and WTA hardcourt event. Its obviously disappointing, but I have won here a lot, so its OK, Williams said. Also ousted was world number two Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, upset by 20th-ranked Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.Williams, who said she was physically fine and not affected by the heat and humidity, arrived having lost back-to-back finals for the first time since 2004, falling to Germanys Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open and Belarus Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells.Adding the upset only increases the intensity as she prepares to defend French Open and Wimbledon crowns in the next few months. There are expectations, she said. There are also the expectations I put on myself. Thats pretty hard to live up to, the expectations I put on myself. For 30-year-old Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion who lost eight of 10 prior matches to Williams, it was turning back time to when she won the 2006 Miami title.Im really happy with my performance, Kuznetsova said. I had to stay within my game and put a lot of balls back into the court and I did that really well today.Kuznetsova, seeded 15th, next faces the winner of a later match between Ukraines 12th-seeded Elina Svitolina and Russian 30th seed Ekaterina Makarova. After an exchange of early first-set breaks led to a tie-breaker, Williams jumped ahead 4-1, aided by two aces and a service winner, and took the last three points on an overhead smash, a service winner and a forehand winner.Kuznetsova held at love to open the second set and forced Williams to save three break points in the second game, finally breaking for a 3-1 edge when Williams netted a backhand.Kuznetsova saved two break points in the fifth game, Williams double faulted away a break in the sixth and Kuznetsova held at love in the seventh to force a third set.Williams was humbled in the third from the start, being broken at love in the first game and by a backhand service return winner in the third on the way to losing in two hours and three minutes.Radwanska, the 2012 Miami champion and Wimbledon runner-up who lost to Williams in the Australian Open semi-finals, faded in the second set as well to Bacsinszky, a 2015 French Open semi-finalist.In the first set I was kind of nervous, Bacsinszky said. I told myself it might be a long day and I had to put a few balls in and keep working at it.Bacsinszkys quarter-final foe will be Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep, the 2014 French Open runner-up who eliminated 69th-ranked British wildcard Heather Watson 6-3, 6-4.Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori cruised into the fourth round by routing Ukraines 27th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2.I played a very solid match, Nishikori said. Its not easy when youre in the top 10 and everybody is playing their best against you. I have to really stay focused and play my tennis all the time. I think Im doing well.Nishikori plays for a quarter-final berth against Spanish 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

Tennis: Andy Murray crashes out to Dimitrov at Miami

MIAMI (AFP) - World number two Andy Murray of Britain was upset in the third round of the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Monday, falling to Bulgarian 26th seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 6-3.Murray was seeking a third Miami crown and his fourth final in five years but lost to a foe he had beaten in six of eight prior meetings. The 28-year-old Scotsman lost a 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 6-3 shocker to 28th-ranked Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov on Monday at the Miami Open after having been sent packing at Indian Wells by Argentinas 48th-ranked Frederico Delbonis.I was up a break in the third, same thing in Indian Wells as well, Murray said. Then lost a run of games in both matches. So need to look at that and see where I go from there.Murray, who fell to 0-5 in Australian Open finals with a loss to Novak Djokovic in January, became a father February 7 when his wife Kim gave birth to daughter Sophia and took a break until Indian Wells.I didnt know what to expect, Murray said. I expected Indian Wells to be tricky. But here I had a long time to prepare, practiced pretty well.Indian Wells, understandable. Here, not so much.Murray said becoming a father has given him a more relaxed perspective on tennis, but has not changed the amount of work he does.Win or lose, its not irrelevent to me but its not as important as it was before, he said. Its not as stressful.Four of the top five mens seeds and six of the top 10 at Miami are gone before the last 16, matching 2005s tournament record. It hasnt happened often, Murray said of such seeded attrition. Im not sure exactly why that is.But Murray is not ready to proclaim this the year for a change of the guard dumping himself, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.I hope its not for my sake, Murray said. I need a little more evidence than one or two weeks to support that. But he does have respect for rising young talent and their potential for Grand Slam success. The group of guys coming up behind are really, really good players, Murray said. It depends a little bit on how they develop, too. A lot of them are huge guys, big guys with big games and move well.Murray, the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon champion, made the French Open semi-finals the past two years and is expected to be in the hunt again this year at Roland Garros. But Murray knows he cannot make 55 unforced errors as he did against Dimitrov.Grigor is a very good player but I had opportunities, Murray said. Its not like I came out and played awful stuff the whole time. When you get your chances you have to put your foot down.

Tennis: Nishikori rolls into fourth round at Miami

MIAMI (AFP) - Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori cruised into the fourth round at the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Monday by routing Ukraines 27th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2.The 26-year-old Asian number one needed only 72 minutes to advance into a matchup for a quarter-final berth against the winner of a later match between French ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Spanish 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, already a champion at Auckland and Sofia this year.I played a very solid match, Nishikori said. Its not easy when youre in the top 10 and everybody is playing their best against you. I have to really stay focused and play my tennis all the time. I think Im doing well.Dolgopolov broke Nishikori to open the match but the second of his five double faults in the set cost him a break in the next game. He was broken again in the fourth and eighth games, sending a forehand long with his 19th unforced error to hand Nishikori the last break and the set.Nishikori broke for a 3-1 lead in the second set and again to close out the match when Dolgopolov netted a backhand on the last point, his 30th unforced error of the match.Nishikori, who won his fourth consecutive Memphis title last month for his 11th career ATP crown, could face British second seed Andy Murray in the quarter-finals.Murray, trying to capture his third Miami trophy and reach the final for the fourth time in five seasons, plays Bulgarian 26th seed Grigor Dimitrov in a later match. On the womens side, Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep, the 2014 French Open runner-up, reached the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 69th-ranked British wildcard Heather Watson.Halep, a first-round loser to Chinas Zhang Shuai at the Australian Open, next faces either Polish world number two Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2012 Miami champion who took her 18th WTA title earlier this year at Shenzhen, or 20th-ranked Swiss Timea Bacsinszky.World number one Serena Williams, the three-time defending champion seeking her ninth career Miami title, faces Russian 15th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam winner, in a later fourth-round match.Williams, a 21-time Grand Slam champion, has lost back-to-back finals for the first time since 2004, falling to Germanys Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open and Belarus Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells.Second seed Kerber or 13th seed Azarenka could meet Williams again in the Miami final, but Azarenka meets Spanish fourth seed Garbine Muguruza and Kerber faces Hungarys 49th-ranked Timea Babos in later matches to decide quarter-final berths.

Football: Messi given impromptu standing ovation in Argentina theatre

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Lionel Messi unsurprisingly is recognised no matter where he goes, so an attempt to make an incognito trip to the theatre on Saturday was always going to be in vain. The Argentinian five-time Ballon dOr winner tried to quietly take in a play in his home country with family members, but was forced to go on stage and receive a standing ovation after one of the actors spotted him in the crowd. The 500 people in attendance shouted Ole, ole, Leo, Leo, while he was hugged by all the actors. The 28-year-old will be hoping to help his national side move into one of the four South American automatic qualification places for the 2018 World Cup when Argentina take on Bolivia on Tuesday.

Lahore blast: US stands with people and govt of Pakistan

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) – The State Department spokesman John Kirby while briefing the newsmen in Washington on Monday said that US condemn in the strongest terms the appalling terrorist attack in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore that killed dozens and left scores injured. He said that the United States stands with the people and government of Pakistan at this very difficult hour and we send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed, and of course, to all those injured we are praying for a speedy recovery. The spokesman further said that attacks like these only deepen our shared resolve to defeat terrorism around the world, and we’re going to continue to work with our partners in Pakistan and across the region to combat the threat of terrorism.Answering a question, John Kirby said that there is no doubt that Pakistan continues to be under threat from terrorists and added that innocent Pakistanis are suffering at the hands of terrorists. He said that nothing’s changed about our commitment to do what we can to help them deal with this threat and added that it’s not just a Pakistani threat. It’s a regional threat; it’s a global threat in many ways. So we stand by the people of Pakistan right now and we also stand by our commitment to assist Pakistan going forward.

Oil edges lower as oversupply weighs

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices drifted lower Monday, extending last weeks decline amid a global oversupply, with trading activity severely limited by market holidays in Europe.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in May fell seven cents to $39.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea for May delivery, the European benchmark, fell 17 cents to $40.27 a barrel. The steam has gone out from the bull market for now, said Mike Lynch of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. Unless we get some more serious bullish -- either inventories information, news out of OPEC or economic -- news, so far were still waiting.Oil prices last week posted their first weekly decline in a month and a half. Much of the downturn reflected pressure from a US government report that said US commercial crude inventories had jumped a huge 9.4 million barrels in the prior week, adding to worries about the long-running global glut. Before that, oil had rebounded since February on speculation that major producers could agree to freeze output or take some action to curb falling prices. Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and key non-members led by Russia are due to discuss a proposed output freeze at a meeting in Doha on April 17. The petroleum markets have been unable to hold minor overnight gains as traders are beginning to focus more on rising inventories than on hopes that a meeting between most OPEC producers with Russia and some other non-OPEC producers will transform a surplus into a deficit, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Evans said that based on the producers stated agenda for freezing output at January levels, a bullish outcome for the market was not anticipated. We see potential for prices to begin weakening even ahead of the meeting as this probability begins to sink in, he said.Bernard Aw at IG Markets noted that market business was modest due to the long Easter break across most world markets.Everything hinges on the meeting between OPEC and non-OPEC producers, Aw said. If it takes place and they come to some agreement of a production freeze, we could see some gains well beyond $40.

Dollar mixed ahead of Yellen speech

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar traded mixed Monday as investors awaited Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellens speech on monetary policy, hoping to glean insight into the path of interest rate increases.Investors were expected to focus on Yellens remarks Tuesday to the Economic Club of New York to see if she sheds light on when the central bank will raise rates for a second time. With the economy exhibiting patches of weakness, analysts are penciling in about two increases this year, after the Fed lifted rates in December for the first time in nine years.US Commerce Department data showed lackluster consumer spending in February and the Feds preferred inflation measure rose 1.0 percent year-over-year, down from 1.2 percent in January. Stripping out volatile food and energy prices, core inflation was up 1.7 percent from a year ago, near the Feds 2.0 percent target.A core rate of 1.7 percent will leave many hawks at the Fed concerned they are falling behind an upward inflationary trend, said Jay Morelock of FTN Financial. The dollar slipped against the euro, trading at $1.1196 per euro around 2100 GMT, down from $1.1166 at the same time Friday. The greenback rose to 113.45 yen from 113.14 yen on Friday. The Federal Open Market Committee, the Feds policy arm, holds its next meeting on April 26-27, though some analysts say the FOMC would be more likely to raise rates at the June 14-15 meeting.Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management said that Fridays March labor market report could lift the dollar if earnings rebound after last months surprise decline. However if Yellen remains dovish and the payrolls report is weak then investors will punish the dollar and rule out any chance of June tightening, Lien said.

Stokes revels in role as England death bowler

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Ice-cool all-rounder Ben Stokes said Monday he was revelling in his role as Englands death bowler after his nerves of steel once again kept his side in the World Twenty20.With Sri Lanka needing 15 runs to win and their captain Angelo Mathews hitting Englands bowlers around the park in Saturdays crunch match in New Delhi, Stokes was handed the ball at the start of the 20th over. But after spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were clattered for 21 in their final overs, Stokes bowled a string of near perfect yorkers and conceded only four runs to secure Englands place in the semi-finals.Stokes also held his nerve in Englands previous match against Afghanistan, taking the final over as the minnows fell 16 runs short of their target. While other England bowlers have come unstuck on the global stage -- including Stuart Broad who was hit for six sixes by Indias Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 World T20 -- the 24-year-old Stokes is relishing the responsibility.I would much rather be doing that last over thing rather than hoping that whoever is bowling it gets us through. Id rather be the man doing it, he said in the build-up to Wednesdays semi-final against New Zealand.Yes, I love being involved in the game and being in high pressure situations. I think it probably brings the best out of me in terms of my cricket. I enjoy getting into the big moments of the game.Englands passage to the semis was hampered by defeat to the West Indies in their opening match, meaning they had to win all of their other three games against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and South Africa. The West Indies also beat England in 2010 but Paul Collingwoods side went on to win the tournament in the Caribbean, the first time that the team had ever won a major international tournament.Collingwood, who has captained Stokes back home in Durham, is currently in India as a consultant for the England team.Colly actually did say that at the start of the tournament that we got beaten by the West Indies in the first game. Its a good omen because thats what happened to him, Stokes told reporters in New Delhi.Under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, a young England side is developing a reputation for aggressive strokeplay which has surprised many observers.Stokes is one of the more seasoned members of the team after making his international debut in 2011.He said that as one of the least experienced teams out here, England have an opportunity to prove a lot of people wrong.Stokes was born in Christchurch on New Zealands South Island and his father was a New Zealand rugby league international. But while admitting that he might have dreamed of playing for New Zealand as a youngster, he rejected any notion of split loyalties. Ever since I made a choice of having a career of a professional cricketer, ever since getting picked for the England under-15s, Ive just wanted to play for England.Stokes insisted England would not underestimate the unheralded Black Caps, but pointed out that they did beat them in a World T20 warm-up.Theyre obviously the in-form team, they havent lost a game yet. We played them in a warm-up game and beat them and we still take confidence from that and we obviously beat them in the English summer when we had the series against them, said Stokes. So we just know that if we play to our capability like we did against Sri Lanka, no matter who we face, we can give any team a good run. While it will be the fifth different venue for New Zealand in the tournament, England should have an advantage by playing their third match in a row in Delhi, with Stokes saying that its a home game even if we are in India.
