Pakistan to face England in third ODI today

Posted:

LONDON (Dunya News) - The third one-day international of the five-match series between Pakistan and England will be played today (Tuesday) at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The match will start at 6:00pm (PST).Following an impressive show in the recently concluded four-match Test series against England, the visitors Pakistan lag behind 0-2 in the One-Day International (ODI) series, as they get set to take on the in-form hosts in the third match of the series.Pakistan have failed to come up with the same fighting spirit in the ODIs as they did in the Tests, while England have bounced back well enough, maintaining their tough composure in the limited-overs format, as they aim to seal the series with a win on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim insists his side are determined to show their one-day international credentials after a pair of lacklustre efforts against England.Imad and his team-mates are ninth in the International Cricket Council one-day rankings after defeats in Southampton and at Lord’s left them 2-0 down with three to play against England. Nevertheless Imad says Azhar Ali’s team have it in them to battle back in the third match at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.“With the talent we’ve got, I don’t think it’s a number nine team,” he said. “We have to show that in big matches like tomorrow. I believe we can come back. We have to work hard, trust ourselves and show our skills in front of the cameras.”

Oil falls on bullish Fed talk and rising dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell on Monday as the dollar rose following relatively bullish talk from the US Federal Reserve. In an address on Friday, US Fed Chair Janet Yellen said there was growing justification for a near-term interest rate hike. Hopes of an agreement to curtail production when producing countries meet in Algeria next month meanwhile seemed have to faded. In New York, a barrel of West Texas Intermediate for October delivery fell 66 cents to close at $46.98.North Sea Brent also fell 66 cents to settle at $49.26 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange in London.Prices had rallied earlier in August on hopes that the Russia and Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries could agree next to limit production in a bid to balance supply and demand and stabilize pricesRussia, which is not an OPEC member, is due to join next months informal meeting in Algeria at which participants are expected to discuss production.Market talk seems to have shifted to stances that could spoil an agreement to cap output, with some focusing on Iraqs recent request for oil companies to boost production, Timothy Evans of Citigroup said in a client note. Investors are also aware that Iran hopes to raise output to 4 million barrels per day by the end of next month, he added.

Dollar rises following uptick in US consumer spending

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar rose against the euro, the yen and the pound on Monday as US Commerce Department data showed consumer spending had risen in July. The rise in the dollar also followed a comparatively bullish outlook from US Fed chief Janet Yellen, who said Friday that justification for an interest rate hike was mounting. Toward 2100 GMT, the euro was at $1.1187, down from $1.1195 Friday, while the dollar stood at 101.88 yen, up from 101.77.The pound fell to $1.3105 from $1.3135 on Monday, a British bank holiday. The Commerce Department reported Monday that US consumer spending in July had risen 0.3 percent over June while core inflation had risen only 0.1 percent. Personal incomes were up 0.4 percent for the month.Yellens remarks on Friday at the annual Jackson Hole symposium on monetary policy were seen as raising the likelihood of interest rate action this year, which can increase demand for US currency.Markets have repriced rate expectations accordingly, with the implied probability of a rate increase by the end of this year now firmly above 50 percent, Erik Nelson of Wells Fargo wrote in a client note. The major currencies are broadly weaker in what is an otherwise light day for economic data and events.

Imad backs Pakistan to show one-day class

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim insists his side are determined to show their one-day international credentials after a pair of lacklustre efforts against England.Imad and his team-mates are ninth in the International Cricket Council one-day rankings after defeats in Southampton and at Lords left them 2-0 down with three to play against England.Nevertheless Imad says Azhar Alis team have it in them to battle back in the third match at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. With the talent weve got, I dont think its a number nine team, he said.We have to show that in big matches like tomorrow. I believe we can come back.We have to work hard, trust ourselves and show our skills in front of the cameras.Imad concedes England will be even more formidable with Ben Stokes able to bowl again, after figuring as a specialist batsman only in the first two matches, but he is convinced Pakistan will still measure up.Hes a great cricketer, a genuine all-rounder and one of the best (in the world), Imad said on Monday. When Ben Stokes is fit to bowl, England are definitely even stronger. But if we get ourselves right, were going to give them a tough time.Former World Cup winners Pakistan have slumped below all other Test-playing nations in the ICCs ODI table and Imad knows it is time to make amends for that embarrassment. Its the first time weve ever been number nine in the world, Imad said. But if we stay united - which we are - were going to show the cricketing world what were capable of, just like we did in the Test matches. Were number one in them, and were really looking forward to putting our rankings up in the one-dayers.Imads career-best 63 not out helped Pakistan recover from two for three at Lords, where they were then unable to defend 251 all out.The Swansea-born all-rounder is looking forward already to a weekend return to his native country, for the final match of the series in Cardiff. He knows much hard work will be needed for a happy homecoming, and believes Pakistan must simply cast aside their struggles to date. Its just cricket, and it can happen to any team, he said. Were ready, up for it. Whatever is gone is gone - its done.We have to get some runs on the board, and give our bowlers a chance.

South Africa hold aces despite collapse

CENTURION (AFP) - South Africa held on to a strong position despite a top-order batting collapse in their second innings on the third day of the second Test against New Zealand on Monday.South Africa were 105 for six at the close, an overall lead of 372 runs on a pitch at Centurions SuperSport Park offering assistance to bowlers, with swing, seam and uneven bounce.South African fast bowler Dale Steyn said his team would continue batting on Tuesday. The longer we bat, the longer the sun will bake on this wicket and the cracks will open wider. When you hit the deck theres always something happening here, he said.New Zealand hit back after conceding a first innings lead of 267, with Tim Southee and Trent Boult taking two wickets each to reduce South Africa to 47 for four. Doug Bracewell and Neil Wagner also picked up wickets, with only Quinton de Kock shining for the South Africans, with his second half-century of the match. It was a very pleasing last session for us, said Bracewell. We spoke about giving it everything and we came out with plenty of energy. But he acknowledged that New Zealand would have a difficult time batting last. Its a tough wicket to bat on, going up and down a bit, he said.South Africas three-pronged pace attack was mainly responsible for New Zealand being bowled out for 214 in their first innings. Steyn and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each and Vernon Philander claimed two. With star bowlers Steyn and Philander both returning from long-term injuries, it was the first time they had played in the same Test match as Rabada, South Africas 21-year-old cricketer of the year.It made a good combination, said Steyn.Vernon is a phenomenal bowler. He keeps it so tight so you feel free to run in (and attack) from the other end. And KG (Rabada) is bowling at 150 kmh and getting wickets. The combination proved relentless, although it took South Africa more than an hour to take the first wicket of the day, when Rabada trapped Henry Nicholls leg before wicket for 36.Only captain Kane Williamson was able to provide sustained resistance for New Zealand. He was last man out for 77. While his team-mates struggled, Williamson remained calm and well-organised, seemingly with time to spare as he combatted the pace threat. He batted for 286 minutes and faced 133 balls in an innings which included eight fours and a six.New Zealands resistance crumbled after the breakthrough, although South Africa lost control briefly when Rabada and Steyn peppered number ten batsman Neil Wagner with bouncers, probably in retaliation for Wagners short-pitched assault during South Africas first innings of 481 for eight declared.Wagner was struck on the helmet by Rabada but responded by slogging four fours and a six in an innings of 31 before he was caught behind off Steyn.Off-spinner Dane Piedt picked up the wicket of Tim Southee, while Ross Taylor was run out duringNew Zealands collapse on the second evening.Three of the first five wickets came through successful reviews by South Africa after their initial appeals had been turned down. After a maiden over from Southee to Stephen Cook to start the second innings, De Kock hit the first four balls of the next over from Boult for fours before hitting Southee for four and six off successive deliveries in the third over.New Zealand hit back, however, with three wickets in 10 balls. Cook was trapped in front by Boult for four before Southee dismissed Hashim Amla, caught at first slip, and JP Duminy, leg before wicket, in the next over.Captain Faf du Plessis and De Kock tried to rebuild the innings but first innings centurion Du Plessis made only six before he was caught at first slip off Boult.De Kock seemed untroubled by the struggles of his team-mates, going to his second half-century of the match off 42 balls, with eight fours and a six. But one ball later he received a vicious bouncer from Doug Bracewell which he gloved to gully.
