English champions Leicester break transfer record

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Premier League champions Leicester paid a reported club record fee of 29.7 million ($38 million, 34 million euros) to sign Algeria striker Islam Slimani from Sporting Portugal on Wednesday.Slimani agreed a five-year contract with Claudio Ranieris side after scoring 27 times in 33 league games for the Lisbon side last season. The 28-year-olds arrival shatters Leicesters previous transfer record of 16 million, which they paid for Nigerian striker Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow in July.To join a team like Leicester City is a huge honour and I cant wait to get started, Slimani told Leicesters website.Ive always wanted to play my football in the Premier League and to get the opportunity to do that with the reigning champions was something I simply could not turn down.I saw the amazing success of last season and the passion of the clubs supporters. Thats something that Im so excited to be a part of.Sporting said Leicester would pay an initial 25.5 million, with the fee potentially rising by another 4.2 million.Slimani will team up with fellow Algerian Riyad Mahrez at the King Power Stadium.Mahrez was voted Player of the Year after playing a key role in Leicesters fairytale title triumph last season and he convinced Slimani he would benefit from joining Ranieris squad. My friend Riyad Mahrez spoke to me about the club and about the atmosphere the Leicester fans create at King Power Stadium, Slimani said.I will give absolutely everything I have on the pitch for them and for my team-mates and I hope that together we can achieve something special.Slimani has represented Algeria at both the 2013 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as well as in the 2014 World Cup.With the help of Mahrez and Slimani, Algeria qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Qatar prepares for 2018 and 2022 World Cups

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Qatar football officials are concerned right now with qualification for the 2018 World Cup finals, but preparations continue apace for the Gulf states controversial hosting of the 2022 tournament.Despite continued human rights and trade unions concerns over labour, a Swiss corruption investigation into the awarding of the tournament to the tiny Gulf emirate, switching the tournament from its traditional June and July to November and December because of the desert countrys fierce summer, and a drop in oil prices hitting the countrys energy-reliant economy, Qatar remains on schedule to host footballs biggest tournament. This week, a senior official from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the group overseeing the organisation of the tournament, told Arabic language daily Al Watan that all projects for 2022 will be delivered on time.Work on the Qatar 2022 projects is going full swing, said executive director, Ali Ghanim al-Kuwari.All the projects are in an advanced stage of design and implementation.FIFA is set to make a final decision on the number of stadiums to be used in 2022 by the end of this year, but it is widely expected to be eight.Earlier this summer, Jurgen Muller, FIFAs head of planning and infrastructure, told a Doha conference that Qatars infrastructure and stadium projects were well on track.Of the eight stadiums, all but one -- Al Bayt -- are located in the capital Doha or its suburbs.Building work has begun on six of the stadiums and the first stadium, Khalifa International, should be completed by the beginning of 2017, said al-Kuwari.Khalifa will also host the World Athletics Championships in 2019.And it is the stadium where earlier this year Amnesty International alleged workers suffered abuses, in some cases forced labour.Building work on all stadiums to be used in the World Cup should finish by 2020, organisers have previously stated. In May this year, Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee said the cost for the stadiums was around $10 billion (9bn euros).Spending on direct World Cup projects, such as stadiums, appears to be unaffected so far as Qatar adjusts it expenditure to cope with the global slump in oil prices. But there are potential bumps in the road as spending on other projects face cuts.Qatar is forecast to run a budget deficit in 2016, its first in 15 years.Unless there is a major shift in the oil price, that will be repeated in 2017 and 2018.Qatar is spending more than $200 billion on major infrastructure projects, such as a subway system that will transport fans to games in 2022, major roadworks and a new city, Lusail, where the 2022 World Cup final will be played. But it has already cut back on spending in some areas -- hundreds of jobs have been shed at broadcaster Al Jazeera and the state-funded Qatar Museums, while spending on healthcare facilities dropped. To emphasise the problems, this week Dohas Hamad International Airport introduced an airport tax on passengers as the country seeks fresh revenue streams. In mid-December, it is expected that Qatar will announce the end of its much-criticised kafala labour system, the source of much criticism from international human rights groups.Kafala, which places restrictions on workers ability to change jobs and travel, is to be replaced by a contract system. However, it is unlikely to placate critics and further damning reports of labour practice in Qatar are expected to be launched this autumn.

Konta goes through in US Open despite heat illness

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Johanna Konta collapsed with apparent heat illness but shook off the scare to beat Tsvetana Pironkova in three sets Wednesday to reach the third round of the US Open. The 13th seeded Briton said she was a little embarrassed by all the drama, but expected to be ready to go against Switzerlands Belinda Bencic in the third round on Friday.Im doing everything that I can to recover well and try to get myself into a state to be ready to compete again, said Konta, who said shed gone through a similar scare on court before.Basically my heart rate spiked and I couldnt really control my breathing, she said.I started hyperventilating. I started shaking. Thats why I went down on the ground, because I was quite violently shaking.Konta was serving to try to force a second-set tiebreaker when she was stricken, slumping to her knees at the baseline. She sat on the court with bags of ice on her body until medical personnel arrived and took her blood pressure.I feel like my whole body is in shock, she told the doctor. My heart rate went up. My vision became blurred. When play resumed after a medical timeout, Konta surrendered her serve and the set. She then departed for a lengthy toilet break that included a long walk from court 13 to the nearest convenience. She returned somewhat refreshed, promptly broke Pironkova and closed out a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory. After some time sitting courtside Konta apologized to fans for not signing autographs and departed.Pironkova, while crediting Konta with the better performance on the day, said she was frustrated by the lengthy comfort break, during which Konta had to be shepherded through the crowds away from the court. With that toilet break I think the match was stopped for just too long, she said. It was an unfortunate time. I had my momentum going, I was getting back in the match.Probably that break somehow maybe stopped that momentum, but then again, I dont want to make excuses for myself.- Scary moment -================Pironkova was also careful to say that Konta, the 13th seed who claimed her maiden WTA title in Stanford this year, acted within the rules.Today Im not very happy about these rules, to be able to go and change your clothes after every set, it didnt work out good for me today. But these are the rules, she said. When Konta collapsed, apparently suffering in the steamy 31-degree heat, Pironkova felt only concern. When you see the player that youre playing against look like this, that she couldnt stand, its scary, she said. And she was relieved shed never gone through anything like it herself.Oh, thank god no, she said. I havent and Im really grateful for that. Its probably horrible.Konta, however, was matter-of-fact.Im definitely not the first person to have these sort of struggles on court, she said.Im definitely not going to be the last. Its part of our sport. Its part of the conditions that we play in. All any of us can do is just deal with it the best that we can.

Turkish interior minister resigns in surprise move

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala, a loyalist of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Wednesday resigned in a surprise move, the prime minister announced. After a hastily-convened meeting with Erdogan, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Ala had stepped down and would be replaced by Suleyman Soylu, the current labour and social security minister. There was no official explanation for why Ala had quit and Turkish media said it was unexpected.Yildirim thanked Ala for his services. The ministerial change follows a failed July 15 coup, which was blamed on supporters of US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, an arch enemy of Erdogan. The abortive putsch raised questions about intelligence failings which government officials have acknowledged.Ala had served as interior minister for nearly three years. He also previously acted as undersecretary to Erdogan, when the president was prime minister.Ala leaves the post as the insurgency between Turkish security forces and militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rages following the collapse of a two-year truce last summer.

Brazil's Rousseff stripped of presidency, Temer sworn in

Posted:

BRASILIA (AFP) - Brazils Dilma Rousseff was stripped of the countrys presidency in an impeachment vote Wednesday and replaced by her bitter rival Michel Temer, shifting Latin Americas biggest economy sharply to the right.Rousseff, 68, was convicted by 61 of the 81 senators of illegally manipulating the national budget. The vote, which exceeded the needed two-thirds majority, meant the veteran leftist leader was immediately removed from office.Three hours later, Temer -- her center-right former vice president and one time crucial coalition partner whom she now accuses of orchestrating a coup against her -- was sworn in.Cheers -- and cries of disappointment -- erupted in the blue-carpeted, circular Senate chamber as the impeachment verdict flashed up on the electronic voting screen.Pro-impeachment senators sang the national anthem, some waving Brazilian flags, while leftist allies of Rousseff stood stony faced. I will not associate my name with this infamy, read a sign held up by one senator.Coup plotters others chanted. In a surprise twist, a separate vote to bar Rousseff from holding any public office for eight years failed to pass, meaning she could in theory re-enter political life.Speaking at the Alvorada presidential palace on the outskirts of the capital Brasilia, Rousseff, from the leftist Workers Party, condemned her forced exit. They decided to interrupt the mandate of a president who had committed no crime. They have convicted an innocent person and carried out a parliamentary coup, she said, defiantly vowing that shed be back.Temer, 75, was to mark his first day as president by flying late Wednesday to China for a G20 summit. A recorded address to the nation was expected to be released later.A stalwart of the center-right PMDB party, Temer has vowed to steer Brazil away from 13 years of Workers Party rule in hopes that a more market-friendly track will resolve the countrys worst recession in decades.Rousseff is accused of taking illegal state loans to patch budget holes in 2014, masking the countrys problems as it slid into todays economic disarray. She told the Senate during a marathon 14-hour session on Monday that she is innocent and that abuse of the impeachment process put Brazils democracy, restored in 1985 after a two-decades-long military dictatorship, at risk.Recalling how she was tortured and imprisoned in the 1970s for belonging to a leftist guerrilla group, Rousseff urged senators to vote against impeachment, vote for democracy. However, huge anti-Rousseff street demonstrations over the last year have reflected nationwide anger at her management of a country suffering double-digit unemployment and inflation. The once mighty Workers Party, meanwhile, has struggled to stage more than small rallies.Temer, who was in an uncomfortable partnership with Rousseff before finally splitting from her, will be president until the next scheduled elections in late 2018.Better known as a backroom wheeler-dealer than street politician, Temer took over in an interim role after Rousseffs initial suspension in May.He immediately named a new government that turned its back on more than a decade of leftist rule in which Brazil saw 29 million people lifted from poverty, but became bogged down in corruption and the ongoing economic slump.Temer has earned plaudits from investors. It remains uncertain whether he will have voters support to push through the painful austerity reforms he promises.About 50 leftist demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace to show their support for Rousseff. We are protesting against the coup and fighting for democracy, said 61-year-old farmer Orlando Ribeiro. In the center of the capital, extra security and the closing of avenues near the Senate caused massive traffic jams. Police said they were preparing for large protests later in the day.Venezuela and Ecuador both pulled their ambassadors from Brazil in protest at Rousseffs removal. On the Senate floor, emotions crackled in the run-up to the vote, then overflowed as senators made final speeches on what both sides of the debate agreed was history in the making.Renan Calheiros, the Senate president, rejected Rousseffs claim of a coup, saying her impeachment might not have been perfect, but had the DNA of democracy, the DNA of the constitution.Senator Aecio Neves, Rousseffs narrowly defeated center-right opponent in her 2014 reelection, pronounced triumphantly: The constitution won. Brazil wonBut Senator Vanessa Grazziotin was scathing in her summing up of an illegal process that is called impeachment but is a coup.Temer does not have legitimacy to govern this country, she warned. This is a farce, a farce, a farce, shouted Another pro-Rousseff senator, Lindberg Farias.Shaking his fists at the majority backing impeachment, he cried: Theyre going in the garbage can of history.

Turkey denies truce with Syrian Kurdish militia

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkey said Wednesday a truce with Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria was out of the question, denying a US claim the two sides had agreed to hold fire a week into Turkeys cross-border offensive. In an unprecedented operation, Turkey has been deploying tanks and troops in Syria to clear the border area of Islamic State (IS) jihadists and halt the westward advance of a US-backed Kurdish militia, which Ankara sees as a terrorist group. The assault on the Kurdish-led forces has sparked international concern and Washington had said on Tuesday that the two sides had agreed to a ceasefire. But Ankara dismissed this claim.Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said a truce was out of the question. They will remain our target unless they retreat east of the Euphrates, he said, repeating Turkeys demand that the Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) retreat to the northeast.Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Wednesday the operation would continue until terror elements are completely neutralised and threats to our border, soil and citizens are over. For their part, the Kurdish-backed militias said they had agreed to what US Central Command spokesman Colonel John Thomas called a loose agreement to stop fighting.Ankaras bombardments of their positions appeared to have eased, with no reports of any such strikes since Monday.Turkish forces and their Syrian rebel allies have kept up their fight against IS, whose strategist Abu Mohamed al-Adnani was killed in an air strike Tuesday claimed both by the US-led anti-IS coalition and Russia. After driving Kurdish-backed fighters south away from the border town of Jarabulus wrested from IS last week, the Turkish forces and their Syrian rebel allies on Tuesday engaged IS fighters west of the town, Turkish media said.Turkish warplanes later conducted air strikes against terrorist targets nearby, the state-run Anadolu agency said, referring to IS.Meanwhile, with IS apparently on the back foot, Russias military said Wednesday one of its air strikes had killed propaganda chief Adnani.A day earlier, the Pentagon said he was targeted by US-led coalition forces.Turkey sees the YPG as an offshoot of the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is waging a bloody insurgency against security forces in Turkeys southeast. In the past few months, Turkey has watched in alarm as the PKKs Syrian Kurdish allies advance on the other side of the border, fearing their territorial expansion will strengthen the PKK.However, the US-led anti-IS coalition has been backing the YPG with training and equipment.Washington described weekend clashes between Turkey and the Kurdish-led forces as unacceptable and urged the warring parties to stop fighting each other and concentrate on combatting IS. Turkish media reported that Ankara summoned the US ambassador to protest the US criticism.A spokesman for the Turkish foreign ministry, however, told AFP that there was only a phone call to the ambassador, John Bass.Turkeys offensive has also raised concerns that Ankara could be drawn even deeper into the Syrian conflict.Iran, a key backer of President Bashar al-Assads regime, urged Turkey to quickly wrap up its campaign, calling it a violation of Syrian sovereignty.Turkey has said Syria was informed in advance of the operation by Russia.Meanwhile, the Turkish army, which lost a soldier last week to anti-tank fire, suffered further casualties.Three Turkish soldiers were injured in a rocket attack on a tank near Jarabulus, according to Turkish television. On Tuesday, Turkish troops and their rebel allies came under attack in IS-held territory to the west of Jarabulus, with the jihadists claiming to have destroyed two Turkish tanks in a missile attack. The group also claimed to have carried out a suicide car bombing against Turkish-backed rebels in the same area and said it had killed dozens of Turkish soldiers and Turkish-backed rebels.Kalin said the Jarabulus operation had killed a myth that the Kurdish militia was the only effective force on the ground in the fight against IS, adding: The moderate Syrian opposition, if supported, could put up an effective fight.

US 'deeply concerned' by Israeli settlement decision

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States rebuked Israel on Wednesday over what it said was its accelerated building of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank in the face of mounting international concern. This significant expansion of the settlement activity poses a serious and growing threat to the viability of a two state solution, President Barack Obamas spokesman Josh Earnest said.We are particularly troubled by the policy of retroactively approving illegal outposts and unauthorized settlements, he added, briefing reporters aboard Air Force One en route for China.Washington has long been concerned that Israels building on occupied Palestinian land is undermining hopes for a Middle East peace deal, but Wednesdays warning was unusually strongly worded. An official said Israels actions ran counter to the advice laid out by the Middle East Quartet, a contact group comprising the United Nations, European Union, Russia and the United States. We are deeply concerned by the government of Israels announcement today to advance plans for over 500 new settlement units in the West Bank, a senior official told AFP on condition of anonymity. This significant expansion of the settlement enterprise poses a very serious and growing threat to the viability of the two-state solution, he added, warning Israel could torpedo peace hopes. The United States has urged Israel and the Palestinians to take meaningful steps to build trust, but Israel has instead promoted the building of thousands of new settlement homes. These policies have effectively given the governments green light for the pervasive advancement of settlement activity in a new and potentially unlimited way, the senior official warned. As the Quartet report highlights, we are concerned about a systematic process of land seizures, settlement expansions and legalizations, he said. This, the official warned, fundamentally undermines the prospects for a two-state solution and risks entrenching a one-state reality of perpetual occupation and conflict.Israel has defended its settlement building, arguing that Jews have lived in the West Bank and Jerusalem -- the divided city claimed by both Israel and Palestinians as a capital -- for thousands of years. But the US official warned the Israeli government risks undermining its own case with its aggressive settlement program and a dramatic acceleration in the demolition of Palestinian buildings.

Trump in Mexico: US has right to build border wall

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump on Wednesday stood alongside Mexicos President Enrique Pena Nieto and declared that the United States has the right to erect a border wall to stem illegal immigration. We recognize and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders, Trump said at the presidential residence in Mexico City after the two men held closed-door talks. He acknowledged, however, that they did not discuss who will pay for the wall, despite Trump persistently stating throughout his campaign that Mexico will foot the bill for the highly controversial project. We didnt discuss that. We didnt discuss who pays for the wall, Trump said. After a year of lobbing insults at Mexico, the provocative billionaire candidate was making a surprise visit to the neighboring country in the heat of the US presidential campaign, seeking to seize control of the narrative and portray himself as a capable statesman on the international stage. It was a day of high drama for both men, who found themselves face to face after having exchanged criticisms from afar over the past year. After Trump launched his presidential campaign last year by declaring that Mexico was sending rapists and other criminals across the border, Pena Nieto likened the New York businessmans isolationist positions to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and fascist Benito Mussolini. On Wednesday Pena Nieto was far more diplomatic, saying it was crucial to transform the countries shared border from a controversy into an asset for our region. But he did not hide the fact that many in his country have felt the sting of Trumps harsh rhetoric.Mexican people felt hurt by the comments made, Pena Nieto said, with Trump at his side. But Im sure that the genuine interest is to build a relationship that will give both of our societies better welfare.Trump said the two allied nations could improve ties by addressing five points: ending illegal immigration, securing the border, dismantling drug cartels, improving NAFTA -- the 22-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement that Trump argues has been a disaster for the United States -- and maintaining manufacturing wealth in the region.Trump was to immediately fly to Phoenix, Arizona where he will give a highly anticipated speech on his immigration policies.
