Tennis: Murray breezes past Isner for seventh time

VIENNA (AFP) - Andy Murray defeated injured John Isner for the seventh time in seven meetings Friday to reach the Vienna semi-finals and take another step closer to deposing Novak Djokovic as world number one.Murray, the 2014 champion in the Austrian capital, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over the big American who required treatment on his blistered right hand early in the second set.World number two Murray, who now has 68 wins in 2016 and is on a 14-match win streak, broke serve three times in a dominant opening set, committing just one unforced error to Isners 20.By the end of the one-sided affair, Murrays error count was just 10 to 35 to the outclassed American.Murray needs to win the Vienna title on Sunday, as well as next weeks Paris Masters, to have a chance to knock Djokovic off the world top spot.On Saturday, the 29-year-old faces defending champion and fifth seed David Ferrer who saved a match point and recovered from a break down to beat Serbias Viktor Troicki 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.Ferrer, who is attempting to extend a streak which has seen him reach at least one final in each of the past 11 years, will be up against it facing Murray -- he trails 6-14 with the Scot winning the last seven.Big-serving Ivo Karlovic saved a match point and fired 29 aces to defeat Russias Karen Khachanov 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to reach the semi-finals.Karlovic, 17 years older than his 20-year-old opponent, saved the match point in the 12th game of the second set.The Croatian veteran will next face sixth seed and 2011 champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France who defeated Spains Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 7-6 (7/5).Karlovic now has a season-leading 1,081 aces.

Tennis: Radwanska seals last semi spot at WTA Finals

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Polands Agnieszka Radwanska overpowered Karolina Pliskova 7-5 6-3 on Friday to clinch the last available place in the semi-finals of the WTA tour championship and stay on course to defend the title she won last year.Radwanksa made a stunning comeback to win the 2015 tournament despite losing her first two round-robin matches and made it through to the last four again after having lost her opening match by beating the big-serving Pliskova in a sudden-death showdown.I think that was simple, Radwanska said. You win, youre still there. You lose, youre out. Not much math here.I definitely knew I had to play my best tennis against her. She was showing only good tennis this week as well. The 27-year-old Pole will now face her good friend, world number one Angelique Kerber, in Saturdays semis with the winner to play either Russias Svetlana Kuznetsova or Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.Kuznetsova suffered her first loss of the tournament on Friday when she was beaten 3-6 6-0 6-1 by Spains French Open champion Garbine Muguruza but the result had no bearing on the semis with the Russian already assured of finishing top of the White Group and Muguruza out of contention after losing her first two matches.I have to be honest, going into this match was extremely hard for me, Muguruza said.At the end, my desire of wanting to be here and competing against the best, was a challenge for me today to see how I was going to react.Im very happy with the way I played today, the way I handled the match. A victory like today is going to keep me a little bit happier. It was a very tough tournament.Pliskova, who qualified for the elite end-of-season event when she reached the final of the US Open last month, led 4-2 in the opening set and was also a break up in the second before the more experienced Radwanska took control on the key points.Radwanksa has never lost to Pliskova in seven meetings and she capitalised on the Czechs 29 unforced errors, which included hitting two routine overheads into the net late in the second set.In this tournament, with the best eight players, you see that every match is close. Its just decided by a few balls, Pliskova said. She also knew she has to win. She always beats me, so I just believed that she might miss in the close moments a little bit but she didnt. I think she just controlled the whole match.Kuznetsova finally ran out of steam after winning a tournament in Moscow last weekend just to qualify for the WTA Finals then winning two gruelling matches at Singapores Indoor Stadium. The 31-year-old seemed to be in cruise control after she took the opening set against Muguruza but won just one game in the last two sets as the physical effects of the past week began to take a toll.Ive done the most important job in the past matches, Kuznetsova said. You definitely dont want to lose the match. You try to fight (but) sometimes the lack of energy just wont let you do that.

Tennis: Nishikori ends del Potro's Basel run

Posted:

BASEL (AFP) - Two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro went down swinging with 14 aces in a 7-5, 6-4 quarter-final loss to Kei Nishikori at the Swiss Indoors on Friday.Defeat in just under two hours wrapped up the ATP season for the Argentine, who will skip next weeks Paris Masters to return home to train for the Davis Cup final against Croatia.Nishikori will Saturday play to reach his second Basel final -- he lost the 2011 title match to Roger Federer -- when he takes on Gilles Muller, a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) winner over Argentine Federico Delbonis.Top seed Stan Wawrinka was playing qualifier Mischa Zverev in a later quarter-final while World Tour Finals hopeful Marin Cilic was bidding to reach the semi-finals as he played Spains Marcel Granollers. Wild card Del Potro, whose ranking of 42 is 1,000 places better than in February when he returned after almost a year of wrist problems and surgery, lost for the first time to third seed Nishikori. The pair last played four years ago at the London Olympics.Nishikori dealt out only seven aces, but fired his last one to earn a pair of match points -- one was enough as he put away a volley winner at the net. This was my best match of the week, said Nishikori as he ended a 12-match win streak for Del Potro at the Basel St Jakobshalle venue where the South American claimed the 2012 and 2013 titles over Federer. It was a tough match. I had so many chances, so many break points that I could not convert, said Nishikori, who fended off all eight break points against his serve.I played good tactics today, everything was working well.Del Potro was pleased with his week which came after he lifted his first title in nearly three years at Stockholm last Sunday.Ive been trying to fix my problems for the past two years, and I didnt expect to win a title at this moment in my career. Its still a motivation for looking forward to the future.

Eight injured in plane fire at Chicago airport

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - Eight people were injured when an American Airlines Boeing 767 bound for Miami caught fire Friday as it attempted to take off from Chicagos OHare airport, the company said. The blaze broke out on American Airlines Flight 383 -- with 161 passengers and nine crew on board -- as the plane was on the runway at one of the nations busiest airports.Seven passengers and one flight attendant suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, the airline said.We are taking care of our customers and crew and are re-accommodating our passengers on another flight to Miami this evening, the airline said. The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, with the Federal Aviation Administration and the airline offering conflicting information. The FAA said the plane suffered a tire blowout, but spokesman Tony Molinaro told AFP that that information was preliminary and based on initial reports from the planes pilots. In a written statement, American Airlines blamed the incident on an engine-related issue.Bystanders posted photos and videos on social media showing black smoke billowing from the airliner. One video showed passengers coming down emergency slides and running away from the aircraft, with black smoke and flames visible on the right side of the plane.Emergency crews surrounded the jet, which appeared to be intact on the runway, though its right side and right wing were charred. The FAA said it was investigating the incident and the National Transportation Safety Board had been notified.Service was not interrupted at OHare.

Vettel hands Ferrari boost, Hamilton edges Rosberg

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Sebastian Vettel added the prospect of another unexpected dimension to the drivers title battle on Friday when he put his Ferrari on top of the times in second free practice for this weekends Mexican Grand Prix. The four-time champion was fastest with a best lap in one minute and 19.790 seconds -- just 0.004 seconds quicker than Hamilton who, in turn, was three-tenths of a second ahead of his championship leading Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. If he can maintain that speed and form, Vettel could not only influence the result of Sundays race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but also play a key part in the outcome of the championship duel between the Briton and the German.Yes, of course, I am happy, but it is Friday and maybe too early to talk like that, said Vettel.I think we need to be realistic. I dont think Lewis had the best of laps today. It didnt look particularly good so I think he has a little bit more in his pocket so lets be realistic. But if we can do this again and be here again, at the front, I will take that. It has been a good day for us. We had the pace and we had no problems.Vettels unexpected revivial in the thin air of the high-altitude circuit created the prospect of Ferrari playing a role in the outcome of the race and, possibly, splitting the two Mercedes drivers.Rosberg goes into the race with a lead of 26 points with three races remaining knowing that if he wins on Sunday he can take his maiden title if Hamilton fails to score more than a single point.Defending three-time world champion Hamilton made three attempts to beat Vettels time without success, but did a steady job throughout the day. Both Mercedes drivers were locked in intense race preparations with their race teams as they concentrated on set-up and tyres in particular.Kimi Raikkonen endorsed the improvement by the Italian team by clocking the fourth best time in the second Ferrari, 0.469 seconds down, ahead of fifth-placed Australian Daniel Ricciardo in the leading Red Bull.Ricciardo conceded that he felt it may be more difficult for Red Bull to impress at the Mexican circuit than they have at other recent events. It may not be easy, but we know from previous races that anything can happen and if we can get the best from the tyres we can be thereabouts. I am sure we are going to be quick in race trim.Asked about his possible role as king-maker, he said he had no intention of thinking about it and would concentrate on racing hard as usual.I will treat it the same as always and race hard, he said. The championship will be settled over the 21 races and thats what will happen. Lets see.Nico Hulkenberg was sixth for Force India ahead of Max Verstappen in the second Red Bull, the Dutch teenager setting his best laps on the medium tyres while most of his rivals were running on super-softs.Valtteri Bottas was eighth for Williams, ahead of the two Spaniards, Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso and two-time champion Ferando Alonso of McLaren-Honda.Williams team boss Frank Williams was not in Mexico as he remained in hospital in England where he was reported to be recovering from pneumonia. His daughter Claire Williams, the teams deputy chief, was also absent having decided to stay with him.

Mourinho bars Rooney from Manchester United escape

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Wayne Rooney will not be allowed to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window despite his frustrations at losing his starting place at Old Trafford and interest from his former club Everton.Ronald Koeman, in charge at the club Rooney left to join United in the summer of 2004, has become the first Premier League manager to express an interest in signing the England captain should Jose Mourinho be prepared to allow him to leave.Mourinho stated categorically not only will Rooney, 31, be told to forget leaving but he also expects the experienced veteran to play a key role in his attempts to return United to the top of the English game.I know he can still play at the highest level. I know hes the type of player I need, said Mourinho. He can play at the top level. I cant say whats going to happen when hes 32, 3, 4, 5 but what I can say is that hes a very good player, a very important player for us. Hes going nowhere. We like him, he likes us. Hes not happy in the last matches because he was on the bench but I think he is even unhappier when hes not on the bench because hes been injured and has to stay in the stands. There are no problems at all. Hes my captain. He is the team captain. He behaves like that.In all my career I have had just a couple of players, they didnt want to play and sometimes they wanted to hide when things got hotter.Koeman had earlier talked, in general terms, about a potential interest in Rooney, who left Goodison as a 19-year-old in a 20 million transfer in the summer of 2004.Even when we get one time the possibility that Rooney is an option for Everton, Im very pleased, said Koeman.I am not at United, I dont see sessions and every game. It is a decision of the manager of Manchester United. But he is 31, he is not finished, he still has two or three years at least at the highest level.Wayne Rooney is a top player and, of course, if there is one day when he is available of course we would like to have him but it is too early and I dont like to speak about players who are under contract at other teams.Earlier in the week, reports had suggested Mourinho might be prepared to give Koeman -- and other rivals -- encouragement in their hopes of luring Rooney away from Old Trafford. But Mourinho moved to quickly dispel such suggestions, although he accepts the forward, who lost his starting place on the national team shortly after suffering a similar fate with his club, has found this a trying period in his career.I think hes a human being like everybody else. He has family, like everybody else, he said.He has kids, the oldest one at an age where he can read, he can feel, he gets affected by that. Its just human nature but I think hes a big boy, a big character. He copes with the situation.

Stock market closes lower on FBI probe into Clinton emails

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The FBI bombshell that it is reopening the investigation into US presidential candidate Hillary Clintons email scandal jolted markets and sent US stocks, the dollar and oil prices lower Friday.Eleven days before the US election, Wall Street had been comfortably in positive territory prior to the news that Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey was restarting the probe into Clintons use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.Clinton, the Democratic nominee, has been the markets preferred choice over Republican Donald Trump, viewed by many investors as unpredictable. Analysts said the development raises the chances of a Trump win, after weeks during which Clinton handily led the polls. One of the things we felt more certain about over the course of the last week or two has been the result at the top of the ballot, and this probably throws that into question, said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities.Thats not going to be good for markets. And Chris Low of FTN Financial, said the news at the very least it is going to require some new thinking ahead of the November 8 presidential elections, leaving little time for the FBI to resolve the matter.I think that is what is motivating people to sell because it just creates a huge amount of uncertainty. The dollar plunged against all the major currencies after the FBI announcement, but regained some territory before the close. The Mexican peso sank against the dollar but also later rebounded slightly.Meanwhile oil prices were hit with a double whammy of the FBI news and uncertainty over OPECs ability to negotiate production limits and win the cooperation of non-cartel producers. The Brent price dropped back below $50 as talks in Vienna failed to work out details of the tentative deal reached last month, although they are expected to continue over the weekend.Weve got some news out of OPEC and things are still very complicating and it sounds like the agreement to come to some sort of freeze or cut is likely not going to happen, said Oliver Sloup of iiTrader.com.European markets wobbled ahead of a raft of data and policy decisions in the week ahead.Frankfurt, London and Paris diverged, while in Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai ended just down and Tokyo up marginally. The Bank of Japan and the Reserve Bank of Australia will deliver their latest interest rate calls Tuesday, followed by the US Federal Reserve Wednesday and the Bank of England Thursday. The eurozone releases third quarter GDP Monday, and the US releases the critical October jobs report Friday.New York - Dow: DOWN 0.2 percent to 18,161.19 (close)New York - S&P 500: DOWN 0.1 percent to 2,126.41 (close)New York - Nasdaq: DOWN 0.5 percent to 5,190.10 (close)London - FTSE 100: UP 0.1 percent at 6,996.26 points (close)Frankfurt - DAX 30: DOWN 0.2 percent at 10,696.19 (close)Paris - CAC 40: UP 0.3 percent at 4,548.58 (close)EURO STOXX 50: DOWN 0.2 percent to 3,079.24 (close)Tokyo - Nikkei 225: UP 0.6 percent at 17,446.41 (close)Hong Kong - Hang Seng: DOWN 0.8 percent at 22,954.81 (close)Shanghai - Composite: DOWN 0.3 percent at 3,104.27 (close)Euro/dollar: UP to $1.0987 from $1.0898 ThursdayDollar/yen: DOWN to 104.73 yen from 105.20 yenPound/dollar: UP to $1.2187 from $1.2166Euro/pound: UP to 90.16 pence from 89.57 penceOil - West Texas Intermediate: DOWN $1.02 to $48.70 per barrelOil - Brent North Sea: DOWN 76 cents at $49.71

Mischa Zverev stuns US Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka in Basel

Posted:

BASEL, Switzerland (AFP) - Top seed and US Open champion Stan Wawrinka slumped to a shock 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 defeat to German qualifier Mischa Zverev on Friday, limping out of the Swiss Indoors event in the quarter-finals.Zverev, 29, and ranked 72 in the world, will face either Croatian fourth seed Marin Cilic or Spains Marcel Granollers for a place in the final.Wawrinka has a poor history at the Swiss tournament played in Roger Federers hometown, despite playing the event for 13 of the last 14 years. He ended a run of four straight first-round defeats with a pair of wins this week having made his only real impression in 2011 with a semi-final against Federer.Wawrinka was broken for 2-5 in the first set, got the tie back level by winning the second before going down a double break in the decider on his way to defeat in just under two hours.Two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro hit 14 aces but still went down to a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Kei Nishikori.Defeat wrapped up the ATP season for the Argentine, who will skip next weeks Paris Masters to return home to train for the Davis Cup final against Croatia.Nishikori will Saturday play to reach his second Basel final -- he lost the 2011 title match to Federer -- when he takes on Gilles Muller, a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) winner over Argentine Federico Delbonis.Wild card Del Potro, whose ranking of 42 is 1,000 places better than in February when he returned after almost a year of wrist problems and surgery, lost for the first time to third seed Nishikori. Its still a motivation for looking forward to the future.I felt exhausted during the whole match, I couldnt fight as I wanted. I had chances at the start of the first set, but Kei played very smart.Ive played so many matches, its too much for me. But Im finishing the season well, Im so glad for that.

Ton-up Tamim has no defence for teammates

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal made no attempt to defend his teammates who were unable to build on his century in the first innings of the second Test against England on Friday. In a topsy-turvy days play in Dhaka, opener Tamim made 104 runs off 147 balls while Mominul Haque scored 66 as the hosts surged to what should have been a commanding score of 171 for one.But Tamims dismissal, lbw to Moeen Ali, sparked a spectacular collapse, as Bangladesh lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs and were folded for 220 with seven of their batsmen failing to make double figures.I cant give an explanation for this collapse, Tamim said after opening days play.We played some wrong shots, some were good deliveries, but if we had scored 100 more runs from what we got, the game would have been in our favour. The ball started to spin after 45 overs, but this can happen, he said.Ali finished with 5-57 but Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes also had their share of credit as they picked up five wickets together to expedite the collapse.England then suffered their own mini-collapse as they were reduced to 50 for three before rain brought an early end to proceedings, 11.3 overs before the scheduled close of play. The way the wickets fell today, my century has suddenly become special, said Tamim, who hit 12 boundaries. If we could have added 50 runs to our 170-run stand...it would have been better for the team. The blame lies with everyone, from myself to Rabbi (last man Kamrul Islam). But we got three crucial wickets so we could still make a game of it tomorrow, he said.Tamim took 20 balls to get off the mark but grew in confidence to bring his century in style hitting Moeen for back-to-back fours through cover. He said he made an error of judgement after reaching three figure mark that cost him his wicket. He padded up a delivery in Moeens next over without offering any shot and umpire raised the finger without any delay. He unsuccessfully reviewed the call but replay showed ball was going to brush off his leg stump, ending his highly impressive innings rather on a disappointing note. It was the third ball I had left like that. I wasnt doing it on purpose, he said.In the Chittagong wicket, the ball was turning from that spot so maybe I was thinking about it. I made the mistake. I should have offered a shot, he said.

England's Moeen rejoices success as bowler

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Off-spinner Moeen Ali said he has become more mature as a bowler these days after the second five-wicket haul of his career helped England dismiss Bangladesh for 220 runs and gain the edge in the second Test in Dhaka on Friday.England were looking for someone to bail them out when Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal hit a fluent century and threatened to put them under heaps of runs with his confident batting.Moeen responded by dismissing Tamim for 104 and then bowling out his partner in 170-run second wicket stand Mominul Haque for 66 to trigger a dramatic Bangladesh collapse. He finished with 5-57 as Bangladesh lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs with seven of their batsmen failing to make double figure.I dont really have that much success as a spinner but I think the pace (in which) I bowl is used to test quality batters, that helps, he said.Im trying to get more consistent...Im nowhere near where I want to be as a spinner but I feel the 30 games helped me a little bit, he said.Ali, whose only previous five-wicket haul in 33 Tests came against India, said he owed his success to his five maiden overs in his third spell after the lunch break, which built some pressure on Bangladeshi batsmen.Im obviously happy to get the five wickets but I was more happy that I bowled a few maidens which I dont normally do often, he said.I tried to bowl as tight as I could today in my third spell and I think today that paid off really well.Moeen said they planned at the lunch break to keep it tight and not lose their patience, which finally brought them success.Tamim hit him for two back-to-back fours to complete his century but Ali insisted it could not demoralise him. Ive been hit plenty of times, so I dont get too down, he said.I just try and bowl my next ball as best as I can. When they were 170-1 (after) lunch we spoke about showing some character and trying to bowl as tight as we can, to slow it down a little bit if we can.We always feel that if we can get a couple of wickets, then we can bowl them out, he said.Moeen felt the game was left in the balance after Bangladesh managed to take three key England wickets in the evening session to leave the visitors at 50-3 at stumps on the first day.England can wrestle ahead provided they can get a few good partnerships, said Moeen, who was unbeaten with two with the bat overnight. Its 50-50 at the minutes. a couple of big partnerships and, if we can go close or go past their score, were right in the game, he said.

England stutter after Bangladesh collapse

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Tamim Iqbal scored his eighth Test century before Moeen Ali took 5-57 to spark a spectacular collapse as England dismissed Bangladesh for 220 runs on the first day of the second Test Friday. In a topsy-turvy days play in Dhaka, opener Tamim made a quickfire 104 off 147 balls while Mominul Haque scored 66 as the hosts surged to what should have been a commanding score of 171 for one.But Tamims dismissal, lbw to Ali, sparked a spectacular collapse, as Bangladesh lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs with seven of their batsmen failing to make double figures.England then suffered their own mini-collapse as they were reduced to 50 for three before rain brought an early end to proceedings, 11.3 overs before the scheduled close of play at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.Shakib Al Hasan removed Ben Duckett for seven before young Mehedi Hasan ended Alastair Cooks innings at 14 through lbw.Cook, who equalled Michael Athertons record of 54 Tests as England captain at the start of play, was initially given not out but the decision was overturned after Bangladesh reviewed.Mehedi then dismissed Gary Ballance for nine, the batsmans third single figure score of the series, to bring Bangladesh right back into the game, with England still trailing them by 170 runs. Ali was unbeaten on two at the close, leaving him at the centre stage at the start of day two of the Test after his starring role in the drama of the opening day.Its a good cricket game at the end of the day, said AliObviously losing three wickets at the end put us back a little bit ... I think its 50-50 at the minute.Tamim and Mominul dominated the morning session after Woakes earned England an early breakthrough removing opener Imrul Kayes for one, with Duckett taking a spectacular catch at point.Tamim smashed 12 boundaries but he became Alis first victim of the day shortly after driving the same bowler for back-to-back fours through the cover to bring up his third century in six Tests against England. It ended his 170-run stand with Mominul, who had also looked solid until he too was bowled by Ali for 66.The way the wickets fell today, my century has suddenly become special, Tamim said after the first day.The blame lies with everyone, from myself to Rabbi (last man Kamrul Islam). But we got three crucial wickets so we could still make a game of it tomorrow. The all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes shared the other five wickets as the tourists tightened the noose on a Bangladeshi side still reeling from the disappointment of losing the first Test by just 22 runs.Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim had called on his team before the start of the Test to show more consistency and learn how to drive home their advantage at key points in matches. But the rapid succession of wickets in the afternoon session pointed to Bangladeshs continued frailty in high-pressure situations, severely damaging their hopes of squaring the two-match series.England made two changes to the team that won the first Test last Monday in Chittagong, with left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari handed a Test debut for Gareth Batty and paceman Steven Finn coming in for Stuart Broad who has been rested.Bangladesh picked all-rounder Shuvagata Hom ahead of Shafiul Islam in their only change. They are playing with just one specialist fast bowler.
