Botham says don't judge England for performance against Bangladesh

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ian Botham believes Englands end of year tour programme will be judged on their upcoming five-Test tour of India, rather than a stunning loss to Bangladesh.England, 100 without loss at tea on Sundays third day in Dhaka, collapsed to 164 all out on a spin-friendly pitch to lose by 108 runs -- their first Test match defeat by Bangladesh. The result saw Bangladesh share the two-match series 1-1 and raised fresh concerns over how England would cope in similar conditions in India, whose attack will feature off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin -- Test crickets number one-ranked bowler. It (a rapid collapse) can happen in that part of the world, England great Botham told AFP in an interview in London on Sunday. The wickets are tailored, they are designed to spin. When you see spinners opening in Tests with the new ball, you get an idea of whats coming. Its good for them (Bangladesh). But what theyve got to do is to start winning outside of their own country. Thats the acid test and thats what England have got to do now.At the end of the day, theyll be judged not so much on what happens in Bangladesh, but they will be judged more on what happens in India. While questions remain about Englands spinners, and their ability to play spin, Botham said all was far from lost for Alastair Cooks side as they headed to India.England have got the bowlers who can take the pitch out of the equation with reverse swing, the former pace bowling all-rounder added. If they go out there and they perform they can win.Stuart Broad, controversially rested in Dhaka, is set to lead Englands pace attack and make his 100th Test appearance when the India series opener in Rajkot starts on November 9.I presented him with his cap when he first played in Colombo, said Botham. There was stuff about Stuart Broad the enforcer. He got a bit caught up in that. But hes bowled his best spells when he bowls at the top of off stump, Australia at The Oval (when Broad took four for eight in 2009), Australia at Trent Bridge (eight for 15 in 2015).- Box office Stokes -=======================As for the decision to rest Broad, Botham said: Bowlers, rotate them. I was more in the Ben Stokes category. He wont get rested and I wouldnt have either.Durham all-rounder Stokes starred with both bat and ball in Englands 22-run win in the first Test against Bangladesh and Botham said: I think hes fantastic. I think hes box office. I love watching him play, I like his attitude, I like the aggression.Hes the kind of cricketer youll cross the road to watch. It is all a learning curve for him now, but he learns quickly, said Botham in an interview at a Hardys wine-tasting event in London.Botham, however, forecast changes to Englands faltering top order.I think someone like Jos Buttler might come into the equation. Spinners, he can destroy them. They (England) are not going to do anything drastic. Maybe Buttler comes in for someone like Gary Ballance, perhaps? As the cricket-lovers among the wine-buffs at Londons Olympia exhibition centre posed for selfies with Botham, he recalled how a friendship with the late English cricket broadcaster John Arlott -- also a noted wine writer -- had broadened his horizons.John took me under his wing when I was about 16 or 17, said Botham, himself now 60. We got on very well and stayed friends. I helped carry the coffin at his funeral. He was a wonderful man.I was a boy from Somerset and we used to drink cider. He started my education in wine.We bought a house just down the road from him (in the Channel Island of Alderney). Now when I go to Alderney I always get a very good bottle of red, go down to his grave, take the cork out, toast him with a glass, and leave the cork on the grave.

Manchester City to take on Barcelona in Champions League clash tonight

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - AFP Sports looks ahead to Tuesdays Champions League action as Pep Guardiolas Manchester City host Barcelona with a number of sides, including the Spanish champions, looking to seal a place in the next round (all kick-offs 1945 GMT unless stated):Group ALudogorets Razgrad (BUL) v Arsenal (ENG)At Sofia, BulgariaMesut Ozil scored his first professional hat-trick in Arsenals 6-0 whitewash of Ludogorets last time out. With Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez both grabbing braces at the weekend and Theo Walcott on a purple vein of form, the Gunners should have way too much for the Bulgarian champions. Plucky in their 3-1 home defeat to PSG, Ludogorets took a point at Basel and scored 15 goals in qualifying. But even if Arsenal fail to win here, they will qualify for the next round if PSG win in Basel.Basel (SUI) v Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)At Basel, SwitzerlandUnai Emerys PSG are starting to understand what the Spaniard wants tactically and they boast up front the red-hot Edinson Cavani, the Uruguayan striker who scored his 10th league goal of the season in a 1-0 win at Lille on Friday, where Angel Di Maria and Lucas showed promising fluidity around the targetman. A victory in Basel assures PSG of qualification, but Basel are unbeaten at home this season.Group BBesiktas (TUR) v Napoli (ITA), kick-off 1745At IstanbulTurkish champions Besiktas will go top of Group B if they follow up their 3-2 away win over Italians Napoli with a home win over them at their new stadium, where they have won 13 of their past 14 league fixtures. Euro 2016 star Ricardo Quaresma continues to impress for Besiktas and his free-kick and Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakars brace brought their thrilling victory in Italy. For the visitors Spains Jose Callejon is the man to watch after he scored a seventh goal of the season in a 2-1 Italian league loss to Juventus on Saturday. Napoli can book a place in the next round if they win and Benfica draw with Dynamo Kyiv.Benfica (POR) v Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)At LisbonAfter a draw with Besiktas and a thumping at Napoli, Benfica got their campaign back on track with a 2-0 win at Dynamo in the last round of matches. The Portuguese champions and league leaders are on astonishing form, especially at their Stadium of Light stronghold. Knocked out narrowly in the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich last season, Benfica know a home win will place them nicely for another second-round spot. Kyiv got a confidence-boosting league win at the weekend but with a single point so far their Champions League survival depends on a result in Portugal for Serhiy Rebrovs men -- which looks a very tall order.Group CManchester City (ENG) v Barcelona (ESP)At ManchesterLionel Messi scored three as Pep Guardiolas return to Barcelona went belly up with a 4-0 defeat two weeks ago. On the bright side a six-match winless streak was snapped by a 4-0 league win over West Brom on Saturday as star striker Sergio Aguero scored twice. Barcelona only need a point to qualify for the next round but with Luis Suarez, Neymar and Messi about to be unleashed on the blue half of a Manchester side who have not lost at home for 12 games, this is Tuesdays must-watch game.Borussia Moenchengladbach (GER) v Celtic (SCO)At Moenchengladbach, GermanyLose here and Celtic are out, but the Scots -- led by their passionate Northern Irish coach Brendan Rodgers -- will be just as concerned to avoid anything like the 7-0 whipping they took at Barcelona in their last Champions League away game. The Germans beat Celtic 2-0 away and will be hoping Barcelona beat City in the other Group C game to steal a march on the Mancunians. Andre Schuberts men have gone four league games without a win. In contrast, Celtic are on a 13-game unbeaten run in Scotland and striker Moussa Dembele has nine league goals so far.Group DAtletico Madrid (ESP) v Rostov (RUS)At MadridWith a mean defence and a fearsome attack featuring French duo Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro, a draw with Russians Rostov could qualify impressive Atletico Madrid for the next round. A win will certainly do it. A solitary Yannick Carrasco goal gave Atletico a narrow win in Russia two weeks ago and Carrasco scored twice on Saturday as his team breezed past Malaga, Gameiro bagging two as well. Diego Simeones men are top of the group with three wins including a celebrated Bayern Munich scalp. Visiting Spain for the first time, Rostov have a single point from a 2-2 draw at PSV so far.PSV Eindhoven (NED) v Bayern Munich (GER)At Eindhoven, NetherlandsPSVs Champions League future depends on avoiding defeat here while Bayern can qualify with a win should Rostov lose in Madrid. Carlo Ancelottis side beat PSV 4-1 two weeks ago. Robert Lewandowski netted twice in a 3-1 win at Augsburg on Saturday while Dutch winger Arjen Robben was outstanding with two assists and a goal. Bayern are second in Group D, three points behind Atletico, who they host on December 6 having already lost 1-0 in Spain. Eindhoven are bottom of the table with one point from their three games.

Harry Reid says FBI director 'may have broken the law'

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Senates top Democrat blasted FBI chief James Comey Sunday for announcing a new review of Hillary Clintons emails just days before the presidential election, an action he says may have broken the law.Allegations Clinton put the United States at risk by using a private email server while secretary of state were thrust back into the spotlight Friday when Comey revealed a renewed FBI probe into the matter based on a previously unknown trove of emails. As soon as you came into possession of the slightest innuendo related to secretary Clinton, you rushed to publicize it in the most negative light possible, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement.Through your partisan actions, you may have broken the law, Reid said, alleging that Comey had violated the Hatch Act, which bars the FBI from influencing elections.Clinton has demanded the FBI director explain in detail why he had effectively reopened an inquiry declared complete in July, branding Comeys move deeply troubling so close to Election Day.According to US media, the probe was renewed after agents seized a laptop used by Clintons close aide, Huma Abedin, and her now estranged husband, Anthony Weiner. The disgraced former congressman who resigned in 2011 after sending explicit online messages is under investigation over allegations he sent sexual overtures to a 15-year-old girl. Both Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump have piled pressure on Comey to put his cards on the table and end speculation about the investigation before America goes to the polls on November 8.US networks reported Sunday that the FBI had obtained a warrant to search the emails. It formerly had a warrant only to search Weiners laptop for communication with the teenager.According to CNN, discovery of the emails occurred weeks ago although the FBI did not reveal the matter until Friday. While Clinton is still overwhelmingly expected to win the ballot, polls -- many of which were taken before the FBI email announcement -- showed the US election tightening Sunday. In the same memo, Reid also struck out at the FBI chief for sitting on explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors and the Russian government.I wrote to you months ago calling for this information to be released to the public, Reid said.

Djokovic rejuvenated by Murray top spot battle

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Novak Djokovic admitted Sunday that Andy Murrays dramatic last-gasp assault on his world number one ranking has rejuvenated a season which was limping into mediocrity for the 12-time major winner.Djokovic has suffered a worrying dip in form since winning his first French Open and completing the career Grand Slam in June.He had a shock early loss at Wimbledon followed by a first round exit at the Olympics and a runners-up spot at the US Open. But as the 29-year-old prepares to defend the Paris Masters title he has won for the past three years, he insists Murrays charge for the top has provided the fresh impetus he needs. It makes me want to go on court and fight for every point because there is something to win at the end, Djokovic said Sunday adding he felt rejuvenated and regenerated. If Djokovic reaches next Sundays final in Paris, he will retain his world number one ranking. But if he fails to make the championship match, then Murray will become the number one as long as the British star wins the title.Djokovic, who has admitted private issues contributed to his summer slump, believes Paris is the perfect place to revive his fortunes on his return to the French capital.Winning Roland Garros this year gave me a lot of joy but it required a lot of energy. I felt a little exhausted after and I was a little less motivated, said the Serb, who hasnt played since a semi-final defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Shanghai Masters.I took a little time to think about all these things, to find a new motivation and a new ambition. Its in place. I feel good. Im happy to come back here to Paris. I hope to have a good week.Djokovic has a bye in the first round at the Paris Masters before facing either Nicolas Almagro or Gilles Muller.

Balotelli scores again as Nice stretch lead

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Mario Balotelli starred once again as clinical Nice opened up a six-point gap at the top of Ligue 1 with a 4-1 thrashing of Nantes on Sunday. The maverick forward, back in form after nightmare spells at Liverpool and AC Milan, scored his sixth league goal of the season and was involved in two others as Nice took their unbeaten run since the start of the season to 11 matches.Wylan Cyprien scored a brace and Alassane Plea also netted while Emiliano Sala replied for the visitors at the Allianz Riviera, as Nice played with panache and incision. We deserved to win but we had some difficult moments, particularly early on, said Nice coach Lucien Favre.Nantes had two good chances and if they had scored at that time, things might have been different.Favre made light of Nices six-point championship lead over Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, adding of Balotelli: He had a full week of rest (after injury). But I say and repeat: there is still much work for him to do. Today he did some extra defensive work, which is positive. The league leaders were slow out of the blocks but soon began to take control of proceedings, with Balotelli, 26, at the heart of it as they opened the scoring. The Italy star ran on to Younes Belhandas chip over the top and although he was stopped in his tracks by desperate last-gasp defending, the ball broke to Cyprien to slot into the empty net on nine minutes.Nice were piling on the pressure and the Nantes backline cracked again as Balotelli ran onto a long ball from Jean Seri and calmly took a touch before placing the ball past Remy Riou and into the bottom corner.Nantes werent completely out of contention and Yacine Bammou should have done better than fire over from Lucas Limas cross 10 minutes before half-time.Nice kept coming, though, and Ricardo Pereiras goal-bound shot was blocked by defender Diego Carlos. But the hosts shot themselves in the foot at the start of the second period as Mathieu Bodmer tried to dribble the ball out of defence on the edge of his box.He was robbed by Sala, who stroked a sumptuous shot into the top corner on 47 minutes.Suddenly Nice were reeling and struggling to hold on against a rejuvenated Nantes, with Sala and Mariusz Stepinski spurning good chances. But the tide turned again on the hour mark as Plea rose ahead to head home Seris corner.Minutes later a sublime flick from Balotelli sent Pereira scampering towards goal and he pulled the ball back for Cyprien to drill home.Second-placed Monaco lost ground in the title race with a 1-1 draw at Saint-Etienne on Saturday.Kamil Glik put Monaco ahead after five minutes but the hosts pulled level just 13 minutes later through Loic Perrin.Champions Paris Saint-Germain are behind Monaco only on goal difference after winning 1-0 at Lille on Friday night thanks to a goal from Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani.Rudi Garcia is still looking for his first league win as Marseille coach after his side drew 0-0 with Bordeaux at the Stade Velodrome in his first home game.Marseille remain mired in mid-table in 10th.

Cricket: Ex-Australia spinner Brad Hogg considered suicide- book

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Former Australia Test spinner Brad Hogg has revealed in a new book that retirement and a marriage breakdown led him to contemplate ending his life. After seven Tests and being a key part of Australias 2003 and 2007 winning World Cups, Hogg said he had no other option than to initially retire from all forms of cricket in 2007-08 in a bid to save his marriage to former wife Andrea. In his autobiography, The Wrong Un, released on Monday, he details the depths he plummeted to in the next three years when, with the marriage over, he turned to alcohol and was unable to find contentment in an office job.I parked my car at (Fremantles) Port Beach and went for a walk, he writes.Id stare at the sea and think, I could swim out to that groyne (stone or concrete structure), and if I make it back, fine. If I dont make it back ... well, hard luck.I was prepared to let fate decide. I was in a really dark place. I did that drive four times. And each time I thought about doing something really drastic.Thinking and doing are two completely different things, thankfully. He bounced back and Hogg, one of crickets fun-loving characters, was an ever-present in Australias one-day side in the latter stages of his international career, taking 156 wickets and averaging 20.25 with the bat in 123 one-dayers.Last year he became the oldest player ever to feature in an Indian Premier League match at the age of 44 for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The quirky left-arm spinner, now 45, is still playing for the Melbourne Renegades in this seasons Big Bash League.

Tennis: Murray wins Vienna title to close on No.1 spot

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Andy Murray continued his march towards the world number one slot and ramped up the pressure on Novak Djokovic by winning the Vienna Open on Sunday. The 29-year-old Scot swept past Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) in the final to earn his seventh title of the year. The Olympic and Wimbledon champion can take over the world number one ranking from Djokovic if he wins next weeks Paris Masters and the Serb fails to reach the final. He can also take over top spot if he reaches the final and Djokovic loses before the semis in the French capital.Murray took his recent run to 15 straight victories, in which he has picked up the China Open and Shanghai Masters titles as well.He now has 42 career titles and a second in Vienna, after also winning in 2014.I think I played my best tennis of the tournament today, said Murray, who praised Tsongas fighting spirit in the second set.Jo fought well and started playing a lot better. He was more aggressive and taking some more chances and making the shots.Murray broke early in each set before his only blip allowed the Frenchman and sixth seed to break back and level at 4-4 in the second set.It was a 14th defeat in 16 meetings with Murray for Tsonga, whose run to the final did at least keep alive his slim hopes of reaching the season-ending World Tour Finals in London.Tsonga said he would be happy to see Murray take the world number spot in Paris next week -- on one condition.Next week you have a chance maybe to be the number one. I hope its going to be the case, except if I play against you in the final
