Football: US, Mexico, Canada in joint bid for 2026 World Cup

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The United States, Mexico and Canada announced a joint bid to stage the 2026 World Cup on Monday, aiming to become the first three-way co-hosts in the history of FIFAs showpiece tournament. The bid was announced at a press conference in New York attended by the head of CONCACAF, Victor Montagliani, along with US Soccer Federation chief Sunil Gulati and Mexico counterpart Decio de Maria.Announcing the bid, US chief Gulati said three quarters of the tournaments matches would be staged in the United States, with Canada and Mexico hosting 10 games each.Gulati also played down the possibility that the politics of US President Donald Trump could hamper the bid.We have the full support of the US government in this project, Gulati said. The president of the US is fully supportive... We are not at all concerned at some of the concerns that some people may raise, he added.Trump was elected last year after a campaign marked by rhetoric against Mexico, vowing to build a wall along the countrys southern border to keep out illegal immigrants. The joint bid will start as the heavy early favourite in the race, despite United States prosecutors leading the investigation into football corruption which rocked the sport in 2015 and led to the downfall of former FIFA supremo Sepp Blatter.Mondays announcement confirmed what has long been regarded as an open secret amongst FIFA-watchers: that a bid from the North America region for 2026 was inevitable. That sense of certainty hardened last year, when FIFAs council ruled that neither Europe nor Asia would be eligible to run for the 2026 tournament on the grounds that the regions are hosting the next two World Cups. Russia is hosting the 2018 finals, followed by Qatar in 2022.With Europe and Asia ineligible, CONCACAF could in theory face potential competition from the Africa, South America and Oceania regional confederations.US soccer officials had been publicly coy about the possibility of a future World Cup bid since the country lost out to Qatar in the battle for the 2022 tournament at a corruption-tarnished vote in Zurich in 2010.However the prospect of a fresh American bid gathered momentum in 2014 after the World Cup in Brazil. That campaign captured the imagination of US sports fans, with huge crowds attending public screenings of games at cities across the country. The countrys club game is also booming, with record average crowds of 21,692 attending Major League Soccer games in 2016.The United States also burnished its credentials as a major tournament host with last years 16-team Copa America Centenario, which culminated in Chiles victory over Argentina in front of 82,026 fans at the final in New York. The United States first hosted the World Cup in 1994, staging a commercially successful 24-team tournament that played out to packed stadia. The 1994 tournament remains the most attended World Cup in history, with just over 3.5 million fans flocking to its 52 games, an average of 68,991 per match.Mexico has hosted the World Cup twice before -- the 1970 finals won by a Pele-inspired Brazil and the 1986 tournament won by an Argentina team led by Diego Maradona.Canada, who have only made one World Cup appearance when they were eliminated in the first round of the 1986 finals, has never hosted the tournament. However Canada earned plaudits for its staging of the Womens World Cup in 2015, which was won by the United States in the final in Vancouver.A tournament in North America is also likely to be attractive to FIFA for solid public relations reasons. With dozens of modern, tournament-ready venues to choose from across the region, there is little risk of stadiums being left to rot as white elephants following the tournament, a problem which has embroiled grounds used at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Football: Wretched Arsenal hit new low as Palace run riot

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Arsene Wengers wretched season hit a new low as Arsenal crashed to a humiliating 3-0 defeat at lowly Crystal Palace that leaves their top four bid in tatters.Wenger has been under siege in recent weeks as angry Arsenal fans demanded his resignation and the calls for the Gunners boss to quit will grow even louder after one of the most chastening defeats of his 21-year reign.Needing a victory to keep pace with their rivals in the race for Champions League qualification, spineless Arsenal showed none of the required poise and passion as they crumbled on a woebegone Monday night in south London.Andros Townsend put Palace ahead in the first half and Yohan Cabaye doubled the hosts lead after the break.Luka Milivojevics penalty rubbed salt into Wengers wounds as he digested Arsenals fifth defeat in their last eight league games.Arsenal, beaten at Palace for the first time since 1979, were shambolic and their underachieving stars were barracked with chants of youre not fit to wear the shirt in the closing stages of their heaviest league defeat this season.Wengers retort to critics who claim hes past his best is to point at his record of leading Arsenal into the Champions League for the last 19 seasons. But that crutch looks increasingly flimsy after a defeat that leaves sixth placed Arsenal languishing seven points behind fourth placed Manchester City, although with one game in hand.It is increasingly difficult to see how Wenger, who has yet to sign a new contract, can prolong his reign as his team falls apart around him.Palace, now six points clear of the relegation zone, recently won at leaders Chelsea and it quickly became clear they were capable of another famous scalp.Harrying Arsenal out of possession, Sam Allardyces side carved out a good chance when Christian Benteke teed up Milivojevic for a powerful strike that flashed just wide from the edge of the area.Rattled by that early escape, Arsenal tried to respond as Mohamed Elnenys long-range effort was pushed away by Wayne Hennessey. But, with Laurent Koscielny again absent due to injury, Wengers defence were a bag of nerves and it was no surprise when Palace bullied their way into the lead in the 17th minute.Failing to deal with a routine high ball towards Benteke, Arsenal reacted too slowly as Townsend exchanged passes with Cabaye on the edge of the area.Cabaye found the unmarked Wilfried Zaha down the right and when he slipped a low cross towards Townsend, the Palace midfielder took advantage of more sloppy marking to lift a cool close-range finish over Emiliano Martinez.Wearing the anguished expression that has come to define a dismal season, Wenger was a picture of frustration and his mood was hardly improved when Alexis Sanchez shot tamely at Hennessey after advancing into a dangerous position. It might have been different if Mamadou Sakho had been punished with a penalty after appearing to block a Sanchez shot with his hand. But Wengers luck was out and Arsenals creaky defence was nearly breached again when a counter-attack ended with Benteke barging through for a shot that Martinez pushed away.Although they controlled possession, Arsenal did little with it, with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil alarmingly lethargic for long periods. When Hector Bellerin miscued wide at the far post, Wenger had seen enough and sent on Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey after an hour.It made no difference and seconds after the switch Cabaye plunged Arsenal deeper into the abyss.Townsend fed Zaha down the right and he whipped over a low cross that Cabaye met with a superb strike over Martinez and into the top corner. There was worse to come five minutes later.Martinez conceded a penalty with a foul on Townsend and Milivojevic slotted in the spot-kick to leave Wenger shell-shocked.

Pakistan, West Indies third ODI today

Posted:

PROVIDENCE (Agencies) - The third and final ODI between Pakistan and West Indies will be played at National Stadium in Providence today (Tuesday). The sides are all square after splitting the first two games.Following a commendable 74-run win in the second One-Day International (ODI), Pakistan have managed to keep the three-match series alive against West Indies. Pakistan’s win at Guyana on Sunday has set the stage for a thrilling final to decide who shall reign supreme. The series is currently levelled at 1-1 with both Pakistan and West Indies registering impressive victories. Pakistan suffered a setback early on in the series when West Indies clinched a come-from-behind victory by 4 wickets. However, Pakistan left no stones unturned to ensure they stay alive in the series, winning the next ODI by 74 runs despite a spirited fightback from Jason Holder and co.In the second game, Babar Azam scored his 5th ODI hundred — 4th against West Indies and finished on 125. He was supported by Imad Wasim, who struck an unbeaten 43 to allow Pakistan to finish at 282 for 5 in 50 overs.Hasan Ali claimed a 5-wicket haul to rattle the batting line-up of the hosts. On a batting-friendly wicket at the Providence Stadium, West Indies could manage a mere 5 wickets. Shannon Gabriel claimed 2 for 50. West Indies were meek in reply, as it was just a couple of batsmen — Holder and Ashley Nurse — who could provide some resistance. Holder fought hard right up till the end, and was the last man to fall to be dismissed for 68. Nurse, who was one of the heroes in West Indies’ historic win in the first game, also tried to provide some late fight back, but could not pull it off this time and fell for 44.Heading into the final game, Pakistan’s top-order batting is likely to remain the same, with Ahmed Shehzad and Kamran Akmal opening the innings, followed by Azam at No. 3. Although Shehzad failed to fire in the last tie, he was in a fine touch during the opening ODI, and will be expected to fire in the final match. The middle-order will comprise of Mohammad Hafeez, who has been in decent touch with both bat and the ball, followed by veteran Shoaib Malik, who too was among runs in the first ODI. Imad Wasim too should retain his position. For the West Indies, the top-order could witness a change. Among the openers, Evin Lewis retains his spot, while Chadwick Walton could face axe following his poor performance in both the ties. He could make way for Rovman Powell. Kieran Powell too retains his place in the playing XI; he scored a fifty in the first game. Shai Hope has to be in the XI, followed by Jason Mohammed, who was the match-winner during the first ODI. PAK vs WI 2017, 2nd ODI at Guyana: Azam’s 125, Hasan’s 5-38 and other highlightsJonathan Carter has been struggling with both bat and the ball, and could be removed from the equation, making way for Miguel Cummins. Holder would not mind adding another pacer will add more to his team’s firepower. The pitch has assisted bowlers in the series so far. In the bowling attack, a change is highly unlikely with Ashley Nurse, Devendra Bishoo, Alzarri Joseph and Shannon Gabriel retaining their spots. With the game once again being held in Guyana, the wicket is expected to carry something for both batsmen and bowlers, as seen in the two games before.

Dortmund hit with injury woes for Monaco clash

Posted:

DORTMUND (AFP) - Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel has personnel problems to resolve as they prepare to host free-scoring Monaco in Tuesdays Champions League quarter-final first leg.Its complicated. There are a lot of things we have to deal with, said Tuchel ahead of the clash at Dortmunds imposing Signal Iduna Park. The Dortmund boss has a mounting injury list and is rushing to get the likes of Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa, winger Andre Schuerrle, midfielder Julian Weigl and defender Lukasz Piszczek fit.The quartet all sat out Dortmunds 4-1 thumping at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday. There will be players coming back, we dont know in what condition they will be in, but we need them with strength, form and energy, added Tuchel. At least chief playmaker Marco Reus returned to training on Sunday after a month sidelined by a hamstring injury and could be an option.Even an appearance off the bench would boost the hosts chances in what is likely to be a high-tempo clash between two teams who like to attack.Marco trained yesterday and Im a fan of taking him along and possibly using him. Well decide just before kick-off, Tuchel told reporters on Monday.Monaco fully deserve their last-eight berth having seen off Pep Guardiolas Manchester City with a stunning 3-1 second-leg win at home to progress on away goals after losing 5-3 in England. The French league leaders -- who score on average nearly three goals a game in Ligue 1 -- have problems of their own with right-back Djibril Sidibe set to miss out after being hospitalised with appendicitis over the weekend.Highly rated defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is suspended, meaning Joao Moutinho should start in central midfield.Aubameyang revenge missionDespite their injury woes Dortmund are confident of beating Monaco over two legs to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in four years, when they lost the 2013 final to Bayern Munich in London. We will try to play to our strengths and in all discussions it will be about being as brave as possible, added Tuchel. Its what makes us strong and we will try to score as many goals as possible. If we have the ball, we will attack. It is an advantage that we are at home for the first game because we can go on the offensive.Dortmund have lost just one of their last 12 home games in Europe and can expect passionate support at Signal Iduna Park. The atmosphere here is the stadium is fantastic. The fans will put a lot of pressure on Monaco, which wont be the case for us in the return leg, said Dortmund midfielder Raphael Guerreiro.Dortmund top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has hit seven Champions League goals this season in a haul of 32 in all competitions, will be looking to remind Monaco what they missed out on.The French side allowed the Gabon striker to slip through their grasp during a loan spell in 2010/11.Monaco are enjoying a stellar season and their free-flowing attack has so far netted more than 130 goals in all competitions. The only blip was their 4-1 mauling by Paris Saint-Germain in the French League Cup final at the start of April.Monaco squeezed past Angers on Saturday with a 1-0 win as Radamel Falcao scored his 25th goal of the season. He is set to partner rising star Kylian Mbappe, 18, up front.Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim is concerned about the short turnaround in a busy -- and pivotal -- month for his exciting, young side.Against Dortmund the problem will not be possession, it will be having only two days to recover before we play in an international competition, he said.

Mosul zoo lion and bear flown out of Iraq
