Voges in the runs as champions Middlesex start with draw

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former Australia batsman Adam Voges made 92 as Middlesex launched the defence of their English County Championship title with a hard-fought draw away to Hampshire on Monday.Voges, the oldest player to make a hundred on Test debut when he scored 130 against the West Indies as a 35-year-old in 2015, called time on his international career this year. And last month saw the now 37-year-old West Australian announce his retirement from Australian domestic first-class cricket. But he could still play a key role as Lords-based Middlesex look to retain the First Division title.Middlesex were 111 for four overnight, a lead of just 29 runs, and in danger of suffering a last-day defeat against a Hampshire side who opened their Championship campaign with a surprise win away to Yorkshire.Voges, 29 not out overnight at Southampton, was in sight of what would have been his 33rd first-class century when, just three deliveries after Hampshire took the new ball, he was caught behind off former South Africa fast bowler Kyle Abbott.Voges, whose Test average of 68.87 is second only to Donald Bradman, arguably crickets greatest batsman, among players who have featured in at least 20 Tests, batted for nearly four hours, facing 196 balls including 19 fours. His exit was the start of a three-wicket collapse that left Middlesex struggling at 215 for seven. But the tail wagged and a draw was agreed with Middlesex on 278 for nine declared in their second innings.Abbott maintained his fine start to the season by taking five for 59.At The Oval, Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkaras century helped Surrey to a draw with Lancashire that saw the hosts go top of the table.Scott Borthwick (108 not out) and fellow left-hander Sangakkara (136) put on 256 for the third wicket.Dropped at slip on 72, Sangakkara was eventually out when bowled round his legs by former England left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan.Elsewhere, England leg-spinner Adil Rashid took the one wicket Yorkshire needed to secured an innings and 88-run win away to Warwickshire at Edgbaston.In-form Yorkshire paceman Ben Coad took five wickets in each innings for a match haul of 10 for 102.In the Second Division, there was a foretaste of a potential Ashes battle to come as Nottinghamshire beat Durham by nine wickets at Chester-le-Street.England opener Keaton Jennings carried his bat for an unbeaten 102 in Durhams second innings 250 against a Nottinghamshire attack led by Australia fast bowler James Pattinson. The duo could be in opposition when England defend the Ashes in Australia later this year and personal honours from this match were about even after Pattinson bowled Jennings for 28 in Durhams meagre first-innings 162.Defeat left Durham on minus 45 points after they were hit with a 48-point penalty and demoted to the second tier last season after receiving a financial bail-out from the England and Wales Cricket Board. In a round of matches where several batsmen were dismissed within sight of hundreds, former South Africa Twenty20 international Richard Levi (99) and Rob Newton (98) helped Northamptonshire chase down a target of 326 in 65 overs to beat Derbyshire by three wickets.Meanwhile veteran Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens starred with both bat and ball in a 226-run win away to Sussex at Hove. The 40-year-old, whod already made two fifties, took five for 51 as Sussex were dismissed for 200 on Monday.

Erdogan tells OSCE to 'know your place' after vote criticism

ANKARA: (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday told international monitors to know your place after they suggested the landmark referendum giving him extra powers fell short of international standards.Know your place first, Erdogan told the monitors in an address to supporters outside his vast presidential palace in Ankara. We neither see, hear, nor know those politically motivated reports that you will draft, he said after the report by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) monitors. We will continue down our road, he said. This country held the most democratic elections that have never been seen in any other country in the West. The president also warned the international monitors not to join a race of casting shadows over the elections, adding: You cannot achieve any result.Turkey voted on Sunday in a referendum on granting Erdogan strengthened powers that was won by the Yes camp but disputed by the opposition. The referendum took place on an unlevel playing field and the two sides of the campaign did not have equal opportunities, said Cezar Florin Preda of PACE.The groups preliminary conclusions were also blasted by the Turkish foreign ministry as biased and prejudiced.

North Korea says will respond to 'nuclear strike' from US

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS, United States (AFP) - North Korea is preparing for any mode of war triggered by US military action, Pyongyangs envoy to the United Nations warned Monday, saying his country would respond to a missile or nuclear strike in kind. The statement from North Koreas deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Kim In Ryong, followed warnings from US Vice President Mike Pence to Pyongyang not to test US resolve. If the United States dares opt for a military action (...) the DPRK is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the Americans, Kim told a news conference at UN headquarters in New York.We will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs, he said.North Korea has taken self-defensive measures in response to US threats of military action and these reflect Pyongyangs determination to counter nukes and ICBM in kind, Kim said, referring to intercontinental ballistic missiles.Pence earlier told a news conference in South Korea that the era of strategic patience is over after North Korea on Sunday test-fired another missile and fears mounted that it may be preparing a sixth nuclear test.Pyongyang is seeking to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them last year.Kim also confirmed that a new nuclear test was under preparation, saying that the plans had been announced and that it will take place. As far as nuclear test is concerned, it was already announced to the public. It is something that our headquarters decided. At a time and at the place where our headquarters deem necessary, it will take place, he said.Got to behaveUS President Donald Trumps decision at the weekend to send the Carl Vinson carrier-led navy strike group to the Korean peninsula shows that the US reckless moves for invading the DPRK have reached a serious phase, said Kim.The North Korean deputy envoy asserted that Pyongyang would hold the United States wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions. The envoy criticized the US missile strikes that hit an air base in Syria last week, saying Washington was resorting to a gangster-like logic that its military action was proportionate and could apply to the Korean peninsula as well.Trump on Monday said his message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was: Got to behave.UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric separately expressed concern over rising tensions on the Korean peninsula and said the latest missile test was troubling. He urged North Korea to take all the steps necessary to de-escalate the situation and return to dialogue on denuclearization.US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will next week chair a special meeting of the UN Security Council on North Korea.

Saudi seeks 10% renewable energy in six years: minister

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi Arabia wants 10 percent of its electricity to come from renewable sources within six years as part of a transformation in its power sector, the energy minister said Monday.Khaled al-Falih said his country, the worlds biggest oil exporter, will also sell renewable energy and its technology abroad. At a forum seeking investment in the sector, he announced 30 projects to be implemented in order to reach a goal of about 10 gigawatts of renewable energy production early next decade.Virtually all of the kingdoms domestic power currently comes from crude, refined oil or natural gas.But as part of an economic reform plan to wean the kingdom off oil, the government has embarked on what Falih called an ambitious renewables programme featuring solar and wind power. He has said the projects could cost between $30 billion and $50 billion. The percentage of renewable energy by 2023 will represent 10 percent of the total electricity of the kingdom, he said at the start of the Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Investment Forum. We are seeking for the kingdom, in the medium term, to become a nation that develops, manufactures and exports the advanced technologies of renewable energy production, he said. This is really transformational, he said, suggesting that the changes coming to the kingdoms energy sector will be as significant as the discovery of oil in the 1930s.Youre really talking about a significant socio-economic transition thats going to take place over the next decade or two.Falih said the energy sector is being completely restructured to include an autonomous board of regulators, and with privatised generation capacity. He formally opened bids on the first 300-megawatt solar plant under the renewables plan. The government has shortlisted 51 firms, most of them from abroad, for bidding on that plant and a 400-megawatt wind farm.Another wind project will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, followed by more solar projects, he told hundreds of delegates.Government estimates say Saudi peak energy demand is expected to exceed 120 gigawatts by 2032.

Manhunt in five US states for Facebook killer

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - US police on Monday widened a manhunt for a gunman who shot and killed an elderly man, and then posted a video of the seemingly random Easter Sunday attack on Facebook.Police in Cleveland, Ohio said they believe the suspect, 37-year-old Steve Stephens, is armed and dangerous, and have alerted authorities in four neighboring states to be on the lookout for him.Robert Godwin Sr, 74, was shot and killed on Sunday, apparently at random as he walked home after an Easter dinner, police and local media reported. We know that Steve is still out there someplace, said Cleveland police chief Calvin Williams. We dont know his condition and, of course, right now we dont know his location. Were asking the public to remain vigilant.Police issued an arrest warrant for aggravated homicide against Stephens, described as a six-foot one-inch, 244-pound (1.85 m, 110-kilo) black man with a full beard who was last seen in a white Ford Fusion with temporary license plates. In a video uploaded to Stephenss Facebook page, a man resembling him is seen exiting a vehicle and approaching his victim, who is shown with a gun to his head and then falling to the ground after a shot is fired.I killed 13, so Im working on 14 as we speak, the suspect says in a second video clip. Im just driving around hitting motherfuckers, man. I just snapped man, fuck.Police said they have not verified his claim to have committed other murders.Facebook subsequently took down the videos.Mad with his girlfriendThis is a horrific crime and we do not allow this kind of content on Facebook, the company said in a statement. We work hard to keep a safe environment on Facebook, and are in touch with law enforcement in emergencies when there are direct threats to physical safety.Stephenss mother told CNN she called him on Sunday after learning about the video and he told her he was shooting people because he was mad with his girlfriend.Police said the woman he referred to was in a safe place.Cleveland detectives also made contact with Stephens by phone early in the investigation, Williams said. They tried to, of course, convince him to turn himself in and, of course, that hasnt happened to date so again, were asking the publics help in finding this guy. We know hes out there someplace, he said. The last ping from Stephenss cellphone was from Erie, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Cleveland.Cleveland police have asked the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana and Michigan to be on alert.Dozens of searchesThe Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Marshals Service have joined the hunt. This man is dangerous and he could be nearby, he could be far away, anywhere in between, said Stephen Anthony, the FBI special agent in charge. Were going to make this individuals world very, very, very small, so Im very optimistic, said Peter Elliot, the marshal on the case. I think things are going to happen, and I believe things are going to happen pretty quickly. But Williams said police had searched dozens of locations overnight to no avail. If theres somebody who is helping Steve or think youre helping Steve, youre really not. Youre going to get yourself in trouble, along with him, he warned.Stephens worked for Beech Brook, a behavioral health agency serving children through mental health services, foster care and adoption, at-risk youth and other programs. In his video, Stephens displayed his Beech Brook badge. We are shocked and horrified like everyone else, Nancy Kortemeyer, a spokeswoman for the facility told CNN. To think that one of our employees could do this is awful.

Japan volcanic island may hold key to coral survival

Posted:

ABOARD THE SCHOONER TARA, Japan (AFP) - The key to the survival of the worlds threatened coral reefs may lie in the waters surrounding a small volcanic island off the coast of Japan, scientists say.The seabed of Shikine island is a living laboratory for researchers aboard the schooner Tara, a French-led scientific expedition, who are looking for clues to help protect coral from the damaging effects of climate change. While coral reefs cover less than 0.2 percent of the ocean surface globally, they host some 30 percent of marine animal and plant species, serving as a source of food and offering protection from predators.Losing these reefs would be horrifying, said Sylvain Agostini, an expedition coordinator and professor at Japans University of Tsukuba.Shikines unique conditions -- created by underwater volcanoes that flood some of its coves with CO2 and make it less alkaline -- mimic what scientists say will be the impact of unchecked carbon emissions on the worlds oceans by 2100.The build-up of CO2 due to greenhouse gas emissions or underwater volcanic activity raises the temperature and transforms the chemistry of ocean waters, in a process known as acidification.Researchers say the waters in parts of Shikine, located 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of Tokyo, offer a glimpse of how marine life -- including corals -- can fare in less alkaline water.Japans corals, the northernmost in the world, could offer important data to bolster knowledge about marine life, as Australias Great Barrier Reef faces a threat to its survival.Last week, scientists said the famous reef was at serious risk from bleaching -- a process in which stressed corals expel the algae that live in their tissue and provide them with food -- due to warming sea temperatures. They warned that coral bleached for two consecutive years at the World Heritage-listed site had zero prospect of recovery after researchers detected another round of mass bleaching after an earlier event in 2016.Very troublingIve been studying corals for 20 years and what Im seeing is a large-scale decline, Maggy Nugues, a senior lecturer at the prestigious French research institute Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, told AFP aboard the ship, which departed France in May 2016.There is a 50 percent to 80 percent reduction in coral cover in the Caribbean and the Pacific -- this is very troubling.Half a dozen researchers on the vessel want to see how an underwater ecosystem, including corals, plankton, seaweed and fish, fares in Shikines seemingly inhospitable environment.Early comparisons with another bay on Shikine that boasts vastly different conditions suggest corals do much better in more alkaline water. Were hoping that these higher latitude zones can serve as a refuge, Agostini said. But the question remains about the acidification of the oceans and its here, in Shikine, in these natural laboratories that we hope to find the answer, he added.Built in 1989, the 36-metre (120-foot) long ship has gained fame for previous scientific expeditions, including a 500-day trip in the Arctic, and in 2001 when its former owner, New Zealand skipper Peter Blake, was shot dead on board by pirates in the Amazon. The current two-year expedition will head to Australia and New Zealand before hitting Indonesia and the Philippines.Nugues warned that the speed of climate change, fuelled by human activity, was making it tough for animals to adapt. The planet has evolved under relatively stable conditions, letting organisms and animals adapt, she said. But here were speeding things up, maybe faster than natures clock.
