Ten migrants die, 100 missing off Libya

Posted:

GARABULLI (AFP) - At least ten migrants have died after their Europe-bound boats sank off Libyas coast and some 100 people are missing, coastguard officials and aid groups said Saturday.Eight bodies were found on an inflatable craft that can carry up to 120 passengers, said Colonel Fathi al-Rayani, head of the coastguard in Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli. He estimated that at least 100 migrants were missing. The boat was spotted deflated off Garabulli, and the coastguard found the bodies inside, said an AFP reporter who accompanied them. The Italian coastguard meanwhile said it had coordinated the rescue of 1,650 migrants off the Libyan coast, with aid groups involved in the operations saying two dead bodies were found on a dinghy.Conflict-ravaged Libya has long been a stepping stone for migrants seeking a better life in Europe. The UN refugee agency has said around 61,250 migrants have reached Italy since the start of the year after crossing the Mediterranean, while nearly 1,800 more are dead or missing. The Italian coastguard has said that more than 900 migrants were rescued off Libya on Thursday and Friday.Libyan navy spokesman General Ayoub Qassem meanwhile told AFP that coastguards patrolling off Zawiya, west of Tripoli, on Friday intercepted five inflatables and two wooden boats with more than 570 migrants on board. He said the boats were being escorted by five Libyans on a jet ski and two outboards, and that three of the men were apprehended. The migrants are Africans, Bangladeshis, Egyptians, Moroccans... and were delivered to the detention centre in Zawiya, Qassem said.Intercepted or rescued migrants are often held in detention centres before being repatriated.People traffickers have exploited the chaos in Libya since the 2011 uprising deposed and killed strongman Moamer Kadhafi to boost their lucrative but deadly trade.

Three US soldiers killed in Afghan 'insider attack'

JALALABAD (AFP) - Three US troops were killed and another wounded during a joint operation in Afghanistans eastern Nangarhar province Saturday, the Pentagon said, in the latest so-called insider attack on international forces. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the deaths in the volatile district of Achin, which is also contested by Islamic State jihadists, saying it was carried out by an infiltrator. The Pentagon said in a statement that the wounded soldier had been evacuated for medical treatment. This incident is under investigation, the statement added.Earlier, provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told AFP that an Afghan commando had opened fire on US troops and was killed in return fire.Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed on Twitter that four US soldiers were killed in the attack. The insurgents are known to exaggerate battlefield claims. In April, the US military dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb ever used in combat on a complex of caves in Achin used by IS fighters. The deployment of the so-called Mother of All Bombs killed dozens of jihadists but fighting in the area has continued.American troops have partnered with Afghan soldiers in raids against IS Khorasan, claiming the local offshoot of the jihadist group based in Iraq and Syria is steadily losing ground in Afghanistan.So-called green-on-blue attacks -- when Afghan soldiers or police turn their guns on international troops -- have been a major problem during NATOs long years fighting alongside Afghan forces.

Tennis: Injured Sharapova out of Wimbledon

LONDON (AFP) - Maria Sharapova withdrew from Wimbledon on Saturday after failing to recover from a thigh injury, dealing another blow to the superstars bid to rebuild her career after serving a doping ban.The 30-year-old Russian, who was champion at the All England Club in 2004, was due to play in the qualifying event in the hope of making the main draw. After an additional scan, the muscle tear that I sustained in Rome will unfortunately not allow me to compete in the grass court tournaments I was scheduled to play, she said in a statement.I will continue to work on my recovery and my next scheduled tournament is in Stanford from July 31.The former world number one returned from a 15-month doping ban in April but has relied on wildcards to get into tournaments because her world ranking points expired while she was banned. At the moment the five-time Grand Slam title winner is ranked at 178.She was initially banned for two years for using meldonium, with the penalty later reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled she was not an intentional doper. After her ban expired, Sharapova returned to competition in April at the Stuttgart Open, reaching the semi-finals, and progressed to the last 32 of the Madrid Open. She failed to earn a qualifying spot for the French Open and was then denied a wild card into the main draw by Roland Garros organisers despite being a two-time champion. She was also controversially handed a wildcard for the WTA grasscourt event in Birmingham later this month, a key warm-up for Wimbledon. But the injury she suffered in the Rome claycourt event in May has scuppered her plans, leaving her to probably hope for a wild card into the US Open, the seasons final Grand Slam event. She was champion in New York in 2006.I want to thank the LTA (Britains Lawn Tennis Association) for their amazing support on my return and providing me with a Birmingham wild card, a tournament which I hope many of you will be able to attend, Sharapova added in her statement.I look forward to meeting you there next year

Troops deployment in Qatar to ensure defence: Turkey

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkeys decision to station troops at a base in Qatar aims to ensure the emirates security after Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed a blockade over claims it supports terrorism, the foreign minister said Saturday. This accord is not targeting any Gulf country, Mevlut Cavusoglu said after meeting with his Bahraini counterpart Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa.The purpose of the troop deployment is to help foster security and stability across the Gulf, Cavusoglu said after talks attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said he wanted all parties to end the standoff before the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, around June 25.Bahrain joined Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and other states this past week in cutting ties with Qatar over what they say is the emirates financing of extremist groups and its ties to Iran, Saudi Arabias regional arch-rival.The Arab countries closed air, sea and land links with Qatar, barred the emirates planes from their airspace and ordered Qatari citizens out within 14 days. The crisis escalated on Friday after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain released a list of 59 Qatari and Doha-based people and entities linked to terrorism.Erdogan has vowed to support Qatar, a close ally, in the dispute, even though he also wants to maintain good relations with the other Gulf states. So far, Turkey has not directly criticised Riyadh.Turkey will continue with its constructive actions aimed at resolving this problem. We consider the stability and security of the Gulf in the same way we consider our own stability and security, Cavusoglu said.

MONTREAL (AFP) - World championship leader Sebastian Vettel topped the times ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen in Saturday mornings third and final free practice session ahead of Sundays Canadian Grand Prix. The four-time champion German dominated the hour-long session and clocked his best time in one minute and 12.572 seconds with 22 minutes remaining. That lap lifted him 0.292 seconds clear of the Finn who was, in turn, less than a tenth ahead of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Dutch teenager Max Verstappen, who was fourth in the leading Red Bull.Hamiltons Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was fifth quickest ahead of German Nico Hulkenberg of Renault, Brazilian Felipe Massa of Williams and Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who was down in eighth in the second Red Bull.On a blue-skied day at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Ferraris performance encouraged belief that they could claim their first consecutive pole positions since 2012 when qualifying takes place later Saturday. It was the fifth time in six Grands Prix that Ferrari have topped the times in third practice, but Mercedes much-improved showing following their desultory form at the Monaco Grand Prix suggested they could mount a serious challenge in the grid session. The impressive improved Frenchman Esteban Ocon of Force India was ninth ahead of Spaniard Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso.
