LONDON (AFP) - Police said a major incident was underway in central London as they responded to reports Saturday of a vehicle ploughing into pedestrians on London Bridge, and stabbings and shots being fired nearby. From 2208 hours (2108 GMT) officers responded to reports of a vehicle in collision with pedestrians on London Bridge, police said in a statement. AcciaItalia Consortium Improves Bid For Ilva: Reports

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - AcciaItalia, a consortium built around the Indian company Jindal South West Steel, has improved its offer to take over Italys giant but struggling Ilva steel producer, media reports said Saturday.Nationalised and under special administration, Ilvas main facility at Taranto is notorious as one of the most polluting industrial facilities in Europe but also an economic lifeline in a region with high unemployment. But any new deal is likely to mean cuts among the 14,200-strong workforce. The AcciaItalia consortium includes specialist steel maker Arvedi, the Italian states CDP investment bank, and Delfin, the holding group of businessman and Luxottica chairman Leonardo Del Vecchio. Its new proposal to the Italian government late Friday was a raised purchase price of 1.85 billion euros ($2.087-billion), a commitment to immediately employ 9,800 workers, and invest 3.1 billion euros, the Italian media reports said. The original bid had envisaged a headcount of 7,800 by next year, rising to 10,300 by 2023, which Union boss Maurizio Landini said was unacceptable.Italys Minister for Economic Development Carlo Calenda has said a decision will be taken soon.A second bidder, global steel giant ArcelorMittals partnership with Italys Marcegaglia, wants to cut staff to 8,400 by 2023, according to union officials. However it has promised to invest 2.3 billion euros in Ilva in addition to a reported purchase price of almost two billion euros.Ilva was nationalised and placed under special administration in 2015 after the Riva family, which owned it, was accused of failing to prevent toxic emissions from its Taranto site, in southern Italy. The government quickly opened a tender for the steelworks which used to produce a third of the nations output.

Colombia police say closing in on top drug gang boss

Posted:

APARTADO (AFP) - Police are using Black Hawk helicopters to scour the green banana fields of northern Colombia in a newly intensified search for the countrys most-wanted drug boss. With peace initiatives under way between the government and rebel groups, authorities are fighting on another front to stabilize the country after decades of violence: the gangs that make Colombia the worlds biggest source of cocaine.Their top target is Dairo Antonio Usuga, alias Otoniel, leader of the countrys biggest drug gang, the Gulf Clan.We have him within striking distance, says Jose Angel Mendoza, head of the anti-narcotics police division. He has had to run for it at the last second, more than once.- US reward offered -=====================The general spoke to AFP following search operations in the town of Apartado, where the force formally launched a major search operation on Thursday. He gave out leaflets this week offering rewards for information about Usuga and his gang, and dropped stacks of them from a helicopter over the town. The US State Department has offered a $5.0 million reward for Usugas capture on a 2009 indictment by a New York court. In its profile of Usuga it calls his gang a heavily armed, extremely violent criminal organization comprised of former members of terrorist organizations. It says the organization uses violence and intimidation to control the narcotics trafficking routes, cocaine processing laboratories, speedboat departure points and clandestine landing strips.- Paramilitary to drug lord -=============================Usuga, 45, commands a force born from the remnants of an outlawed right-wing paramilitary group which fought rebels during the countrys half-century civil conflict. The paramilitaries were officially disbanded in 2006, but authorities say their members are still making money from drugs and violence.Fighting between the government and Colombias biggest rebel group, the left-wing FARC, has ended and the force is disarming under a peace deal. But an accord still has not been struck with the last remaining rebel group, the leftist ELN. It is fighting the former paramilitaries for control of drug routes, officials say.The Gulf Clan accounts for some 70 percent of Colombias cocaine production, police say.The country produced 646 tonnes of the drug in 2015, according to the latest UN figures.- Rule of fear -================Usuga has made the northwestern Antioquia region his stronghold. He became leader by inspiring fear, and it is out of fear that he is respected, said Mendoza. But now, he said, the police are close to tracking Usuga down even in this remote region.Usuga uses messengers to communicate and changes location every three hours.Police and the military have deployed 1,000 officers to hunt him, a police source said.Police say they have killed 52 of the gangs leaders this year, arrested more than 1,300 of its members and seized 90 tonnes of cocaine. What has most impeded the Gulf Clan is that its leaders are living in isolation so the security forces dont find them easily, Mendoza said. They have difficulty keeping in touch with their henchmen. The leadership is broken.

India captain Kohli leads a powerful batting line-up: Afridi

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Title-holders India will look to put an off-field row behind them when they face arch-rivals Pakistan in their ICC Champions Trophy 2017 opener at Edgbaston on Sunday.Pakistan former skipper Shahid Afridi said Virat Kohli is the backbone of Indian team. The build-up to what is arguably crickets most anticipated fixture has been dominated by reports of a falling out between India captain Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble.Former India leg-spinner Kumble has overseen five Test series wins since his appointment in June last year. His contract expires after the end of the Champions Trophy but many have questioned the wisdom of the Board of Control for Cricket in Indias decision to advertise Kumbles job a week before the one-day international tournament starts.Ramachandra Guha, who quit a Supreme Court-appointed four-member committee overseeing the BCCI in protest, said in his letter of resignation: If indeed the captain and the head coach were not getting along, why was this not attended to as soon as the Australia series was over in late March?.Why was it left until the last minute, when a major international tournament was imminent? There were fears India may not even get the chance to defend the title they won at Edgbaston four years by beating hosts England in a thrilling final reduced by rain to 20 overs per side, after the BCCI hinted at a boycott of the 50-over tournament as a result of a revenue-sharing dispute with the International Cricket Council (ICC).But Kohli, one of the most driven players now in world cricket, said as his squad left for England: The hunger to win and ruthlessness is what we speak about all the time. The India captain leads a powerful batting line-up, with Shahid Afridi, in a column for www.icc-cricket.com, writing: While Kohli is the backbone, India possesses considerable firepower around him. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni are all match-winners.Afridi also noted the balance in a bowling attack which is set to include seamers by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami as well as the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.Nothing to loseBut Pakistan are not without hope and boast proven performers in the likes of skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, an excellent wicket-keeper/batsman, was well as a big-hitting rookie in Faheem Ashraf. We have nothing to lose, we just want to play our natural game, Sarfraz said last week.We are very hopeful of playing well in this tournament and we want to win it.Yet for all that players on both sides have tried to label Sundays clash as just another game, the fact is someone always has something to lose in an India-Pakistan match, a fixture that commands the attention of billions round the world let alone in the two cricket crazy sub-continent.Political rivalry means the two sides have not played a bilateral series since 2012-2013, and India have refused to consider the idea without an end to cross border terrorism -- code for militant incursions along the disputed Kashmir border.India have never lost a 50-over World Cup or Twenty20 showdown against Pakistan, and a win on Sunday would put them in good stead in a tough group also including Sri Lanka and South Africa. But Pakistan have won two of their three Champions Trophy showdowns against India.

Impression of rulers' repeated accountability false: Imran Khan

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan affirmed Saturday the impression of rulers’ repeated accountability is inaccurate. He said only a mafia can threaten judiciary, adding that these leaders are not democratic people. He maintained the whole nation is eyeing on Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for Panama case and hoping for the verdict against Sharif family.PTI Chief arrived at Lahore airport where he held a brief media talk. He reaffirmed that it was the first time Sharif family became accountable for its irregularities, adding that it would be wrong to say they have always been held accountable. While criticising the ruling party of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), he accused them on threatening the judiciary like a mafia. Imran Khan announced to hit the roads if Prime Minister ran away to Jeddah to escape from accountability. He also shared the party opinion on Nehal Hashmi’s threatening speech against senior judges and JIT members. Imran Khan alleged PML-N of making party members threaten people and then resign afterwards. “Everyone knows the Qatari letter is invalid. They opened six cases against me in order to make a settlement,” he claimed. On money laundering, PTI Chairman said it was destroying the country. He claimed Rs 10 billion is transferred to foreign countries every year. “Every single kid has to pay the debt because of money laundering,” he added.

Objections of Hussain Nawaz on JIT members are premature: SC

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court declared the objections on JIT members premature in its written order on Saturday. It stated that the objections, made by premier’s son Hussain Nawaz on two members of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for Panama case, were not worth consideration while declaring it a premature condition. The apex court believes the investigation cannot be called partial on the basis of the relatives of Bilal Rusool, JIT member from the Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). The political affiliations of Bilal Rasool’s relatives were insufficient to raise concern on the impartiality of the JIT, according to Supreme Court ruling.Similarly, it was said Hussain Nawaz’s objection on Amir Aziz, JIT member from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), is not worth consideration. Supreme Court said the investigation officers will not be replaced on such allegations, adding that the society was filled with such relatives. In the written order, the apex court assured to take action if partial behaviour from any JIT member was observed. Supreme Court asked the JIT to consider human dignity.Related:Will keep on presenting ourselves until truth comes out: Hussain Nawaz

Later on, it was Gunaratne who conceded 5 runs in his over while the introduction of Malinga also brought some pressure as only 9 runs came of the last three overs till fortieth over.South Africa were 221 for the loss of three wickets after 40 overs with Hashim Amla batting on 96 and Miller on 17 not out.No ABD show today at The Oval Hes dismissed on 4, caught off Seekkuge Prasanna https://t.co/icRVyILB1D SAvSL CT17— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) June 3, 2017 Overs 35, Score 198/1In the thirty first over, it was du Plessis who drills the ball through to the gap at extra cover for four more. South Africa seemed to be in a comfortable position when the excitement was tarnished by the dismissal of F du Plessis who was caught brilliantly by Chandimal of the bowling of Pradeep.F du Plessis departed after scoring 75 runs as South Africa were 190 for the loss of two wickets at the end of 34th over. The introduction AB de Villiers at this stage of the game means there will be some fireworks at the end of the innings. The fervor and craze of the spectators upon AB’s arrival was short lived as he was caught by Kapugedera of the bowling of Prasanna after scoring just four runs.A total of eight runs were scored of 35th over as South Africa were 198 for the loss of one wicket after 35 overs.Overs 30, Score 163/1Amla in order to speed things up drove off the back foot in the 22nd over as the ball races away towards the square leg boundary for four more.Amla yet again took the charge in Malinga’s over as he clipped the ball away to his left for a boundary.South Africa look very very strong to me .... Of all the teams they have the best all round unit ... ChampionsTrophy2017— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) June 3, 2017 South Africa were 114 for the loss of one wicket after 23 overs.Prasanna got some punishment in the 24th over as first it was du Plessis who thumped him away for a boundary and later on later on by Amla for a maximum as 11 runs came of his over.In the twenty sixth over, it was du Plessis who took the charge in the twenty seventh over as pulled it powerfully in front of square for four more. Both these batsmen were putting bad deliveries for four while at the same time rotating the strike at regular intervals. At the end of thirtieth over, the average 5.43 per over as South Africa had a great chance to put a decent total in the board as they had 9 wickets in hand with du Plessis and the consistent Amla on the crease.Overs 20, Score 90/1In the eleventh over, Q de Kock played brilliantly an over pitch from Pradep to the fence for four more as South Africa were 39 for no loss after 11 overs. The skipper brought in Gunaratne to the attack who also bowled rather good as South Africa were 44 for no loss at the end of twelfth over.In the 13th over, South Africa lost their first wicket in the shape of Q de Kock who was caught behind by Dickwella of the bowling of Pradeep after scoring rather a slow innings of 23 runs.South Africa were 45 for the loss of one wicket after 13 overs.Fifty came up for South Africa in the 14th over as they were 51 for no loss at the end of this over.Amla was batting slow may be because of the pitch and so was F du Plessis as South Africa run rate at the end of 15th over was just 3.66.It was in the seventh over when F du Plessis after being dropped by Malinga guided the bowl to the boundary for four more as eight runs came of the over.Amla took the charge in the 19th over as thumped Gunaratne for a huge six over leg stump. A good over for South Africa as 11 runs came of it.Both these batsmen had decided to reschedule the innings as F du Plessis swept really well of the bowling of Prasanna and resulting in nine runsbeing conceded of the twentieth over.South Africa were 90 for the loss of one wicket after 20 overs.Overs 10, Score 32/0Malinga took the new ball as Hashim Amla and Q de Kock started the proceedings for South Africa. Malinga as usual bowled fast as only 3 runs were conceded of the first over.Lakmal shared the new ball with Malinga as he also bowled a fine over that conceded just 3 runs in second over.Malinga restricted the South African openers from freeing their arms as only 4 runs were conceded in the third over.Meanwhile, the other attack bowler Lakmal was also bowling with such a fine technique as the margin of width was almost negligible in his bowling. Lakmal just conceded 3 runs in his over. The first five overs were exceptionally bowled as only 12 runs came of it. The sixth over being bowled by Lakmal conceded six runs as it was so unusual that South Africa without any boundary were 18 for no loss after six overs. It was in the seventh over when Q de Kock sliced a drive of Malinga and fetched the first boundary of the day in the process.South Africa were 24 after seven overs without losing any wicket.Lakmal meanwhile bowled yet another brilliant over while conceding just 3 runs. The skipper Upal Tharanga who is filling Angelo Matthews’ shoes in this match has decided to introduce Pradep instead in place for Malinga in the ninth over. Pradep bowled brilliantly as he only gave away one run.Lakmal showed some real consistency however the good over was somehow spoiled by Hashim Amla who put a bad delivery into the infield for four more. Indeed expertly done by AmlaSouth Africa were unconventionally slow as they were 32 for no loss after 10 overs.
