Wood strikes as England reach Champions Trophy semi-finals

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Mark Wood took the key wicket of Kane Williamson as England booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy with an 87-run win over New Zealand at Cardiff on Tuesday.New Zealand, set 311 for victory, finished on 223 all out with 39 balls left. They were in the hunt while captain Williamson, fresh from a hundred in the Blackcaps opening rain-marred no result against Australia, was making 87.But fast bowler Wood made the key breakthrough to dismiss the star batsman. Then, as happened after Williamsons departure against Australia, the Blackcaps slumped, this time losing their last seven wickets for 55 runs.Woods fellow paceman Jake Ball was named man-of-the-match for a return of two for 31 in eight overs up front.Victory saw England, who beat Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Oval in their Group A opener, into the last four of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international teams regardless of the result of their last pool fixture against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday. Two years ago, New Zealand thrashed England by eight wickets on home soil at the 2015 World Cup in Wellington. But this decisive win was a measure of Englands progress in the 50-over format since that chastening defeat.England were in danger of falling short of 300 after Joe Root (64), Alex Hales (56) and Ben Stokes (48) all got out when well set.But Jos Buttlers dashing unbeaten 61 off 48 balls, including a couple of extravagant sixes, helped take them to 310 all out.We tried to learn from our batting, explained England captain Eoin Morgan at the presentation ceremony. All our batsmen thought it (the pitch) was two-paced, so we thought there was no value in bowling full. The new-ball bowlers set the tone.Morgan added: Being in the semis is pretty good. Were not satisfied with that, we have a long way to go before we perform to our potential.Meanwhile Williamson, fined 40 percent of his match fee for New Zealands slow over-rate, accepted his side had been well-beaten.I think in all areas England outplayed us today, he said. It was very tough out there but credit to the way they went about their business. For Ball, who had expensive figures of one for 82 against Bangladesh, this was a welcome return to form.It was about trying to put it in the right area and hopefully something would happen, the Nottinghamshire paceman explained. It was quite blustery out there but everybody did their fair share into it today. The rain (before and during the match) juiced up the wicket a little bit.New Zealand lost their first wicket just four balls into their innings when Luke Ronchi was clean bowled for a golden duck by Ball. Both Williamson, posting his fifth fifty in as many ODIs against England, and Taylor were hit on the helmet by fast bowler Liam Plunkett, who finished with four for 55.But Williamson still drove Wood back over his head for four at a Cardiff ground rivalling Wellington as a windswept venue.Taylor, without being at his fluent best, offered sound support in a stand of 95.Morgan, shuffling his pack, recalled Wood and the Durham quick duly delivered the wicket his side badly needed when a rising ball took Williamsons glove and diving wicket-keeper Buttler clung on to the catch. It was the end of Williamsons 98-ball innings featuring eight fours. And when Taylor (39) holed out off Ball to midwicket, New Zealand were 168 for four in the 34th over.Leg-spinner Adil Rashid justified his selection in place of the injured Chris Woakes with two for 47 in 10 overs, with Plunkett ending the contest when Tim Southee was caught at deep midwicket. After just 30 minutes play, the match was halted at 11:00am local time (1000 GMT) as a national minutes silence in memory of the victims of Saturdays terror attack in London was observed.Root, fresh from his career-best 133 not out against Bangladesh, twice drove left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner for six.But he played on to Corey Anderson, while Stokes uppercut Trent Boult to Milne at third man.

Pakistan's Rumman replaces Wahab at Champions Trophy

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Pakistans Rumman Raes has been approved as a replacement for the injured Wahab Riaz at the ongoing Champions Trophy one-day tournament in Britain, the International Cricket Council announced Tuesday.Wahab suffered a tournament-ending ankle injury during Pakistans crushing 124-run defeat by title-holders India in their opening match at Edgbaston on Sunday.Rumman, also a left-arm fast bowler, has represented Pakistan in two Twenty20 Internationals to date. The 25-year-old has also taken 123 wickets in 42 first-class matches. But Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed indicated Junaid Khan, already with the squad, would replace Wahab for his sides second Group B fixture against South Africa at Edgbaston on Wednesday.Obviously Wahab is not playing. Junaid Khan is in, Sarfraz told reporters at Edgbaston on Tuesday.A miserable match for Wahab, flayed for a hugely expensive 87 runs in 8.4 overs, ended when he fell in his delivery stride and sustained an injury that saw him leave the field. It also meant he was unable to bat as Pakistan, chasing a revised target of 289 in 41 overs in a rain-affected match, slumped to 164 for nine after India had piled up 319 for three.Junaid was left out of the clash with arch-rivals India despite taking four for 73 in a warm-up match against Bangladesh.Pakistan need to beat top-ranked South Africa if they are to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals of a tournament featuring the worlds leading eight one-day nations. The Pakistanis conclude their group campaign against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on June 12.

Woakes in race to be fit for first South Africa Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England paceman Chris Woakes says he faces a race against time to be fit for the first Test with South Africa at Lords on July 6th.The 28-year-old has a left side strain which he suffered in Englands opening Champions Trophy match with Bangladesh last Thursday. He told Press Association Sport with the recovery time generally four to six weeks he was up against it in being fit for the first of the four Test series. Its a left side strain and there is a tear in the muscle, he said. Its a grade-two injury, which is not terrible news, but its not great news at the same time. They say its roughly a four to six-week injury, and its more likely to be towards the six when I am back playing competitive cricket.Im on day five of recovery now, and the physios say for the first 10 to 14 days theres not a lot we can do other than rest it.You dont rule it out, but Im probably up against it for the first Test. Sometimes these things heal quicker, sometimes they take longer, so we have to play it by ear.Woakes, who has played 17 Tests and 63 One Day Internationals, said he wouldnt risk returning too early just so he could play in the Test. Its also one of those things you cant rush back -- if you do, it can just ping again. You have to make sure youre right before you come back, he said. The timing of it is frustrating, its terrible, but its one of those things.

Australia will be ready for England showdown: Smith

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Steve Smith insists Australias batsmen will be ready for their do or die Champions Trophy showdown with England despite their lack of action in the tournament.Smiths side endured the frustration of having Mondays clash with Bangladesh abandoned due to rain, just days after their opening fixture against New Zealand was also washed out.On both occasions, it has been Australia who were batting in the early stages of their innings when bad weather ended play.Against Bangladesh, they had reached 83-1 in pursuit of 183 to win and required only four more overs to be bowled to ensure they would take maximum points via the Duckworth-Lewis rule used in rain-affected matches. With two points from their two matches, Australia will have to beat hosts England in Birmingham on June 10 to reach the semi-finals.I think it makes the equation pretty simple for us, Smith said.We have to beat England and then I think were through.I havent really read into anything else thats happened. I guess weve just got to beat England. In the circumstances, Australia could have done with their batsmen being in good form before the crunch encounter with their old rivals. But, asked if their lack of time at the crease could undermine them against England, Australia captain Smith said: Im sure they will be okay. You know, most of the guys have been playing a lot of cricket, anyway, having been at the IPL and things like that.I think once they get out in the middle, things will just click into place, and yeah, hopefully we can play well in Birmingham. On the bright side for Smith, his bowlers were more effective against Bangladesh after struggling to find their rhythm in the New Zealand match.Pace bowler Mitchell Starc was the cream of the crop with four wickets in nine balls in rout the Bangladesh tail.I thought all our bowlers were a lot better today. We hit some good areas early on and challenged the defence of Bangladeshi batsmen, Smith said.Everyone that bowled I thought did a pretty good job today, and it was nice that we were able to turn things around from the way things went in the first game against New Zealand.Starcs blistering spell was some consolation for Smith, but he was still left to rue the weather and what he felt was the umpires quick decision to go off, thus denying Australia a chance for those vital four overs.Of course I didnt want to go off. I was happy to keep batting through the rain, he said. But the umpires are there to make a decision and I think drinks was at the end of that over, which probably didnt help.If the game had just carried on, perhaps they may have had a different opinion. Its disappointing not to get a win but cant do much about the weather and we cant control that.Beaten by England in their opening match, Bangladesh are without a win and look likely to be eliminated in their last game against New Zealand.Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza remains hopeful of a miracle. You never know. I think even in 2015 World Cup, we got one point from Australia and went through. It really helped us, he said. This time we have a chance. We have to beat New Zealand and obviously we have to wait for a few results as well.Australia has to win against England and we have a great chance to beat New Zealand and go through. So lets see what happens.

Narendra Modi's four nation tour and the shifting global alliances

Posted:

WEB DESK – The recent six-day tour of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that concludes last Sunday is considered to be imperative in the recently changing global dynamics. The tour of Germany, Spain, Russia and France by an Indian premier in the background of Britain’s looming exit from the European Union and Washington’s pullout from the Paris climate accord could be a focal point more specifically if taken in the regional perspective.Apart from India’s economic engagement with these nations, the tour aimed to reconcile Indias drifting partnership with Russia as there are growing concerns in Delhi over Moscows spanking closeness to China and Pakistan.During the first leg of six-day tour, PM Modi met German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the two leaders discuss several critical global issues, including the situation in the South China Sea and more importantly Chinas One Belt, One Road initiative and the growing threat of terrorism.Pursuing his tour of Europe, PM Modi travelled to Spain as it was the first by an Indian prime minister in almost three decades.PM Modi met the President of Spain Mariano Rajoy as he discussed bilateral relations, trade and other significant issues. The Indian premier also called upon King Felipe VI and had crucial discussions with leading Spanish businessmen and leaders. The China-Russia-Pakistan nexus is becoming troublesome for India as it could have drastic impacts on the strategic balance of the region. However, when Modi and Putin discussed the situations during the third leg of PM Modi’s visit, an opportunity was there to clear the air over perceived misconceptions. Both the leaders discussed a decline in trade besides resolving tensions in the light of shifting global alliances when they meet ahead of a summit in Saint Petersburg. On June 2, Modi and Putin address the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) where India was the ‘guest country’.In a first meeting of its kind, I will also have the opportunity to engage with Governors from various Russian regions to further broad base bilateral cooperation and more actively involve States/Regions and other diversified stakeholders, Modi revealed prior to the conference. In the last leg of the tour, Modi visited France from June 2 to 3 for an official meeting with the newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron. It is worth mentioning here that France is India’s 9th largest investment partner and also a key partner in its development initiatives in various core areas.

Man Utd world's most valuable club now, not Madrid: Forbes

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Manchester United have overtaken Real Madrid as the worlds most valuable football team, US magazine Forbes announced on Tuesday in its annual global list ranking the sports wealthiest clubs.Uniteds enduring brand appeal and aggressive sponsorship strategies had helped the Premier League side reclaim top spot for the first time in five years, with a worth estimated at $3.69 billion (3.27 billion euros), Forbes said in its survey.Although Real Madrid have enjoyed unparallelled success in the Champions League -- clinching unprecedented back-to-back titles on Saturday for a record 12th crown -- United have roared past the Spanish giants in the commercial stakes.According to Forbes, United generated revenues of $765 million during the 2015-2016 season, $77 million more than both Barcelona and Real Madrid.Manchester Uniteds return to the top spot is a testament to their powerful brand and marketing acumen, Forbes Media assistant managing editor Mike Ozanian said in a statement. The Forbes survey found United to be the most profitable team in the world with an operating income of $288 million, $107 million more than Real.Barcelona were placed at number two on the 2017 rankings, with a value of $3.64 billion while Real -- first place for the past four years -- had slipped to third with a value of $3.58 billion. The top five was completed by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich ($2.71 billion) and English Premier League side Manchester City ($2.08 billion).Uniteds ascent to top spot comes despite a relatively fallow period in the clubs on-field fortunes. The Red Devils have not won the domestic title since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and could only muster a sixth place finish in the Premier League under new manager Jose Mourinho. The club did claim victory in the Europa League however, a win which guaranteed their entry to next seasons money-spinning Champions League.Off the field though Uniteds fortunes have soared, fuelled by the Premier Leagues multi-billion-dollar television deal which makes the English league by far the wealthiest in the world.Uniteds coffers have also swollen due to an array of global commercial tie-ups and a kit deal with Adidas worth a reported $90 million a year. The financial might of English football is reflected in the fact that six of the top 10 most valuable clubs hail from the Premier League.Arsenal were ranked sixth in the list with a value of $1.93 billion, just ahead of Chelsea ($1.85 billion) and Liverpool ($1.26 billion).Italian giants Juventus -- beaten by Real Madrid in last weekends Champions League final -- came in ninth with $1.26 billion.Tottenham rounded out the top 10 with a value of $1.06 billion.French side Paris Saint-Germain were 11th on the list with a value estimated at $841 million.
