Pakistan stun South Africa in Champions Trophy

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Pakistan put their miserable hammering by arch-rivals India behind them with a shock 19-run win over South Africa at Edgbaston on Tuesday that kept their Champions Trophy semi-final hopes alive.Just three days after suffering a humiliating 124-run defeat by title-holders India at Edgbaston in their opening group match, with former skipper Shahid Afridi among those slamming a clueless display, Pakistans return to the Birmingham ground saw them make a mockery of the rankings which had them bottom and South Africa top in this eight-team one-day international tournament.Having conceded 319 for three against title-holders India, Pakistan restricted South Africa to 219 for eight after losing the toss. After the spinners did the initial damage, paceman Hasan Ali took three for 24 in eight overs.David Millers unbeaten 75 kept the Proteas in the game. And when fast bowler Morne Morkel took two wickets in three balls, Pakistan were faltering at 41 for two under the floodlights in this day/night fixture. But Babar Azam (31 not out) and Shoaib Malik (16 not out) took Pakistan to 119 for three off 27 overs when heavy rain stopped play at 7:41pm.That left them well ahead of their target score of 101 so that when the umpires finally decided more than two hours later that a resumption was impossible, Pakistan had beaten South Africa under the Duckworth/Lewis method for the second successive ICC 50-over tournament following a 29-run win at the 2015 World Cup.It left Group B wide open, with three teams on a win apiece after South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by 96 runs at the Oval last week. Its a very important win for us, said Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed. We were good in all departments today.Steve Rixon (the Pakistan fielding coach) was very happy today, we didnt field well the other day, today we were much better.Hasan, the man-of-the-match, added: We all worked very hard on our fielding.South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who suffered the first golden duck in his 212 career ODI innings during the Proteas top-order collapse, said: They bowled pretty well, put us under pressure.De Villiers, struggling with a hamstring problem, added: The hamstring is okay, felt a little tweak, but well check it out tomorrow (Thursday). I dont think its too serious.Pakistans Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan, in for the injured Wahab Riaz, took the new ball. But it was the spin duo of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Hafeez who did the early damage.Left-armer Imad struck second ball when Hasim Amla (16) was lbw.Off-spinner Hafeez then had Quinton de Kock (33) lbw on the sweep. The two spinners combined when de Villiers departed by slicing Imad to Hafeez at backward point -- a wicket greeted by huge cheers from the large Pakistan contingent in a crowd of more than 18,000.Hasan, as Imad had done, struck second ball when Faf du Plessis (26) played on.He then took two wickets in two balls with a couple of brilliant deliveries to reduce South Africa to 118 for six in the 29th over.He took the outside edge of JP Duminys bat, with Babar holding a good diving slip catch, and then knocked over Wayne Parnells off-stump.Miller, however, received good support from Chris Morris (28) and Kagiso Rabada (26) in stands of 47 and 48 respectively.Pakistans collapse to 164 all out against India would have given South Africa hope, despite their below par total. But Fakhar Zaman, making an ODI debut in place of the dropped Ahmed Shehzad, got Pakistans chase off to a brisk start. The left-hander eventually fell for 33 when, deceived by Morkels slower ball, he edged to Amla at slip. Two balls later, Azhar Ali (nine) carelessly uppercut Morkel to Pakistan-born leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who took three for 18 in seven overs.Tahir took another good catch, at long leg to dismiss Hafeez (26) off an uppish pull against Morkel.

No pressure on underdogs Sri Lanka, says Mathews

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Angelo Mathews insists there is no pressure on Sri Lanka in their crucial Champions Trophy clash against India on Thursday because the defending champions are expected to thrash his underdogs.Mathews side must beat India at The Oval to keep alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals, but the odds are against a Sri Lanka team hit by injury and suspension.Sri Lanka looked like tournament also rans when they lost to South Africa by 96 runs in their Group B opener last weekend.Already in the midst of a rebuilding project following the retirement of several stars, Sri Lanka will be without Upul Tharanga, banned for his teams slow over rate, against India, while batsman Chamara Kapugedera may miss out due to injury.Mathews knows India, who thrashed Pakistan in their first group match, are firm favourites to maintain their 100 percent record. But the Sri Lanka captain hopes being written off will allow his team to play with enough freedom to spring a surprise.People will want India to come in and thrash us, and its just all the pressure is off us, Mathews told a press conference at The Oval on Wednesday. We are happy to walk in as the underdogs. I mean, no one really expects us to win the championship. Which takes a lot of pressure out of the guys.We just have to go out there, just express ourselves and be aggressive. That is our brand of cricket, being aggressive and positive.Tharangas absence is a blow for Sri Lanka and Mathews, who missed the South Africa match due to a calf injury, pulled no punches as he slammed the stand-in skipper and his team-mates for failing to keep up with the required over rate. The over rate was an issue. It was pathetic. I call it pathetic because of the whole team, and the captain was warned several times, and theres no excuse at all but to take responsibility for that because nobody else can take responsibility on it, Mathews said. The whole team is responsible, including the captain. Its a very hard job on the field, and he has to look into so many things. The rest of the players has to support them. Most of the teams play with four seamers and they have not had an issue. We played only three and weve had an issue. That has been addressed and it will not happen again. While Mathews is aware he is in charge of a largely inexperienced group still finding their way on the international stage, he expects them to rise to the challenge sooner rather than later. The guys are learning every single day. If you look at most of the guys, they havent played a lot of international cricket, he said. The more you play, the more you learn. Everyone has to step up with their roles because we cant just expect things to fall in line.Weve got to make it happen, and weve got to make it happen soon.It might be hard to see too many signs of progress against the might of India and Mathews, who will return to the line-up as a batsman but may not bowl, conceded Virat Kohlis group are formidable.Theyre a force in world cricket no matter where they play. Theyve played fantastic cricket over so many years, he said. Its very hard to beat them unless we are on top of our game.We will all have to pull our socks up and give a great performance.

Sri Lanka hit by Kapugedera injury blow

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Sri Lanka batsman Chamara Kapugedera was ruled out of the rest of the Champions Trophy after suffering an injury in practice on Wednesday.Kapugedera sustained what the International Cricket Council later confirmed was a knee injury on the eve of Sri Lankas second match in the tournament against India at the Oval on Thursday. The ICC said its event technical committee had approved Danushka Gunathilaka as a replacement for Kapugedera in the Sri Lanka squad for the tournament.Gunathilaka, a 26-year-old left-handed top-order batsman and off-spinner, has represented Sri Lanka in 19 one-day internationals in which he has scored 420 runs and taken five wickets. His last ODI was against Bangladesh in Colombo earlier this year.Earlier, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews revealed Kapugedera has gone for a scan to determine the extent of his injury.Yeah he just got injured at training, so we sent him for an MRI scan, Mathews told a press conference at The Oval on Wednesday.Kapugederas injury is the latest blow to Sri Lanka after stand-in captain Upul Tharanga, deputising for the injured Mathews, was banned for the remaining two group matches as punishment for his teams slow over rate against South Africa last weekend. The 30-year-old middle order batsman, who made his international debut in 2006, was dismissed for nought against the South Africans as Sri Lanka lost their Group B opener by 96 runs.

England will not give Aussies easy ride, says Buttler

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Jos Buttler says England will not flinch in the face of some aggressive Australian bowling in their Champions Trophy group match on Saturday, and will hopefully deal a blow to their old rivals title hopes. The 26-year-old wicketkeeper -- who along with Joe Root and captain Eoin Morgan survive from the 2013 Champions Trophy side that beat Australia at the same stage and at the same Edgbaston ground -- added there would be no let-up in Birmingham from him and his team-mates despite securing their place in the last four.Buttler, who scored an invaluable 61 not out in Englands 87-run win over New Zealand on Tuesday to clinch their semi-final spot, claimed the England players were thinking more of maintaining their momentum than potentially eliminating Australia. The Australians -- who have been bedevilled by the weather with two no results against Bangladesh and New Zealand -- could still go through depending on the outcome of the other group game between the Kiwis and the Bangladeshis. We wont think too much about it... but it is always nice to know that would be the outcome if we did win, said Buttler. We now know we have qualified for the semi-finals, but we want to be going into a semi-final on the back of a win -- and well be desperate to do that on Saturday.Buttler, who hopes Saturdays game will be remembered more for its cricket than was the case in 2013 when Australian opener David Warner punched Root in a Birmingham bar, said any match with Australia was always a big occasion no matter what was at stake.Of course... any England-Australia game is a huge game, he said. Both sides are very aggressive, attacking teams. We will not change our style of cricket. Well keep trying to take them on.Theyve got some good pace bowlers, but well try and be aggressive with the bat as well.

Morgan lauds 'outstanding' attack as England seal semi spot

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - England captain Eoin Morgan praised his outstanding bowling attack after the tournament hosts booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy with an 87-run win over New Zealand in Cardiff.Tuesdays success means England will return to the Welsh capital as Group A winners for a last four clash against the as yet unknown Group B runners-up on June 14, in an event featuring the worlds leading eight one-day international teams.England looked to have fallen short of a par score despite making 310 all out after Joe Root (64), Alex Hales (56) and Ben Stokes (48) were all dismissed when well set before Jos Buttlers unbeaten 61 boosted the total. But fast bowler Mark Wood took the key wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson (87) in the 31st over.Williamsons exit sparked a collapse that saw New Zealand lose their last eight wickets for 65 runs on the way to a total of 223 all out.Liam Plunkett took four for 55, with his fellow paceman Jake Ball named man-of-the-match after striking early to dismiss Luke Ronchi for a duck on his way to fine figures of two for 31 in eight overs.Meanwhile, leg-spinner Adil Rashid justified his recall in place of injured all-rounder Chris Woakes with a 10-over return of two for 47.Morgan feared England didnt have enough runs to play with after being sent into bat by Williamson.I thought we were probably 10 or 15 below par -- given that 320 is probably a par score regardless of the game were playing in these days, said Morgan after England had still passed 300 in half of their 46 ODIs since a humiliating first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup.Wood produced a superb delivery that Williamson, seemingly on course for a second successive century after his hundred in the Blackcaps rain-ruined no result opener against Australia, could only glove to diving wicket-keeper Buttler.Guys like him (Wood) are so valuable to the team -- and you cant leave any of our bowlers out, Morgan insisted.I thought they did an outstanding job. They were truly the highlight of the day.Our batting performance was probably par or below par -- so pretty average.Williamson, reflecting on the delivery from Wood that ended the innings said the Durham quick, fit following a persistent ankle injury, was a tough man to face.Hes a very good bowler, unique in the fact that he bowls at such good pace off maybe a five to 10-metre run-up -- which you dont see too much around the world, said Williamson.Hes performed very, very well for England over a period of time -- especially coming back after injury... so certainly he is a strength of their bowling attack.Defeat was made worse for Williamson when the International Cricket Council fined him 40 percent and his players 20 percent of their match fees for a slow over-rate during Englands innings.Morgan, meanwhile, knows his side will top the group regardless of the result of their final pool fixture against Australia, on Saturday, where a win over their Ashes rivals for the second time in successive Champions Trophy editions at Edgbaston would likely eliminate their oldest foes. For all that they were already into the last four, Morgan promised no let-up against World Cup champions Australia as England, in marked contrast, seek their first major 50-over title.I think if were truly going to be contenders for this tournament, we need to beat the best teams -- and Australia are one of the best teams, he said. They always are going into a white-ball tournament. They seem to produce limited-overs cricketers at will, the former Ireland international added. So to go into a game like that with no other attitude than winning is very important to us.

LONDON (AFP) - Britain on Wednesday hit the final day of campaigning for a general election darkened by jihadist attacks in two cities, leaving forecasters struggling to predict an outcome on polling day.Eight people are now confirmed to have died in Saturdays attack in London, after police said a body had been recovered from the River Thames in the search for a missing Frenchman. The family of a Spanish man who used his skateboard to defend a woman from one of the assailants confirmed on Wednesday that he had died.A 30-year-old man was arrested in east London earlier Wednesday in connection with the attack, which also left 48 people injured.Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May and main opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn were criss-crossing the country on Wednesday, targeting urban areas whose votes could be crucial. The prime minister stunned Britain on April 18 when she announced a snap election, hoping to transform a massive opinion-poll lead into an equally huge majority in the House of Commons, where she holds a slim 17-seat advantage in the 650-member legislature. But the political ground began to shift under her feet, moving from Brexit -- Mays strongest card -- to domestic policy and her own record on security, both of them favouring Corbyn.Opinion polls -- hampered by a poor reputation for reliability -- predict a May win.But depending on polling methodology, victory could range from around 50 seats to a loss of seats and even no majority at all.May is fighting to push her message that she is a strong and stable leader compared with Corbyn, able to fight Britains corner in Brussels, where formal Brexit talks are due to start on June 19.Get those negotiations wrong and the consequences will be dire, May said Wednesday. An upbeat Corbyn said the partys chances had been underestimated, as he promised to reverse cuts rolled out under the Conservatives. The choice is another five years of a Tory government, underfunding of services all across the UK, including here in Scotland, or a Labour government that invests for all, all across Britain, he told supporters in Glasgow.Corbyn gains?Despite being seen as an unlikely leader -- one who has had to face off a rebellion by his own MPs -- Corbyn has gained momentum during the election campaign and regularly attracts big crowds to his rallies.Labour gained a boost after the May 18 release of the Conservatives manifesto, outlining elderly care costs which the tabloids dubbed the dementia tax.The pledge hit the partys core supporters and May was forced to backtrack on capping the costs, prompting further criticism that she was unreliable.Corbyn then found a valuable seam in attacking May on security, an area where the Conservatives traditionally are far stronger than Labour in voters minds.A string of terror attacks have occurred since May became prime minister last July, and she was interior minister for six years before she rose to the top job.Corbyn attacked her for slashing police numbers during her ministerial spell, and vowed to hire more police for neighbourhood patrols.University of London professor Eric Kaufmann said that while the outcome could hinge on the turnout among young voters -- believed to be overwhelmingly pro-Labour -- traditionally British youth did not rush to the polls in great numbers.Theres no obvious reason why that would rebound, he said. Im sort of with the general polls which suggest that the Tories will increase their majority by around 25 seats.Security questionsQuestions are also being raised about the vaunted image of Britains security services. Three terror attacks have taken place since March, leaving 34 dead and around 200 injured, and all involved assailants who were known to the authorities. In the most recent attack, eight people were killed on Saturday when three men aboard a hired van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge and went on a stabbing spree before being shot by police.French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Wednesday that a third citizen had died in the attack. London police said they had recovered a body from the Thames, but did not immediately confirm it was Xavier Thomas, a missing 45-year-old Frenchman.Attacker Khuram Shazad Butt was known to British intelligence services, while an Italian prosecutor said Britain had been notified that one of his accomplices, Youssef Zaghba, was a possible suspect back in March 2016.Their rampage followed a similar attack next to the British parliament in March, in which assailant Khalid Masood was shot after killing five people. In the most deadly attack, Salman Abedi killed 22 people at a Manchester concert venue on May 22 when he detonated a suicide bomb.In the wake of the latest attack, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said there had been a fivefold increase in anti-Muslim crimes. Writing on Facebook, Khan said the city would take a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime in the British capital.Police forces around Britain have reviewed security arrangements for election day. Londons Metropolitan Police said there would be a specialist and highly flexible operation in place that can deploy and respond as needed.
