Pakistan, Indian delegations discuss Jadhav case timelines with ICJ President

Posted:

THE HAGUE (Dunya News/APP) – The delegations of Pakistan and India on Thursday met ICJ president Ronny Abraham to discuss the timelines in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case. The Registrar of the court and other court officials were also present in the meeting. This was not a hearing and no discussion on the substance or merits of the case was held, a press release issued here from the Attorney General Office said. The purpose of the meeting was only to discuss procedural matters, including the timelines for submission of written memorials and to enable a hearing to be listed. The ICJ president sought the views of the parties as to time required for the submission of their written pleadings and supporting evidence called memorials.Pakistani delegation led by Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali urged the Court to adopt an expedited timetable with a view for an early substantive hearing. The Court will now announce the timetable shortly.Aattorney general Ashtar Ausaf Ali also informed The Hague-based world court of its intention to appoint an ad hoc judge to sit on the bench hearing Jadhav’s case. The ICJ’s rules allow a country that is party to a case to appoint an ad hoc judge if an opposing party has a judge in the bench. An Indian judge is part of the panel hearing Jadhav’s case. The Indian application seeks at least release or acquittal of Commander Jadhav. As was made clear by Pakistan’s counsel, Khawar Qureshi QC,on May 15, India can never obtain this from the ICJ. As has also been explained previously, the court on May 18 made a procedural order to enable a full hearing to take place. It did not make any finding on jurisdiction or merits.Pakistan’s arguments on jurisdiction and merits will be considered by the Court at the full hearing. As can be seen from paragraph 60 of the court order of 18th May 2017 itself, the court stated that it in no way prejudgedjurisdiction, admissibility or merits. The Government of Pakistan is fully confident that India can never succeed in its application. India can never obtain acquittal or release of Commander Jadhav on the basis of its application to the International Court.

Mathews joy as Sri Lanka rock India

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Angelo Mathews saluted Sri Lankas underdogs after they staged a brilliant run chase to stun Champions Trophy holders India by seven wickets on Thursday.Mathews side were written off by many experts in the build-up to the crucial Group B clash at The Oval, but they ignored the doubters to keep alive their bid to qualify for the semi-finals.Tasked with chasing 322 to win, Sri Lanka knocked off the runs with eight balls to spare thanks to memorable contributions from Kusal Mendis (89), Danushka Gunathilaka (76) and captain Mathews (52).Its one of the top wins, to beat India. The bowlers did brilliantly to restrict India to 321. It was a very chaseable target, Mathews said. Not many people expected us to win and that took a lot of pressure off us.I thought the second-wicket partnership (between Gunathilaka and Mendis) was vital. They set us the platform. It wasnt easy for Gunathilaka to walk into the side and bat like how he did.It was an emotional return for Mathews, who hadnt played an ODI since August following a calf injury. His calm innings steadied the ship just as India were trying to regain the momentum.I tried to hit as many balls in the nets as possible, it makes you feel good and that helped me come back from injury, he said.Sri Lanka can qualify for the semi-finals if they beat Pakistan in their final group match in Cardiff on June 12, while India must beat South Africa on June 11 to avoid a humiliating exit. Its a must-win game for all of us in the group, Mathews added.India captain Virat Kholi admitted Sri Lanka deserved their famous win, but he was disappointed his bowlers didnt follow the game-plan.We felt we had enough on the board. We trusted out bowlers, but Sri Lanka were pretty good. They kept the momentum through the innings, they picked their areas to hit and executed really well, Kohli said.Theres always hindsight. I thought we bowled decently, but when you dont execute properly, there is always food for thought. You have to give credit to the other team. In a tournament like this especially.

Miller backs De Villiers to come good against India

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - AB de Villiers is due a big score against Champions Trophy title-holders India according to fellow South Africa batsman David Miller after the Proteas skipper suffered the first golden duck of his one-day international career.De Villierss maiden first-ball exit in 212 ODI innings came during South Africas shock 19-run loss to Pakistan at Edgbaston on Wednesday -- a result that threw Group B wide open.Only the top two sides in each of the two pools will go through to the semi-finals of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight 50-over nations. That makes Sundays clash with India at the Oval potentially pivotal to a South Africa side who beat Sri Lanka in their group opener.Millers unbeaten 75 was the batting highlight of a below par total of 219 for eight against Pakistan, an innings where de Villiers sliced left-arm spinner Imad Wasim to backward point.Star batsman de Villiers, also nursing a hamstring problem, has now managed just four runs this tournament. But Miller is confident this is just a blip for the usually prolific 33-year-old right-hander.Hes the best player in the world so its nice when he does perform 95 percent of the time, Miller told reporters at Edgbaston after Wednesdays surprise day/night reverse. But I havent seen him go out for nought too many times in his career. Hes human.Theres enough good batsmen in the team to contribute at the same time. I dont think its really a huge problem at all, Miller added.Weve done well over the last two, two-and-a-half years as a top six. All the batsmen we have can do a job.AB didnt come off but hes definitely due (a big score) on Sunday. With de Villiers, for so long a key figure in all three international formats, opting out of Test cricket for the rest of the year because of the strain of his workload, questions have been raised about the course of his career. But Morne Morkel, a longstanding South Africa team-mate, said there was no doubting de Villierss desire to win a major limited-overs trophy with the Proteas. Its a big tournament for him as well, said Morkel. For all of us.We are hungry to take this trophy back home. Its the first-ball duck in 200 games. He is only human.Us as players or team-mates, we need to stand up as well and take responsibility. Its not all on ABs shoulders.Thats just the truth of it, added the fast bowler, whose impressive haul of three for 18 on Wednesday could not prevent Pakistan winning a rain-marred match on the Duckworth/Lewis method.AB has got all the energy and is still hungry to play, insisted Morkel.

South Africa's Morkel wary of Kohli threat

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Morne Morkel is hoping for a chance to put the brakes on the prolific Virat Kohli when South Africa face India in their final Champions Trophy group match this weekend.Sundays clash against the title-holders at the Oval has taken on added significance for the Proteas after a shock defeat by Pakistan at Edgbaston on Wednesday. The one highlight in the field for South Africa was the form of the towering quick bowler Morkel, who took two wickets in four balls on his way to three for 18 in seven overs. But asked what his plans were for bowling at Indias captain Kohli, who made an unbeaten 81 against Pakistan last weekend, paceman Morkel told reporters: I was hoping you guys could tell me that.Sunday is a big day for us. Its going to take a big team effort to knock over India. But we have to back ourselves to win.Prior to South Africas recent series against England, the 32-year-old had not played an ODI since June 2016, with Proteas coach Russell Domingo worried his inclusion lengthened the batting tail. But with wickets likely to be at a premium against Indias powerful top order, Morkel, a veteran of 111 ODIs, may have done enough to retain his place. The last eight months there have been a lot of uncertainties, said Morkel. When I got on the field, I said to myself this is really an opportunity for me to stand up and unfortunately it wasnt meant to be.Today, we need to write off, just see it as an average game. Hopefully on Sunday we can turn it up and deliver something special.South Africa may be top of the International Cricket Council ODI rankings but the standings were turned on their head by eighth-ranked Pakistan who won for a fourth time in their last five ODIs against the Proteas. We havent played good cricket and weve got to take that on the chin, said Domingo.Pakistan played better than us and it had absolutely nothing to do with complacency as far as Im concerned.India thrashed Pakistan by 124 runs on Sunday. But Pakistan bounced back to restrict South Africa to a modest 219 for eight on a miserable day for skipper AB de Villiers who was dismissed for a first golden duck in his 212th ODI innings and suffered a hamstring niggle. They replied with 119 for three off 27 overs when rain ended the match, enough for victory by 19 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method.Everybody gets first-ballers, its just taken him 200 games. Ive got no concerns with AB de Villiers, said Domingo.Im expecting a big performance from him on Sunday. Hes that type of player that when the team needs him hell turn it up.De Villiers played down his injury as a little tweak.I dont think its too serious, he told Sky Sports.India face Sri Lanka in their second group match at the Oval on Thursday.

Roy of the openers still England's man

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Jason Roy received fresh re-assurance Thursday about his place in Englands team at the Champions Trophy, with the Surrey opener urged to stay true to his attacking game by assistant coach Paul Farbrace despite a recent run of low scores. Before the one-day international tournament got underway, England captain Eoin Morgan said there was no question of Roy being dropped. This season, however, has seen the 26-year-old Roy manage just 47 runs in seven one-day international innings, his lean spell continuing into the start of hosts Englands Champions Trophy campaign. Its not as if England lack alternatives with the in-form Jonny Bairstow having demonstrated his ability to open in white-ball cricket courtesy of a career-best 174 at the top of the order for Yorkshire last month. But with England already through to the semi-finals of an event featuring the worlds top eight ODI sides ahead of their final Group A match against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday, Farbrace said now was not the time for a change of batsman.England have been a transformed side in the 50-over game since their woeful first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. It was at Edgbaston nearly two years ago where England showed they were determined to learn from that flop with a new approach to ODI cricket. They posted a then national record 408 for nine against New Zealand -- one of several totals of more than 300 in half of their last 46 ODIs.Roy, however, made a golden duck in his first ODI innings before Joe Root and Jos Buttler struck centuries. But England believe the the benefits of Roys dynamic approach, as exemplified by a three-figure strike-rate, are worth the risks of some low scores along the way.The selflessness ... Jason Roy epitomised it in that first series here against New Zealand, he played in the way we want people to play, said Farbrace.Thats continued, added Farbrace the deputy to Englands Australian head coach Trevor Bayliss. One of the things weve been very consistent on is selection.Weve stuck by people when they havent been taking wickets or scoring runs, and its always paid dividends.Hes not getting out to shots he hasnt played (before), but when youre not playing well they do look like tough dismissals. You just have to keep backing them.I dont see any point in making changes before the semi-final next Wednesday.

Warner slams CA over pay dispute video

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - David Warner has accused Cricket Australia of trying to wreck the teams bid to win the Champions Trophy by broadcasting a new video relating to the ongoing pay dispute.A resolution to the increasingly bitter row looked as far away as ever when a fresh war of words between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) broke out on Wednesday.CAs latest video release saw their lead negotiator, Kevin Roberts, anger the ACA by contradicting their claims over the costs of running Australian cricket.Australia face hosts England in a make or break Champions Trophy match at Birminghams Edgbaston ground on Saturday, where a defeat could see them fail to qualify for the semi-finals of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international teams. Were here to win and if CA want to try and help us win I think they wouldnt be releasing videos like that, Australia vice-captain Warner told reporters at Edgbaston on Thursday. From our stance as players it is disappointing. For us we have an important game coming up this week and that is our focus and the MoU (memorandum of understanding) can wait until after the game and the tournament.CA has threatened not to pay contracted players beyond the June 30 expiry of their current financial deal if they do not accept a new offer.Warner has become the most high-profile senior Australia international in robustly arguing the players case, with the left-handed opener arguing that if they dont have a contract then they wont be able to play in the showpiece home Ashes Test series against England that starts in November. As weve said, we just want a fair share but leave it (the talks) until after the games, Warner added Thursday. We have 100 percent support with the ACA to get to the table with CA. All the players are sticking together as one. Were the ones that have been here putting it through social media and CA are the guys who have been trying to explain via videos.Australia coach Darren Lehmann, once an ACA executive member, has found himself caught in the middle and he urged the feuding parties to begin discussions as soon as possible.I just want them to start talking, we want it resolved from a player point of view and obviously from a CA point of view, said the former Test batsman.CA is determined to scrap revenue-sharing after 20 years, saying more funds are needed for the games grassroots, and that the offer it has on the table provided handsomely for players. But the ACA is equally adamant in wanting to retain revenue-sharing, saying the system does not need fixing.
