Trump declares 'patience is over' with North Korea

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trump declared that the US had run out of patience with North Korea over its nuclear drive Friday as he welcomed South Koreas new leader Moon Jae-In to talks at the White House. While Moon has been arguing for greater engagement with Pyongyang as the best way to put the brakes on its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, Trump made clear that he was in no mood to pursue diplomacy with a regime he accused of having no respect for human life. And while Moon announced that Trump had accepted an offer to visit Seoul later this year, the leaders failed to map out any kind of joint strategy on how best to deal with the threat posed by the North Korean leadership.Together, we are facing the threat of the reckless and brutal regime in North Korea. The nuclear and ballistic missile programs of that regime require a determined response, said Trump. The North Korean dictatorship has no regard for the safety and security of its people, for its neighbors and has no respect for human life. The Trump administration has been growing increasingly exasperated with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Uns regime which has staged a barrage of missile tests in recent months. There was also deep anger in the United States after Otto Warmbier, an American student who was detained in North Korea on a tourist trip around 18 months ago, was returned home in a coma earlier this month. He died several days later.Trump had been pinning his hopes on China -- North Koreas main diplomatic ally -- to bring pressure to bear on Pyongyang but declared last week that their efforts had failed. The era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed, many years it has failed. Frankly, that patience is over, Trump said at a press briefing in the Rose Garden. And while he avoided criticizing his guests approach, Trump made clear he was in no mood to enter dialogue with North Korea but rather saw sanctions as the best way to proceed. The United States calls on other regional powers and all responsible nations to join us in implementing sanctions and demanding that the North Korean regime choose a better path and do it quickly and a different future for its long suffering people, he said.- Gravest challenge -Washington, South Koreas security guarantor, has more than 28,000 troops in the country to defend it from its communist neighbor, which has been intensifying missile tests -- including five since Moons inauguration.Moon said there was no dispute between his government and Trump over the nature of the threat posed by North Korea. The gravest challenge confronting our two nations is the nuclear and missile threat posed by North Korea, he said.President Trump and I decided to place a top priority on addressing this issue, and coordinate closely on relevant policies. To this end, we will employ both sanctions and dialogue in a phased and comprehensive approach... to seek a fundamental resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem.Moon has used his first foreign trip to lobby the Trump administration and congressional leaders to back his policy of engagement with the North.Ahead of his arrival, Moon argued that Seoul and Washington must offer concessions to Pyongyang if it complies with demands for a nuclear freeze -- as a gateway to dialogue, and to eventual dismantlement of its nuclear program. But the Trump administrations hardening stance was illustrated on Thursday when it slapped sanctions on a Chinese bank linked to North Korea -- drawing an angry response from Beijing. The two leaders also spoke about bilateral trade, with Trump saying the current $17 billion dollar trade deficit with Seoul was unacceptable, highlighting the number of Korean-made cars on American roads.Im encouraged by President Moons assurances that he will work to create a level playing field so that American workers and businesses and especially automakers can have a fair shake at dealing with South Korea, he said.

Jadhav, Dhoni star with bat in 3rd WI ODI

Posted:

NORTH SOUND (AFP) - Kedar Jadhav triggered a late run explosion in partnership with Mahendra Singh Dhoni as India reached 251 for four batting first against the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Friday.Dhoni top-scored in the third fixture of a five-match One-Day International series with an unbeaten 78 off 79 balls on a sluggish pitch. However, the real impetus came from Jadhav, who blazed 40 off 26 balls in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 81 runs off just 46 deliveries.Ajinkya Rahane had earlier held the innings together after the loss of early wickets, the opening batsman extending his excellent run of form in the series with 72 off 112 balls, his third consecutive score over 50 in the Caribbean.Comprehensively beaten by 105 runs in the second match in Trinidad five days earlier following a rain-ruined no-result to start the series, West Indies took early advantage of the pitch conditions which made free scoring difficult.Miguel Cummins removed Shikhar Dhawan in just the third over of the match to a catch at third man while Jason Holder justified his decision to field first on winning the toss when he claimed the prized scalp of Virat Kohli, his Indian counterpart being brilliantly caught by Kyle Hope at gully.Hope, elder brother of wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope, is one of two ODI debutants in the West Indies team, the other being fast bowler Kesrick Williams. From 34 for two in the tenth over, Rahane found a reliable partner in Yuvraj Singh, the pair putting on 66 for the third wicket before Devendra Bishoo trapped Yuvraj lbw for 39, the original not out decision on the field being overturned on review.Dhoni then joined Rahane in another important stand of 70, although both found the spinners especially hard to get away on the turgid surface.Bishoo and off-spinner Ashley Nurse completed a combined 20 overs at a cost of just 72 runs. However, the acceleration finally came with the arrival of Jadhav at the crease in the 43rd over when Rahane became Cummins second wicket of the innings. Both batsmen took on the faster bowlers with gusto and rattled a West Indies team that looked on course to keep the Indians well below the 250-run mark.A measure of the difficulty in scoring was the failure of any of the batsmen except the adventurous Jadhav to score at better than a run-a-ball.Seeking victory to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series, India are fielding the same XI for the third consecutive match.

Rain water accumulates in Quaid's Karachi residence Wazir Mansion

KARACHI (Dunya News) – While nationwide rain was welcomed as a blessing after severe heat, it turned out to be a bane for local citizens of Karachi due to improper arrangements by the government institutions.Even the residence of the Pakistan’s Quaid-e-Azam named “Wazir Mansion” in the Sindh provincial capital could not be freed from the accumulation of water. The two-storey building was reportedly embedded with the rain water during the pre-monsoon week. Met Office had already issued an alert a few days ago and warned authorities to make necessary arrangements for smooth running of affairs.Photo Credit: ONLINEHowever, Sindh government paid a very little heed to predict the hazards of rain for the metropolitan city. Areas beside Wazir Mansion including Kharadar, Mithadar, Kapra Market and Bolton Market also sank in the excessive untreated water on the roads. The residents asked how the government will take care of locals when it couldn’t even prevent the destruction of a house once resided by the national hero. The media was consistent in covering the areas under high accumulation of water and political and administrative heads paid little attention to their cry. The local institutions failed to fulfill their promises in the populous regions.Civilized nations are known to respect their leaders and honour the achievements. The destruction of his residence and accumulation of water in it shows how much we care about his belongings.

Zimbabwe thrash Sri Lanka in ODI

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - Solomon Mire smashed his maiden one-day century on Friday to take Zimbabwe to a historic six wicket win over Sri Lanka and pile pressure on the beleaguered Asian nation.Mire hit 112 off 96 balls as Zimbabwe reached 322-4 to pass Sri Lankas 316-5 with more than two overs to spare. It was the first time in more than 200 one day internationals in Sri Lanka that a visiting team has scored more than a 300 run target to get a victory.Sri Lanka have been criticised in recent days by the countrys sports minister for being overweight and unfit. Captain Angelo Mathews also laid into his players after the defeat.Having 315 on the board, I thought it was enough, he said. Our bowling was poor and our fielding was pathetic. It was a good batting effort by them.Mire, known for his quickfire hitting, was twice dropped as Sri Lanka virtually gave the game away.Sikandar Raza hit an unbeaten 67 and Sean Williams 65 as Zimbabwe stunned the home side in the first one-day international to be held in Galle for 17 years. The day did not start badly for the home side. Kusal Mendis blasted 86 off 80 balls as Sri Lanka plundered runs off the Zimbabwe attack on a slow pitch.Upul Tharanga hit 79 and Danushka Gunathilaka 60 after Mathews won the toss and chose to bat. From there, Zimbabwe, one of the minnows of world cricket, went off script.Mire, who also bowled seven overs before coming out as opening batsman, hit 14 fours and his third-wicket stand of 161 with Williams put the African side well on the way to victory.Raza claimed the winning runs with a six to compound the humiliation.Raza praised Zimbabwes selectors for keeping faith with the squad.A lot of cricket behind us has helped us pull off this fantastic win, he said.I kept telling myself that this had to be for Solomon. For someone to play in this kind of heat after bowling his heart out, that was sensational. I wanted to do it for him.Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer said the win was a huge confidence booster. To chase down a score like that, to post our first win here was amazing.Cremer called Mire a real asset to the team, not just with the bat but also with the ball. Hes lovely to watch.Zimbabwe still have four one day internationals and a Test to face in Sri Lanka, who have faced increasing jibes over recent performances. We just want to take it one game at a time, said Cremer. We can hopefully carry this confidence forward.

Who facilitated the release of Raymond Davis?

Posted:

(Web Desk) - Raymond Davis, an ex-CIA spy and US citizen in Pakistan, has wrote a memoir of his experiences in the country with special reference to his arrest and US-Pak diplomatic tensions that arose afterwards with his release. Till the very end, Davis has maintained his stance in the book saying, “I don’t regret shooting those two men in Lahore. I believe it was an appropriate response to a life-threatening situation. But I do regret the turmoil it created.”In 2011, Davis had reportedly gunned down two young men at Lahore’s Qurtaba Chowk. In his book named “The Contractor: How I Landed in a Pakistani Prison and Ignited a Diplomatic Crisis”, he talks about this 2011 Lahore incident, the imprisonment, diplomats from both sides on the bargaining table trying to get him out, and the foreign affairs crisis between the United States and Pakistan that followed. While explaining the whole matter, Davis reaffirmed that the two young boys Faizan and Faheem wanted to rob him and he killed them in self defence. He was then chased by traffic wardens who arrested him before imprisonment. While diplomats from the United States put pressure referring to his diplomatic immunity, Pakistani officials including then Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi opined the CIA spy didn’t enjoy such rights. Islamabad and Washington were on the verge of a tense battle. The main argument against US was Davis is an intelligence operative working freely in Pakistan and his crime should be dealt with in accordance with the crime laws of the country. His trial wascarried out under Islamic Shariah Law.However, Davis was pardoned in exchange for blood money. He had neither qualified for immunity nor his team had any diplomatic option left for the acquittal, rather a simple deal with the relatives of those two young boys resulted in his release. He was flown outside Pakistan immediately after the heirs told the court they had accepted monetary compensation to settle the case.Pasha was clearly committed to making sure that the deal was successful ... In a meeting of top Pakistani officials, both President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani tried to convince Qureshi to change his hardline stance, but Qureshi let it be known in a press conference the following day that he wasn’t going to budge, he claimed in his book.Davis credits then ISI chief General (retd) Ahmed Shuja Pasha, President Asif Zardari, PM Yousaf Raza Gilani and Pakistans ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani, Nawaz Sharif, John Kerry, attorney Peter Strasserand and others for his defending his case. He writes, In the end, no one individual should receive the credit for devising theplan. It was clearly a group effort.Having said that, Davis pointed out the law of blood money or diyat as the cause of his release which was explained to him by Carmela Conroy, the US consul general in Lahore. He writes, Carmela must have seen the fear in my eyes because she hurriedly continued. “There’s also diyat, also known as ‘blood money.’ In this case compensation gets paid to the victim or the victim’s heirs, and the accused goes free. That’s what’s going to happen here. The victims’ families are going to receive a sum ofmoney, then you’ll be getting released.” She paused as if to emphasize what she was about to say next. Ray, you’re getting out of here. The relations between both countries hit a new low when American forces carried out a raid on the compound in Abbottabad that left Osama bin Laden dead, several weeks after Davis arrival in the US. In the concluding chapter, he said, The onus was (now) on them (Pakistan) to explain how the world’s most-wanted terrorist had been living within their borders for six years without anyone knowing about it.The story was compiled by Umair Sohail

Japan plans to send man on moon by 2030

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan has revealed ambitious plans to put an astronaut on the Moon around 2030 in new proposals from the countrys space agency. This is the first time the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has said it aims to send an astronaut beyond the International Space Station, an agency spokeswoman told AFP on Friday. The idea is to first join a NASA-led mission in 2025 to build a space station in the moons orbit, as part of a longer-term effort by NASA to reach Mars.Tokyo hopes that contributing to the multinational mission and sharing Japanese technology will land it a coveted spot at the station, from which it could eventually send an astronaut to the Moon, the spokeswoman said. The plan was presented at an education ministry panel this week, with a more formal blueprint expected next year, according to public broadcaster NHK.The announcement comes as China and India develop their space programmes. In November, Chinas Shenzhou-11 spacecraft returned to Earth, bringing home two astronauts from the rising powers longest-ever orbital mission.Beijing has also unveiled illustrations of a Mars probe and rover it aims to send to the Red Planet at the end of the decade.NASA and other global space agencies are working hard on sending astronauts to Mars by the 2030s.In March, the US Congress passed a bill -- signed by President Donald Trump -- directing NASA to send a manned mission to Mars in 2033.
