Pakistan braces for a revival as World XI arrives

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - A World XI squad comprising 13 players from seven top cricket-playing nations landed in Lahore early Monday amid massive security, with Pakistan hoping the tour will end years of international isolation.Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi and other officials were present at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore to welcome the World XI squad.Pakistan has not hosted top-level international cricket -- barring five limited over matches against minnows Zimbabwe in 2015 -- since the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by terrorists in March 2009, killing eight people and injuring seven players and staff. The World XI, which will play three Twenty20 internationals from Tuesday, arrived around 2:00am Pakistan time (2100 GMT) with air surveillance and dozens of police vans in attendance as the team was whisked to their hotel. Both the hotel and stadium will be cordoned off with 9,000 police and paramilitary staff deployed during the next five days. The World XI is led by South African skipper Faf du Plessis and coached by former Zimbabwe batsman and ex-England coach Andy Flower.A fourteenth player, Samuel Badree of the West Indies, will arrive later Monday.Earlier on Sunday Malik Mohammad Khan, a spokesperson for the government of Punjab province, of which Lahore is the capital, said authorities were providing foolproof security for the World XI with a big contingent of security officials deployed.Parts of the city near the stadium will be cordoned off, with shops and restaurants around the venue to be shut for the duration of the series while spectators will have to pass through multiple security checkpoints.Since the 2009 attack Pakistan have been forced to play most of their home games in the United Arab Emirates -- with the Pakistan Cricket Board complaining they have incurred losses of around $120 million. But security has dramatically improved across Pakistan in the last two years, signalling hopes for the slow revival of international sport in the country. In March, Pakistan successfully hosted the Pakistan Super League Twenty20 final in Lahore with English players Dawid Malan and Chris Jordan, West Indies Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels and South Africas Morne van Wyk and Zimbabwes Sean Ervine competing.

Root eyes 'special' Ashes triumph after Windies win

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root believes England have the capacity to do something special by retaining the Ashes in Australia, after they wrapped up a 2-1 Test series victory against West Indies at Lords on Saturday.A nine-wicket win inside three days at the home of cricket meant England had won both of Roots first two series as captain following a preceding 3-1 home triumph over South Africa.Saturdays success was effectively sealed by James Anderson taking his Test-best figures after all-rounder Ben Stokes starred with both ball and bat.Having become the first Englishman and only sixth bowler to reach the milestone of 500 Test wickets on Friday, Anderson went on to record innings figures of seven for 42 in a West Indies total of 177 all out. That left England requiring a mere 107 to win, with an unbroken partnership of 72 between Mark Stoneman and Tom Westley completing a comprehensive victory. This was Englands last Test before they begin the defence of the Ashes in Brisbane in November.A series win in Australia would see star batsman Root join a select group of post-World War II England captains -- Len Hutton, Ray Illingworth, Mike Brearley, Mike Gatting and Andrew Strauss -- to have led a side to Ashes glory Down Under. It has been great, said Root. Weve played some really good stuff this summer.England, though, suffered second-Test defeats in both the South Africa and West Indies series. There were two difficult weeks, but what is most pleasing is the resilience and character to come back from both of those with two extra strong performances, said Root. That is great to see for what is going to be a very challenging winter. However, doubts remain over whether opener Stoneman, number three Westley and number five Dawid Malan are the right men to fill their respective spots in a top order where the only nailed-on places belong to Alastair Cook and Root himself.Plenty of challenges lie ahead -- but with those challenges come great opportunities, said Root.We should not be afraid of going over there (to Australia), performing at our best and (trying to) do something special. We have all the attributes to go down there and put in a strong performance.Anderson, who starred in a 3-1 Ashes win in Australia in 2011/11, has long been regarded as ideally suited to swing-friendly English conditions and had an outstanding season with the 35-year-old Lancashire paceman taking 39 wickets in just seven Tests.Putting in his career-best figures shows he is still desperate to kick on and do more great things in this game, said Root.He is one of most skilful bowlers I have ever played with. The control he has when the ball is doing a minimal amount, or when it is hooping around, is remarkable. This summer has been unreal for him, but I wouldnt say Im surprised by how it has turned out.For West Indies, whose attention now turns to the limited-overs leg of their tour, the highlight of the Test series was a five-wicket win at Headingley that squared things up at 1-1 just days after they had suffered an innings thrashing at Edgbaston. The Headingley match featured twin hundreds from Shai Hope -- his first centuries in Test cricket -- and the 23-year-old underlined his promise with two more impressive innings in difficult conditions at Lords.I think weve got a lot to be proud of, said West Indies captain Jason Holder.Credit must go to our bowlers and obviously Shai was outstanding in this entire series, and Kraigg (Brathwaite) did a hell of a job too -- especially at Headingley. But the catching by both sides was poor, with all-rounder Holder adding: We let ourselves down by dropping quite a few chances and giving good players two opportunities to bat.In international cricket, theyll make you pay for that. But Im extremely proud, and cant fault the guys for their effort.

Bayliss defiant ahead of Ashes as England problems persist

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England coach Trevor Bayliss has insisted his side wont be heading Down Under to make up the numbers when their Ashes defence in Australia begins in November. And following Englands nine-wicket win over West Indies at Lords on Saturday, which saw them end their home Test season with a 2-1 series victory, Bayliss said his native Australias line-up was far from stable.England, however, started this season with major doubts over positions number two, three and five in their batting order and those problems remain as they consider the composition of their Ashes squad.A strong middle-order featuring Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali may continue to bail England out of run-scoring trouble but that could prove wishful thinking in Australia.Alastair Cook has had 12 different opening partners since former England captain Andrew Strauss retired in 2012.Mark Stoneman, the man currently alongside Cook, averages 30 in Test cricket and he is likely to be walking out to bat with the former captain in the Ashes series opener at Brisbane.England could go back to Haseeb Hameed who made his debut in India last year and averaged 43 in six innings before injury ruled him out of the rest of the tour. The 20-year-old Lancashire opener did not play a Test this season after a poor start to the domestic county campaign but Hameed has yet to fail at Test level.Westleys 44 not out in pursuit of a victory target of just 107 on Saturday may not have been enough to secure his Ashes spot after a run of five single-figure scores.Dawid Malan made two fifties against West Indies and showed a willingness to graft his way out of trouble.Thats the big question. Whether the three guys we have been speaking about all summer (Stoneman, Westley and Malan) have done enough, said Bayliss.I am sure they would have loved as much as we would for them to come out and make a couple of hundreds and then theres nothing to talk about. They have shown that they are good enough, but are they good enough for long enough -- are they tough enough especially for an Ashes series? One solution to the issue of number three, would be to promote England captain Joe Root from his berth at four.Joe is comfortable batting at four, said Bayliss.I think he will end up at three at some stage in the future because he is by far our best player and I believe that is where your best player should be.Roots first two series as England captain both ended in victory after he started with a 3-1 win over South Africa.Bayliss said the Yorkshireman had done fantastically well as skipper, adding: He is a positive player and that shows through in his captaincy.James Anderson, who took his Test-best figures of seven for 42 at Lords on Saturday -- a haul that included his 500th Test wicket -- had a brilliant season. His 39 wickets in seven Tests at just 14 apiece were the most by an England bowler in a home season since Jim Laker back in 1956.But the Kookaburra ball used in Australia is unlikely to swing as much as the Dukes.Anderson took 24 wickets at 26 apiece during Englands victorious 2010/11 Ashes tour but a mere 14 at 44 during a humiliating 5-0 defeat in 2013/14.Nevertheless, Bayliss said: The ball will swing a bit early particularly somewhere like Brisbane -- we have a day/night game (in Adelaide) and it might swing around a bit there too.I think when you get to Australia the main thing is your consistency and accuracy. He (Anderson) gets wickets but doesnt go for a lot of runs. But even Anderson needs support from his fielders and the fact England dropped 16 catches in three Tests against West Indies is a cause for concern. The catching has been terrible, especially in the last couple of Tests, said Bayliss.Dropping easy catches is usually down to concentration.

England's Anderson on top of the world rankings

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - James Andersons career-best figures have catapulted the England paceman to the top of the International Cricket Councils Test bowling rankings. The swing bowler produced something of a clinic as he took seven for 42 against West Indies -- a haul that included his 500th Test wicket -- in Englands nine-wicket win at Lords on Saturday that saw them to a 2-1 series victory.Anderson has now overtaken India left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja to regain the number one spot he most recently held in August last year. The 35-year-old Anderson is also the oldest bowler to top the rankings since Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan in July 2009, a feat that ends a memorable season for the Lancashire star who took 39 wickets in seven Tests for England this home season at an average of just 14.1Englands series win over West Indies kept them third in the Test standings, behind India and South Africa.

Russian strikes kill 34 civilians in Syria's Deir Ezzor: monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Russian air strikes Sunday killed 34 civilians on ferries fleeing violence in Syrias eastern province of Deir Ezzor, where jihadists face separate assaults by US-backed forces and Russian-backed government troops, a monitor said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor initially reported 21 deaths but later raised the toll to 34, saying that more bodies have been found in the river Euphrates.Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said nine children were among those killed fleeing fighting and that dozens of people were wounded in the strikes. He said the raids targeted more than 40 ferries that had left Al-Boulil town southeast of Deir Ezzor city for the eastern shore of the river. The Observatory relies on a network of sources inside Syria, and says it determines whose planes carry out raids according to type, location, flight patterns and munitions used.Moscow intervened in Syria in September 2015 in support of its ally President Bashar al-Assad.Sundays reported raids came as Syrian troops with Russian air cover pressed an offensive against Islamic State group jihadists across Deir Ezzor province. On Saturday, government forces broke a nearly three-year jihadist siege of a Syrian airbase on the southern edges of Deir Ezzor city, the provincial capital.Assads troops advanced further Sunday, capturing Mount Tharda west of the military airport from IS as well as another mountain overlooking the city, the Observatory said.IS holdouts were still entrenched in southern parts of the city, the monitor said. The armys advances in the oil-rich province come as US-backed forces press their own assault on IS in Deir Ezzor.- A strategic prize -=====================The province borders Iraq and is a strategic prize for both the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance and government troops. The SDF announced on Saturday it had begun clearing IS from areas east of the Euphrates, which cuts diagonally across the province.By Sunday, fighters from the SDFs Deir Ezzor Military Council (DEMC) had seized much of the provinces northeast, the Observatory said. They seized control of a hilltop seven kilometres (four miles) from the eastern banks of the Euphrates, across the river from Deir Ezzor city, Abdel Rahman said.He attributed the speedy gains to the fact that eastern parts of Deir Ezzor are desert and not densely populated. The DEMCs advance is being backed by the US-led coalition battling IS in Iraq and Syria since 2014.The coalition, the SDF, Syrias government and Russia have agreed on a de-confliction line in northeastern Syria to prevent the two offensives from clashing.Regime forces were on Sunday also locked in fierce clashes with IS southwest of the city as they prepared a push into neighbourhoods still held by the jihadists, the Observatory said.According to the War Media channel operated by regime ally Hezbollah, Syrian troops seized full control of the 450-kilometre (280-mile) road linking the capital to Deir Ezzor for the first time in four years. The Syrian army and its allies now control the entire international highway between Deir Ezzor and Damascus, through the cities of Al-Sukhna and Palmyra, it said, referring to other central Syrian cities recaptured from IS.The international highway had been unusable in the area between Al-Sukhna and Deir Ezzor for four years.Since 2014, IS has held about 60 percent of the city and much of the surrounding province.Syrias conflict erupted in 2011 with protests demanding that Assad step down, but it has since evolved into a complex, multi-front war.More than 330,000 people have been killed and millions have fled their homes, but international attempts to reach a peace deal have faltered.
