Gayle return 'huge boost' for West Indies: Holder

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - West Indies captain Jason Holder has backed the returning Chris Gayle to make a big impact in the one-day international series against England starting this week.Tuesdays fixture at Old Trafford, the first of a five-match ODI series, is set to be powerhouse opening batsman Gayles first at this level since the 2015 World Cup -- where he made the first double century in the competitions history, smashing a blistering 215 against Zimbabwe in Canberra.A protracted dispute with Cricket West Indies chiefs kept the 37-year-old Jamaica left-hander on the sidelines of the international game for more than two years. But he returned to Twenty20 international action on his home ground of Sabina Park, Kingston, in July. And he showed he had lost none of his ability to score rapidly with a blazing 40 off 21 balls as World Twenty20 champions West Indies beat England by 21 runs in the lone Twenty20 of their tour at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.Gayle has scored more than 9,000 runs, including 22 hundreds, in 269 ODIs at a strike rate of 85.11.Holder welcomed his impending return to the ODI format by telling reporters at Old Trafford on Monday: Its obviously a huge boost. The calibre of player Chris is, you can expect really good things from him.He showed some form in the T20 game and had some good form in our CPL (Caribbean Premier League) competition recently concluded, the all-rounder added.Im really looking forward to having him back. He seems up for the challenge, he seems upbeat and really happy to be back. Im looking forward to good things from Chris.Holder, not in the Twenty20 squad after leading West Indies in a 2-1 Test series loss to England earlier in the tour, said his side could take some confidence from a win at Chester-le-Street, where they overcame cold and wet conditions to record a convincing victory over England in a repeat of last years World Twenty20 final in Kolkata. That (Saturdays) result should give is a bit of momentum, albeit a T20 game, said Holder. We are professional athletes, we know what to expect here in English conditions. A few of the guys have played here before, a few played the T20 game coming into this one.The Barbados all-rounder added: From all reports it was difficult in Durham with the wet outfield but its something weve grown to expect and youve just got to adapt and adjust to it.West Indies will need to win the upcoming series either 5-0 or 4-0 with a tie or a no-result if they are to gain direct entry into the 2019 World Cup in England.A failure to do so would mean West Indies, the 1975 and 1979 World Cup winners, cannot overtake Sri Lanka, currently eighth in the ODI rankings.Only the top seven sides, apart from hosts England, currently fourth, as of September 30 will qualify directly for the 50-over showpiece event in 2019.Teams that do not gain direct entry will get another shot through a qualifying tournament. The guys are up for the challenge. Weve obviously got some new faces coming back into the side and its exciting times for our cricket, said Holder. We are still at a stage where we are looking to rebuild and hopefully these guys coming back can bring a lot of experience and expertise to what we are doing.

Morgan urges Stokes to 'be himself' as Samuels clash looms

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan has urged Ben Stokes to retain his competitive approach despite the prospect of facing longstanding antagonist Marlon Samuels in the first one-day international against West Indies.Tuesdays match at Old Trafford is set to feature the latest chapter in the fiery relationship between Stokes and Samuels.West Indies batsman Samuels saluted Stokes off the pitch in a Test in Grenada two years ago, a gesture that riled the England all-rounder.The pair then exchanged words during West Indies 2016 World Twenty20 final win over England in Kolkata -- a match where Samuels, who made 85 not out, was at the other end when Carlos Brathwaite hit four successive sixes off Stokes in the last over to give the Caribbean side the title.I want Ben to be himself, Morgan told reporters at Old Trafford on Monday.I want Ben to get into the contest of a game. Its part and parcel of his character and part and parcel of getting the best out of Ben Stokes.Ive no worries at all.Following the World Twenty20 final, Samuels said Stokes was a nervous lad.But Samuels indicated he would be on his best behaviour in England, having not featured during the recent Test series because of a dispute with West Indies cricket chiefs and a clash with the Caribbean Premier League.Im going to come to England and be a good boy, at least for the start, the 36-year-old Jamaican told the Guardian in an interview earlier this month. As long as he (Stokes) keeps quiet, I wont start anything, Samuels added.Tuesdays match has been given an extra twist by the knowledge Stokes is now just one demerit point away from a ban under the International Cricket Councils code of conduct that could rule him out of two ODIs or one Test, whichever comes sooner. That has led to suggestions Stokes should get himself banned early during the West Indies one-dayers so he can start Englands upcoming Ashes Test series in Australia with a clean slate. To be honest, I havent thought about it, said Morgan. Maybe Ill speak to Rooty (England Test captain Joe Root) about it.Morgan added he hoped Stokes could transfer his red-ball bowling form into the ODI arena after the Durham paceman took a Test-best six for 22 in Englands series-clinching victory over West Indies at Lords this month.Hes almost like having an out and out seam bowler, particularly after bowling like that at Lords. His confidence is quite high, said Morgan.Meanwhile West Indies captain Jason Holder played down talk of another Samuels-Stokes flare-up, saying he hoped for a smooth-sailing series.Marlon is one competitive guy, added Holder. Whatever Marlon needs to do to get fired up, Im quite happy for him to do, as long as its in the spirit of the game and doesnt go too overboard.Tuesdays match will also be Englands first ODI since a crushing eight-wicket Champions Trophy semi-final defeat by eventual tournament winners Pakistan in Cardiff in June.Morgan, reflecting on the lessons learnt from that loss, said: The most significant thing for us is to get the ball moving off the straight with the seam bowlers during that middle period when the ball gets a bit older.Pakistan did it really well and again in the final. Its certainly something we need to improve on.West Indies require a 5-0 series win -- or 4-0 with a tie or no-result -- over Morgans men if they are to gain direct entry to the 2019 World Cup in England.Otherwise the 1975 and 1979 champions face the indignity of a qualifying competition. But West Indies did enjoy a 21-run Twenty20 victory over England in Durham on Saturday. Its not going to be an easy task, but its not impossible, said Holder. That win in Durham from the T20 team has given the guys a boost.Hopefully we can run on the back of that and bring it into this series.

Bairstow to open for England in 1st Windies ODI

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Jonny Bairstow will open for England in the first one-day international against West Indies, captain Eoin Morgan announced Monday.Tuesdays match at Manchesters Old Trafford is Englands first ODI since their Champions Trophy semi-final defeat by eventual tournament winners Pakistan in Cardiff in June. That match saw regular ODI opener Jason Roy dropped after a run of low scores, with Bairstow making 43 after being brought in at the top of the order.Surrey batsman Roy was out for a golden duck in Saturdays lone Twenty20 international against West Indies at Chester-le-Street and Morgan confirmed Test wicket-keeper Bairstow would open on Tuesday.Jonny is going to open with Alex Hales, Morgan told reporters at Old Trafford. We feel Jonny deserves a chance. Hes been waiting in the wings for quite a while now. This is an opportunity to make the opening position his.Bairstows innings was one of the few crumbs of comfort England could take from a convincing eight-wicket defeat by Pakistan at Cardiffs Sophia Gardens.England won 3-0 in a limited overs series in the Caribbean in March and were 2-1 victors on home soil in a recent Test campaign against West Indies. But neither of those contests featured the likes of star batsmen Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, now back in the fold after a bitter dispute with Cricket West Indies officials.Theyre a strong outfit, (and) obviously have some additions, changes from the Test team -- so theyre not a side we take lightly, said Morgan.A lot of our focus over the last couple of years has been on ourselves.I think to make that extra step, learning on from the Champions Trophy, this series for us is about producing consistent performances.

India, South Africa closer to tour agreement

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - South Africa and India are believed to be close to an agreement on a schedule for a tour of South Africa in January and February.According to the ESPN Cricinfo website, it is expected that the first of a possible four Test matches will start on January 5 or 6, three or four days later than South Africas traditional preferred start on the January 2 holiday.Cricket South Africa communications manager Altaaf Kazi confirmed that negotiations were advanced. We are engaging with them and are planning for a full tour, he said. The original plan was for four Tests, three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.Cricket South Africa wanted the first Test to start on December 26 but India have a home series against Sri Lanka, ending on December 24, and want to spend time in South Africa, including the playing of a warm-up match, before the start of a Test series.Negotiations have been complicated by the fact that Australia will be playing four Test matches in South Africa, starting on March 1, which makes the time frame for the India tour a tight one. There has been speculation that the India Test series may be reduced to three matches.Cricket South Africa have announced that despite the late arrival of India, there will be a December 26 Boxing Day Test although no opponent has yet been named.

Eiffel Tower starts work on anti-terror upgrade

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Works began Monday to boost security at the Eiffel Tower as an anti-terrorism measure, city hall said, with bulletproof glass walls set to go up around the worlds most visited monument. The changes come after a string of jihadist attacks in the French capital over the past two years in which more than 200 people have died.A bulletproof glass wall will be installed around the monuments gardens under the 30-million-euro ($36-million), nine-month works, the citys tourism chief, Jean-Francois Martins, told AFP.Visited by six to seven million people each year, the landmark already has a permanent police patrol. But Paris councillors voted unanimously in March to boost its security due to the particularly high terrorist threat.Last month a 19-year-old former psychiatric patient leapt over a security barrier at the tower wielding a knife, saying he wanted to attack a soldier. Some 7,000 troops have been deployed under an anti-terrorism operation known as Sentinelle, patrolling streets and guarding tourist hotspots, since the jihadist attack at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in January 2015.Martins said the renovations will not disrupt visitors arrival in any way and that tourists would still be able to walk up to the tower for free, after passing through security checks.A two-year project to repaint the 128-year-old wrought-iron tower will kick off in 2018, as well as refurbishment of its elevators, which will take two years longer. The building of a new reception centre will start in 2021 and last for two years, Martins said. But he indicated that controversial plans for an underground centre with a shopping gallery have been scrapped.City officials are trying to upgrade the site without denting visitor numbers as Paris prepares to host the 2024 Olympic Games. In total 300 million euros have been put aside to improve visitors experience of the UNESCO World Heritage site over the next 15 years, half of it for maintenance.

Trump, Xi agree on 'maximising pressure' on North Korea: White House

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping committed to maximizing pressure on North Korea, the White House said Monday, amid an escalating crisis over Pyongyangs ballistic and nuclear weapons programs. In a phone call the two men discussed North Koreas continued defiance of the international community and its efforts to destabilize Northeast Asia, the White House said. The two leaders committed to maximizing pressure on North Korea through vigorous enforcement of United Nations Security Council resolutions.Trump is currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly but Xi -- who has a major Communist Party congress that will cement his leadership for the next five years -- is not attending the event.Trump is expected to make his first presidential visit to China in early November.September has seen a significant ratcheting up of already sky-high tensions with Pyongyang.Already North Korea has conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test and staged an intermediate-range missile test over Japan. The UN Security Council last week imposed a fresh set of sanctions, though Washington toned down its original proposals to secure support from China and Russia. The US president has not ruled out a military option, which could leave millions of people in the South Korean capital -- and 28,500 US soldiers stationed in the South -- vulnerable to potential retaliatory attack. The US flew four F-35B stealth fighter jets and two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula on Monday in a blunt show of force.Chinas official news agency, Xinhua, said that during the phone conversation Xi also expressed sympathy and solicitude to Trump and the American people for the hurricane attacks on the United States over the past few days. The two leaders also exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Smokers with HIV far more likely to die of lung cancer

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - People who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus and who smoke are far more likely to die from lung cancer than HIV, researchers said Monday.Having HIV and using tobacco may together accelerate the development of lung cancer, warned the report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine.Smoking reduces life expectancy among people living with HIV -- and undergoing antiretroviral therapy to keep their disease at bay -- more than HIV itself, it added. The findings are of particular concern because smoking is so common among people with HIV.The prevalence of smokers among the population of people with HIV is 40 percent, about twice the rest of the US population.Smoking and HIV are a particularly bad combination when it comes to lung cancer, said lead author Krishna Reddy, a doctor at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.Smoking rates are extraordinarily high among people with HIV, and both smoking and HIV increase the risk of lung cancer.Almost 25 percent of people who adhere well to anti-HIV medications but continue to smoke will die from lung cancer, said the findings.People with HIV who take antiviral drugs and also smoke are from six to 13 times more likely to die from lung cancer than from HIV/AIDS, it added. But there is hope for those who manage to quit.Among smokers who quit at age 40, only about six percent will die of lung cancer, according to the study, which is based on projections using a computer model.Quitting smoking is one of the most important things that people with HIV can do to improve their health and live longer, said co-author Travis Baggett, also of Massachusetts General Hospital.Nearly 60,000 of the 644,2000 people aged 20-64 living with HIV and receiving care are expected to die from lung cancer by age 80 if smoking habits do not change.
