Ton-up Bairstow leaves Windies facing World Cup qualifiers

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Jonny Bairstow struck a maiden one-day international hundred as England condemned West Indies to a seven-wicket defeat at Old Trafford on Tuesday that means the twice former champions can no longer gain direct entry to the 2019 World Cup.West Indies, the 1975 and 1979 World Cup winners, had to take this five-match series 5-0 or 4-0 with a tie or no result if they were to avoid the indignity of a qualifying competition for the next edition in England in two years time. But a total of 204 for nine, in a series-opener reduced to 42 overs per side after a wet outfield delayed the start by two hours, never looked enough.England finished on 210 for three, winning with a mammoth 67 balls to spare.Bairstow, who justified his retention at the top of the order, was exactly 100 not out -- his first century in 28 matches at this level coming six years after his ODI debut.Ben Stokes, who ended the contest with a six off spinner Ashley Nurse, was 23 not out.Test wicket-keeper Bairstow, who made 43 as an opener in Englands last ODI -- an eight-wicket Champions Trophy semi-final defeat by eventual winners Pakistan in Cardiff in June -- kept his place at the top of the order instead of Jason Roy, who was out for a golden duck in West Indies T20 victory in Durham on Saturday.Bairstow was quickly into his stride, driving West Indies captain Jason Holder through the covers for the first of 11 fours in 97 balls.Together with Yorkshire team-mate Joe Root he put on 125 in 19 overs for the second wicket before Englands Test captain played-on to Kesrick Williams for 54.But Bairstow, whose previous highest ODI score was a match-winning 83 not out against New Zealand in Durham two years ago, went to his century with a hard-run three off Nurse despite slipping. His century came just over a month after Bairstow was out for 99 in an Old Trafford Test against South Africa. It seems a long time ago that I made my debut in ODI cricket, Bairstow told Sky Sports. When you get a chance you try to take it but with the strength in depth that weve got in the England side at the moment, the opportunities are few and far between. He added: Weve got a serious belief within the side that, although we didnt do ourselves justice in the Champions Trophy, that going forward to the World Cup and the rest of this series we need to rectify that.Earlier, West Indies innings in this day/night clash fell away after a breezy opening stand of 45 between Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis.Stokes took three for 43 with only West Indies captain Jason Holders 41 not out ensuring the tourists got past 200.Holders decision to bat first meant big-hitting opener Gayle was straight into the action for his first ODI since the 2015 World Cup following a dispute with Caribbean cricket chiefs.Gayle should have been out for a third-ball duck when he edged a drive off Chris Woakes only for second slip Root to drop the catch.Jamaica left-hander Gayle cashed in by driving David Willey for two sixes in an over. But off-spinner Moeen Ali broke the opening stand when with just his third ball when Lewis pulled a long hop to Alex Hales at square leg.West Indies were soon 53 for two when Gayle, whose 37 had come off just 27 balls including two fours and three sixes, skyed a drive off Woakes and Root, atoning for his earlier error, held an excellent catch over his shoulder running back.Bairstow, playing as a specialist batsman in this match, then held a leaping catch at deep midwicket to dismiss dangerman Shai Hope (35).West Indies, who failed to qualify for this years Champions Trophy tournament in England, continued to struggle before Holder hit out.The series continues at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka on Tuesday appointed former Test player Graeme Labrooy as the chief selector, days before a two-Test series kicks off in the UAE against Pakistan.Labrooys appointment comes after a selection panel led by batting great Sanath Jayasuriya resigned en masse following the teams humiliating 3-0 whitewash at home to India in a recent three-match Test series.Sri Lanka also went on to lose a five-match one-day international series and a one-off T20 game against India. The new selectors will begin their term with the selection of the Test squad to take on Pakistan in their tour of UAE (United Arab Emirates) commencing early next week, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement. The 53-year-old Labrooy played nine Tests for Sri Lanka, taking 27 wickets at an economy rate of 3.31.Gamini Wickremasinghe, Jeryl Woutersz, Sajith Fernando and Asanka Gurusinha are the other members of the new panel. The Test series with Pakistan beginning September 28 will see Sri Lanka play their first ever day-and-night game. The teams are also due to play five ODIs and three T20s, one of which is tentatively scheduled to be played in Lahore, Pakistan.Sri Lanka are placed seventh among the 10 Test playing nations and Pakistan sixth.

Bangladesh's Rubel denied entry to South Africa

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Pace bowler Rubel Hossain was prevented from boarding a flight to South Africa with the Bangladesh tour squad after the airline claimed he did not have immigration clearance, officials said Tuesday. There is a new a provision that the passenger needs to have some sort of OK to Board clearance from his ultimate destination, Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury told AFP after Rubel, 27, was refused a boarding pass at Dhaka airport on Saturday. We are in touch with Cricket South Africa and hopefully the matter will be resolved soon. He will fly to South Africa on the first available flight once the matter is resolved, he said. The rest of the 14-member Bangladesh squad has already arrived in South Africa ahead of the first Test starting at Potchefstroom on September 28.The second and final Test will be played in Bloemfontein staring on October 6.Rubel is now likely to miss the teams three-day warm-up match at Benoni near Johannesburg which begins on Thursday.Chowdhury claimed Rubels immigration clearance had nothing to do with a previous criminal allegation against the fast bowler. In 2014, Rubels former girlfriend and former actress Naznin Akter Happy had made a rape allegation against him, prompting police to detain him for several days.A Dhaka court in May 2015 rejected the rape case against Rubel after police said there was no evidence against the bowler.I dont think it is the reason for him not to get the immigration clearance, said Chowdhury. His name is very common. Maybe someone else with the same name has some problem which created this problem, he said.Rubel has taken 32 wickets from 24 Tests with one five-wicket haul.Bangladesh will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s during their month-long tour, their first to South Africa since 2008.

Holder gives Windies hope in delayed England ODI

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - West Indies captain Jason Holder led from the front with 41 not out in his sides 204 for nine against England in the first one-day international at Old Trafford on Tuesday.Holders men have to win this five-match series 5-0 or 4-0 with a tie or no-result if they are to qualify directly for the 2019 World Cup in England. The no-result part of that equation started to look a possibility when, despite bright sunshine, a wet outfield saw the umpires delay the scheduled start by two hours even though the sun was shining. In a match reduced to 42 overs per side, West Indies slumped to 160 for seven and were in danger of being dismissed for a lower score than the 176 the World Twenty20 champions managed in their T20 victory against England in Durham on Saturday. But Holder, who won the toss, at least gave his bowlers some sort of a target to defend in a 33-ball innings featuring five fours.Rival all-rounder Ben Stokes led Englands attack with three for 43 but his nine overs also included two no-balls -- one for height smashed by Holder for four in the last over -- and four wides.Holders decision to bat first meant big-hitting opener Chris Gayle was straight into the action for his first ODI since the 2015 World Cup following a dispute with Caribbean cricket chiefs.Gayle should have been out for a third-ball duck when he edged a drive off Chris Woakes only for Joe Root, Englands Test captain, to drop the catch at second slip. The Jamaica left-hander cashed in by driving David Willey for two soaring sixes in an over. But Moeen Ali ended a first-wicket stand worth 45 when, with just hid third ball, Evin Lewis (11) powerfully pulled a long hop to Alex Hales at square leg.West Indies were soon 53 for two when Gayle, whose 37 had come off just 27 balls including two fours and three sixes, skyed a drive off Woakes and Root, atoning for his earlier error, held an excellent catch over his shoulder running back.Shai Hope, who had been West Indies outstanding batsman in their recent 2-1 Test series defeat by England, and the returning Marlon Samuels, like Gayle back in the ODI side after a falling out with officials, steadied the innings with a third-wicket partnership of 53 in a relatively sedate 15 overs as the ball often plugged in the outfield.Hope, however, fell for 35 when he pulled Stokes hard and flat only for Test wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow, playing as a specialist batsman in this match, to hold an excellent leaping catch at deep midwicket.Stokes then got the better of longstanding antagonist Samuels when the batsman was caught behind down the legside on review for a subdued 17 off 46 balls.West Indies, who have lost 12 of their last 13 completed ODIs against England, found runs hard to come by, with leg-spinner Adil Rashid taking two for 31.But Holder, who hit Willey to the long-on rope, gave the innings some much-needed impetus.

'Potentially catastrophic' Maria eyes Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico

Posted:

POINTE-A-PITRE (AFP) - Hurricane Maria headed towards the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Tuesday, with the US National Hurricane Center warning of a potentially catastrophic impact as it battered the eastern Caribbean.Maria is forecast to remain an extremely dangerous Category 4 or 5 hurricane while it approaches the British and US territories late Tuesday, the NHC said.Arriving just as islanders in the region are struggling to recover from devastating Hurricane Irma which struck earlier this month, Maria claimed its first victim in the French territory of Guadeloupe, where two other people were missing. The person was killed by a falling tree as powerful winds whipped the archipelago, authorities said, while two more disappeared when their boat went missing in the storm. On neighbouring Dominica, premier Roosevelt Skerrit posted on Facebook that there were initial reports of widespread devastation and that the roof of his own home had been blown off.We have lost all what money can buy and replace, he said. The airport and ports have been closed on the tropical island of 72,000 people.St Martin, a French-Dutch island that was among the worst hit by Irma with 14 dead, was under a maximum violet alert, with people ordered to stay indoors.A similar measure was in place in the British Virgin Islands. Our islands are extremely vulnerable right now, the territorys premier Orlando Smith said in a statement, warning that the storm could turn debris left by Irma into dangerous projectiles.- Everything is shaking -Guadeloupe was serving as a base for aid flights to Irma-hit French territories after the hurricane, and there were fears that major damage there could hamper the relief operation.Authorities said there were few reports of damage to buildings so far, though several areas around the largest city Pointe-a-Pitre were flooded and fallen trees were blocking many roads. Some 40 percent of households in the territory of 400,000 are without power.Everything around me is shaking, former French minister Victorin Lurel told BFMTV from his home in the south of the island. The Dominican Republic, whose east coast was battered by Irma, ordered citizens in part of the north to evacuate ahead of Marias arrival.St Kitts and Nevis, the British island of Montserrat, Culebra and Vieques are also on alert.- Preparing for the worst -Britain, France and the Netherlands boosted resources for the Caribbean ahead of the storm, after facing accusations that they were ill-prepared for the damage done by Irma in their overseas territories. We are planning for the unexpected, we are planning for the worst, said Chris Austin, head of a UK military task force set up to deal with Irma.France said 110 more soldiers would be deployed to the region after widespread complaints of looting and lawlessness on St Martin after Irma.Building supplies were hurriedly flown in to help islanders repair roofs torn off by Irma as Maria approached.- Hurricane series -Irma left around 40 people dead altogether in the Caribbean before churning west and pounding Florida, where the death toll stood at 50 Monday. It broke records when it whipped up winds of 295 kilometres per hour for more than 33 hours straight.French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in New York where he is attending the UN General Assembly, said the lethal sequence of hurricanes is one of the direct consequences of global warming. The French leader said he had spoken to US President Donald Trump about the issue earlier Tuesday.Macron hosted Trump in Paris in July when he sought to persuade the US leader to reconsider his decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord. Many scientists are convinced that megastorms such as Irma, and Harvey before it, are intensified by the greater energy they can draw from oceans that are warming as a result of climate change.

Britain suspends Myanmar military's training

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Britain said Tuesday it had suspended its educational training courses for the Myanmar military due to the ethnic violence in Rakhine state.London said it had deep concern about human rights abuses and would not be resuming the military courses unless there was an acceptable resolution to the ongoing Rohingya crisis.Communal violence has torn through Myanmars western Rakhine state since Muslim minority Rohingya militants staged deadly attacks on police posts on August 25.An army-led fightback has left scores dead and sent more than 420,000 Rohingya fleeing the mainly Buddhist country into neighbouring Bangladesh. The action the military are taking against the Rohingya people needs to stop, British Prime Minister Theresa May told the UKs Sky News in New York. There will be no further defence engagement or training of the Burmese military by the Ministry of Defence until theres a resolution of this issue. In London, a government spokesman said in a statement: In light of the ongoing violence in Burmas Rakhine state, the growing humanitarian crisis it has caused, and our deep concern about the human rights abuses that are taking place, we have decided to suspend the educational courses provided to the Burmese military until there is an acceptable resolution to the current situation. We call on the Burmese armed forces to take immediate steps to stop the violence in Rakhine and ensure the protection of all civilians, to allow full access for humanitarian aid and to facilitate the civilian governments implementation of the Rakhine Advisory Commissions recommendations in full. The year-long commission, led by former United Nations chief Kofi Annan, tasked with healing divisions between the Rohingya and local Buddhists, urged immediate action to heal the divide.Training a catastrophic misjudgementBritains junior foreign minister Mark Field has said the UK armed forces provided vocational courses, focused on language training, governance, accountability, ethics, human rights and international law to the Myanmar military.Exposing them to how modern militaries operate in a democracy is more effective than isolating them, he told parliament on September 5.Britain did not provide combat training, Field said. The UK is, and will remain, a very strong supporter of continuing the EU arms embargo on Myanmar, he added. Some 150 members of parliament wrote to Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on September 6 calling for the training programme to be suspended.Burma Campaign UK, which has been calling for an end to the training programme ever since it started in 2013, said it was incredible that the halt had taken so long to reach.Ending this training should have been a no-brainer, not something to dither over for three weeks while ethnic cleansing happens, said the groups director Mark Farmaner. He called the training a catastrophic misjudgement.A major rethink on policy is now needed and a return to putting human rights first, he said.

He started from September 9 and was stopped on September 11. Talking to media, Howard apologised to everyone who might have been offended by his act. He admitted that the girl he loved didnt come back, but it taught him a valuable lesson.
