Zuckerberg fires back at Trump over Facebook barb

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg fired back at US President Donald Trump on Wednesday after he accused the leading social network of being always anti-Trump.Zuckerberg rejected the notion, countering that Facebook is working to ensure free and fair elections with an online platform that does not favor one side over another.Zuckerbergs post at Facebook came after Trump accused the social network of bias in a morning tweet that read:Facebook was always anti-Trump.The Networks were always anti-Trump hence,Fake News, @nytimes(apologized) & @WaPo were anti-Trump. Collusion?Early morning Twitter tizzies have become a hallmark of Trumps presidency.Trump says Facebook is against him. Liberals say we helped Trump, Zuckerberg said in his post. Both sides are upset about ideas and content they dont like. Thats what running a platform for all ideas looks like.Facebook last week said that Russia-linked ads on the social network aimed at inflaming tensions around last years US presidential election will be given to Congress. The ads sought to sow discord among Americans on hot-button social issues.News of the decision came with word that Facebook is cracking down on efforts to use the leading social network to meddle with elections in the US or elsewhere. After the election, I made a comment that I thought the idea misinformation on Facebook changed the outcome of the election was a crazy idea, Zuckerberg said.Calling that crazy was dismissive and I regret it. This is too important an issue to be dismissive. He held firm that Facebook biggest role in the election was as a platform for candidates and citizens to communicated directly with one another regarding issues. The Senate Intelligence Committee has asked top tech companies Google, Facebook and Twitter to testify about Russian interference in US politics, a Senate aide confirmed Wednesday. The three internet and online social media giants are expected to appear on November 1 in an open hearing on the rising evidence that they were covertly manipulated in a campaign to help Donald Trump win the presidency.A core question in the congressional investigation is the extent to which online social networks were manipulated by Russian interests to covertly influence the US election, according to Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat and the ranking member of the House permanent select committee on intelligence.Russia has denied meddling with the US election. We will do our part to defend against nation states attempting to spread misinformation and subvert elections, Zuckerberg said.

Football: Cavani, Neymar on target as PSG outclass Bayern

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Edinson Cavani and Neymar both scored as Paris Saint-Germain claimed a convincing 3-0 victory over a disappointing Bayern Munich in their heavyweight Champions League clash in the French capital on Wednesday.PSG got off to a dream start as their other Brazilian summer signing Dani Alves gave them the lead inside 90 seconds at the Parc des Princes and they never looked back.Cavanis sweeping first-time strike just after the half-hour mark made it 2-0 before Neymar completed the scoring in the second half as Bayern went down to their heaviest defeat since losing to Barcelona by the same score in the semi-finals of this competition in May 2015.The result leaves the French club top of Group B with the maximum six points from two games, eight goals scored and none conceded. They are on course to win the section -- Bayern are level on three points with Celtic, who won at Anderlecht. For PSG this was a chance to measure themselves against one of the continents traditional powers in their biggest European match since their humiliating exit in Barcelona last season. In that regard the evening was a resounding success for Unai Emerys team, although the German club were some way short of their usual standards. The main thing is the three points, but its also important for me that the fans enjoy the match and seeing us win against a top-level side, said Emery. The match also saw Cavani and Neymar feature together for the first time since their disagreement over who should take a penalty in a league game against Lyon 10 days previously. This time there were no such disputes, and both men could celebrate contributing to the final outcome.I tried to put out the best possible team, and if I am criticised for that, Ill accept it, Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, who left Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben on the bench, told German Sky.The reason for the defeat is the first goal.Bayern have been among the critics of PSGs spending policy after a summer which saw them notably spend a world-record 222 million euros ($264 million) to sign Neymar from Barcelona. The Brazilian is reportedly being paid more than three million euros a month in Paris, and Bayern supporters had that in mind as they unfurled a pointed banner prior to kick-off.Complaining about match tickets costing 75 euros, it read: We are not Neymar. Ticket prices must be reasonable. It would have been easier to swallow paying that price if their team had won, but they fell behind in the second minute and never recovered.Neymar was allowed to cut in from the left before picking out Alves, who arrived unmarked in the area to take a touch and finish past Sven Ulreich, standing in for the injured Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal.Javi Martinez came closest to equalising for Ancelottis side with a half-volley from the edge of the area that was tipped over by Alphonse Areola, but the hosts were able to soak up the pressure and hit on the break.Cavani shot just wide after being fed by Kylian Mbappe and those two combined for the second goal in the 31st minute, Mbappe again teeing up Cavani for a superb first-time finish high into the net and his 10th goal this season.Bayern were stunned, and a combination of the MCN then almost brought a third, with Neymar laying off Mbappes pass for Cavani, whose effort was saved.Things did get worse for the visitors in the second half and they conceded again in the 63rd minute, with Neymar poking home from inside the six-yard box as Martinez failed to clear following good play by Mbappe. That was Neymars sixth goal for PSG and the 18th in total from the MCN, with the promise of many more to come.

Football: Batshuayi hands Chelsea deserved win at Atletico

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Michy Batshuayi struck a dramatic winner with the last kick of the game as Chelsea inflicted Atletico Madrids first defeat at their new Wanda Metropolitano home on Wednesday with a hugely impressive 2-1 Champions League victory.Substitute Batshuayis late intervention was just rewards for a dominant Chelsea display despite falling behind to Antoine Griezmanns penalty five minutes before half-time.Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata came back to haunt Atletico on his return to the Spanish capital by nodding home Eden Hazards tempting cross on the hour mark. And Batshuayi finished off a patient team move deep into stoppage time by turning home Marcos Alonsos cross at the near post.I am very pleased for my players because they deserve to play this type of game, but above all to play in this way with personality, said Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. You can win but doing it only by defending and counter-attacking there isnt the right satisfaction. To come here to play and want to understand where we are, the answer we had tonight was very positive.Victory ensured Chelsea take a commanding lead at the top of Group C with six points from their opening two games ahead of Roma, who moved onto four with a 2-1 win at Azerbaijani Champions League newcomers Qarabag earlier in the day.We have the kind of player in the team to do something: Alvaro, me, Michy, Willian, Hazard told BT Sport.Michy scores every time hes on the field He can score every time. Im so happy for him.By contrast, just a second defeat at home in 24 Champions League games under Diego Simeone means Atletico are in trouble after taking just one point from their opening two matches. We couldnt play our normal game. Our opponent had better intensity, was better tactically and technically, said Simeone. We were never comfortable and Chelseas victory was deserved because they played better. The presence of Diego Costa dominated much of the pre-match attention after he completed his prolonged return to Atletico from Chelsea on Tuesday.Despite the Brazilian-born strikers refusal to train with the Premier League champions this season it was all smiles as he greeted plenty of his former teammates in the tunnel before kick-off.However, Chelsea havent missed Costa so far this season as his replacement Morata has now scored seven goals in as many games.Hazard was starting for only the second time this season after breaking his ankle in June, but showed no signs of rust early on as he smacked a shot from outside the box off the post.Morata then forced Jan Oblak into a save as the Slovenian tipped his looping header over for a corner.Chelseas control forced Atletico boss Diego Simeone into a tactical reshuffle as he switched from his favoured 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and was rewarded as the hosts stemmed the Chelsea tide.David Luiz was at fault for Atleticos opener as he was penalised for hauling down Angel Correa from a corner.Griezmann kept his cool to smash the penalty past a former Atletico favourite Thibaut Courtois for his third goal in as many games at Atleticos new home. And for all Chelseas pressure, Atletico could easily have been two up at the break as Courtois parried Kokes fierce drive and Saul Niguez fired the rebound inches wide with the final kick of the half. The second period began in the same manner as the first with Chelsea on the front foot. But it took until the hour mark to level when Morata continued his scoring streak with his head with a flicked finish from Hazards pinpoint delivery.Cesc Fabregas should then have turned the game on its head when he somehow skewed wide from point-blank range following a goalmouth scramble.Morata had another chance to win the game as he showed impressive pace the sprint past Lucas Hernandez but pushed his finish inches past the far post 15 minutes from time. However, it was his replacement Batshuayi who proved the match winner with a smart finish after Chelsea work the ball masterfully around a tiring Atletico defence to create the opening.

Football: Lukaku and Martial lead Man Utd in CSKA rout

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial put CSKA Moscow to the sword as Manchester United took control of Champions League Group A with a ruthless 4-1 win on Wednesday.Lukaku scored twice at Moscows VEB Arena, taking his United tally to 10 goals in nine games, with Martial setting him up twice and netting a penalty before Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed victory. It was Uniteds first away win in the competition since November 2013 and with Basel thrashing Benfica in the other group game, it left Jose Mourinhos side three points clear at the top of the pool.We started so strong. We surprised them with out attitude, said Mourinho. They didnt look as good as they are, because of us.Lukaku has a great record. We know he is a very good player who can score lots of goals. He is surrounded by quality players. We are in a good position with four matches to play. After grinding out a 1-0 win at Southampton on Saturday, United were back to their fluid best in the Russian capital, the pace and movement of new strike partners Lukaku and Martial causing CSKA headaches all night.Having beaten Benfica in their opening game, CSKA were brought back to earth with a bump, although substitute Konstantin Kuchaev gave their fans something to cheer with a 90th-minute consolation goal. While the hosts had their moments, the encounter rather made a mockery of United manager Mourinhos eve-of-match claim that this was the strongest CSKA team he had ever encountered.Missing Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick through injury, Mourinho set United out in an unfamiliar 3-4-1-2 system, but the visitors took no time to find their mark.Paired in a new-look front two, Lukaku and Martial clicked instantly, combining to put United ahead in the fourth minute.Lukakus fine pass down the inside-left channel released Martial on the left and he checked inside before crossing to the back post, where Lukaku leapt to direct a strong header past Igor Akinfeev. After Akinfeev thwarted Mkhitaryan with his legs, Martial made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 18th minute following a foul on Mkhitaryan by Georgi Schennikov.Nine minutes later it was 3-0 as Vasili Berezutksi made a hash of clearing Martials low cross and Lukaku turned the ball home. The frustration for CSKA coach Viktor Goncharenko was that his side manged to procure several sights of goal at the other end, only to find David de Gea an imposing barrier. The United goalkeeper produced an excellent one-handed save to thwart Alan Dzagoev at 1-0 and tipped a powerful shot from Fedor Chalov over the ball at 2-0, as well as fielding attempts from Vitinho and Dzagoev.Akinfeev denied Lukaku his hat-trick early in the second half before more slipshod defending gifted United their fourth.Veteran centre-back Sergei Ignashevich gifted the ball straight to Ander Herrera, whose through-ball released Martial. The Frenchmans effort was parried by Akinfeev, but Mkhitaryan followed in to slot the rebound into the net.Akinfeev has now gone 45 games without a clean sheet in the competition proper, although his saves from substitutes Jesse Lingard and Matteo Darmian, allied to Kuchaevs late effort, spared CSKA further embarrassment. If I had a plan, it was ruined after the first goal that we conceded, said Goncharenko. Our level decreased greatly and Manchester had huge superiority over us. The class of the opponent was so great.

Football: Unlucky Coates gifts Barca win at Sporting

Posted:

LISBON (AFP) - Sebastian Coates scored an unfortunate second-half own goal to gift Barcelona a 1-0 victory away to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Uruguayan centre-back unwittingly deflected a Lionel Messi free-kick into his own net on 49 minutes to hand the Spaniards a second successive win to start Group D.The five-time European champions head the section with a maximum six points, ahead of both Sporting and Juventus on three, with Olympiakos yet to pick up a point.Ernesto Valverdes Barca have proved unstoppable in La Liga so far, winning their opening six matches to pull seven points clear of defending champions Real Madrid while vanquishing Juve in their first group game in Europe. We knew that to win we would have to suffer, Valverde told BeIN Sports Spain. We started strongly and dominated the first-half. After the goal we had 10 or 15 minutes where they pressed us and created some chances. But the Champions League is like this, you have to suffer to win.Messi drew level with former long-serving Barca captain Carles Puyol by making his 593rd appearance for the club -- trailing only Andres Iniesta (638) and Xavi (767).But the Argentine, one goal away from 100 in European competition, was largely subdued during a quiet first half in the Portuguese capital, with Cristiano Piccini flashing narrowly over for Sporting on 15 minutes.Sergi Roberto slipped in Luis Suarez as Barca finally threatened just before the half hour, but the Uruguayan was denied by Rui Patricio with the Portugal goalkeeper then holding well from a Messi header.Sportings Marco Acuna tested Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a low drive, but Messi gradually grew in influence as the interval approached. He weaved his way through the home defence on 43 minutes only to find an old foe, ex-Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao, slide across superbly to block his goal-bound effort.Sporting lost striker Seydou Doumbia to injury prior to the break, the Ivorian seemingly hurting himself following a theatrical fall on the edge of the Barca penalty area that earned him a yellow card.Dutch international Bas Dost, who scored a league-best 34 goals last campaign, replace Doumbia, but Barca broke the deadlock early into the second half as a Messi set-piece ricocheted about the Sporting six-yard box before trickling beyond Patricio. The Argentines curling delivery in from the right brushed two Sporting heads with Suarez then nodding the ball against Coates who could only watch in horror as it dribbled over the line.Suarez unleashed a snapshot straight at Patricio as Barca searched for a second, but the visitors were grateful to Ter Stegen as the Germany international thwarted Bruno Fernandes attempt for an equaliser.Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho went close to notching his third goal in four games late on when Patricio repelled the Brazilian, but Barca stretched their unbeaten run against Portuguese clubs to 15 matches dating back to 1987.

Putin heads to Turkey for talks on weapons deal, Syria

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday meets his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks on Syria and a key weapons deal, hoping to strengthen an increasingly active relationship that has troubled the West.Despite a regional rivalry that goes back to the Ottoman Empire and the Romanov dynasty, Russia and Turkey have been working closely since a 2016 reconciliation ended a crisis caused by the shooting down of a Russian war plane over Syria.Russia and Turkey are cooperating very tightly, Putins spokesman Dmitry Peskov said ahead of the one-day working visit by Putin to Ankara. Both Moscow and Ankara are pushing for the creation of four de-escalation zones in Syria to end the civil war that has raged since 2011.Meanwhile, Turkey, a NATO member, has signed a deal reportedly worth $2 billion to buy S-400 air defence systems from Russia, a move that has shocked its allies in the alliance. But while Putin and Erdogan are at pains to project an increasingly productive relationship, a shadow could be cast by Mondays independence referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan, which enraged Ankara but which Moscow stopped short of condemning.Turkey and Russia have been on opposing sides during the more than six years of war in Syria, with Russia the key backer of President Bashar al-Assad and Turkey supporting rebels seeking his ouster. But while Turkeys policy is officially unchanged, Ankara has notably cooled its attacks on the Damascus regime since its cooperation with Russia began to heat up.Economic cooperation is also beginning to flourish, with Russian tourists returning to Turkey and the two countries working on a Black Sea gas pipeline.Yet analysts say that while both countries share an interest in seeking to discomfort the West by showing off close cooperation, their relationship falls well short of a sincere strategic alliance.Relations between Turkey and Russia may appear to be friendly, but they are loaded with contradictions and set to remain unstable in the near term, Pavel Baev and Kemal Kirisci of the Brookings Institution wrote in a study this month.Russias stance on the non-binding Kurdish independence vote is also troubling for Turkey, for whom opposing Kurdish statehood is a cornerstone of foreign policy due to its own Kurdish minority. The Russian foreign ministry said Wednesday that while Moscow supports the territorial integrity of Iraq, it views the Kurds national aspirations with respect.Erdogan will want to press Putin over the much-heralded S-400 deal, which while officially signed could still be years away from implementation.Timur Akhmetov, a Turkey expert at the Russian International Affairs Council, said deliveries of the S-400s could probably begin only after 2020-21 due to orders from China, while Ankaras insistence on a technology transfer as part of the deal may also create problems. But both Moscow and Ankara are, for now, happy to send a message to the West that they are serious about defence cooperation. They are trying to utilise the issue of the S-400 for their respective political interests, Akhmetov told AFP.

Interpol approves Palestinian membership bid

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Interpol on Wednesday approved the Palestinian Authoritys membership bid, a new victory in its drive for international representation despite strong Israeli opposition.Israel lobbies hard against Palestinian efforts to join global organisations to advance their goal of statehood. It claimed victory last year when the Palestinian bid to join the global police body was suspended.Interpol approved the Palestinian application along with a bid by the Solomon Islands during its annual general assembly in Beijing.New member countries State of Palestine and Solomon Islands bring INTERPOLs membership to 192, it said on its Twitter account. It did not detail the voting but candidacies require the approval of a two-thirds majority of countries present at the general assembly, excluding abstentions. The Palestine Liberation Organisations negotiations affairs department said on Twitter they had received more than 75 percent of the vote.Palestines membership is the outcome of members defending this organisations raison detre and advancing its core values, and a clear rejection of attempts at cynical manipulation and political bullying, Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Malki said in a statement.Israels foreign ministry did not immediately comment.Palestine gained observer status at the United Nations in 2012 and since then has joined more than 50 international organisations and agreements, according to the Palestinian foreign ministry.Among them are the International Criminal Court and the United Nations heritage body UNESCO.Interpol, which is based in the French city of Lyon, eases the exchange of information between police forces and issues red notices -- non-binding notifications of arrest warrants -- at the request of a member state or an international tribunal.Senior Palestinian official Jibril Rajoub had told AFP on Sunday that were looking to be in all of the international institutions, including Interpol, as an organised state. We are looking for the Palestinian state to be a positive contributor toward security and stability in the region and in the international community, he said.Regarding Israels opposition, he said: They dont want any progress toward a Palestinian state.Israel does not want us to be in FIFA. How would they want us to be in Interpol? he said.Alan Baker, a former senior Israeli diplomat and legal expert, said the membership application was just a political PR move on the part of the Palestinians.Because theyre not interested in negotiating (with Israel) theyre trying to achieve the end result, which is a state, through international organisations, he said ahead of Wednesdays vote.Baker rejected the notion that Palestinians would be able to initiate arrest warrants at will against Israelis by joining Interpol. He said the attempt by the Palestinians to politicise what is a super-professional organisation is very harmful to Interpol.

No Misbah, Younis as Pakistan enter new Test era

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistan will step into a new Test era without retired batting greats Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq when they take on Sri Lanka in the first Test in Abu Dhabi today (Thursday).Playing without Younis and Misbah is unaccustomed territory for Pakistan, who havent had a Test featuring neither of the talismanic, prolific pair in seven years. It comes as they prepare to welcome the return of full international cricket to their home country next month, when Sri Lanka visit for a Twenty20 game in Lahore.Together, Younis and Misbah have appeared in 193 Tests, accumulating 15,331 runs, 44 centuries and 15 century stands between them, briefly lifting the team to the top of the Test rankings in August last year. They have dominated the batting at Pakistans venues in United Arab Emirates (UAE), where they have been forced to play home games since a deadly terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009.The pair made Pakistan so invincible that they have not lost any of the nine series they have played in UAE, with new captain Sarfraz Ahmed vowing to implement what they learnt from the two greats.Their contributions are immense, admits Ahmed. But we have to move on and implement what we have learnt from Misbah and Younis in the last seven years.Experienced batsman Azhar Ali will move down to his customary number three after opening the innings since last year.We will use two openers, then Ali will bat at three followed by Asad Shafiq, so we have players who can handle the batting, said Ahmed.Younis is not only Pakistans highest Test runs scorer, with 10,099, but the slips fielding specialist also holds the national record of 139 catches in 118 Tests.Misbahs calm influence as a batsman, as well as skipper, will also be tough to replace.Ali was in doubt for the first Test after suffering a knee injury but he has since responded well to treatment, while Yasir Shah will lead the spin attack in a squad with five fast bowlers.Shah, who took 24 wickets in Pakistans 2-1 series win in Sri Lanka two years ago, will be assisted by uncapped spinners Mohammad Asghar and Bilal Asif.Sri Lanka, who lost 3-0 at home to India last month, will be looking to right the ship after a torrid run of results which has had the media and fans on their back. But they will be without their key all-rounder and former captain Angelo Mathews, who has been ruled out of the first Test with a calf strain.Skipper Dinesh Chandimal believes his team will have to be at their best to beat Pakistan, despite the lack of their two long serving players.Younis and Misbah were great players so we can have advantage they not being there, but still we need to step up in our performance, said Chandimal.Sri Lanka will be buoyed by the return of their pace spearheads Nuwan Pradeep and Suranga Lakmal, who suffered injuries last month. But their main hope of winning the two-match series looks likely to hinge on veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who has 90 wickets in 19 Tests against Pakistan.Squads (from):Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Sami Aslam, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Usman Salahuddin, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Asghar, Bilal Asif, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Wahab Riaz.Sri Lanka: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lahiru Thirimanne (vice-capt), Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Roshen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Rangana Herath, Lakshan Sandakan, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Gamage.Umpires: Ian Gould (ENG) and Nigel Llong (ENG).Tv umpire: Richard Kettleborough (ENG).ICC match referee: Andy Pycroft (ZIM).

Ali breaks Windies hearts in rain-hit triumph

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Moeen Ali again proved Englands hero with the bat as they beat West Indies by six runs in a rain-marred fourth one-day international at The Oval to go an unbeatable 3-0 up with one to play in the series.England, without Ben Stokes after he was dropped following his arrest, were on course for defeat at 181 for five chasing 357 to win.But Ali, fresh from his match-winning century in the third ODI at Bristol on Sunday, made an unbeaten 48 off 25 balls including six fours and two sixes.Together with Jos Buttler (43 not out), he added 77 in eight overs.England were ahead under D/L when rain stopped play with their score on 258 for five off 35.1 oversYet the match might have been beyond them had Evin Lewis, who made a stunning 176, not retired hurt in the 47th over after deflecting a Jake Ball delivery onto his right ankle. It was later announced that man-of-the-match Lewis, who had to be wheeled off the field on a stretcher and went to hospital without fielding, had suffered a hairline fracture that would sideline him for at least two weeks.Defeat was also tough on West Indies paceman Alzarri Joseph, who took all of Englands wickets during an ODI best haul of five for 56.Evin set the tone for us up front, said West Indies captain Jason Holder. Unfortunately he was unable to bat in the last few overs. Its not often you one guy scores 170, another gets five wickets and you lose the game.Lewiss innings, which surpassed his previous ODI hundred of 148 against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo in November last year, was the cornerstone of West Indies 356 for five.He was eyeing a double century until his freak injury left him writhing in agony. The 25-year-old Trinidad left-hander remained unbeaten, having faced 130 balls including 17 fours and seven sixes. His innings was the fourth highest in ODIs by a West Indies batsman. The Windies had slumped to 33 for three following Chris Woakess treble strike that included the fourth ball exit of Lewiss fellow left-handed opener Chris Gayle who made a dashing 94 in Bristol. This match took place just hours after England unveiled their Ashes squad. They knew they would be without all-rounder Stokes -- included in the Ashes party and retained as Test vice-captain -- after his arrest in the early hours of Monday morning.Stokes, who has a broken finger, remains under investigation after being released without charge.Victorious England captain Eoin Morgan told reporters there might need to be a re-think regarding nights out.Weve always policed it ourselves, (but) its something were going to look into -- in light of whats happened -- because we need to look after each other as a team, he said.As for the match, Morgan said: Evin Lewis played well. We were up against it, but it was an extremely confident innings (from Ali).Lewis completed a chanceless century, off 94 balls.Often billed as Gayles heir apparent, Lewis -- a far shorter and less muscular batsman -- hit two sixes in as many balls off fast bowler Liam Plunkett, the second a magnificent straight drive. He was missed on 122 when Jason Roy, running back from cover, dropped a tough chance.Roy, only recalled after fellow opener Alex Hales was omitted together with Stokes after the pair were out late prior to the latters arrest, cashed in with 84 on his Surrey home ground. His 66-ball innings ended when he was caught behind off Joseph to end an opening stand of 126 with Jonny Bairstow (39), who fell in similar fashion.West Indies must have thought it was their night when Joseph took his fifth wicket via a diving slip catch by Gayle, not renowned for his athleticism, that dismissed Sam Billings. But Ali and Buttler, together with the London weather, combined to give England a 15th win in 16 completed ODIs against West Indies.

Freak injury ends Lewis's blazing century against England

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Evin Lewis made a stunning 176 before having to retire hurt in bizarre fashion during the fourth one-day international against England at The Oval on Wednesday.Lewiss highest ODI score, surpassing his previous hundred at this level of 148 against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo in November last year, was the cornerstone of the tourists 356 for five as they fought to square this five-match series at 2-0 down with two still to play.Having been dropped on 122, Lewis was on course for a double century until, in the 47th over, he deflected a delivery from paceman Jake Ball into his ankle and collapsed to the turf.Writhing in agony, the 25-year-old Trinidad left-handed opener required prolonged on-field treatment before being wheeled off on a stretcher to sympathetic applause from a capacity crowd. He was later taken to hospital for an X-ray.Lewis remained unbeaten, having faced 130 balls including 17 fours and seven sixes.Together with West Indies captain Jason Holder (77) he shared a stand of 168, with Lewis having previously added 117 in 22 overs in the company of Jason Mohammed (46).Defeat in the series opener meant World Twenty20 champions West Indies could no longer qualify for the 2019 World Cup in Britain and coach Stuart Law said before this fixture he wanted to see set batsmen go on deep into the innings.Lewis and Holder did just that amid a blizzard of boundaries.West Indies had been 33 for three after Chris Woakess early treble strike that included the fourth ball dismissal of dangerman Chris Gayle, caught in the slips following his dashing 94 in Bristol. But even Warwickshire all-rounder Woakess figures suffered as he finished with three for 71 in 10 overs. Both Mohammed and Holder benefitted from dropped catches by England captain Eoin Morgan, although neither chance was easy. This match took place against the backdrop of England unveiling their Ashes squad announcement at The Oval a couple of hours before the toss.England already knew they would be without Ben Stokes -- included in the Ashes party and retained as Test vice-captain -- after the star all-rounder was dropped following his arrest in Bristol on suspicion of actual bodily harm in the early hours of Monday morning. The 26-year-old remains under investigation after being released without charge.Trinidad left-handed opener Lewis was quickly into his stride and completed a chanceless century, off 94 balls, when he pulled Woakes for his 13th boundary.Often billed as Gayles heir apparent, Lewis -- a far shorter and less muscular batsman -- then hit two sixes in as many balls off fast bowler Liam Plunkett, the second a magnificent straight drive.Lewis was missed on 122 when Jason Roy, running back from cover, dropped a chance off Rashid. He slog-swept Moeen Ali for six to go to 150, with Holder also hitting a six off the spinner to complete a 47-ball fifty.

LONDON (AFP) - Ben Stokes was included in Englands 16-man squad for the Ashes tour of Australia announced Wednesday despite breaking his hand in the incident that led to his recent arrest on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.Durham all-rounder Stokes was dropped for Wednesdays fourth one-day international against West Indies at The Oval -- the venue for the Ashes squad announcement -- after being arrested early on Monday in Bristol. That followed Englands win in the third ODI in the southwest city on Sunday.Stokes, 26, remains under investigation after being released without charge. For the time being, he has retained his position of vice-captain to Test skipper Joe Root, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) cricket director Andrew Strauss told an Oval news conference.Ben did have an X-ray yesterday (Tuesday), said Strauss.Early results are that he has got a minor fracture on his right hand, the former England captain added. There are obviously more tests that need to be done, but the early indications are that he should be fit to play a full part in all the Ashes Test matches. The injury to Stokes right hand is believed to have been sustained during a confrontation that left a man in hospital.A police investigation is unlikely to be concluded before England leave for Australia on October 28, meaning the incident could hang over Stokes for the whole tour. Moreover, Stokes is just one on-field offence away from incurring a potential two-Test ban under the International Cricket Councils code of conduct.England ODI regular Alex Hales -- an Ashes long-shot who did not make the Test squad -- was also left out of Wednesdays match after being with Stokes on Sunday night. The pair could be among several England players who face ECB action, with Strauss saying: What I am doing is speaking to the players individually to get their accounts of what went on.They may be subject to disciplinary proceedings including Ben, explained Strauss, the last England captain to win the Ashes in Australia in 2010/11.Englands squad contained three uncapped players in 23-year-old Somerset fast bowler Craig Overton, 20-year-old Hampshire leg-spinner Mason Crane, who will provide support to Moeen Ali, and Surrey wicket-keeper Ben Foakes, 24, included as cover for Jonny Bairstow.Meanwhile there were recalls for middle-order batsmen James Vince and Gary Ballance despite the pairs struggles during their previous Test stints.Vince was dropped at the end of the 2016 English season northern summer following a poor run of seven Tests that saw him post a top score of 42 in 11 innings against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. This season Vince is averaging a modest 34.82 in first-class cricket for Hampshire but England believe his game will be suited to Australian pitches.Ballance only managed 85 runs in two Tests against South Africa at an average of 21.25 before he suffered a fractured finger.Overton got his chance ahead of the likes of Mark Wood and Steven Finn after taking 43 Championship wickets this season.Essex batsman Tom Westley, who failed to convince at number three this season, was dropped. This has been Roots first season as Test captain, with the Yorkshire batsman overseeing home series wins against South Africa (3-1) and West Indies (2-1).But England national selector James Whitaker said: A tour of Australia is the ultimate test for our squad. In addition to England coach Trevor Baylisss regular staff, there will be some new faces in the Australians backroom set-up, with former New Zealand paceman Shane Bond appointed as a fast-bowling consultant.Bond will fill the gap left by former bowling chief Ottis Gibsons departure to become the new head coach of South Africa up until the end of the second Test.Former England one-day captain Paul Collingwood, Stokess captain at Durham, will also take a coaching role during the Test series.England hold the Ashes after a 3-2 win on home soil in 2015.But their last tour of Australia saw them suffer a 5-0 Ashes defeat in 2013/14.The first match in the upcoming five-Test Ashes series is set to start in Brisbane on November 23.
