Tennis: Serena sent packing by Kuznetsova in Miami shocker

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - World number one and three-time defending champion Serena Williams crashed out of the Miami Open on Monday, falling to Russias Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (3/7), 6-1, 6-2.Williams fired 13 aces and 43 winners but also made 55 unforced errors, prompting questions about her fitness and movement that irked the 21-time Grand Slam champion.I dont think its appropriate to criticize my movement right now, Williams said. I did the best I could. I cant win every match. These players come out and give their best. I have to give 300 percent every match. The 34-year-old American was seeking her ninth Miami crown but instead matched her earliest-ever exit from 2000 with a fourth-round departure at the ATP and WTA hardcourt event. Its obviously disappointing, but I have won here a lot, so its OK, Williams said. Also ousted was world number two Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, upset by 20th-ranked Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.Williams, who said she was physically fine and not affected by the heat and humidity, arrived having lost back-to-back finals for the first time since 2004, falling to Germanys Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open and Belarus Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells.Adding the upset only increases the intensity as she prepares to defend French Open and Wimbledon crowns in the next few months. There are expectations, she said. There are also the expectations I put on myself. Thats pretty hard to live up to, the expectations I put on myself. For 30-year-old Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion who lost eight of 10 prior matches to Williams, it was turning back time to when she won the 2006 Miami title.Im really happy with my performance, Kuznetsova said. I had to stay within my game and put a lot of balls back into the court and I did that really well today.Kuznetsova, seeded 15th, next faces the winner of a later match between Ukraines 12th-seeded Elina Svitolina and Russian 30th seed Ekaterina Makarova. After an exchange of early first-set breaks led to a tie-breaker, Williams jumped ahead 4-1, aided by two aces and a service winner, and took the last three points on an overhead smash, a service winner and a forehand winner.Kuznetsova held at love to open the second set and forced Williams to save three break points in the second game, finally breaking for a 3-1 edge when Williams netted a backhand.Kuznetsova saved two break points in the fifth game, Williams double faulted away a break in the sixth and Kuznetsova held at love in the seventh to force a third set.Williams was humbled in the third from the start, being broken at love in the first game and by a backhand service return winner in the third on the way to losing in two hours and three minutes.Radwanska, the 2012 Miami champion and Wimbledon runner-up who lost to Williams in the Australian Open semi-finals, faded in the second set as well to Bacsinszky, a 2015 French Open semi-finalist.In the first set I was kind of nervous, Bacsinszky said. I told myself it might be a long day and I had to put a few balls in and keep working at it.Bacsinszkys quarter-final foe will be Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep, the 2014 French Open runner-up who eliminated 69th-ranked British wildcard Heather Watson 6-3, 6-4.Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori cruised into the fourth round by routing Ukraines 27th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2.I played a very solid match, Nishikori said. Its not easy when youre in the top 10 and everybody is playing their best against you. I have to really stay focused and play my tennis all the time. I think Im doing well.Nishikori plays for a quarter-final berth against Spanish 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

Tennis: Andy Murray crashes out to Dimitrov at Miami

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - World number two Andy Murray of Britain was upset in the third round of the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Monday, falling to Bulgarian 26th seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 6-3.Murray was seeking a third Miami crown and his fourth final in five years but lost to a foe he had beaten in six of eight prior meetings. The 28-year-old Scotsman lost a 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 6-3 shocker to 28th-ranked Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov on Monday at the Miami Open after having been sent packing at Indian Wells by Argentinas 48th-ranked Frederico Delbonis.I was up a break in the third, same thing in Indian Wells as well, Murray said. Then lost a run of games in both matches. So need to look at that and see where I go from there.Murray, who fell to 0-5 in Australian Open finals with a loss to Novak Djokovic in January, became a father February 7 when his wife Kim gave birth to daughter Sophia and took a break until Indian Wells.I didnt know what to expect, Murray said. I expected Indian Wells to be tricky. But here I had a long time to prepare, practiced pretty well.Indian Wells, understandable. Here, not so much.Murray said becoming a father has given him a more relaxed perspective on tennis, but has not changed the amount of work he does.Win or lose, its not irrelevent to me but its not as important as it was before, he said. Its not as stressful.Four of the top five mens seeds and six of the top 10 at Miami are gone before the last 16, matching 2005s tournament record. It hasnt happened often, Murray said of such seeded attrition. Im not sure exactly why that is.But Murray is not ready to proclaim this the year for a change of the guard dumping himself, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.I hope its not for my sake, Murray said. I need a little more evidence than one or two weeks to support that. But he does have respect for rising young talent and their potential for Grand Slam success. The group of guys coming up behind are really, really good players, Murray said. It depends a little bit on how they develop, too. A lot of them are huge guys, big guys with big games and move well.Murray, the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon champion, made the French Open semi-finals the past two years and is expected to be in the hunt again this year at Roland Garros. But Murray knows he cannot make 55 unforced errors as he did against Dimitrov.Grigor is a very good player but I had opportunities, Murray said. Its not like I came out and played awful stuff the whole time. When you get your chances you have to put your foot down.

Tennis: Nishikori rolls into fourth round at Miami

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori cruised into the fourth round at the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Monday by routing Ukraines 27th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2.The 26-year-old Asian number one needed only 72 minutes to advance into a matchup for a quarter-final berth against the winner of a later match between French ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Spanish 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, already a champion at Auckland and Sofia this year.I played a very solid match, Nishikori said. Its not easy when youre in the top 10 and everybody is playing their best against you. I have to really stay focused and play my tennis all the time. I think Im doing well.Dolgopolov broke Nishikori to open the match but the second of his five double faults in the set cost him a break in the next game. He was broken again in the fourth and eighth games, sending a forehand long with his 19th unforced error to hand Nishikori the last break and the set.Nishikori broke for a 3-1 lead in the second set and again to close out the match when Dolgopolov netted a backhand on the last point, his 30th unforced error of the match.Nishikori, who won his fourth consecutive Memphis title last month for his 11th career ATP crown, could face British second seed Andy Murray in the quarter-finals.Murray, trying to capture his third Miami trophy and reach the final for the fourth time in five seasons, plays Bulgarian 26th seed Grigor Dimitrov in a later match. On the womens side, Romanian fifth seed Simona Halep, the 2014 French Open runner-up, reached the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 69th-ranked British wildcard Heather Watson.Halep, a first-round loser to Chinas Zhang Shuai at the Australian Open, next faces either Polish world number two Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2012 Miami champion who took her 18th WTA title earlier this year at Shenzhen, or 20th-ranked Swiss Timea Bacsinszky.World number one Serena Williams, the three-time defending champion seeking her ninth career Miami title, faces Russian 15th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam winner, in a later fourth-round match.Williams, a 21-time Grand Slam champion, has lost back-to-back finals for the first time since 2004, falling to Germanys Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open and Belarus Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells.Second seed Kerber or 13th seed Azarenka could meet Williams again in the Miami final, but Azarenka meets Spanish fourth seed Garbine Muguruza and Kerber faces Hungarys 49th-ranked Timea Babos in later matches to decide quarter-final berths.

Football: Messi given impromptu standing ovation in Argentina theatre

Posted:

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Lionel Messi unsurprisingly is recognised no matter where he goes, so an attempt to make an incognito trip to the theatre on Saturday was always going to be in vain. The Argentinian five-time Ballon dOr winner tried to quietly take in a play in his home country with family members, but was forced to go on stage and receive a standing ovation after one of the actors spotted him in the crowd. The 500 people in attendance shouted Ole, ole, Leo, Leo, while he was hugged by all the actors. The 28-year-old will be hoping to help his national side move into one of the four South American automatic qualification places for the 2018 World Cup when Argentina take on Bolivia on Tuesday.

Lahore blast: US stands with people and govt of Pakistan

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) – The State Department spokesman John Kirby while briefing the newsmen in Washington on Monday said that US condemn in the strongest terms the appalling terrorist attack in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore that killed dozens and left scores injured. He said that the United States stands with the people and government of Pakistan at this very difficult hour and we send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed, and of course, to all those injured we are praying for a speedy recovery. The spokesman further said that attacks like these only deepen our shared resolve to defeat terrorism around the world, and we’re going to continue to work with our partners in Pakistan and across the region to combat the threat of terrorism.Answering a question, John Kirby said that there is no doubt that Pakistan continues to be under threat from terrorists and added that innocent Pakistanis are suffering at the hands of terrorists. He said that nothing’s changed about our commitment to do what we can to help them deal with this threat and added that it’s not just a Pakistani threat. It’s a regional threat; it’s a global threat in many ways. So we stand by the people of Pakistan right now and we also stand by our commitment to assist Pakistan going forward.

Oil edges lower as oversupply weighs

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices drifted lower Monday, extending last weeks decline amid a global oversupply, with trading activity severely limited by market holidays in Europe.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in May fell seven cents to $39.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea for May delivery, the European benchmark, fell 17 cents to $40.27 a barrel. The steam has gone out from the bull market for now, said Mike Lynch of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. Unless we get some more serious bullish -- either inventories information, news out of OPEC or economic -- news, so far were still waiting.Oil prices last week posted their first weekly decline in a month and a half. Much of the downturn reflected pressure from a US government report that said US commercial crude inventories had jumped a huge 9.4 million barrels in the prior week, adding to worries about the long-running global glut. Before that, oil had rebounded since February on speculation that major producers could agree to freeze output or take some action to curb falling prices. Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and key non-members led by Russia are due to discuss a proposed output freeze at a meeting in Doha on April 17. The petroleum markets have been unable to hold minor overnight gains as traders are beginning to focus more on rising inventories than on hopes that a meeting between most OPEC producers with Russia and some other non-OPEC producers will transform a surplus into a deficit, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Evans said that based on the producers stated agenda for freezing output at January levels, a bullish outcome for the market was not anticipated. We see potential for prices to begin weakening even ahead of the meeting as this probability begins to sink in, he said.Bernard Aw at IG Markets noted that market business was modest due to the long Easter break across most world markets.Everything hinges on the meeting between OPEC and non-OPEC producers, Aw said. If it takes place and they come to some agreement of a production freeze, we could see some gains well beyond $40.

Dollar mixed ahead of Yellen speech

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar traded mixed Monday as investors awaited Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellens speech on monetary policy, hoping to glean insight into the path of interest rate increases.Investors were expected to focus on Yellens remarks Tuesday to the Economic Club of New York to see if she sheds light on when the central bank will raise rates for a second time. With the economy exhibiting patches of weakness, analysts are penciling in about two increases this year, after the Fed lifted rates in December for the first time in nine years.US Commerce Department data showed lackluster consumer spending in February and the Feds preferred inflation measure rose 1.0 percent year-over-year, down from 1.2 percent in January. Stripping out volatile food and energy prices, core inflation was up 1.7 percent from a year ago, near the Feds 2.0 percent target.A core rate of 1.7 percent will leave many hawks at the Fed concerned they are falling behind an upward inflationary trend, said Jay Morelock of FTN Financial. The dollar slipped against the euro, trading at $1.1196 per euro around 2100 GMT, down from $1.1166 at the same time Friday. The greenback rose to 113.45 yen from 113.14 yen on Friday. The Federal Open Market Committee, the Feds policy arm, holds its next meeting on April 26-27, though some analysts say the FOMC would be more likely to raise rates at the June 14-15 meeting.Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management said that Fridays March labor market report could lift the dollar if earnings rebound after last months surprise decline. However if Yellen remains dovish and the payrolls report is weak then investors will punish the dollar and rule out any chance of June tightening, Lien said.

Stokes revels in role as England death bowler

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Ice-cool all-rounder Ben Stokes said Monday he was revelling in his role as Englands death bowler after his nerves of steel once again kept his side in the World Twenty20.With Sri Lanka needing 15 runs to win and their captain Angelo Mathews hitting Englands bowlers around the park in Saturdays crunch match in New Delhi, Stokes was handed the ball at the start of the 20th over. But after spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were clattered for 21 in their final overs, Stokes bowled a string of near perfect yorkers and conceded only four runs to secure Englands place in the semi-finals.Stokes also held his nerve in Englands previous match against Afghanistan, taking the final over as the minnows fell 16 runs short of their target. While other England bowlers have come unstuck on the global stage -- including Stuart Broad who was hit for six sixes by Indias Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 World T20 -- the 24-year-old Stokes is relishing the responsibility.I would much rather be doing that last over thing rather than hoping that whoever is bowling it gets us through. Id rather be the man doing it, he said in the build-up to Wednesdays semi-final against New Zealand.Yes, I love being involved in the game and being in high pressure situations. I think it probably brings the best out of me in terms of my cricket. I enjoy getting into the big moments of the game.Englands passage to the semis was hampered by defeat to the West Indies in their opening match, meaning they had to win all of their other three games against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and South Africa. The West Indies also beat England in 2010 but Paul Collingwoods side went on to win the tournament in the Caribbean, the first time that the team had ever won a major international tournament.Collingwood, who has captained Stokes back home in Durham, is currently in India as a consultant for the England team.Colly actually did say that at the start of the tournament that we got beaten by the West Indies in the first game. Its a good omen because thats what happened to him, Stokes told reporters in New Delhi.Under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, a young England side is developing a reputation for aggressive strokeplay which has surprised many observers.Stokes is one of the more seasoned members of the team after making his international debut in 2011.He said that as one of the least experienced teams out here, England have an opportunity to prove a lot of people wrong.Stokes was born in Christchurch on New Zealands South Island and his father was a New Zealand rugby league international. But while admitting that he might have dreamed of playing for New Zealand as a youngster, he rejected any notion of split loyalties. Ever since I made a choice of having a career of a professional cricketer, ever since getting picked for the England under-15s, Ive just wanted to play for England.Stokes insisted England would not underestimate the unheralded Black Caps, but pointed out that they did beat them in a World T20 warm-up.Theyre obviously the in-form team, they havent lost a game yet. We played them in a warm-up game and beat them and we still take confidence from that and we obviously beat them in the English summer when we had the series against them, said Stokes. So we just know that if we play to our capability like we did against Sri Lanka, no matter who we face, we can give any team a good run. While it will be the fifth different venue for New Zealand in the tournament, England should have an advantage by playing their third match in a row in Delhi, with Stokes saying that its a home game even if we are in India.

Tennis: Kerber, Azarenka advance at Miami

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber rallied to reach the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Sunday when 108th-ranked Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens retired due to illness. The German second seed, who upset top-ranked Serena Williams two months ago at Melbourne for her first Grand Slam title, was leading 1-6, 6-2, 3-0 when Bertens met her at the net and said she could not continue.I was not finding a rhythm at the beginning of the match, Kerber said. I had to stay strong, believe and keep fighting. I hope she gets well soon but Im glad to be in the next round.Kerber next faces Hungarys 49th-ranked Timea Babos, who ousted 18-year-old Japanese 104th-ranked wildcard Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-0. Kerber is 3-0 against Babos, with 2012 wins at Cincinnati and the London Olympics and another in last years first round of the French Open. The 28-year-old left-hander became the first German woman to win a Slam crown since Steffi Graf in 1999 at Wimbledon, but since then Kerber had lost opening matches at Doha and Indian Wells after withdrawing from Doha with a right thigh injury. After exchanging breaks to open, Bertens broke Kerber twice more -- when the German swatted a forehand wide and on her own backhand drop volley winner -- then held to claim the first set in 31 minutes.Kerber held to 3-2 in the second set when Bertens called for a trainer to help combat the heat and stomach pain. Bertens fought on but Kerber won the next six games before her rival retired.Eighth-ranked Victoria Azarenka, who won 2009 and 2011 Miami titles, eliminated Polish qualifier Magda Linette 6-3, 6-0.The 26-year-old from Belarus is trying to become only the third woman to sweep the Indian Wells-Miami US double after Graf in 1994 and 1996 and Kim Clijsters in 2005.Azarenka hit a backhand winner to break for the first set, then saved two break points in an 11-minute opening game of the second set and breezed to victory from there.I won the first set and I took the energy and I stayed on top, Azarenka said.Argentinas Horacio Zeballos, a lucky loser who replaced Roger Federer in the draw when the 17-time Grand Slam champion withdrew due to illness, advanced to the fourth round, rallying to beat Spains Fernando Verdasco 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).Zeballos, ranked 112th, had not won a match since last July before beating countryman Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round. He will face Belgian 15th seed David Goffin on Tuesday for a quarter-final berth.Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych reached the last 16, outlasting US 31st seed Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3.Austrian 14th seed Dominic Thiem moved into the fourth-round path of world number one Novak Djokovic by dispatching 124th-ranked Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-2 in 64 minutes.Thiem captured his fifth career ATP title last month by beating Australias Bernard Tomic in the Acapulco final.Two-time defending champion Djokovic, who won his 11th Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open two months ago, first must get past Portugals 38th-ranked Joao Sousa in a later match at the hardcourt event.Djokovic, trying to match Andre Agassis record of six career Miami crowns, has won 11 Miami matches in a row and 25 of his past 26 matches at the venue, the only loss in the span coming to Tommy Haas in 2013.The 28-year-old Serbian also has won titles at Doha and Indian Wells this year and hopes to complete the US double sweep at Miami and Indian Wells for the third consecutive year.

Golf: New No. 1 Day wins WGC Match Play

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Australian Jason Day beat Louis Oosthuizen 5 and 4 to win his second WGC Match Play crown on Sunday.Day departs Austin, Texas, not only with the trophy but with the world number one ranking, which he regained by reaching the semi-finals on Saturday as American Jordan Spieth was eliminated in the round of 16.Day, the 2014 champion, had beaten defending champion Rory McIlroy 1 up on Sunday morning in a heavyweight semi-final showdown. There was further disappointment in store for McIlroy, as Spains 52nd-seeded Rafa Cabrera Bello defeated the third seed from Northern Ireland 3 and 2 in the consolation final to claim third place.Oosthuizen had beaten Cabrera Bello 4 and 3 in the semis.Day joined Tiger Woods and fellow Australian Geoff Ogilvy as multiple Match Play winners. He opened the title match with a bogey to go 1 down, but had rallied to lead 1 up through four holes and stretched his lead from there. Im very, very thrilled. Its been a memorable week this week not only to win the Dell Match Play Championship but also to get back to number one in the world, said Day, who hurt his back in his first round-robin win on Wednesday and wasnt even sure hed be able to continue in the event. He said the see-saw battle with McIlroy in the semi-final was nerve-wracking.It was a hard match today, said Day, who drained a 13-foot par putt to halve the final hole and seal the victory over McIlroy.I would have been a little disappointed to go through all this stuff and not have a chance of winning (the title), Day said.Day took a one-up lead with a birdie at the first, then made a double bogey at the second.

Squash: Egypt's El Shorbagy, El Sherbini take British Open titles

Posted:

KINGSTON UPON HULL (AFP) - Mohamed El Shorbagy and Nour El Sherbini helped Egypt make three remarkable pieces of history as they became British Open champions in very contrasting finals. The fourth-seeded Sherbini became the first Egyptian woman to win the 94-year-old title.Shorbagy then made it the first time Egypt had won both titles, and it was also the first time that the sports leading nation had provided all four finalists.Top-seeded Shorbagys victory, completing a successful title defence, happened far more comfortably than expected, by 11-3, 11-5, 11-9 against a Ramy Ashour who was physically diminished after four very hard battles following four months away from competition.Sherbini won a very tight battle by 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 against 18-year-old Nouran Gohar, who narrowly failed to become the youngest ever womens winner. It was evident almost immediately that Ashour was not moving easily and quickly he was a long way down. When he went five points down in the second game as well, it seemed as though a rout was possible. After 15 minutes however Ashours body began to loosen and allow him more flexible movements, which both improved the quality of the rallies and gave the scoreboard a more respectable appearance. Shorbagy drove hard, scurried energetically and made few mistakes. Even when Ashour began working him in the third game, taking leads of 4-2 and 5-4, Shorbagy soon showed he possessed another gearThe match ended with a little drama when Ashour dived full length to make a remarkable retrieve, leapt up and almost earned a let even though Shorbagy had driven the ball fiercely to a winning length. But an appeal to the video review showed that Ashour had not quite done enough to retrive the ball again. Its been a crazy season for me, said Shorbagy. I was telling my mother and my brother that I didnt know how I was going to keep up with what I did last season but Ive won five titles already so this is a dream for me. I have been able to back things up mentally and I am proud of that. But I want to say that Ramy is a great person and a great player. He has achieved so much for our sport, both on and off the court. I really hope that he can be healthy because our matches are just something different and we have such a great rivalry. That may yet come about in future, though this is in fact the first time that Shorbagy has beaten Ashour in a best of five games match on the PSA World Tour.Ashour did not, as he might have, make an excuse of his limited physical abilities, caused by contesting 19 games in his previous four matches. I should have prepared mentally better than I did today, he claimed. On this tour you always play extremely tough matches from start to finish. The womens final by contrast, was full of action and uncertainty. In the deciding game Sherbini was warned for a collision early on, and then frustrated by a controversial no let decision which helped Gohar to reduce a three-point deficit to one at 6-7.It was still one point, at 7-8, when Sherbini pointed out that for the second time in the tournament Gohars badly cut knee had started bleeding again. She was obliged to leave the court to have it bandaged, bringing a nine-minute delay. On resumption Sherbini produced a brilliant forehand counter-hit and then two more heavy, accurate forehand drives to close out the match.I am very sad, Gohar said, just managing to hold back the tears while still on court. I was so close. It was my first final and I didnt quite have the experience to win it.Its really weird to hear that I am champion, said Sherbini, who played in the 2012 final but is still only 20. Im very proud be the first Egyptian (woman) to win. Its a huge thing and hopefully other Egyptians will make us proud.

MIAMI (AFP) - World number one Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Miami Open on Sunday, defeating Portugals 38th-ranked Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-1.Two-time defending champion Djokovic, trying to match Andre Agassis record of six career Miami titles, needed only 78 minutes to win his 12th match in a row at the hardcourt event and 26th in his past 27 Miami starts. That first set could have gone either way, Djokovic said. I managed to hit the right balls at the right moment and make it to the finish. The 28-year-old Serbian, who won his 11th Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open two months ago, also has crowns at Doha and Indian Wells this year and hopes to complete the Miami-Indian Wells sweep for the third consecutive year.Djokovics next foe will be Austrian 14th seed Dominic Thiem, who dispatched 124th-ranked Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-2 in 64 minutes. He has one of the most powerful baseline games in tennis, Djokovic said of Thiem. He likes to construct his points so I will try and take away his time. Hes had one of the best years of his life. Hes beaten Nadal on clay. Hes one of the players in the next generation we should all look out for.Thiem captured his fifth career ATP title last month by beating Australias Bernard Tomic in the Acapulco final and downed 14-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal on the way to a Buenos Aires claycourt crown.Im sure he wants to showcase all that hes got in his arsenal but I will be sure to be ready for him, Djokovic said.Sousa fell to 0-3 against Djokovic and 1-21 against top-10 foes with his 19th such loss in a row since beating David Ferrer in Kuala Lumpur in 2013.He came out with a clear game plan, said Djokovic. He wanted to take his chances. He did not have much to lose. It can be dangerous. I know the importance of stepping up a few levels and delivering my A game.Kerber, Azarenka advanceReigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber and last weeks Indian Wells winner Victoria Azarenka, who each upset world number one Serena Williams in the final to win those titles, reached the last 16 on the womens side.German second seed Kerber advanced 1-6, 6-2, 3-0 when 108th-ranked Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens retired due to illness.I was not finding a rhythm at the beginning of the match, Kerber said. I had to stay strong, believe and keep fighting. I hope she gets well soon but Im glad to be in the next round.Kerber next faces Hungarys 49th-ranked Timea Babos, who ousted 18-year-old Japanese 104th-ranked wildcard Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-0.Eighth-ranked Azarenka, who won 2009 and 2011 Miami titles, eliminated Polish qualifier Magda Linette 6-3, 6-0.The 26-year-old from Belarus is trying to become only the third woman to take Indian Wells and Miami in the same year after Graf in 1994 and 1996 and Kim Clijsters in 2005.Azarenka hit a backhand winner to break for the first set, then saved two break points in an 11-minute opening game of the second set and breezed to victory from there.I stayed focused, took my opportunities and kept applying pressure, Azarenka said.Federer fill-in wins againArgentinas Horacio Zeballos, a lucky loser who replaced Roger Federer in the draw when the 17-time Grand Slam champion withdrew due to illness, advanced to the fourth round by overcoming Spains Fernando Verdasco 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).Zeballos, ranked 112th, had not won a match since last July before beating countryman Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round. Amla insists current SA stars can still win a global title

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - South Africa batsman Hashim Amla insisted his teams World Cup dream lives on, saying the top Proteas stars are still hoping for glory in the near future.Apart from their Champions Trophy triumph in 1998, South Africa have never won a major International Cricket Council event since their post-apartheid return in 1991.Faf du Plessis side have already exited the World Twenty20, even before their final group game against Sri Lanka on Monday, their World Cup jinx striking again.Well listen, this team will win a World Cup or ICC tournament at some stage, I think we have won one in 1998, Amla told reporters at New Delhis Feroz Shah Kotla.South Africa havent enjoyed much success of late, with a T20 series loss against Australia heading into the world event, where the side have lost two of their three matches so far.Its an unfortunate situation that we have found ourselves in. Certainly as a team we havent played our best cricket, admitted Amla. With Amla, AB de VIlliers and Dale Steyn, the Proteas have seen the golden generation fail to claim a global title. Amla assures the big boys will hang around for a while.Lot of us feel we have a few more years left in us, so the Champions Trophy is next year and it would be great if we could make to the next World Cup, that will be ideal, said Amla.We take it as it comes. As long as you are fit and healthy, scoring runs and the form is good and you want to perform for the team then you can make it, he added. With the chokers tag hanging around their necks after a series of narrow defeats in the last two decades, South Africa didnt do their reputation any good after going down in crunch games this time around. The Proteas hopes of clinching a first international trophy were dented in their opening match, when England chased down a record 230 runs to win. They survived a scare to beat minnows Afghanistan by 37 runs, but lost a thriller when the West Indies successfully chased 123 with just two balls to spare, and Sri Lankas defeat to England on Saturday sealed their fate.We havent had a game where our batting and our bowling has clicked in the same game consistently enough and that has been our biggest downfall, Amla said.

Afghanistan's Stanikzai hails historic win over Windies

Posted:

NAGPUR (AFP) - Afghanistan skipper Asghar Stanikzai hailed his underdog side after their historic six-run victory over the powerful West Indies at the World Twenty20 match in Nagpur on Sunday.Afghanistan had failed to qualify for the semi-finals heading into Sundays match, but were determined to take home a consolation victory against the West Indies, who had already made the final four.Stanikzai paid credit to his never-say-die charges especially batsman Najibullah Zadran, named man-of-the-match, after Afghanistan notched up their first ever Super 10 victory at a World T20. Stanikzai said his side, who had lost three straight group stage matches, had learnt so much at the T20 and would now head home and work on our weaknesses. We knew the conditions but the bowlers and fielders played very well. We know about our teams strengths, we have experienced so much at this WT20.After being sent into bat, Stanikzais side posted a respectable 123/7, with Najibullah smashing an unbeaten 48 against the 2012 World T20 champions. The West Indies, who had a perfect record heading into the match with three straight wins, warned that they were not going to let up against Afghanistan. But their run chase got off to a shaky start, with opener Evin Lewis dismissed for a duck, and some excellent Afghanistan spin bowling led by 17-year-old Rashid Khan (2-26) meant the wickets kept falling. With the West Indies needing 10 runs from the final over, Najibullah sprinted several metres along the boundary to take a spectacular, tumbling catch and claim Carlos Braithwaite for 13, just when he looked like bringing the West Indies home, as he had done against South Africa on Friday.Samuel Badree and an injured Andre Fletcher could only manage to push the total to 117 in the three remaining deliveries.Despite the loss, the West Indies still finished top of Group One, and will play either Australia or India, who clash later Sunday in Group Two, in the semi-finals.Captain Darren Sammy said the loss would not derail his sides campaign for the title, describing the loss as a banana skid on the road to the finals. Obviously we are disappointed but we are not going to let this dampen our spirits, we played well, we just need to find a way to chase down those small totals, he said.We have two more steps to take, and we just had a slight banana skid in the race, and we just have to regroup and come back again. After being sent in to bat, Najibullah top scored for Afghanistan, striking four fours and one six in his 40-ball knock to bring cheers from the small but vocal crowd.Afghanistan had lost all of their previous Super 10 matches, but they have won new admirers in India with their aggressive and carefree brand of cricket that has caused some anxious moments for their opponents.Opener Mohammad Shahzad made a confident 24, but was caught off leg-spinner Badree, trying to heave over the infield, just as he was looking exciting.Asghar Stanikzai also made a handy 16. The skipper shuffled down the wicket to smash a six over long on, but was caught the next ball by Dwayne Bravo off Badree attempting the same shot.As the wickets started to tumble thanks to some strong fielding, 23-year-old Najibullah held his nerve, guiding Afghanistan past the 120 mark and to what proved a winning total.

Mortaza blames ICC ban for Bangladesh T20 exit

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza on Sunday blamed the ICCs suspension of two of its key bowlers for illegal actions for his sides exit from the World Twenty 20.Bangladesh were bundled out of the tournament after four straight losses in the Super 10 group stage -- including a crushing 75-run defeat to New Zealand on Saturday. But Mortaza said they were hobbled by the International Cricket Councils (ICC) decision to bar key pacemen Taskin Ahmed and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny early in the group stages.Bangladesh, whose side finished runners-up to India in the Asia Cup just before the World T20, made a failed frantic appeal to the ICC to have Taskins suspension overturned. In the last eight matches, Taskins economy rate was the best in the world. So it was always difficult to lose him, Mortaza said at Dhaka airport after returning home. The way he was bowling, we had our plan set around him. We had to change the entire game plan. Before the Australia game when he was banned we could not hold our emotions due to this shock. We accepted that Sunnys action has problems. Even Sunny himself accepted it. But Taskins ban was a complete shock for us, he said.Bangladesh qualified for the group stages after commanding wins over the Netherlands and Oman, and Mortaza said the tournament had been a good learning experience. From now on, whoever we face, if we dont keep making small mistakes, it will not be easy to beat us. This is what I believe. We could not do this in Twenty20 in the past.

England's Roy, Willey fined as emotions spill over at T20

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - England opener Jason Roy and fast bowler David Willey have been fined at the World Twenty20 after emotions spilled over during their win over Sri Lanka on Saturday. Both players gave solid performances during Englands nailbiting 10-run victory over Sri Lanka in New Delhi to secure a place in the semifinals. But Roy was fined 30 percent of his match fee for swearing and then throwing his bat and helmet upon leaving the field, after being given out lbw for 42 off 39 balls. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Sunday that Roy had shown dissent at an umpires decision during an international match.Willey, meanwhile, who took 2-26, was fined 15 percent of his fee after giving a colourful send-off to Milinda Siriwardana when the Sri Lankan was dismissed immediately after hitting the seamer for six. The ICC said he breached the code of conduct for actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman on their dismissal. Both players admitted the offences during a meeting with match referee Jeff Crowe, the ICC said in a statement.England are now likely to face New Zealand in a semi-final encounter in Delhi on Wednesday, with the West Indies having already qualified from their group.

Football: 'He made us champions' - Barcelona pays homage to Cruyff

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - It was Johan Cruyff who made us champions, wept long-time Barcelona fan Jose Gilabert Cortina, a retired printer who joined the thousands of fans who came to the Camp Nou on Saturday to pay tribute to the Barca legend.Dutchman Cruyff, who first moved to Barcelona from Ajax Amsterdam in 1973, died on Thursday in his adopted city aged 68 after a five-month battle with lung cancer. When he arrived as a player 43 years ago I came to all the matches for the sheer entertainment he provided, recalled the bespectacled 69-year-old.We were a team of losers, it was 14 years since wed won the Liga and he changed everything. You would have thought that football had been transformed into another sport, he recalled with tears in his eyes like many of his generation who mixed with the international crowd including Spaniards, Chinese, Japanese and Moroccans who came to the special condolence area opened by the club at the Camp Nou.Cruyffs debut in 1973 was like a revelation, recalled 74-year-old retired taxi driver Fidel Diaz Fernandez.Style and freedomThe style and freedom with which the 1.80 metre athlete with blue eyes and a Beatles haircut played was a breath of fresh air during a time when Spanish dictator Franco was still in power.Franco was still in power and you couldnt wear long hair at that time without being taken for a transvestite. Cruyff did it, said Fidel. He was always inventing something, recalled 70-year-old composer Franck Charles, particularly of Cruyffs time as a coach from 1988 to 1996. I remember a lovely phrase that he said to the players before they took to the pitch: guys have fun. And they had funToday its Messi who resembles him the most. Like Cruyff said theres no need to run a lot to control the game and Messi doesnt run much.Suddenly, Fidel, the former taxi driver with grey hair, begins to laugh loudly as he recalls Cruyffs legendary goal against Atletico Madrid in 1973 when the striker leapt into the air, twisting his body to score as he faced away from goal. And it amuses him now to see top officials from Barcelonas eternal rivals Real Madrid - such as president Florentino Perez - come to pay tribute to the player who changed the face of football, 43 years after Reals humiliating 0-5 home loss. When Cruyff arrived at Barcelona the team were second bottom in the league. But they won 17 games in a row to win their first La Liga title in 14 years. The relationship between player, club and fans became even stronger after he took over as head coach in 1988.In an eight-year spell in charge he won four consecutive league titles, and Barcelonas first European Cup in 1992.Catalan DutchHe was a Dutchman more Catalan than a lot of Catalans, recalled Franck, noting Cruyffs insistence on naming his son Jordi (the patron saint of Catalonia), a regional name banned at the time by the Spanish administration. He supported the Catalans a lot in their battles, Franck continued.Under Franco, Cruyff was the first to wear the armband bearing the colours of Catalonia as captain, added Jose. That he was pro independence or not, I dont know, but he was clearly for a self-determination referendum for the Catalans to decide their future. On front of the cameras, the president of the region, the separatist Carles Puigdemont, praised Cruyffs ability to bet on the collective talent. On behalf of the country, thank you for all Catalans. At the end of the day, Barcelona said that more than 15,000 people had visited to pay their respects. The club added that the Cruyff family will also visit on Tuesday afternoon.

Sanders wins Alaska, Washington caucuses

Posted:

SEATTLE (AFP) - Bernie Sanders won the Democratic caucuses in Alaska and Washington on Saturday, giving his campaign a much-needed boost as he seeks to disrupt Hillary Clintons path to the partys presidential nomination.US networks projected Sanders winning by wide margins in both western states where 117 delegates are up for grabs -- 101 in Washington and 16 in Alaska. The Vermont senator and the former secretary of state were also facing off Saturday in Hawaii, where 25 delegates are at stake. The results for that contest were expected later in the evening.Appearing at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, Sanders said his victories in two of the three caucuses where voters turned out in high numbers showed that the tide was turning in his favor. We are making significant inroads in Secretary Clintons lead and we have ... a path toward victory, he told a cheering crowd.US networks projected Sanders winning 79.2 percent against 20.8 percent for Clinton in Alaska. In Washington, he was projected to win 74.6 percent against 25.1 for Clinton. What momentum is about is in election after election, winning the overwhelming percentage of young people who are participating, Sanders told his supporters in Wisconsin. And by young, I dont mean just the very young. The older you get, the younger the age appears.A win for the Vermont senator in the trio of western caucuses would bring momentum to his campaign as he seeks to dent Clintons lead in the race to their partys nomination.Going into Saturday, Clinton had already amassed 1,711 delegates, including super-delegates who are unelected by voters, compared to 952 for Sanders, according to a CNN count.Political revolutionTo win the Democratic nomination, 2,383 delegates are needed.Sanders, 74, gave a rousing rendition of his standard stump speech late Friday in Seattle, railing against police brutality, a too-low minimum wage, soaring student debt and other ills.Real change historically always takes place from the bottom on up when millions of people come together, Sanders said to applause and cheers from the crowd in the citys Safeco Field baseball stadium. We need a political revolutionBy contrast, Clinton has already shifted her focus toward Novembers general election. She delivered a somber counterterrorism speech Wednesday in the aftermath of deadly attacks in Brussels, using it as an opportunity to launch vigorous assaults on Republican candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and warn their reckless foreign policies would harm US interests. We need to rely on what actually works, not bluster that alienates our partners and doesnt make us any safer, she said.Despite the huge gap with Clinton that he needs to fill, Sanders has refused to throw in the towel, repeatedly stressing that his grassroots campaign is heading all the way to Julys nominating convention in Philadelphia.A series of recent polls has shown Sanders consistently doing better than Clinton against Republicans Trump, Cruz and Ohio Governor John Kasich.Saturdays three contests are caucuses, essentially neighborhood meetings where voters can discuss political platforms and debate the merits of the candidates.Since they generally require voters to show up in person rather than mailing primary ballots, the format favors Sanders, whose supporters have consistently shown more grassroots enthusiasm.Millennials and first-time voters have been flocking to Sanderss message of economic equality, universal health care, and his call to reduce the influence of billionaires on the campaign finance system. But the delegate math still dramatically favors Clinton.According to RealClearPolitics poll averages, in the remaining states with the three largest delegate allocations -- California, New York and Pennsylvania -- Clinton leads Sanders by nine points, 34 points and 28 points respectively.

Pakistani fans' 'well done' for Amir while shame for others

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Pakistani fans were seen chanting ‘shame shame’ to the players at the airports as the national cricket team arrived back in the country late Saturday night. The national cricket team’s elimination from the ICC World Twenty20, and more so a stinging defeat at the hands of India once again, weigh heavily on the hearts of the nation. But amidst all the blames and demeaning slogans for others, some fans at the airport showed respect and admiration for the left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir, saying ‘well done sir’.@faizanlakhani Amidst shame slogans Amir is given respect.Slogans agst @MHafeez22 @Umar96Akmal @iamAhmadshahzad pic.twitter.com/OTEBPFiXEE— manu (@Imaan_hamxa) March 26, 2016 Sitting in the teams bus, Amir acknowledged the gesture with a quick salute and a wave from the window. After a match-fixing ban of 5 years, the Pakistani bowler seemed determined to prove himself upon his return to the team, and indeed he has.Amir’s bowling spell against India in Asia Cup earlier left many in amazement, with the young gun dismissing Indian batting giants including Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane in the very first over of the match and then went on to oust Suresh Raina as well. Other Indian batsmen appeared to be flabbergasted as to how to handle his deliveries. The 23 year old proved his mettle and won the hearts of millions with his bowling attack.Even Indias feisty batsman Virat Kohli was seen commending the young player. Kohli even went further and said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had taken a good decision for accepting him back into the squad. Kolhi lauded the youngster saying had he not been banned for 5 years, he would have been amongst the top 3 bowlers of the world.Despite an overall poor performance by the team in the World T-20 tournament, Amir’s bowling stats speak for themselves and the fans aspirations with him don’t appear to be fading anytime soon.

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Two brothers who dabbled in crime, a freelance journalist, a university drop-out and a mystery man -- the five suspects in Belgiums airport and subway train attacks are a mixed lot.Two of the men blew themselves up at the Brussels airport, a third inside a metro train, killing 31 people and injuring 300 on March 22.A fourth suspect was charged Saturday with terrorist murder and identified by the federal prosecutors office only as Faycal C.A fifth man remains on the run. Here are brief profiles of the five:Faycal C, or Faycal CheffouFaycal C, believed to be the man in a hat pictured in CCTV footage alongside the two airport bombers, but whose device did not go off, is the first person to face terrorist offences over the bloodiest attacks ever to strike the symbolic capital of Europe.Sources close to the inquiry told AFP he was Faycal Cheffou, an independent journalist who was accused by the Brussels mayor last year of trying to recruit extremists among refugees and who can be seen on YouTube in 2014 demanding the authorities respect the rights of asylum-seekers.He was arrested late Thursday close to the federal prosecutors office with two others when tailed by police, and has been charged with taking part in a terrorist group, terrorist murder and attempted terrorist murder.Police searched his home but found no explosives or weapons.Najim LaachraouiMoroccan-born Najim Laachraoui, 24, has been identified as one of the two airport suicide bombers and is believed to have been the bomb-maker for Novembers attacks in Paris. He is described as having been a good student with a good disciplinary record, and friends and family remember an easy-going youngster who liked playing frisbee and football. In 2012 he enrolled for a first year electro-mechanical engineering course at Brussels Free University (ULB) but failed to sign up for a second year.He was a practising Muslim, whose radicalisation shocked the family. When he told them in 2013 he was heading to Syria they contacted the police. He resurfaced in September, two months before the Paris attacks, when he was stopped by police on the Austria-Hungary border. He was travelling with Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam and using the false identity of Soufiane Kayal.Investigators have found traces of Laachraouis DNA on explosives used in the Paris gun and suicide bomb assaults, as well as at hideouts and a suspected bomb factory in the Schaarbeek district of Brussels.Ibrahim El BakraouiThe 29-year-old was one of the two airport suicide bombers and is the brother of Khalid, who blew himself up on a train at Maalbeek metro station in the Belgian capital.Long before, the two lived the lives of small-time Brussels hoodlums, piling up convictions for carjackings, robberies and shoot-outs with police.Baby-faced Ibrahim was handed a nine-year sentence in 2010 after a gunfight with police. He took part in a bungled robbery at a Western Union office in which an officer was shot and wounded. After his release from prison in 2014 he went to join the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria or Iraq.Turkey said it had detained Ibrahim in June last year as a foreign terrorist fighter and then deported him to the Netherlands, but that Belgium failed to confirm his links to terrorism.Ibrahim, who is seen on the CCTV footage with two others pushing airport trolleys with their bomb-laden bags, left a confused and scared message on an abandoned computer, according to the Belgian federal prosecutor.Hunted everywhere... no longer safe, Ibrahim said in the message. I dont know what to do.Khalid El BakraouiHis younger brother Khalid, 27, who blew himself up at Maalbeek station just a short walk from the main EU institutions, was a convicted carjacker, receiving a five-year sentence in 2011.On an Interpol terrorism list, Khalid is suspected of having rented a flat under a false identity in the Forest district of Brussels that was raided by police on March 15.It was as a hideout months earlier for the Paris team and he was thought to have rented other properties used to prepare the Paris attacks, including one in the southern Belgian city of Charleroi from where ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud set off to spearhead the assault. The fifth manA man caught on CCTV footage at the metro station talking to the train bomber remains on the run.

England down Sri Lanka in thriller to make World T20 semis

NEW DELHI, (AFP) - England qualified for the World Twenty20 semi-finals and knocked holders Sri Lanka out after a nailbiting 10-run victory in their do-or-die showdown in New Delhi on Saturday.Jos Buttler smashed 66 in a 37-ball knock as England posted a commanding total of 171 for four that ultimately proved too much for Sri Lanka despite a brave, undefeated innings of 73 by injured skipper Angelo Mathews.England are now likely to face New Zealand in a semi-final encounter in New Delhi on Wednesday having also defeated South Africa and Afghanistan in the group stages. After the West Indies also qualified for the last four from Group 1 on Friday, Sri Lanka have no chance of progressing further although they do have one final match against South Africa.Buttler, who hit eight four and two sixes, shared in a fourth-wicket partnership of 74 with skipper Eoin Morgan (22) as Sri Lankas bowlers struggled to contain a late England onslaught at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. But after having Sri Lanka on the ropes at 15 for four, they were then made to sweat for their victory with Mathews hammering Englands spin bowlers to all corners despite struggling with a leg injury.Mathews hit five sixes and three boundaries in a 54-ball innings that had Englands fans with their hearts in their mouths. He received crucial support from Chamara Kapugedera who hit 30 while Thisara Perera (20) and Dasun Shanaka who struck 15 off nine balls to take the contest down to the wire.Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were on the receiving off some fiercesome hitting from the Sri Lankans, with both men conceding 21 in a single over. But Joe Roots stunning catch at mid-off to dismiss Shanaka off the bowling of Chris Jordan in the 19th over proved crucial as Mathews then began running out of partners. With Sri Lanka needing 15 from the last six balls, allrounder Ben Stokes conceded just four runs to clinch the England victory.Sri Lanka eventually made 161 for eight in their 20 overs.Englands innings got off to a poor start when Alex Hales, back in the team after a back injury, was given out lbw off the bowling of the veteran Rangana Herath with only four on the board.Rookie spinner Jeffrey Vandersay was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, taking two for 26 in an economical four-over spell in which he took the wickets of both Jason Roy and Root. But powerful hitting from Roy, who made 42 off 39, and Root (25) began to turn the match in Englands favour before Buttler then stepped on the accelerator.Stokes finished the England innings off with a six before then starring with the ball.He was the pick of the England bowlers, conceding just 19 runs in his four overs. Liam Plunkett also impressed with figures of one for 23.
