Federal secretary in trouble over notification

ISLAMABAD, July 26: The federal government relegated Establishment Secretary Sohail Ahmed to a sinecure post of 'officer on special duty' on Tuesday, about two hours after he had submitted to the Supreme Court a notification transferring Hussain Asghar, the IG of Gilgit-Baltistan, back to the Federal Investigation Agency in the face of a stern court warning of immediate action against him on contempt of court charge for not complying with its orders.
 
Mr Sohail Ahmed had been asked by the court on Monday to appear the following day along with the notification transferring Mr Asghar back to the FIA to enable him to resume the Haj scam investigation. When the five-judge bench was informed by the secretary that the summary was still lying with the competent authority, the court gave him a few hours to either produce the notification or face the music...

ISLAMABAD, July 26: A seemingly reluctant top government official submitted to the Supreme Court on Tuesday a hurriedly prepared notification transferring Hussain Asghar back to the Federal Investigation Agency to resume investigation into the unprecedented mismanagement in last year's Haj operations.
 
Mr Asghar was investigating the Haj scam as FIA director before he was promoted by the government and sent to Gilgit-Baltistan as Inspector General of Police in an apparent move to slow the pace of Haj scam probe because it involves a number of influential people...

NEW DELHI, July 26: Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar arrived here on Tuesday hoping to engage India over the Kashmir dispute and other issues, but Kashmiri representatives who met her said that ending Pakistan's internecine strife was equally important to them.
 
Ms Khar will hold talks with her Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna on Wednesday, hoping the two countries can "move forward" as good neighbours with a stake in each other's future...

LAHORE, July 26: The PML-N has threatened 'direct action' against the federal government for violating superior courts' verdicts, while the PPP believes that the opposition party is using the 'judicial card' to undermine it.

Pakistan vulnerable to another disaster: Oxfam

ISLAMABAD, July 26: Pakistan has failed to invest in prevention measures since last year's floods that killed 1,750 people and is vulnerable to another disaster this monsoon season, Oxfam said on Tuesday.
 
The relief agency marked one year since the beginning of the 2010 disaster, when flooding inundated a third of Pakistan, by calling for more to be spent on reconstruction, suitable housing and early-warning systems...

Process of 3G licence auction begins today

ISLAMABAD, July 26: The government is all set to begin the open auction process of the much delayed third generation (3G) telecom licences on Wednesday with the approval of the bidding plan. The auction is estimated to yield around $1 billion in revenue.
 
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is to preside over a meeting of the federal cabinet, which is expected to also approve a Rs65 billion capital injection into the power sector to minimise loadshedding in Ramazan and ease out entire energy sector from chronic circular debt, besides clearing laws to penalise thieves and saboteurs of gas, power and oil infrastructure and installations...

Republican bill targets Pakistan aid

WASHINGTON, July 26: Republicans in the House of Representatives have presented a foreign aid bill that restricts US taxpayer dollars to Pakistan if it should refuse to cooperate in the US effort against terrorist threats.
 
The legislation released on Tuesday also would ban giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information, an effort to reverse Obama administration policy...
