Pakistan, India revive search for enduring dialogue process

NEW DELHI, July 27: The foreign ministers of India and Pakistan revived the pursuit of an 'uninterruptible' dialogue process on Wednesday though both sides were aware of a nagging hurdle — their wavering trust.

SC criticises demotion of secretary for obeying court

ISLAMABAD, July 27: Visibly piqued by the unexpected demotion of a top bureaucrat for obeying its orders, the Supreme Court directed the attorney general on Wednesday to personally convey to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani the court's feelings and explain constitutional implications of a deviation from the court's orders.
 
"Under the Constitution, if the court passes orders it should be complied with and no approval of any authority in the executive is required for its implementation," observed a five-judge bench hearing a case relating to the unprecedented mismanagement in last year's Haj operations...

Nawaz elected party chief: PML-N alters stance on new provinces

ISLAMABAD, July 27: Nawaz Sharif began his new term as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-N on Wednesday by giving up his party's resistance to demands for the creation of new provinces.
 
"Creation of new provinces is not a bad thing. However, it should be done on administrative grounds," Mr Sharif said in his speech after being declared 'elected unopposed' as the PML-N president after a gap of 10 years at a meeting of the party's Central General Council in a jam-packed Convention Centre here...

Judges vow to defend rule of law

Kashmiri leader freed on bail

WASHINGTON, July 27: Kashmiri leader Ghulam Nabi Fai's lawyers submitted the bond money on Wednesday after a US federal court accepted their plea to release him on bail.
 
On Tuesday, Judge Thomas Rawles Jones ordered Mr Fai's release on a personal bond of $100,000, rejecting the prosecution's plea to keep him in prison because of flight risks. But he also ordered to put Mr Fai under house arrest and electronic monitoring...

$96m required for flood recovery: FAO

ISLAMABAD, July 27: The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced on Wednesday that it required $96 million for its early recovery programme to support an additional 430,000 farming households in 14 flood-hit districts of Pakistan over the next two years.
 
Despite some successes, much remains to be done to restore rural livelihoods and to significantly reduce vulnerability, improve food production and income generation, and increase the resilience of rural communities to future shocks, FAO said in a statement to mark the anniversary of last year's devastating floods...

WASHINGTON, July 27: A House of Representatives panel has approved a $47.2 billion bill that would cut US foreign aid and restrict assistance to Pakistan.
 
Members of the House Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations unanimously approved the legislation on Wednesday. The bill would provide money for the next budget, beginning Oct 1, and is $8.6 billion less than the current amount...
