PPP, allies decide not to back off

ISLAMABAD, July 28: Partners in the ruling coalition decided on Thursday to defend the 'supremacy of parliament' and not to back off on the crucial issue of the authority of the executive.
 
According to sources, the decision was taken at a meeting of leaders of the coalition parties at the presidency. It lasted for two and half hours and was jointly presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani...

ISLAMABAD, July 28: The government has conceded playing a key role in prolonging economic recession in the country by repeatedly cutting down the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), resulting in energy and water shortages and unemployment in the country.
 
To partially overcome some of the lasting and negative impacts of national recession, the government is now considering privatising some of the major projects through outright sale or through Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode on Built to Operate and Own (BOO) basis...

KOHAT, July 28: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Thursday that the opposition was trying to derail the PPP-led government before the next year's Senate elections but expressed the confidence that coalition partners would thwart any "conspiracy against democracy".
 
He was addressing the foundation-stone laying ceremony of a bridge to be built on the Indus linking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab at Khushalgarh. The bridge, to be built under the supervision of the National Highway Authority, is expected to be ready in two years and the estimated cost of Rs1.5 billion will be borne by Hungarian oil refiner Mol and the Oil and Gas Development Company...

Misunderstandings with US to be removed, says PM

ISLAMABAD, July 28: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Thursday that Pakistan was ready to sort out its fractured relationship with the US, adding the move had the backing of the armed forces.

Hina visits saints' shrines in quest for peace

JODHPUR, July 28: Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar visited a revered shrine in India on Thursday where she reportedly prayed to improve ties between the two countries.
 
Ms Khar spent 25 minutes at the shrine of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti. "I prayed for peace and harmony between India and Pakistan," local media quoted her as saying after leaving the shrine in Ajmer in the state of Rajasthan...

Mood at PM Secretariat cool, calm

ISLAMABAD, July 28: With doomsdays having a field day on Thursday predicting a grim scenario because of a perceived conflict between the executive and judiciary, there was an atmosphere of calm at the Prime Minister's Secretariat which has been at the centre of a controversy over the relegation of establishment secretary Sohail Ahmed to a sinecure post of 'official on special duty'.
 
The Supreme Court ordered the government to revert the officer to the secretary's post on Friday.  One question which was doing the rounds in the capital on Thursday centered on the government's reaction to the order...

Justice Javed for avoiding Confrontation

ISLAMABAD, July 28: Justice Javed Iqbal in his parting speech at a full court reference of the Supreme Court on Thursday expressed the desire that there should be no confrontation between the judiciary and the executive.
 
"If there is any such remote possibility, that could be eliminated if all the institutions perform their functions as per the mandate given by the Constitution, interpretation whereof squarely falls within the jurisdictional domain of the Supreme Court and this reality is to be accepted which would be in the interest of democratic system and a source of strength," Justice Iqbal observed, saying the supremacy of parliament hardly needed any elaboration...

Zakat exemption limit doubled

KARACHI, July 28: Zakat exemption limit for holders of savings accounts has been doubled to Rs61,336 from last year's Rs29,385 in a measure expected to provide relief to the salaried class.
 
According to officials, the amount on which Zakat was applicable should be equal to the value of 52 tolas of silver whose price was Rs1,062 per tola in the open market on Wednesday...
