Mirza lashes out at Malik, MQM

KARACHI, Aug 28: Hurling serious allegations against the United States, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and its chief, Dr Zulfikar Mirza announced on Sunday afternoon that he had resigned from the Sindh cabinet, the assembly and as senior vice-president of PPP's provincial chapter.
 
The PPP government was swift to distance itself from Dr Mirza's trenchant diatribe against the MQM. Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters that the views expressed by Dr Mirza were his own and had nothing to do with the PPP...

ISLAMABAD, Aug 28: Whether it is a sheer coincidence or a well-thought out move by Dr Zulfikar Ali Mirza that he chose to speak at length on the killings in Karachi on the eve of a suo motu hearing by the Supreme Court on the law and order situation in the city.
 
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had announced on Friday that a five-member bench would go to Karachi and begin hearing the case on Monday and said, "we have to settle this matter once and for all if we want to save the country"...

MQM assails Mirza, rejects allegations

KARACHI, Aug 28: In what appears to be a cautious and to some extent mild reaction to Dr Zulfikar Mirza's yet another diatribe against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Sunday, the party's coordination committee strongly condemned what it called "inflammatory, malicious and bogus allegations" leveled by him and urged the president and the PPP leadership to clarify their position.
 
Soon after Dr Mirza ended his press conference, the coordination committee held an emergency meeting, simultaneously in Karachi and London, to decide how the party would react...

Attack on train leaves three dead in Balochistan

Austerity steps taken to cut fiscal deficit: Govt imposes ban on appointments

ISLAMABAD, Aug 28: At a time when the country is struggling with slow economic growth and insufficient jobs for youths, the government as part of its austerity measures has placed a ban on new employment for the current financial year.
 
The finance ministry has sent a letter titled 'austerity measures during 2011-12' to the ministries and departments, asking them that there will be a ban on purchase of physical assets, including vehicles, even for development projects, a 20 per cent cut in the travelling allowance, stationery, entertainment, advertisement, repair/maintenance and utilities...

LAHORE, Aug 28: Widespread rains lashed several cities in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday as a fresh, week-long monsoon spell began with prospects of generating flooding in different parts of the country.

Atiyah death report rejected

PESHAWAR, Aug 28: Pakistani security officials expressed doubt on Sunday over reports from the United States that it had killed the Al Qaeda second-in-command near the Afghan border. A senior US official said on Saturday that Atiyah abd al-Rahman had been killed in the northwest tribal area of Waziristan on Aug 22, without divulging the circumstances of his death.
 
However, Pakistani officials in the region told AFP last week that a US drone strike in North Waziristan on that date had killed at least four militants. It was not clear if the two incidents were connected...

3 shot dead at billiard club

MIANWALI, Aug 28: Sectarian tension gripped Darya Khan town of Bhakkar district on Sunday night after two masked men shot dead three youths and injured six others at a billiard club.
 
According to reports reaching here, the attack left nine youths injured and they were taken to the local civil hospital but no doctor was available there. This angered the aggrieved people who ransacked the hospital and torched the office of the medical superintendent. They also burnt a police vehicle...
