Mirza's tirade unacceptable, says PPP

ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: The ruling Pakistan People's Party described on Monday former Sindh home minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza's tirade against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, its chief Altaf Hussain and Interior Minister Rehman Malik as an "unacceptable violation of party discipline", but announced no action against him.
 
"The PPP disowned the accusations made at a press conference by former provincial senior minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza in Karachi on Sunday," presidential spokesman Farhatullah Khan Babar told reporters after a meeting of Sindh PPP leaders, presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency...

Gilani calls for strict adherence to Constitution

ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has stressed upon strict adherence to the Constitution that lays emphasis on a well-defined trichotomy of powers to prevent confrontation among state institutions.
 
"Confrontation between the institutions will never happen if we honour the space guaranteed under the Constitution by never interfering in each other's domain. We ought to honour the Constitution in its entirety," the prime minister said on Monday at the foundation-laying ceremony of a new complex of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) at the Supreme Court auditorium...

Altaf in hospital; UK denies detention

KARACHI / ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said on Monday its chief Altaf Hussain was undergoing treatment in a London hospital after falling ill a week ago.
 
A brief statement issued from London said: "Mr Hussain is under treatment in a local hospital. He fell ill one week ago and was taken to the hospital where doctors are treating him and he is fast recovering."..

SC rejects govt report on Karachi

KARACHI, Aug 29: The Supreme Court rejected on Monday the government's report on targets killings in Karachi and asked the attorney general to place on record reports from intelligence agencies on investigation into the matter.
 
As a five-judge special bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry took up the suo motu case, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq submitted a report of the Federal Investigation Agency, Sindh police's Special Branch and Intelligence Bureau on target killings...

Afghan govt derailed US talks with Taliban

WASHINGTON, Aug 29: US officials confirmed on Monday a media report that the Afghan government deliberately leaked details of the United States' secret meetings with a Taliban emissary, scuttling the US-Taliban talks and sending the intermediary into hiding.
 
Pakistan had also been kept in the dark about the talks, said the original Associated Press report which was later confirmed by senior US counter-terrorism officials who spoke to various US media outlets...
