Qadri sentenced to death for killing Taseer

RAWALPINDI, Oct 1: Mumtaz Qadri, the self-confessed assassin of Punjab governor Salman Taseer, was sentenced to death on two counts for murder and terrorism by a court here on Saturday.
 
Judge Syed Pervaiz Ali Shah, of the anti-terrorism court, announced the verdict after an in camera trial in Adiyala jail. He also imposed a fine of Rs 200,000 on the convict, who would have to undergo one-year imprisonment in case of failure to submit the fine...

'Plot to kill Rabbani hatched in Pakistan'

KABUL, Oct 1: Afghanistan's intelligence agency said on Saturday it had handed Pakistan evidence that the Taliban leadership plotted the recent assassination of former president and government peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani on Pakistani soil.
 
The Afghan interior minister, giving testimony in parliament, also said a mastermind of the plot, Hameedullah Akhondzada, had been arrested. The minister said the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had played a role in the killing...

Talks needed with Pakistan, not Taliban, says Karzai

KABUL, Oct 1: Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has for years pushed for reconciliation with the Taliban, now says attempts to negotiate with the militia are futile and efforts at dialogue should focus instead on Pakistan.
 
The Afghan leader explained in a videotaped speech released by his office on Saturday that he changed his views after a suicide bomber, claiming to be a peace emissary from the militants, killed former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani at his home on Sept 20. UN again sends SOS for the flood-hit

ISLAMABAD, Oct 1: The United Nations has warned that humanitarian agencies are running out of resources to assist those affected by floods in Sindh, even as the need for basic items, shelter and health services increases among more than five million affected people. The UN appeal for $357 million under its "Pakistan flood rapid response plan", launched two weeks ago, has received only $19 million so far, an official said here on Saturday.
 
 "Urgent relief is critical as families continue to suffer in the aftermath of the floods. Unless we receive new pledges to the Floods Rapid Response Plan, millions of people will be left in need of food, clean water and essential medicines for months to come," UN Coordinator for Pakistan Timo Pakkala said..

Kashmir CM apologises for naming rape victims

SRINAGAR, Oct 1: After leader of the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti assailed the government in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, chief minister Omar Abdullah has tendered an apology for revealing in the Legislative Council the names and addresses of more than 1,300 rape victims.
 
The government had recently furnished a list of rape victims since 2005, with their names, parentage and addresses, in a reply to a question moved by a legislator...
