Four suspected Al Qaeda militants held in Germany

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The four men, aged between 22 and 27, were seized Saturday night two days ahead of a ceremony in Bonn to mark Germany&nbsp;s reunification. Their apartments were also searched, said police in Cologne, near to Bonn where festivities Monday were due to be attended by Chancellor Angela Merkel.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The four were &quot;from the Islamist scene&quot;, according to authorities.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;As it could not be excluded that a crime was being prepared with these weapons, the men were arrested as quickly as possible,&quot; police said in a statement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>However, &quot;no weapons or other dangerous objects&quot; were discovered during the searches, police said, adding that they had already released one of the suspects.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Federal prosecutors played down the link to Islamist extremist groups.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;There is neither evidence that the accused had links to terrorist groups nor that there were concrete preparations for an attack,&quot; a spokesman for the Federal Prosecutions Office said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Authorities were at pains to stress there was no danger for forthcoming celebrations.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;A threat to the festivities ... in Bonn from this group of people is ruled out,&quot; police said in a statement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Alongside Merkel, Germany&nbsp;s President Christian Wulff and other notable dignitaries were due to attend the ceremony marking the anniversary of German reunification in 1990.<br />&nbsp;</p>


NATO hits Gaddafi birthplace in Sirte

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Smoke was seen rising on Sunday from the village in Sirte where Moammar Gaddafi was born, as fighters with Libya&nbsp;s new regime said NATO air strikes were hitting the area.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Masoud Jema al-Amari, a fighter from the eastern city of Benghazi, said there had been clashes in the village of Abu Hadi, where Gaddafi was reportedly born in a Bedouin tent in 1942.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;There are a few Gaddafi fighters still in there. NATO asked us to pull back&quot; so they could launch air strikes on the town, on the southern outskirts of Sirte near the local airport, he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Imam Mahmoud Hammoud al-Kaleni, who was seen leaving the village with his family, said fighters from Libya&nbsp;s new regime had told them to urgently leave the area.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;The thwar (fighters) escorted us out. They came to our house and told us we had one hour to leave. They told us it was safe to leave,&quot; he said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fighting between the forces of Libya&nbsp;s National Transitional Council (NTC) and fighters still loyal to Gaddafi was raging in Sirte on Sunday, as streams of civilians fled the besieged city and the international Red Cross warned of a medical emergency.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Anti-Wall Street protesters fight on after 700 arrests

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>US activists decrying corporate greed planned Sunday to fight on near Wall Street after more than 700 protesters were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge as they defied police and stalled traffic.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The activists, many of whom have been camped out in Manhattan for two weeks, were detained Saturday during their biggest demonstration yet against government-backed banking bailouts and corporate influence in US politics.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police said most of those arrested were issued criminal court summons and citations for disorderly conduct before being released later in the day.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Only a &quot;minimal amount&quot; of protesters remained behind bars on Sunday, a New York Police Department spokesman said, declining to provide exact figures.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The &quot;Occupy Wall Street&quot; movement, inspired by pro-democracy Arab Spring movements roiling North Africa and the Middle East, planned to hold more meetings and forums on Sunday a few blocks from the financial district.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Its next march on Wall Street was set for Wednesday afternoon.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>During an impromptu protest to Brooklyn, demonstrators walked up to the bridge, then spreading to not only the pedestrian walkway but also the roadway, bringing traffic to a halt and forcing police to shutter the bridge for several hours.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Another NYPD spokesman said there were &quot;several hundred protesters who decided to walk on the roadway and who blocked traffic. Some heeded the warnings, some left, and arrests were made.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Some of the demonstrators carried hand-drawn placards that read &quot;End the Fed&quot; and &quot;Pepper spray Goldman Sachs&quot; in what police described as a peaceful protest that nevertheless saw hundreds detained for public order offenses.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Claims that British rock group Radiohead would be performing in support of the movement in Manhattan proved false, and activists apologized for what they blamed on &quot;miscommunication&quot; about a &quot;hoax.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The anti-Wall Street activists began their campaign by occupying Zuccotti Park, in the heart of Manhattan&nbsp;s financial district, on September 17 and have since held protests outside the New York Stock Exchange and NYPD headquarters.<br />&nbsp;</p>


35th NA session begin today

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The 35th session of the National Assembly will start today to hold debate on national security situation arising after Pak-US tension. President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned the NA session on the advice of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Although, debate on the national security would dominate in the session, yet routine agenda would also be taken up during its proceedings. Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had also demanded summoning of the National Assembly session to discuss relations with the United States and policy on war against terror.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Prime Minister on the very first day of the session is likely to give a policy statement to kick off the debate on the national security.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar is also expected to inform the House about her meetings in Washington.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The National Assembly session was held in the second week of September but it was prorogued after remaining in session for only one day due to floods in Sindh.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Gilani to chair National Energy Conference today

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>As per media reports, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani convened National Energy Conference and Chief Ministers of all provinces would participate in the conference to view energy saving suggestions already formulated, several important decisions would be taken and proposal of two-days weekly off would be discussed in the conference as well.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Additionally, propositions of switching off lights at 8pm in all the parks and using air-conditioners in the offices before 11am would be discussed in detail in the conference.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Secretary water and power, Imtiaz Qazi said that following disastrous rains of Sindh, the government of Sindh has regretted any further water supply from Mangla and Tarbela dams for its Rabbi crops, as irrigation land was all wet.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He informed that this failure of release of further water from dams, which generated electricity in process, was causing a shortfall of 2500MW of electricity,</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Rejecting the notion of any paucity of water level in dams, he also informed that circular debt regarding revenue owed to oil companies fell at Rs100 billion.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He also informed that government had paid PSO Rs.5 billion in outstandings, and while thermal power station has been resumed with oil supply, he hoped that the issue would be amicably settled in matter of days, decreasing load-shedding duration. <br />&nbsp;</p>


Razzaq to lead Pakistan team for Super Sixes

Pakistan announce Test squad for series against Sri Lanka

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pakistan selectors Sunday night named a 15-member Pakistan squad for the 3-Test match series against Sri Lanka starting with the first Test in Abu Dhabi from October 18. The team was named by Chief Selector Mohsin Khan here at National Stadium during the break in the final National T20 Cup between Sialkot Stallions and Rawalpindi Rams. Murray beats Yound in Thailand Open final

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fourth-ranked Andy Murray claimed his 19th career title in beating American Donald Young 6-2, 6-0 in the final of the Thailand Open at the Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani on Sunday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The top-seeded Briton was in complete control throughout the 48-minute match, exploiting the lack of experience and unforced errors from his 55th-ranked opponent. Young was playing in his first tour final.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Murray opened the match by jumping out to a double break lead of 4-0. Honda's wine Japanese MotoGP

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Honda&nbsp;s Dani Pedrosa kept his cool during an incident-packed Japanese MotoGP on Sunday, easing to victory over reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo by more than seven seconds.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Spain&nbsp;s Pedrosa sealed his third win of the season at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in 42min 47.481sec, while championship leader Casey Stoner, who started on pole, finished third despite ending up in the gravel during the fifth lap.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pedrosa kept his calm throughout the action-packed race which saw five riders crashing out and three others handed ride-through penalties.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But despite his victory, Stoner, who finished more than 18 seconds behind Pedrosa, still leads Lorenzo (Yamaha) in the championship standings by a commanding 40 points with just three races remaining -- in Australia, Malaysia and Valencia.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Stoner was in command early in the race before running off the track and into the gravel on lap five, which saw him drop to seventh.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said his brakes had failed to respond after his bike began shaking but he managed to stay on his Honda and return to the track.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>His Italian teammate Andrea Dovizioso led the race briefly before he had to perform a ride-through penalty for jumping the start.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ducati&nbsp;s Valentino Rossi crashed out on the first lap, dragging along Yamaha rider Ben Spies, who rejoined the race, and also almost taking down Lorenzo.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pedrosa, who finished second in the previous three races, seized his opportunity and powered to the front, steadily increasing the gap with Lorenzo and earned a home victory for his team.<br />&nbsp;</p>

Ogier wins Rally France to cut Loeb's lead

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Citroen driver Sebastien Ogier rekindled his bid for a first world championship title by winning the Rally of France on Sunday while former champion Petter Solberg was controversially disqualified.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Overnight leader Ogier finished six seconds ahead of Spaniard Dani Sordo in a Mini Cooper with Norway&nbsp;s Solberg third, over a minute off the pace, in his privateer Citroen.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But Solberg, the 2003 world champion, was later disqualified when his car was found to be four kilos too light.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We don&nbsp;t understand, we weighed the car many times. It is a catastrophe for Petter and our team because we have already had problems with a budget to finish the season,&quot; team manager Ken Rees said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The decision meant that Ford Focus driver Mikko Hirvonen was promoted to third in the race standings and now has 196 points in the championship standings, the same as leader Sebastien Loeb with two races left in Spain and Great Britain.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The 27-year-old Ogier claimed his seventh rally victory and is three points behind Loeb and Hirvonen.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It was a very long weekend with a lot of pressure,&quot; said Ogier before Solberg&nbsp;s disqualification.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Dani and Petter made life difficult for me, it was hard to take the rally lead and hold it. Woods falls out of top 50 in world ranking

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Woods, who hasn&nbsp;t won in nearly two years, was assured of dropping from the top 50 when Louis Oosthuizen finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the Dunhill Links Championship.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>That ends a streak of 778 consecutive weeks inside the top 50, dating to when Woods was No. 61 on Oct. 13, 1996.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Woods, who has not played since missing the cut at the PGA Championship, returns to competition this week at the Frys.com Open at CordeValle in northern California.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Golf: Hoey holds off McIlroy to win Dunhill Links

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Michael Hoey held off fellow Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by two shots on Sunday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Hoey, who began the week at 271 in the world rankings, carded a final round of 68 for a 22-under-par total of 266 to claim his second European Tour title of the season.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The 32-year-old from Ballymoney had also won the Madeira Open, having clinched his first tour title in 2009 at Estoril.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>McIlroy, the US Open champion, finished with a 65, with McDowell, the 2010 US Open winner, sharing third alongside Scotland&nbsp;s George Murray a further two strokes back.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It hasn&nbsp;t sunk in yet and it won&nbsp;t for a while,&quot; Hoey admitted.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It&nbsp;s taken a long time but I supposed in a weird way you enjoy it more because you have struggled through six goes at the qualifying school.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It&nbsp;s not nice running out of money, being away from home, questioning your swing, and there are points where you wonder &nbsp;Do I want to continue with this.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Hoey, 32, began the final round three ahead of McDowell and five clear of McIlroy, only for McIlroy to card four birdies and an eagle in a brilliant front nine of 30 to move into the lead.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>McIlroy admitted he was disappointed not to have secured his third European Tour title, the 22-year-old playing the first 11 holes in seven-under-par but then failing to pick up another birdie.<br />&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Asian Games flyweight champion Rey Saludar of the Philippines reached the third round of the world championships on Sunday with a confident 28-12 win over Tajik Yusufi Safevidin.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The 23-year-old Saludar, who won bronze at this year&nbsp;s Asian championships, will now face Rau Shee Warren of the United States, who outclassed Ukraine&nbsp;s Georgiy Chygayev 22-15.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mongolia&nbsp;s Tugstogt Nyambayar, the 2009 world championship silver medalist, battled into the third round with a tough 17-14 win over India&nbsp;s Suranjoy Singh Mayengbam, the Asian Games bronze medalist.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Top-seeded Misha Aloian of Russia, who won bronze at the 2009 world championship, was in complete command against Botswana&nbsp;s Oteng Oteng, winning confidently 18-5.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Asian Games light welterweight champion Daniyar Eleussinov of Kazakhstan defeated Japan&nbsp;s Masatsugu Kawachi 14-4 and next meets Hungary&nbsp;s Gyula Kate, the third seed, who beat Canada&nbsp;s Yves Ulysse 27-17.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Asian champion Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg of Mongolia also advanced with a 20-6 win over Lyndel Marcellin of Saint Lucia.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Kazakhstan&nbsp;s two-time welterweight world champion, and Asian Games winner, Serik Sapiyev outclassed Apichet Seansit of Thailand 16-7 forcing the referee to stop the bout in the second round.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Meanwhile, Ukraine&nbsp;s Taras Shelestyuk upset 2008 Beijing Olympics silver medalist Carlos Banteur Suarez of Cuba, 17-15.<br />In the light heavyweight category Cuba team skipper Julio De La Cruz Peraza experienced few troubles against Caner Sayak of Turkey, winning 17-7 in his second-round bout.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Kazakhstan&nbsp;s Adilbek Niyazimbetov produced another upset battling into the next round in a tough bout with Asian champion Hyengkyu Kim of South Korea, winning 14-9.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In the super heavyweights, reigning champion Roberto Cammarelle of Italy, who enjoyed an opening round bye, saw off Venezuela&nbsp;s Jose Payares 17-8.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>China&nbsp;s Zhilei Zhang, the Asian Games gold medalist, also breezed into the third round beating Joseph Parker of New Zealand 15-7.<br />&nbsp;</p>
