Power riots rock Lahore, other Punjab cities

LAHORE, Oct 2: Worsening power crisis not only triggered violent demonstrations in several cities and towns of Punjab on Sunday but also sparked fresh tensions between the provincial and central governments.
 
In Lahore, people burnt an office of the electricity supply company (Lesco) and official vehicles of an SP and a DSP. The DSP and several other policemen were injured while trying to disperse violent demonstrators protesting enhanced power loadshedding. Police used teargas, fired in the air and used batons to beat up people in several areas. In Bahawalnagar, protesters also stormed the house of an MPA...

Afghan agencies behind murder, says FO

ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: Rejecting an allegation levelled by the Afghan interior minister about ISI's involvement in the assassination of Prof Burhanuddin Rabbani, Pakistan indicated on Sunday that Afghan security agencies might be involved in this and other such killings.
 
A statement issued by Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua termed the Afghan minister's allegations 'baseless'...

Fiery NA response to US, Kabul likely

ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: A fiery response to the latest US and Afghan charges against Pakistan's main spy agency is expected to come from the National Assembly, which begins a new session on Monday.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the Pakistanis have a point when they say that Pakistan alone did not create the Haqqani network, which is now killing American soldiers in Afghanistan.
 
Also on Sunday, the former US military chief, Admiral Mike Mullen, said that attacks on US soldiers in Afghanistan had caused him to blame Pakistan for backing the militants who were behind those attacks...

Govt will talk to anyone who 'decommissions' himself: PM

LAHORE, Oct 2: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the government is ready to talk to anyone in troubled areas provided he is willing to "decommission" himself. He said he was avoiding to use the word 'surrender' because it was against tribal culture and traditions.
 
Talking to a group of reporters here on Sunday, the prime minister said: "We are ready to hold talks with everybody who is willing to decommission oneself."...

MFN status for India under consideration

RPPs coming in limelight again

ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: The rental power projects (RPPs), taken in hand by the current government as an emergency measure to end loadshedding by December 2009, are again coming in the limelight as the authorities move to bring into production two RPPs of 135MW capacity.
