PML-N going for all-out confrontation
-----------------------------------------------------------------
By Amir Wasim & Khawar Ghumman
ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif upped the ante in the policy of confronting the PPP-led government head-on that he now appears to be pursuing when he called upon his party workers on Monday to join the agitation against power outages and to mobilise the street in order to highlight corruption and the government's "failure to resolve the energy crisis".
Mr Sharif gave the call at the first meeting of the party's Central Working Committee (CWC) at the Punjab House. He later chaired a meeting of the PML-N parliamentary party at the Parliament House, giving the go-ahead for protests inside and outside the parliament during the current National Assembly session...

The PML-N provided an impetus to the protests when its workers, as a matter of party policy, joined the demonstrations. MNA Hamza Shahbaz, son of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, is reported to have organised and led some rallies...

Govt vows to ease power cuts in 36 hours
---------------------------------------------------------------
By Raja Asghar
ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: After opposition protests opened the National Assembly's autumn session, the government told the house on Monday evening that the intensity of power cuts that provoked violent demonstrations in the Punjab province over the past two days would ease off in up to 36 hours.
But despite the assurance by a minister about the improvement in the power crisis after the payment of Rs11 billion in arrears to two private power companies and a speech by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani about other opposition concerns, opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan seemed unimpressed and threatened more protests by his Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party in coming days, particularly against the prime minister's refusal to disclose proceedings of Thursday's all-party conference he had convened mainly to discuss the latest US allegations against Pakistan's top spy agency, ISI...

In a letter to Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar, the Adviser to Transparency International Pakistan, Syed Adil Gilani, said the Expression of Interest (EOI) for privatisation of the nine power stations appeared to be another effort by the Private Power and infrastructure Board (PPIB) to circumvent PPRA Ordinance 2002 and Public Procurement Rules, 2004...
