Measures taken to execute SC order, Qaim tells Zardari

ISLAMABAD, Oct 8: President Asif Ali Zardari seemed keen on the implementation of a Supreme Court judgment concerning the state of law and order in Sindh, especially Karachi, when he met top provincial functionaries and the government's legal wizards on Saturday.
 
The president had convened the meeting "to know about the steps that had so far been taken by the Sindh government for implementation of the order", his spokesman Farhatullah Babar said about the discussion at the presidency in what was the first reaction to Thursday's ruling after suo motu hearings by a five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry...

Ties with Pakistan vital to security, says US

WASHINGTON, Oct 8: Ties with Pakistan remained vital to US national security, the White House said on Friday as the State Department pledged to continue to work with Islamabad to defeat terrorism.

Police appointments to be a test case

ISLAMABAD: Future appointments in the Sindh Police will soon become a test case for the provincial government in view of the Supreme Court's strictures against the provincial police in its judgment on the Karachi violence.
 
Despite the federal government's assurance of implementing the Oct 6 Supreme Court ruling in letter and spirit issued after suo motu proceedings on senseless killings in Karachi, maintaining strict impartiality among the police force for a better result would truly be an uphill task...

Interest rate slashed by 150bps to 12pc

KARACHI, Oct 8: The State Bank slashed the policy interest rate by 150 basis points to 12 per cent for two months on Saturday, hoping to provide cheaper credit to private sector in the wake of falling inflation and reduced government borrowing during the first quarter of the current financial year.
 
The SBP's monetary policy for October-November stated that the bank had decided to cut the interest rate after taking "some comfort from declining inflation and high probability of meeting the FY12 (2011-12) inflation target", together with a need to support private sector credit and investment growth...

Karzai asks US to step up pressure on Pakistan

Saleh says he will resign soon

Virus affects drones system

WASHINGTON, Oct 8: A computer virus that captures the strokes on a keyboard has infected networks used by pilots who control US drones flown on the warfront, according to a magazine report.
 
Wired magazine reported that the spyware had resisted efforts to remove it from the computers at Creech base in Nevada, where pilots remotely fly drones in Iraq and Afghanistan...

Weapons seized in capital; 2 held

ISLAMABAD, Oct 8: Police seized a 'huge cache of weapons', including suicide jackets and missiles, and arrested two men from separate places a few kilometres away from the Red Zone in the federal capital on Saturday.
 
Police said a team headed by Sub-Inspector Mohammad Lateef signalled a car to stop at Taramri Chowk but the driver didn't stop the vehicle. However, the police subsequently intercepted it after a brief chase...

Subsidy for Indian Haj pilgrims

NEW DELHI, Oct 8: India's union cabinet has approved the proposal to allow Haj subsidy for 125,000 pilgrims this year under the government's subsidy scheme. Each pilgrim will have to pay Rs16,000 as fare.
 
The number of pilgrims going through the Haj Committee of India is decided by the ministry of external affairs which is the nodal ministry for Haj affairs. The cost of air travel of pilgrims undertaking Haj through the committee is borne partly by the pilgrims and partly subsidised by the government...
