| SBP, Karachi Whites score wins in Quaid Trophy Posted: <p> </p><p>State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) registered an innings and 11 runs win over Karachi Blues at the National Stadium in Karachi.</p><p> </p><p>SBP began the third day leading by 42 runs with four wickets in hand but Raees and Sadaf were able to push it to 86 before Sadaf fell for 50, the third-highest individual score of the game. Two quick wickets followed, but Raees was able to add 36 with last man Saad Altaf before he was last out for 190, having batted one minute shy of seven hours.</p><p> </p><p>Karachi started steadily in their second-innings, but Khalid Latif s dismissal created a sense of panic that Siddiq in particular took advantage of when he trapped Shahzaib Hasan, Javed Mansoor and Tanvir Ahmad lbw of consecutive deliveries. That reduced Karachi to 64 for 6, and though there was some resistance from Wajihuddin and Mohammad Sami, Siddiq wrapped up the match with his fifth wicket as Karachi succumbed for just 113.</p><p> </p><p>Saeed Bin Nasir carried Karachi Whites to a comfortable seven-wicket win over United Bank in Karachi. Following his unbeaten hundred in the first innings, Nasir guided Karachi in their chase of 177 after United Bank had been dismissed for 241 in their second innings. Kashif Bhatti had dismissed the openers with 30 on the board but Nasir and Atif Ali added 107 for the third wicket to put Karachi on course. Atif departed on 45 but Nasir remained unbeaten on 92 with 17 fours to take Karachi home. Saad Sukhail (76) had earlier taken United Bank to 241 from their overnight score of 164 for 6. Legspinner Mansoor Ahmed finished with 4 for 53.<br /> </p> |
| NTC claims gains in Gaddafi hometown offensive Posted: <p> </p><p>National Transitional Council (NTC) forces seized a highway that opens the way to a final assault on a key base of troops loyal to Moammar Gaddafi.</p><p> </p><p>But with thousands of civilians still trapped in the ex-leader s hometown, NTC commanders said they were pacing their advance to evacuate some of those who had not fled and to avoid losses from friendly fire.</p><p> </p><p>The inability to take Sirte, the most important remaining stronghold of Gaddafi supporters, more than six weeks after the capital fell has stalled efforts by Libya s new leaders to set a timeline for elections and move forward with a transition to democracy.</p><p> </p><p>Gaddafi supporters also hold the enclave of Bani Walid, where revolutionary forces have been stymied by a challenging terrain. But the transitional leadership has said it will declare liberation after Sirte s capture because that will mean it holds all of the seaports and harbors in the oil-rich Mediterranean coastal country.</p><p> </p><p>Revolutionary forces began a major attack on Sirte on Friday after a three week siege from the outskirts of the coastal city, during which they said they were giving civilians time to flee. On Saturday, fighters fired rockets into the city from the backs of pickup trucks, though visibility was severely limited by a sandstorm.</p><p> </p><p>Libya s de facto leader, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the head of the governing National Transitional Council, said the battle for Sirte has been "ferocious," with 15 revolutionary fighters killed and 180 wounded on Friday.</p><p> </p><p>"Our fighters today are still dealing with the snipers positioned on the high buildings and we sustained heavy casualties," he said at a joint news conference in Tripoli with Fox and Italian Defense Secretary Ignazio La Russa.</p><p> </p><p>Abdel-Basit Haroun, a revolutionary field commander, said 32 people had been killed in two days of fighting, while the military council in the nearby city of Misrata, which has sent many fighters to Sirte, reported 80 wounded.<br /> </p> |
| Assange, Jemima Khan lead Afghanistan protest in London Posted: <p> </p><p>WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and socialite Jemima Khan led a protest in London Saturday against the war in Afghanistan, 10 years after the United States and Britain went to war against the Taliban.</p><p> </p><p>Organisers the Stop The War Coalition claimed 5,000 people attended the protest in central London s historic Trafalgar Square. London s Metropolitan Police did not give a figure.</p><p> </p><p>"There comes a moment when you have to ask what is more dangerous, terrorism or counterterrorism," Khan, the former wife of Pakistani cricketer turned politician Imran Khan, told the crowd.</p><p> </p><p>"Afghanistan is still the worst place in the world for women to live.... So by any standards, our mission in Afghanistan has failed."</p><p> </p><p>Assange, who is currently under strict bail conditions as he fights extradition from Britain to Sweden on charges of rape, compared journalists and soldiers to war criminals.</p><p> </p><p>"When we understand that wars come about as a result of lies, peddled to the British public and the American public and public all over Europe and other countries, then who are the war criminals? It is not just leaders, it is not just soldiers, it is journalists, journalists are war criminals," said Assange.</p><p> </p><p>Assange, whose anti-secrecy website has published tens of thousands of leaked US diplomatic cables, won the Martha Gelhorn Prize for journalism in June.</p><p> </p><p>Britain is the second biggest contributor of troops in Afghanistan after the United States, with 9,500 troops in the country.</p><p> </p><p>A total of 382 British troops have died there since the beginning of military operations in Afghanistan in October 2001, which were launched following the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington.</p><p> </p><p>Western combat troops are due to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014 but a survey published Thursday showed 57 percent of Britons want them to be withdrawn immediately.<br /> </p> |
| Iran criticizes Turkey over NATO radar base Posted: <p> </p><p>A senior adviser to Iran s supreme leader says Turkey has made a "strategic mistake" by agreeing to allow NATO to station an early warning radar in the country.</p><p> </p><p>The radar is to become part of a missile defense system aimed at countering ballistic missile threats from neighboring Iran.</p><p> </p><p>Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi says Turkey is moving in the wrong direction with its decision in September to host the station. He made the comment in an interview with the semi-official Mehr news agency Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>Safavi is an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a former commander of the Revolutionary Guard.</p><p> </p><p>Turkey claims the shield doesn t target a specific country and had threatened to block the deal if Iran was explicitly named as a threat.<br /> </p> |
| 100 detained in Moscow amid nationalist rally call Posted: <p> </p><p>Police spokesman Anatoly Lastovetsky said some of those detained on Manezh Square were carrying weapons including pistols that fire rubber bullets.</p><p> </p><p>A heavy contingent of police was deployed in and around the sprawling square after calls appeared on the Internet for an unauthorized gathering to mark the death a week ago of an 18-year-old in a nightclub fight between a group of soccer fans and men of Caucasus descent.</p><p> </p><p>Violence between ethnic Russians and people from the Caucasus is frequent.</p><p> </p><p>In December, about 5,000 people chanting "Russia for Russians" gathered at Manezh Square and beat dark-skinned passers-by. | 3 killed in Sri Lankan election violence Posted: <p> </p><p>A police official said former lawmaker Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra and two of his supporters were killed in an intraparty shootout during local council elections. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment to the media.</p><p> </p><p>Another lawmaker from President Mahinda Rajapaksa s ruling United People s Freedom Alliance who was involved in the clash was hospitalized with serious head injuries, Dr. Shavindra Gamage said. | Blast at police station in Yemen kills one Posted: <p> </p><p>A Yemeni military official says a blast at a police station in the country s south has killed one soldier and wounded seven others.</p><p> </p><p>The official says al-Qaida militants are suspected to be behind the attack in the town of al-Qalouaa in Aden province. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.</p><p> </p><p>Al Qaeda-linked militants have seized several towns in southern Yemen, exploiting a growing security vacuum since mass protests calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh began in February.</p><p> </p><p>Demonstrators rallied in the capital, Sanaa, and other cities Saturday against Saleh, who has managed to cling to power despite escalating domestic and international pressure to resign.<br /> </p> |

| Vettel takes pole for F1 Japanese GP Posted: <p> </p><p>Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix on Saturday, putting himself in the perfect place to claim the Formula One championship in Sunday s race.</p><p> </p><p>Vettel extended Red Bull s perfect streak of poles to all 15 races this season, setting a lap of 1 minute, 30.466 seconds at the Suzuka circuit, edging McLaren s Jenson Button by just nine-thousandths of a second. Button s McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton was third fastest despite a mistake which meant he did not set a time in his final run.</p><p> </p><p>"It was a great qualifying for us," Vettel said. "I went off the track yesterday and damaged the wing and that affected us but we were able to get everything out of the car today."</p><p> </p><p>Vettel ran off the track at the end of the first practice session on Friday, damaging the front of his car slightly. He later called the incident a "wake-up call."</p><p> </p><p>Vettel needs only one point in Sunday s race or Button to fail to win to become the sport s youngest two-title winner.<br />It was the 12th pole of the season for the 24-year-old German who has won the last two races here from pole.<br /> </p> |
| Radwanska, Petkovic in China Open women's final Posted: <p> </p><p>Agnieszka Radwanska is seeking her second title in two weeks after reaching the final of the China Open, where she will take on Andrea Petkovic.</p><p> </p><p>Radwanska, the winner of last week s Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, beat Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-4, to improve her career record against the Italian to 3-1.</p><p> </p><p>"I knew she d been playing well the last couple of weeks so I was really focusing on my game from the beginning," </p><p> </p><p>Radwanska said. "I was just happy to close this game in two sets."</p><p> </p><p>The Polish player has won her four previous meetings with Petkovic, including twice this year, but Radwanska said she wasn t expecting an easy time on Sunday.</p><p> </p><p>"It s always very tough and very tight against Andrea," the 11th-seeded Radwanska said. "She s playing very well, very consistent. | Berdych to face Cilic in Beijing final Posted: <p> </p><p>Czech Tomas Berdych outpowered top seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to take a 6-4 4-6 6-1 victory on Saturday and reach the final of the China Open.</p><p> </p><p>He will face Marin Cilic, who deployed his powerful serve to ease past fellow Croatian Ivan Ljubicic 6-4 6-3.</p><p> </p><p>Tsonga was unable to take control of the on-form Berdych, who is one of his rivals in the chase for a spot at next month s World Tour Finals season wrapup in London.</p><p> </p><p>The world number 10 took advantage of 15 Tsonga unforced errors, pounding his way into the final with his eighth ace on match point.</p><p> </p><p>"This final could turn my season from a good one to a really great one," said Berdych. | Finn takes hat trick as England XI wins warm-up Posted: <p> </p><p>Pace bowler Steven Finn claimed a late hat trick Saturday as England XI beat Hyderabad XI by 56 runs in a practice game ahead of a limited overs series against India.</p><p> </p><p>Finn cleaned up the tail to finish with 4-28 as Hyderabad was bowled out for 163 in 36.5 overs in reply to England XI s 219 all out in 47.2 overs.</p><p> </p><p>Earlier, a lively spell by Hyderabad seamer Anwar Ahmed Khan (3-35) made the visitors struggle in the day-night game before Ravi Bopara (73) and Chris Woakes (46 not out) helped post a fighting total.</p><p> </p><p>Bopara struck three fours and a six during his 82-ball knock while Woakes struck four fours in his 59-ball innnings.</p><p> </p><p>Finn took the last three wickets in his eighth over, dismissing Amol Shinde, Kanishk Naidu and last man Khan.</p><p> </p><p>England XI plays another practice game against Hyderabad XI on Tuesday.</p><p> </p><p>The full England team faces India in the first one-day international on Friday in Hyderabad.<br /> </p> |
| Nadal to face Murray in Japan Open final Posted: <p> </p><p>Defending champion Rafael Nadal picked apart American number one Mardy Fish s serve-and-volley game on Saturday to set up a a hotly anticipated final against Andy Murray at the Japan Open.</p><p> </p><p>The world number two from Spain, playing his first ATP tournament since defeat in the US Open final last month, relied on his powerful baseline game to score a 7-5, 6-1 victory.</p><p> </p><p>Second seeded Murray, fresh from victory at the Thailand Open a week ago, breezed by 2007 champion David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3.</p><p> </p><p>The decisive point came in the 11th game of the first set which had until then gone with serve and was poised at 5-5.</p><p> </p><p>Fish saved the first break point of the match with a winner from a backhand approach, but his stroke on Nadal s next advantage point was short, allowing the Spaniard to batter a forehand winner beyond him for 6-5.</p><p> </p><p>It was enough for Nadal to take the first set. He then took the following five games as the American s resolve deserted him.</p><p> </p><p>The match ended with another break when American fourth seed hit an easy forehand high volley into the net at 30-40 in the seventh game.</p><p> </p><p>The 25-year-old Nadal, who did not face a break point in the 95-minute match, stretched his record against Fish to seven wins against one defeat.</p> |
| Mackail-Smith fires Scotland into second place Posted: <p> </p><p>Mackail-Smith first international goal sealed a 1-0 win for Scotland over Liechtenstein in the Rheinpark Stadium.</p><p> </p><p>Craig Levein s side moved above the Czech Republic into second place in Group I after Brighton striker Mackail-Smith marked his first start for Scotland with a first half header that was just enough to see off the minnows in Vaduz.</p><p> </p><p>The Scots, who sit one point ahead of the Czech Republic, lacked a cutting edge for long periods, but they now face world champions Spain in their final qualifier on Tuesday knowing they will secure a play-off berth if they match the Czechs result in Lithuania.</p><p> </p><p>Spain are already through as group winners so Scotland may come up against under-motivated opposition in Alicante, but the quality of Vicente del Bosque s side still makes it a daunting assignment and a draw or defeat would be fatal if the Czechs win.</p><p> </p><p>The Spaniards 2-0 victory over the Czechs on Friday had reignited Scotland s dreams of snatching a play-off place and there was more good news before kick-off as Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher got the green light to captain the side after a quicker than expected recovery from tonsillitis.</p><p> </p><p>Steven Naismith wasted two decent opportunities to open the scoring as the Rangers forward nodded wide from Fletcher s free-kick and then headed straight at Liechtenstein goalkeeper Peter Jehle from Barry Bannan s cross.</p><p> </p><p>In between those two chances, Scotland goalkeeper Allan McGregor was called into action for the first time to push over Thomas Beck s long-range strike.</p><p> </p><p>Phil Bardsley tested Jehle with a powerful effort from distance before the opening goal that Scotland s pressure deserved finally arrived in the 32nd minute.</p><p> </p><p>Bardsley was the provider as he lofted a pass towards Mackail-Smith, who took advantage of poor positioning from Jehle to loop a header over the stranded goalkeeper into the empty net.<br /> </p> |
