Unanimous NA move on power crisis

ISLAMABAD, Oct 10: After a six-day debate, the National Assembly unanimously decided on Monday to set up a special house committee to examine the causes of power shortages and recommend remedies even though the government said there were hardly any outages now after it tackled the recent crisis that provoked nationwide protests.

A motion adopted by the house on a proposal from the PML-N, to which the PPP agreed, authorised Speaker Fehmida Mirza to name the committee soon in a consensus that came despite bitter uproars over two unrelated matters and in a marked contrast to daily PML-N walkouts during the previous fives days of the debate and sit-in outside the presidency to protest against intense power cuts, or loadshedding, in the past week...

ISLAMABAD, Oct 10: The Pakistan People's Party has reacted strongly to what it has termed PML-N's deliberate attempt to derail democracy by dissolving the Punjab Assembly in order to stall the Senate elections scheduled in March next year.

Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh dies at 70

Kasab's death sentence stayed

NEW DELHI, Oct 10: India's Supreme Court on Monday stayed the death sentence handed down to the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, pending an appeal hearing.

"This case has to be heard on top priority," Judge Aftab Alam told the court. "It is the demand of the judicial system that we have to hear this appeal." 300 locomotives out of order

ISLAMABAD: More than 300 of the 500 locomotives of Pakistan Railways are out of order, seriously affecting the service and causing an annual loss of about Rs25 billion.

"The most important earning units in the system, locomotives, have en mass come to almost a grinding halt. Out of the entire fleet of approximately 500 locomotives, the average number of available locomotives at any given time has declined to only 200 from 300 during a short span of only a year. It has brought the entire freight operation to a virtual shutdown," says an official summary of Pakistan Railways...
