| NATO criticizes Pakistan on terror fight Posted: <p> </p><p>NATO is sharply criticizing Pakistan for failing to rein in terrorist and militant groups on its side of the border with Afghanistan.</p><p> </p><p>Top officers of the NATO-led force in Afghanistan say Pakistan needs to do more to rein in militants who are based on its territory but operate in Afghanistan.</p><p> </p><p>Brigadier General Carsten Jacobsen is spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force.</p><p> </p><p>“Pakistan has done a lot against terrorists and insurgents, and paid a considerable price in blood over the last years," said Jacobsen. "There is no question that it is not enough.”</p><p> </p><p>Jacobsen says Pakistan needs to align itself with NATO’s mission by denying militants the ability to regroup on its territory.</p><p> </p><p>“Whether it is Haqqani, or whether it is the Taliban that are looking for safe haven and training facilities in Pakistan, they have to be fought by all of us -- Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the international community," he said.<br /> </p>

| Libya forces derive on centre of Gaddafi hometown Posted: <p> </p><p>Libya s new regime forces were battling block by block towards the centre of Sirte on Monday, eyeing the symbolic prize of finally capturing Moammar Gaddafi s hometown after a month-long siege.</p><p> </p><p>On the diplomatic front, Libya s ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) said it recognises the Syrian National Council grouping opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, becoming the first government, albeit an interim one, to do so.</p><p> </p><p>But Gaddafi diehards were putting up fierce resistance and in their other remaining bastion, Bani Walid, they mounted a fightback, killing 18 NTC fighters and injuring 300.</p><p> </p><p>The interim ruling NTC has been waiting for Sirte s full capture to declare the liberation of the whole of Libya, clearing the way to draw up a timetable for elections.</p><p> </p><p>A column of NTC troops thrust towards central Sirte from positions east along the Mediterranean coast, coming under heavy rocket and small arms fire as they inched forward house by house.</p><p> </p><p>They advanced about a kilometre (1,000 yards) into the city centre from the south and east by the afternoon, backed by heavy shelling and tanks.</p><p> </p><p>"The revolutionaries are less than one kilometre from the central square. We control about 90 percent of Sirte," said Makhluf el-Ferjani of the Sirte military council.</p><p> </p><p>Little more than sniper fire was coming back at them, but at least 18 NTC fighters were killed and dozens more were wounded on Monday.</p><p> </p><p>Meanwhile, an official NTC said that he believes Moammar Gaddafi is hiding in the southwestern desert near the borders with Niger and Algeria, but denied allegations that the Tuareg minority ethnic group is protecting the fugitive leader.<br /> </p>

| Obama concerned at Egypt violence Posted: <p> </p><p>US President Barack Obama is "deeply concerned" about violence in Egypt, the White House said Monday, calling for minority Copts to be protected and stressing the need for timely elections.</p><p> </p><p>White House spokesman Jay Carney issued a statement after clashes in Cairo killed 25 people, mostly Coptic Christians and injured more than 300, sparking fears of widespread sectarian unrest.</p><p> </p><p>"The president is deeply concerned about the violence in Egypt that has led to a tragic loss of life among demonstrators and security forces," Carney said, expressing condolences to loved ones of the dead and injured.</p><p> </p><p>"Now is a time for restraint on all sides so that Egyptians can move forward together to forge a strong and united Egypt.</p><p> </p><p>"As the Egyptian people shape their future, the United States continues to believe that the rights of minorities -- including Copts -- must be respected, and that all people have the universal rights of peaceful protest and religious freedom."</p><p> </p><p>Carney noted the call for an investigation by Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and called on all parties to refrain from violence.</p><p> </p><p>"These tragic events should not stand in the way of timely elections and a continued transition to democracy that is peaceful, just and inclusive," Carney said.<br /> </p>

| Anti-state parties to be banned: Malik Posted: <p> </p><p>Talking to media at the Karachi Airport, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that any party found in anti-state activities or involed in creating law and order situation in Karachi will be banned.</p><p> </p><p>Malik further informed that ban on Peoples Peace Committee was imposed on the request of Sindh government. He said that action against violators of law will be taken.<br /> </p>

| Sohail Tanvirs Nikha ceremony held Posted: <p> </p><p>The Nikha of all-rounder Sohail Tanvir with Komal Khan was held in a simple ceremony in Rawalpindi. Talking to Dunya News, Sohail said that the marriage ceremony will be held next year.</p><p> </p><p>Soon after the airing of the news a woman, named Nausheen, claimed to be his wife and mother of his daughter. When Sohail was contacted for his comments on the claim, he informed that Nausheen was his ex-wife and they have been separated now.<br /> </p>

| Inter-school and Collegiate Games schedule changed Posted: <p> </p><p>The decision was taken in a meeting of schools and colleges secretaries which was chaired by President Punjab Olympic Association Syed Shahid Ali. The meeting decided to change the schedule of the games due to fear of dengue in Lahore.</p><p> </p><p>The Inter-school and Collegiate Games were scheduled to be held from November 1 to 15 in Lahore. According to changed schedule, the games will now be held from November 15 to 19.<br /> </p>

| Ban Ki-moon says Fgypt must protect 'all faiths' Posted: <p> </p><p>UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Monday called on the Egypt s military authorities to defend "all faiths" in the country after clashes in which 25 people, mainly Coptic Christian demonstrators, were killed.</p><p> </p><p>Ban also appealed to all Egyptians to "preserve the spirit of the historic changes" seen in the country this year which inspired the Arab Spring uprisings, a spokesman said.</p><p> </p><p>"The secretary general is deeply saddened by the loss of life in Cairo last night. He appeals to all Egyptians to remain united and to preserve the spirit of the historic changes of early 2011," said UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey.</p><p> </p><p>"He calls on the transitional authorities to guarantee the protection of human rights and civil liberties for Egyptians of all faiths."</p><p> </p><p>Ban said there must be a "transparent, orderly and peaceful transition" in Egypt that includes "free, fair and credible elections leading to the establishment of civilian rule."</p><p> </p><p>Egyptian military prosecutors were questioning 25 people accused of involvement in the Cairo clashes, Egypt s MENA news agency said. Copts had demonstrating against an attack on a church when the violence broke out.<br /> </p>

Family sources of Saba Rao informed Dunya News that family of the accused asked for the hand of victim which was accepted. | String of blasts in Iraq capital kills at least 10 Posted: <p> </p><p>A string of explosions targeting security officials and people who rushed to the scene to help the injured killed at least 10 people in western Baghdad Monday evening, officials said.</p><p> </p><p>The first explosion came from a roadside bomb in a Shiite neighbourhood, targeting an Iraqi army patrol, a police official said. Minutes later, a second bomb exploded nearby, targeting a passing police patrol.</p><p> </p><p>As firefighters arrived on the scene of the first blast, the third bomb went off, an official said.</p><p> </p><p>He said 19 people were also wounded in the attacks. A hospital official confirmed the casualties.</p><p> </p><p>The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.</p><p> </p><p>Violence is nowhere near the peaks seen in 2006 and 2007, but bombings and shootings still occur with regularity.</p><p> </p><p>As US forces prepare to go home by the end of this year, security will rest in the hands of the Iraqi security forces. Some US and Iraqi officials would like to see American forces stay in Iraq into next year to help maintain the fragile stability and train Iraqi troops.</p><p> </p><p>Disagreements over whether to grant the Americans the type of legal protections they are demanding have threatened to derail any plans to have American troops in Iraq past their Dec. 31 departure date.<br /> </p>

| Pakistan hockey team named for Australia tour Posted: <p> </p><p>Chairman selection committee Hanif Khan announced 19-member Pakistan hockey team at the Nasir Bunda Hockey Stadium to participate in the 9-a-side tournament.</p><p> </p><p>The selection committee named Shakeel Abbasi as captain in place of Muhammad Imran for the tournament. Ace penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas, Muhammad Irfan Jr and Muhammad Zubair were also included in the squad. Meanwhile Imran Shah was named as goal-keeper.</p><p> </p><p>Talking to Dunya News, Sohail Abbas said that 9-a-side hockey is just like Twenty20 cricket and there are lot of opportunity for the players to score more goals in this format of the game. Newly-selected goal-keeper Imran Shah said that he has trained very hard and vowed to perform well during the tour.</p><p> </p><p>Chairman selection committee informed that Shakeel Abbasi was named captain of the Pakistan hockey team for Australian tour only as former skipper Muhammad Imran was suffering from malaria. | Former LHC chief justice to defend Mumtaz Qadri Posted: <p> </p><p>The hearing of the appeal against the death sentence of Qadri will be heard by a two-member bench led by Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman.</p><p> </p><p>Former chief justice of Lahore High Court Khawaja Sharif will defend Mumtaz Qadri, the accused killer of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer in Islamabad High Court (IHC).</p><p> </p><p>The panel of Mumtaz Qadri’s lawyers including former LHC chief justice Khawaja Sharif, Justice (R) Nazir Ahmad Ghazi, Justice (R) Mian Nazir Akhtar, Raja Shuja-ur-Rehman, Tariq Dhamial and Habib-ul-Haq, will be appearing before the court. Mumtaz Qadri signed his appeal papers today in Adiala Jail.</p><p> </p><p>Qadri confessed to shooting Taseer dead outside an up market coffee shop close to his residence in the leafy capital Islamabad on January 4. He said he objected to the politician’s calls to amend the blasphemy law.<br /> </p>

| Karachi: Peoples Peace Committee banned Posted: <p> </p><p>According to sources, the ban has been imposed under Section 11(b) of the relevant act. The sources said that the Sindh police have also been informed about the decision.</p><p> </p><p>Now the committee will not be able to carry out its political or any other activities. </p><p> </p><p>The committee has been a source of contention between the PPP and the MQM, with the latter calling the committee a terrorist organisation.
