Kidnapped French woman dies in Somalia

A disabled Frenchwoman who was snatched from her beachfront home at a Kenyan resort island and taken to neighbouring Somalia has died in the hands of her captors, France said on Wednesday.

The foreign ministry said the circumstances of 66-year-old Marie Dedieu s death were not known, but her failing health had probably been a factor.

"This was an act of unqualified barbarism, violence and brutality," Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told reporters.

"We condemn this in the strongest possible terms. We did everything possible to try to obtain her release, we tried to send medication by numerous different channels and apparently these savages could not care less."

The announcement of her death came as Kenyan jets pounded the positions in Somalia of Al-Qaeda linked Shebab militants, who Nairobi blames for a spate of abductions of foreigners.

Kenyan forces launched an unprecedented incursion, which it says has already killed dozens of Shebab fighters, into Somalia this week with the blessing of the Western-backed government in Mogadishu.

"The contacts through which the French government was seeking to obtain the release of Marie Dedieu, held in Somalia since October 1, have announced her death," the French foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Mrs Dedieu s state of health, uncertainty over the conditions of her detention and the fact that the kidnappers probably refused to give her the medication that we sent her lead us to believe that this tragic outcome is unfortunately the most likely," the ministry said.

A gang of 10 armed men seized Dedieu from Manda Island in Kenya s Lamu archipelago earlier this month and fled by sea to Somalia, fighting off an attempt by Kenya s navy to stop them.

There had been serious concern over the health of Dedieu, who was wheelchair-bound after an accident several years ago, recovering from cancer and required medication every few hours.

Turkey launches incursion into Iraq

Turkish soldiers, air force bombers and helicopter gunships launched an incursion into northern Iraq on Wednesday, hours after Kurdish rebels killed 24 soldiers and wounded 18 in attacks along the border.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled a visit to Kazakhstan and held a nationally televised news conference to announce that Turkey had launched the "hot pursuit" operation, wording that officials often use to describe cross-border offensives in northern Iraq.

"We will never bow to any attack from inside or outside Turkey," he said.

Turkey s chief of the military and the interior and defense ministers rushed to the border area to oversee the anti-rebel attacks, and the United States and NATO both issued statements supporting the offensive, the largest in more than three years.

NTV television said Turkish troops have gone some 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) into Iraq and that helicopters were ferrying commandos across the border. Dogan news agency said more than 20 Kurdish rebels were killed in ensuing clashes, but did not provide a breakdown. Neither report identified its sources.

The incursion appeared to be limited in scope. Turkey last staged a major ground offensive against Iraq in early 2008.

Wednesday s offensive began hours after the rebels, who are fighting for autonomy in Turkey s southeast, staged simultaneous attacks on military outposts and police stations near the border towns of Cukurca and Yuksekova.

The Interior Ministry first said 26 soldiers were killed and 22 wounded, but Erdogan corrected those figures to 24 dead and 18 wounded, without explaining the discrepancy. It was the deadliest Kurdish rebel attack against Turkey s military since the 1990s. Dogan news agency said about 200 Kurdish rebels were believed to have launched Wednesday s attacks.

Saleh demands US, EU guarantees to quit

Yemen s embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh said Wednesday he was ready to sign a Gulf-brokered deal for him to quit office but demanded American and European guarantees on a timetable.

"I would sign. But provide guarantees to implement the Gulf initiative," Saleh, reiterating his claimed willingness to leave power after 33 years in office, told a party meeting, Saba state news agency reported.

"We want, first, Gulf guarantees, second, European, and third, American. These three guarantees should accompany the Gulf initiative," he added, standing defiant after nine months of deadly protests demanding his ouster.

"Part of the pressure being exerted now stems from demands that it (the deal) is signed without any conditions and that the time framework (for implementation) be discussed at a later stage," he complained.

Under the terms of the Gulf initiative tabled earlier this year, Saleh would hand power to the vice president 30 days after the signing, and he and his aides would be granted immunity from prosecution by parliament.

A national unity government led by a prime minister from the opposition would be formed, and a presidential election would follow 60 days after Saleh s departure.

"We have said that we are ready to endorse the (Gulf) initiative, but do you not want us to discuss the time framework for its mechanism," added the veteran leader whose presidential term ends in 2013.

He did not elaborate on the timetable he wants.

Oil prices tumble as stock market pulls back

Prices dropped just before trading ended for the day, as stocks headed lower.

Investors found little to cheer about in economic news Wednesday. The Federal Reserve s "Beige Book" report showed only a slight increase in consumer spending last month with the economy expanding modestly in the Fed s 12 bank regions. And the Commerce Department said home builders started new projects at the fastest rate in almost a year and a half. The rate was still far below what economists consider to be a strong housing market.

"There s not much conviction in the market right now," PFG Best analyst Phil Flynn said. "I wouldn t be surprised to see those prices bounce back tomorrow."

The government also had a mixed reading about U.S. oil supply and demand on Wednesday.

The Energy Information Administration said supplies unexpectedly dropped by 4.7 million barrels last week. But the drop didn t mean the U.S. is using more crude. Rather, refineries imported less oil, gasoline and other fuels as demand fell last week. The nation s gasoline supplies fell by 3.3 million barrels last week. The drop comes as Sunoco and ConocoPhillips wind down refineries in Pennsylvania and other refineries slow down for seasonal maintenance.

At the pump, gasoline prices rose 1.5 cents on Wednesday to a national average of $3.474 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Gasoline prices have increased almost every day for nearly two weeks, rising to record levels for this time of year.

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 4.65 cents to end at $2.9812 per gallon. Gasoline futures fell 7.54 cents to finish $2.6715 per gallon. Natural gas rose 3.3 cents to end at $3.586 per 1,000 cubic feet.
