Haqqani has denied dictating the memo while the US says Mullen had hardly taken that seriously.

|

In the 12th minute, Nepal captain Sagar Thapa sent a free kick from inside his own half towards Pakistan s penalty box, where Santhosh Shahu Khala volleyed it directly towards the keeper, who had an easy save to make.

Some early yellow cards were dished out as Pakistan s Samar Ishaq and Jumanu Rai of Nepal got booked for pushing each other. The in the 16th minute, there were appeals for a penalty as Thapa tackled Pakistan s Jadeed Khan Pathan in the penalty box, but the referee signalled a clean tackle.

Then Nepal got a free kick 35 yards out and Sagar Thapa, who scored a long range free kick against Bangladesh, tried the same but Jafar Khan was alert and plucked the ball out of the air.

Nepal then took the lead in the 37th minute as Raju Tamang took a corner from the right. Bharat Khawas, who was stationed at the far post, scissor kicked the ball into the roof of the net from six yards. Nepal s Sandip Rai fouled Kaleem Khan in the penalty box and Samar Ishaq sent the ball to the keeper s right, who got a hand to it but could not keep it out.

In the 60th minute there was a clash of heads as Nepal s Rabin Shrestha collided with Muhammed Rizwan Asif. Play had to be stopped for five minutes and Manzaoor Ahmed came in for the injured Rizwan Asif, who dislocated his right shoulder. Shrestha got a yellow card for his troubles as he got substituted for Bikash Singh Chhetri.

More substitutions were made by both teams but the scores were deadlocked at one-a-piece. Pakistan conceded a free kick just outside the penalty box and Sandip Rai hit the left-hand post from the resulting free kick as Jafar Khan was rooted to the spot.

Then six minutes of added time were awarded, but Nepal managed to hold on to the draw as the referee blew the whistle for full time.

Nepal coach Graham Roberts said he was delighted that the team qualified for the semifinals. Now we have three days to recover before our next match," he added.

Pakistan coach Zavisa Milosavljevic was still hopeful of a semifinal berth despite the odds stacked against them. "Our boys came with very less practice, but still have performed well. We have to play more international friendlies to improve the quality of football," he said.

He also praised the Nepal team saying, "Nepal are very good from defence to attack and they played well."

TEAMS

PAKISTAN: Jafar Khan, Muhammed Rizwan Asif (Manzaoor Ahmed, 65th), Muhammed Ahmed, Kaleem Ullah, Saddam Hussai, Samar Ishaq, Atif Bashir Qureshi, Adnan Farooq Ahmed (Muhammad Adil, 80th), Jadeed Khan Pathan (Faisal Iqbal, 46th), Hasnain Abbas, Kamran Khan.

NEPAL: Kiran Kumar Limbu, Rabin Shrestha (Bikash Singh Chhetri, 67th), Biraj Maharjan, Bijay Garung (Bhola Nath Silwal, 78th), Santhosh Shahu Khala, Jumanu Rai (Anil Gurung, 91st), Sandip Rai, Raju Tamang, Sagar Thapa, Bharat Khawas, Rohit Chand.

Referee: Nagor Aamir (Malaysia)

|
Kuwait emir dissolves parliament; new polls in 60 days Posted:

Kuwait s ruler dissolved parliament Tuesday and set the Gulf nation toward elections, citing "deteriorating conditions" amid an increasingly bitter political showdown over alleged high-level corruption.

The decision by the emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, comes less than a week after he named a new prime minister and parliament sessions were put on hold. Elections must be held within 60 days

which could complicate plans by the Pentagon to station thousands more U.S. soldiers in Kuwait as part of troop shifts around the region after the withdrawal from Iraq at the end of the month.

Kuwait s tensions have roots years before the Arab Spring protests, but opposition factions could be further emboldened by the current push for reforms around the region. Critics of Kuwait s ruling family claim it turns a blind eye to allegations of widespread corruption and uses security forces to crush dissenting voices.

Kuwait s parliament has the most powers of any elected body in the Gulf, and opposition lawmakers openly criticize the ruling family.

Last month, protest mobs stormed into parliament after debate over allegations that government officials funneled payoffs to bank accounts outside the country. Authorities quickly imposed stricter security measures.

"Due to the deteriorating conditions that led to obstruction of process of achievements and threatened the country s higher interests, it became necessary to resort to the people to select their representatives, overcome existing obstacles and realize national interests," said a statement by the emir carried on the official Kuwait News Agency.

Late last month, the emir selected Defense Minister Sheik Jaber Al Hamad Al Sabah as the new prime minister, replacing the long-serving Sheik Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah, who had survived several no-confidence votes in parliament and was the target of opposition groups calling for his dismissal.

Kuwait also has been hit by a wave of strikes that grounded the state airline and threatened to disrupt oil shipments. The tiny Gulf nation has not been hit by major pro-reform demonstrations inspired by Arab uprisings, but Kuwait stands out in the region because of its hardball political atmosphere.

In January, the emir ordered 1,000 dinar ($3,559) grants and free food coupons for every Kuwaiti. Those handouts have been since dwarfed by other Gulf rulers trying to use their riches to dampen calls for political reform.

Saudi Arabia s King Abdullah has pledged about $93 billion for more government sector jobs and services. In September, Qatar announced pay and benefit hikes of 60 percent for public employees and up to 120 percent for some military officers.
Kuwaitis are used to a cradle-to-grave social security system that has increasingly become a burden on the government.
|
