Parliamentary Committee on National Security to meet today

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security will be held under Senator Raza Rabbani, who is Chairman of the Committee to discuss memogate scandal and deadly NATO strikes which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The committee would forward its recommendations to the prime minister. The meeting will also finalise the recommendations for the joint session of the parliament<br />&nbsp;</p>


Muzaffargarh: Seven perish in road accident

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details the van was going to Liyyah from Multan. The van collided with a tractor-trolley parked on the road when it reached near Sarwar Shaheed Chowk, killing seven people and injuring 16 others.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The residents of the area rescued the injured from the wreckage of the van and shifted them to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.<br />&nbsp;</p>


US wishes Zardari well, dismisses coup rumour

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The United States Wednesday wished Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari well after aides said he suffered a heart attack and dismissed rumours that the civilian leader was being pushed out.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We have seen the reports. We certainly wish him a speedy recovery,&quot; said White House spokesman Jay Carney.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Zardari&nbsp;s illness sparked media reports that he is contemplating resignation, but loyalists ruled out the idea he may step down.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>State Department spokesman Mark Toner, asked if the United States was worried that a quiet coup was underway against the embattled president, said: &quot;No concerns and no reason to believe&quot; the speculation.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Our belief is that it&nbsp;s completely health-related,&quot; Toner told reporters.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Zardari is considered to have a fraught relationship with the military, which historically has been Pakistan&nbsp;s most powerful institution and has repeatedly pushed aside elected leaders.<br /><br />&nbsp;</p>


Lahore: Young girl commits suicide

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to Sanda Police, the 20-year-old Umm-ul-Mubeen, daughter of Qamar of Arain Colony was mentally ill and was under treatment for the past four years.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The disease frustrated her and she committed suicide by strangulating herself. Police have confirmed the suicide in the initial report and handed the dead body to the heirs who took it to their ancestral town, Sialkot, for burial.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Chiniot: Dacoits kill police inspector

The police party came under fire from dacoits when it reached near Jhang By-pass, killing Sheikh Tahir on the spot while the other police official received minor injuries.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On receiving the information, the DCO and DPO Chiniot reached the spot&nbsp; Inspector Sheikh Tahir was resident of Gojra and had three daughters.<br />&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pakistan&nbsp;s hockey team have recorded their biggest Champions Trophy win in 14 years, beating Korea 6-2 in today&nbsp;s first game of day four in the Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament being played in Auckland, New Zealand.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In the secondary pool -- where sides are scrapping for positions five through eight -- a late flurry of goals sealed the win for Pakistan, matching their 1997 Champions Trophy result against the same team.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>With the scores locked at 2-2 through most of the second half, the Koreans crumbled completely late in the match, leaking four goals in the last 10 minutes.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It was also Pakistan&nbsp;s first win of the 2011 tournament.<br />&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to details, Naseer Ahmad son of Nazir Ahmad of Mochiwala Kho near Bhakkar kidnapped his cousin Haleema Bibi a few days ago.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The elders of the family decided to wani Naseer&rsquo;s 11-year-old sister with Haleema&rsquo;s brother Saghir Ahmad. On receiving information, Cantt Police Station Sub-inspector Manzoor Hussain conducted a raid and arrested fathers of the bride and groom and seven others.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Police have registered a case against 21 people in the Cantt Police Station and conducting raids to arrest the culprits.<br />&nbsp;</p>


'Zardari in a stable condition'

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>President Asif Ali Zardari is in a stable condition after undergoing tests for a heart condition in Dubai and he is expected to return to Pakistan once the results of his check-up are available in two to three days, a close aide to the Pakistani leader said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;His condition is stable. He has been kept in the ICU because a lot of visitors were coming to meet him. I advised him, in order to reduce visitors, that he should stay in the ICU so that he can rest,&quot; said Petroleum Minister Asim Hussain, a medical doctor who has served as Zardari s personal physician.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Hussain said he expected Zardari to return to Pakistan by the weekend, in time to address a proposed joint session of both houses of Parliament.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;His activities have been very hectic over the past few days and I think he is stable now. He will be (in the hospital) for two to three more days. Once the results of the tests come in, he will be discharged and he will be back home,&quot; he said.<br />&nbsp;</p>


US urges Pakistan to act after Afghan attacks

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The United States on Wednesday urged greater action by Pakistan against a militant group that Afghanistan blamed for an unprecedented massacre against its Shiite minority.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>State Department spokesman Mark Toner also confirmed that one US citizen was among the dead in Tuesday&nbsp;s twin attacks, which Afghan President Hamid Karzai blamed on the banned Pakistani extremist movement Lashkar-i-Jhangvi.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fifty-five people were killed in Kabul on Tuesday and another four in a similar attack in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Toner said the United States did not know the full details of the attacks but that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had Lashkar-i-Jhangvi in mind when she urged Pakistan to act against extremists during an October visit to Islamabad.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It&nbsp;s precisely the kind of organization that the Secretary was trying to address when she went to Pakistan in calling for Pakistan to do more to combat this kind of extremist terrorist activity within its own borders,&quot; Toner told reporters.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pointing out that Lashkar-i-Jhangvi has been blamed for attacks in Pakistan as well, Toner said: &quot;It&nbsp;s clearly a threat to both countries.&quot;<br />&nbsp;</p>


PPP to invite applications for Senate elections after Zardaris return

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Chairman Pakistan People&rsquo;s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and PPP&rsquo;s vice chairman Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani jointly presided over a meeting of the senior party leadership present in Islamabad at the Prime Minister House on Wednesday evening.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting discussed issues relating to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) air strikes, the forthcoming Senate elections and the steps for the implementation of the pledge made by the party to meet the longstanding demand of the people for Saraiki province.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The meeting decided that the joint session of the parliament would be called as soon as the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security are finalized.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It was also decided that soon after the return of the PPP co-chairman, President Asif Ali Zardari, applications would be invited from the party workers for the Senate elections.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The meeting asked the manifesto committee to expedite finalization of its report on the Saraiki province.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari lauded the courageous stand promptly taken by the government on the NATO air strikes.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He also appreciated the measures taken by the Government and the party to meet the genuine aspirations of the people of Pakistan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The meeting was attended by Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Ms Hina Rabbani Khar, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Syed Khursheed Shah, Dr Babar Awan, Syed Naveed Qamar, Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Ms Sherry Rehman, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Jahangir Badar, Farhatullah Babar, Ms Rukhsana Bangash and Hashaam Sheikh.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Fai pleads guilty of violating US laws

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>A longtime activist for the Kashmir cause and head of Kashmiri American Council Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai pleaded guilty of violating US laws.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ghulam Nabi Fai, 62, of Fairfax, executive director of the Washington-based Kashmiri American Council, pleaded guilty in US District Court to one count of conspiracy and one of impeding the Internal Revenue Service.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fai continued his struggle for the Kashmir cause under extremely difficult circumstances at different forums. He is free on bond pending a sentencing hearing scheduled for March 9. He faces up to eight years in prison.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Meanwhile, an emergent meeting of Kashmiri American Council will be held today to discuss the situation.<br />&nbsp;</p>


US doubts Iran can make use of wrecked drone

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The RQ-170 Sentinel high-altitude stealth drone was on a surveillance mission when it was dot down in eastern Iran.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But even if Iran succeeds in recovering some technology from the wrecked aircraft, Tehran is unlikely to be able to make use of it, said a US official who declined to be named.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;US capabilities are remarkably advanced, and it&nbsp;s unclear that the Iranians have the expertise&quot; to exploit the advanced know-how in the aircraft, the official said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Washington nevertheless is &quot;concerned&quot; about the loss of the top secret drone, a senior military official told reporters.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We&nbsp;re always concerned when there&nbsp;s an aircraft, whether it&nbsp;s manned or unmanned, that we lose -- particularly in a place where we&nbsp;re not able to get to it,&quot; Navy Captain John Kirby said Tuesday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>NATO has denied a claim by Tehran that the drone crashed after it succeeded in shooting it down.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>US officials said that aircraft had been en route to Afghanistan at the time of the crash.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>An identical stealth aircraft to the one lost in Iran reportedly was used by US Navy SEALs in the operation last May that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.<br />&nbsp;</p>


White House rejects Assad's violence denial

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Bashar al-Assad said in an interview earlier that no government in the world would kill its people &quot;unless it&nbsp;s led by a crazy person&quot; and said he did not &quot;own&quot; the security forces carrying out the violence.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The White House said Assad&nbsp;s claims however were &quot;not credible.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;The United States and many other nations around the world who have come together to condemn the atrocious violence in Syria perpetrated by the Assad regime know exactly what is happening and who is responsible,&quot; said White House spokesman Jay Carney.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The United Nations estimates that more than 4,000 people have died in the Syria crackdown on protesters, who have built into the greatest challenge yet to Assad amid a wave of uprisings in the Arab world that have toppled authoritarian leaders in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The United States has opposed sanctions on the Assad government and said that the Syrian president has lost legitimacy and should step down to pave the way for a democratic transition.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Karachi Inter students protest, cite incorrect results

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>They were protesting against alleged mistakes in results of Intermediate First and Second Year examination 2011. <br />The protesting students chanted slogans against the Karachi Board over mistakes and later moved to Sindh Assembly building and staged a protest demonstration for an hour outside the assembly. A traffic mess was witnessed at the KPC road owing to the protest.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>One of the protestors said that that he cleared all his papers and according to the rules minimum passing percentage should be 33% but board gave him 18 percent in total despite clearing all papers.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He further said that he was a student of Government City College but in the list he was shown a student of another college. The protesting student demanded the board get all papers rechecked by competent teachers.<br />&nbsp;</p>
