| No threat to Pakistan, its defence in strong hands: PM Posted: <p> </p><p>Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday said there is no threat to Pakistan as it is strong, stable and powerful country and its defence is in strong hands.</p><p> </p><p>Talking to newsmen at the Prime Minister House, he said, “There is no threat to Pakistan, no danger to Pakistan as it is a stable and strong country.”</p><p> </p><p>The Prime Minister said Pakistan is a responsible state and an important member of the international community. Replying to a question on Balochistan issue, the Prime Minister said a committee has been constituted to contact political leadership of the country to convene All Parties Conference on the issue.<br /> </p> |
| 94 people killed in Syria ciolence: monitoring group Posted: <p> </p><p>The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the deaths included 24 civilians who died in the besieged city of Homs while eight others were killed in the area around the town.</p><p> </p><p>Twenty-three members of the regime s forces were killed across the country in clashes with army deserters siding with the rebels.</p><p> </p><p>Seven others were killed in the region around Alep, eight in Hama region, 10 in Idlib region and 11 in Deraa region. Three army deserters were believed to have died in Alep and Deraa.<br /> </p> |

| Status of industry for cable operators soon: Firdous Posted: <p> </p><p>The chairman of Cable Operators Association of Pakistan, Khalid Arain, called on Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan in Sialkot. The minister said during the meeting that status of industry will be given to cable operators very soon.</p><p> </p><p>Minister for Information and Broadcasting also assured to solve the issues faced by the cable operators. Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan also advised the cable operators to take careful approach toward Indian channels.</p><p> </p><p>The chairman of Cable Operators Association of Pakistan, Khalid Arain, assured the Minister for Information and Broadcasting of full cooperation of his association and said that cable operators will continue their role to provide clean and healthy entertainment to the viewers in Pakistan.<br /> </p> |

They started their political journey with success in the by-polls.</p><p> </p><p>Musa Gilani, who was unofficially declared winner from NA 148 constituency, is son of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. He was born in 1981.</p><p> </p><p>Successful PPP candidate from NA 168 constituency in Vehari, Nitasha Daultana is daughter of Zahid Daultana, niece of Tehmina Daultana and sister of Azeem Daultana. She was born in 1983.</p><p> </p><p>Mustafa Mahmood of Functional League was unofficially declared winner from NA 195 constituency in Rahim Yar Khan. His father Syed Ahmad Mahmood and grandfather Syed Hasan Mahmood also remained ministers in the past. | US condemns killing of American officers in Kabul Posted: <p> </p><p>Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is condemning what he calls the murder of two American military officers in Afghanistan s capital.</p><p> </p><p>Pentagon press secretary George Little says in a written statement that Panetta believes Saturday s killings in Kabul are unacceptable.</p><p> </p><p>The nationality of the gunman hasn t been confirmed. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack inside a heavily guarded government building, saying it was retaliation for the burning of Qurans on a U.S. military base in Afghanistan.</p><p> </p><p>Little says Panetta received a telephone call from his Afghan counterpart, who offered his condolences and apologized for the incident.</p><p> </p><p>Little says Panetta urged the Afghan government to take "decisive action" to protect coalition forces and to curtail violence after a week of unrest sparked by outrage over the burning of the Muslim holy books.<br /> </p> |
| NATO recalls all staff from Afghan ministries Posted: <p> </p><p>NATO on Saturday pulled all its staff out of Afghan government ministries after two of its advisors were shot dead within the interior ministry, as anti-US protests raged for a fifth day.</p><p> </p><p>Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying it was in revenge for the burning of Korans at a US-run military base -- an incident that forced US President Barrack Obama to apologise to the Afghan people.</p><p> </p><p>In a day of violence across the country, a UN compound came under attack by thousands of demonstrators in northeastern Kunduz province, but they were driven back when police fired into the crowd, an AFP correspondent at the scene said.</p><p> </p><p>Five people were reported killed in the attack, taking the five day death toll from protests over the burning of Korans at the US-run Bagram airbase to around 30.</p><p> </p><p>President Hamid Karzai issued a statement urging demonstrators and Afghan security forces to exercise restraint, saying the government was pressing the US "on the need to bring to justice the perpetrators of the crime".</p><p> </p><p>NATO said that in the Kabul shooting "an individual" turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force officers in the interior ministry, killing two, without giving further details.</p><p> </p><p>A government source told AFP the two men were American advisors and that they were shot within the interior ministry, which has responsibilities for counter-terrorism operations, by a member of the Afghan police.</p><p> </p><p>"For obvious force protection reasons, I have ... taken immediate measures to recall all other ISAF personnel working in ministries in and around Kabul," said General John Allen, commander of NATO s International Security Assistance Force.</p><p> </p><p>The US, which leads a 130,000-strong military force fighting an insurgency in Afghanistan, has advisors throughout the Afghan government.</p><p> </p><p>Britain said its embassy was also temporarily withdrawing all civilian mentors and advisors from Afghan government institutions in Kabul.</p><p> </p><p>The latest deaths come hard on the heels of the killing of two American troops on Thursday when an Afghan soldier turned his weapon on them at their base in eastern Nangarhar province as demonstrators approached.</p><p> </p><p>The Koran burning has inflamed anti-Western sentiment already smouldering in Afghanistan over abuses by US-led foreign troops, such as the release last month of a video showing US Marines urinating on the corpses of dead Afghans.<br /> </p> |
| Gunman kills 2 US advisers in Afghan ministry Posted: <p> </p><p>A gunman killed two American military advisers inside a heavily guarded government building in the heart of Kabul Saturday as protests over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a U.S. base raged across the country for a fifth day.</p><p> </p><p>The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, and the NATO commander recalled all international military personnel working in Afghan ministries in the capital.</p><p> </p><p>The two advisers were shot in the back of the head, according to two Western officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information.</p><p> </p><p>U.S. officials said the assailant remained at large and a manhunt was under way.</p><p> </p><p>An apology from President Barack Obama has failed to quell public outrage over what NATO insisted was an accidental desecration of the Quran. At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.</p><p> </p><p>Among those dead were two U.S. soldiers who were killed Thursday by one of their Afghan counterparts while a riot raged outside their base in the eastern province of Nangarhar.</p><p> </p><p>Gen. John Allen, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said he recalled all NATO personnel from the ministries "for obvious force protection reasons" but the alliance remains committed to its partnership with the Afghan government.</p><p> </p><p>He said NATO is investigating Saturday s shooting and will pursue all leads to find the person responsible for the attack.</p><p> </p><p>"The perpetrator of this attack is a coward whose actions will not go unanswered," Allen said.</p><p> </p><p>NATO forces have advisers embedded in many Afghan ministries, both as trainers and to help manage the transition to Afghan control and foreign forces prepare to withdraw by the end of 2014. The Afghan Interior Ministry oversees all of the country s police, so has numerous NATO advisers.<br /> </p> |
| Dozen killed in Nigeria jail attack Posted: <p> </p><p>Gunmen suspected of being Boko Haram Islamists killed a dozen people when they razed a police station after failing to storm a jail in northeastern Nigeria s Gombe city, police said Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>The city was put under lockdown, with no residents allowed to leave their homes, after the gun and bomb attacks in a botched attempt to free inmates.</p><p> </p><p>"The gunmen had attempted to break into the prison near the police station and their attempt was unsuccessful, but they succeeded in burning down the police station," police chief for Gombe state Gandhi Ebikeme Orubebe told AFP.</p><p> </p><p>"So far 12 people have been killed in the bomb and shooting attack, 10 of them were civilians and two policemen," he said, adding that the police station had been blown up with bombs.</p><p> </p><p>Witnesses had earlier told AFP they counted 14 bodies.</p><p> </p><p>No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamist sect Boko Haram last week said it was behind a prison raid in central Kogi state, near the capital Abuja, which freed 119 inmates.</p><p> </p><p>Boko Haram, blamed for a wave of recent raids in northern and central Nigeria, has repeatedly claimed its members are being illegally held in state prisons and demanded their release.</p><p> </p><p>Many of Boko Haram s recent attacks have targeted the police, but suspected members of the sect also gunned down five worshippers inside a mosque on Friday as evening prayers ended in Kano, Nigeria s second largest city.<br /> </p> |
| Radwanska wins Dubai title by defeating Goerges Posted: <p> </p><p>Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland won her eighth career WTA title when she defeated Julia Goerges of Germany 7-5, 6-4 in the Dubai Tennis Championships final on Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>Radwanska will rise one place to a career-best No. 5 when the world rankings are updated on Monday.</p><p> </p><p>The fifth-seeded Radwanska led in both sets but it took her almost two hours to overcome the unseeded Goerges, who ousted defending champion Caroline Wozniacki the day before.</p><p> </p><p>The German rallied on her powerful forehand, but Radwanska patiently remained on the baseline to watch Goerges unsuccessful forays to the net, rushed shots and long and wide returns.</p><p> </p><p>Radwanska was set to rush to victory in the second set by pulling ahead 4-1, but the Pole faltered and let the German win three more games before wrapping up her second win over Goerges in a month.</p><p> </p><p>Radwanska improved her record to 15-3 on the year, all three losses to only top-ranked Victoria Azarenka. | Del Potro beats Tsonga in Open 13 semifinal Posted: <p> </p><p>Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina beat top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-3 in an Open 13 semifinal on Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>Del Potro will next face 2010 champion Michael Llodra of France who upset third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-4, 7-6 (10).</p><p> </p><p>Tsonga outslugged Del Potro with 26 aces to 15 but made too many unforced errors against the 2009 U.S. Open champion, who has reached his second final in two weeks.</p><p> </p><p>Del Potro broke for a 2-0 lead in the final set when Tsonga netted a backhand volley. He clinched victory on a backhand from Tsonga that sailed wide.</p><p> </p><p>"He was very solid and consistent behind the baseline," Tsonga said. "I couldn t find the solution. I fought until the end but that was not enough."</p><p> </p><p>Both players struggled to hit their stride.</p><p> </p><p>Tsonga made a double-fault and three unforced errors to drop the opening game. He broke back in the fourth game but then made a forehand error to give Del Potro a 3-2 lead.</p><p> </p><p>Del Potro slammed an ace to save a break point at 3-2 and whipped a forehand winner to erase another one at 4-3 before taking the first set with a service winner clocked at 208 kph (129 mph).</p><p> </p><p>Tsonga, who won this tournament in 2009, raised his game in the second set by hitting 26 winners to 16 for Del Potro.</p><p> </p><p>Del Potro saved a set point at 5-4 to force a tiebreaker. I m not really calm," Del Potro said. | Melzer advances to ATP Memphis final Posted: <p> </p><p>Austria s Jurgen Melzer advanced to the final of the $1.37 million ATP and WTA Memphis Open on Saturday with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Czech third seed Radek Stepanek.</p><p> </p><p>Melzer, who upset US top seed John Isner in the quarter-finals, will play for the $277,915 top prize against the winner of a later semi-final between Canadian fourth seed Milos Raonic and 284th-ranked Benjamin Becker of Germany.</p><p> </p><p>Melzer, 30, seeks his fourth career ATP crown after titles at Vienna in 2009 and 2010 and Bucharest clay in 2006.
