ISLAMABAD, March 29: The Supreme Court turned down on Thursday a request by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) for withdrawal of a case against the import of a proscribed chemical -- a scandal that allegedly involves the prime minister's younger son, Ali Musa Gilani.

Pakistan eyes Russia for Iran gas project

Ogra wants POL prices unchanged for a month

ISLAMABAD, March 29: Estimating an 8.2 per cent increase under the price formula, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has advised the government to keep prices of petroleum products unchanged for next month to comply with a decision of the special parliamentary committee, which warned of unrest if prices are raised.

Sources told Dawn that in its monthly advice for adjustments in prices of petroleum products, the oil and gas regulator had also advocated a change in the existing pricing mechanism from monthly to quarterly basis to provide relief to the public at large. And in view of increasing price trend in the international market, the government should also arrange import of petrol through long-term contracts to secure some savings, it said...

Britain's online visa service for Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD, March 29: British High Commissioner Adam Thomson has said that an online visa service is being introduced in Pakistan and the UK Border Agency will not accept applications on paper forms from May 1.

Briefing journalists on changes in visa rules here on Thursday, Mr Thomson said those applying for work or study visa would be required to submit points-based applications online from April 6. The system will reduce waiting time at the application centre...

Railways GM held on charges of misappropriation

ISLAMABAD, March 29: Railways General Manager Saeed Akhtar was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday on charges of misappropriation.

A spokesman for the bureau which has set up a special cell to investigate several corruption cases concerning the railways confirmed the arrest. According to sources, Mr Akhtar was arrested when he left his office in Pak Secretariat. They said some leaders of parties in the ruling coalition and senior military officers were also involved in the cases...

'Vaccination campaign' doctor sacked for anti-state activities

PESHAWAR, March 29: The health department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has terminated the service of former Khyber Agency surgeon Dr Shakil Afridi for his involvement in organising an unauthorised US-sponsored vaccination campaign in Abbottabad to collect DNA samples of people living in the compound where Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden lived with his family.

Dr Afridi was arrested by security agencies in July, about two months after Bin Laden was killed by US commandos...

ADEN, March 29: A bid to release a Swiss woman kidnapped in Yemen has suffered a blow after her abductors made excessive demands, including for Osama bin Laden's widows to be freed, a tribal chief said on Thursday.

Haqqani will have to come for testimony, says SC

ISLAMABAD, March 29: Former ambassador Husain Haqqani will have to come to Pakistan to testify before the judicial commission investigating authenticity of a controversial memo as the Supreme Court held on Thursday that its earlier order of obligating him to return home whenever called would remain in the field.

A ten-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, assembled to take up a request by the commission's secretary, granted another six weeks to the commission to complete its job of finding the truth behind the controversy...
