| Jim Yong Kim nominated for WB president Posted:

Citing Kim’s record working on international health in the Rose Garden Friday, Obama said, “It’s time for a development professional to lead the world’s largest development agency.”

Kim, a trained medical doctor who has led the Ivy League college since 2009, will replace Robert Zoellick, whose term ends June 30.

“Despite its name, the World Bank is more than just a bank—it’s one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce poverty and raise standards of living in some of the poorest countries in the planet,” Obama said. “Jim has truly global experience. He’s worked from Asia to Africa to the Americas, from capitals to small villages.”

Though the board of the World Bank will officially decide on the next president over the next three weeks, the president’s nomination effectively guarantees Kim the post as the new head of the prestigious 187-nation lending organization focused on economic development.

Kim was not one of the names that had been often discussed publicly for the post. Names floated included Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice and economist Larry Summers, who was treasury secretary under Bill Clinton and later director of Obama’s National Economic Council.

Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs had actively campaigned for the position, racking up endorsements from 27 Democratic congressmen and government officials and government leaders in countries like Kenya, Chile and Bhutan.

“Dr Jim Kim is a superb nominee for the World Bank presidency,” Sachs said in a statement. “I support his nomination 100 percent. I congratulate the administration for nominating a world-class development leader for this position.”

Kim, 52, has been involved in development work as the former executive director of the nonprofit Partners In Health, which provides medical services in countries including Haiti, Peru, Russia and Rwanda. He also led the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS department from 2004 to 2006, in addition to formerly being a professor at Harvard Medical School and winning a MacArthur Foundation genius grant in 2003.

Kim’s three years at Dartmouth has been marked by some controversy, most recently over reports that fraternities have been savagely hazing their pledges. The Boston Globe noted earlier this month that “faculty are in revolt, students are pressing for change” and many on the New Hampshire campus “accuse Kim of abdicating leadership on the issue.”

|

| China and Australia in USD 31bn currency swap Posted:

It is a step towards boosting the renminbi s profile in developed markets.

Beijing has established nearly 20 bilateral swap lines over the past four years, but Australia ranks as the biggest economy yet to sign such a deal, which analysts said could give a shot in the arm to Beijing s goal of internationalising its currency.

While central banks normally use swaps to provide liquidity to each other in the event of a financial crisis, China has been using them to lay the groundwork for the renminbi s slow march into global markets.

In announcing the Rmb200bn/A$30bn (USD 31bn) deal, the Reserve Bank of Australia said: "The main purposes of the swap agreement are to support trade and investment between Australia and China, particularly in local-currency terms, and to strengthen bilateral financial co-operation."

It added that there were "increasing opportunities available to settle trade between the two countries in Chinese renminbi and to make renminbi-denominated investments".

China now has more than Rmb1.5tn in swap lines with other central banks, but they have largely been symbolic. Only Hong

Kong, the hub of offshore renminbi trading, has had to activate its swap with China, doing so briefly in 2010 when it faced a renminbi squeeze.

Nevertheless, the symbolic steps are beginning to add up to something bigger, according to Shen Jianguang, an economist with Mizuho Securities in Hong Kong.

"It s quite significant. They haven t had agreements with such advanced economies. This will gain momentum," he said.

There has been talk in the market that the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan could soon be in line for currency swaps with China.

Building up a global pool of renminbi is proving a challenge for China. The currency is only permitted to flow out of the country through tightly controlled channels, mainly trade.

The settlement of trade deals in renminbi grew swiftly from a low base over the past two years, but it has appeared to run out of steam in recent months and offshore renminbi deposits have declined.

Some economists say that until China takes bolder steps to open its capital account, allowing freer currency flows across its borders, the project of renminbi internationalisation will not fulfil its promise.

China s deal with Australia also underscores the close economic ties between the two countries.

China is Australia s biggest trading partner and the main market for it exports of iron, coal and gas. Figures released by the government on Wednesday showed China had consumed a little more than quarter of Australia s total resource and energy exports in the 2011 financial year.

Andrew Skinner, head of global trade and receivables finance at HSBC Australia, said the agreement was a "sensible and logical" progression of Australia s relationship with China.

"It s a big step forward in formalising the internationalisation of the renminbi," he said. "It will help a lot of people get more comfortable using the currency knowing that these sorts of arrangements are in place."

|

| 'Iranians, we love you': Israeli Facebook page Posted:

A new Facebook initiative has been launched by Israelis to reach out to Iranians to show them that despite tensions, the majority of Israelis do not want war.

The "Iranians, we love you" Facebook page has garnered around 18,000 "likes" after less than a week since Roni Edris and Michal Tamir, a couple from Tel Aviv, launched the group on the popular social media website.

"It just started as a post on Facebook on my private page and it was a picture of me and my daughter, with a poster I designed that read Iranians we love you, we ll never bomb your country ," Edris, a father of two, told Xinhua.

"I never imagined it would grow such much and get so much attention. I m a graphic designer, so it just popped on my head and I posted it, and asked my friends about it," he said.

When he first posted the picture on his personal Facebook page, many of his friends reprimanded him.

"In the beginning, my friends were saying how can you say you love Iranians, you don t even know them. They said war is coming, and telling the other part I love you is a weakness sign, but I think we have to stop this war madness somehow," Edris said.

He considers himself a common Israeli citizen, who is interested in peace and who does not share his government s take on Iran.

"Why this war with Iran? I wanted to tell these people I don t know them, but that we re brothers and we don t have to share this madness."

Edris, who owns a small graphic design school in Tel Aviv, now works almost entirely on his peace enterprise along with his wife.

The success of his idea has taken him completely by surprise, especially since he began receiving hundreds of letters from Iranians, living in Iran and abroad.

He now gets dozens of messages from Iranians sharing their love for Israelis.

One message from Darius from Iran read: "There is no reason for not being united, we love you Israeli people."

Another message from someone claiming to be an Iranian from Germany called blamed both the governments, saying: "Our problem is that we are all victims of corrupted politicians in our countries."

Edris, however, does not know what the next step will be.

"Now we re trying to focus on this and since we have the media s attention, our message has reached out to a lot of people. A nuclear war is not going to happen one day to the other, and maybe if the message is big, the guy who s pushing the button will listen to us," he said.

|
| Nicolas Sarkozy: Jail those who browse terror websites Posted:

The proposed rules, unveiled by Nicolas Sarkozy after the death of an Islamist fanatic wanted for a horrifying series of execution-style murders, have alarmed journalists and legal experts, who say they risk pulling the plug on free expression.

Sarkozy argued that it was time to treat those who browse extremist websites the same way as those who consume child pornography.

"Anyone who regularly consults internet sites which promote terror or hatred or violence will be sentenced to prison," he told a campaign rally in Strasbourg, in eastern France. "What is possible for pedophiles should be possible for trainee terrorists and their supporters, too."

How the proposed rules would work isn t clear. When asked, Sarkozy s office directed the query for details to the Ministry of Justice, which didn t immediately offer clarification.

"Trying to criminalize a visit -- a simple visit -- to a website, that s something that seems disproportionate," said Lucie Morillon, who runs the new media bureau of journalists watchdog group Reporters Without Borders.

"What s especially worrying for us is how you are going to know who s looking at what site. Does this announcement mean the installation of a global Internet surveillance system in France?"

Media lawyer Christophe Bigot seconded her concerns, saying that any such law - if passed - would be a serious blow to the democratic credentials of a country that considers itself the home of human rights.

"I don t see how you can assume that a person who connects (to an extremist website) not only shares the ideas that are being expressed there but is ready to act on them," Bigot said. "That seems to be a very dangerous shortcut - a real step back in terms of individual liberty."

Bigot said it wasn t clear to him to what degree Sarkozy s proposals were serious. The president is only a month from a close election and has France s far-right nipping at his heels, so he s been under pressure to appear tough.

The tightening presidential race has been upended by the shooting rampage blamed on Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who allegedly killed three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi before dying in a violent confrontation with police in the southern French city of Toulouse earlier Thursday.

Merah reportedly told police that the campaign of terror was an attempt to "bring France to its knees," and a poll released Thursday by the CSA firm suggested that Sarkozy may benefit politically from a hardening of attitudes toward extremism.

Morillon said she understood the emotional appeal of a crackdown on online radicalization in the wake of such atrocities.

Still, she said, "you have to be careful not to attack the wrong target."

"Once more it s the internet that s being blamed, as if the internet was the source of all evil."

|
