| Multan: Urs of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam starts today Posted: <p> </p><p>The custodian (Sajjada Nasheen) of the shrine Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi would inaugurate the three-day Urs proceedings by giving bath to the grave of the saint.</p><p> </p><p>Later, a conference will be held at the shrine during with renowned scholars and clerics would spotlight the life of the saint.</p><p> </p><p>A large number of faithful are expected to come to Multan from across the country to attend the Urs.</p><p> </p><p>The DCO has issued orders for establishment of a central control room, asking all departments to stay in touch with the control room till the end of the Urs.</p><p> </p><p>Tight security arrangements have been made for the occasion. All the road to and from will remain closed for all kind of traffic during the Urs.<br /> </p> |
| 70 killed in Libya tribal clashes Posted: <p> </p><p>Three days of clashes between tribes in the southern Libyan town of Sabha have killed more than 70 people, Libyan government spokesman Nasser al-Manaa said on Wednesday.</p><p> </p><p>"It is regrettable that more than 70 people have been killed and more than 150 have been wounded" since Monday the desert town of Sebha, the spokesman told a news conference in Tripoli.</p><p> </p><p>Local officials said the fighting pitting the Toubou tribe against Arab tribes in Sebha had eased and efforts to secure a truce were underway Wednesday, although the Toubou claimed they were facing a "massacre."</p><p> </p><p>"There are still clashes but not as intense," in Sebha, southern Libya, said Abdelmajid Seif al-Nasser, a town official who quit his post on Tuesday from the ruling National Transitional Council in protest at the violence.</p><p> </p><p>"The national army and a committee of elders have entered the town in a bid to secure a truce," Nasser, who represented the NTC in Sebha, told AFP earlier on Wednesday.</p><p> </p><p>But Toubou tribesmen said rival Arab tribesmen from Sabha were "surrounding" them in the Tayuri and Al-Hijara neighbourhoods and shelling them since the early hours of the morning.<br /> </p> |
| Will respect Pak parliamentary decision: US Posted: <p> </p><p>Giving a media briefing in Washington, the State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said that we would wait for the Pakistani Parliament to complete its ongoing review of its bilateral ties with US.</p><p> </p><p>"Our contacts have continued all the way through... but in terms of where we go from here, we re going to wait until the Pakistani side finishes its internal debate and then we will look forward to consulting with them on the results," Victoria Nuland said.</p><p> </p><p>On the other hand, Senator John Kerry in a statement before Foreign Relations Committee said that preventing Iran to acquire nuclear weapons is America s gravest foreign policy challenge and requires persistent, hard-nosed diplomacy.</p><p> </p><p>"To have any prospect of success, we need an approach that gives diplomatic engagement space to breathe, without allowing Iran to play for time and drag us into a drawn-out process," he said.</p><p> </p><p>"It won t be easy to find a solution that might be acceptable to both sides, but also give the international community confidence that Iran neither has the capacity nor the desire to make a mad dash to nuclear weapons," he said.<br /> </p> |
| Multan: Road accident claims two lives Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, two persons were killed when an over-speeding truck hit a motorcycle on Sooraj Kund Road in Multan. The truck driver managed to escape from the scene after the accident.</p><p> </p><p>The angry residents carrying the dead bodies staged a protest and blocked the road, resulting in long queues of vehicles on the road. The protesters resorted to stone pelting when police tried to reopen the road for traffic and broke wind screens of many vehicles.</p><p> </p><p>Later, a heavy contingent of police reached the sight and shifted the dead bodies to the Nishtar Hospital for autopsy.<br /> </p> |
| Larkana: Jirga declares couple karo kari Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, Amna Hangori and Abdul Ghaffar Shar, residents of Thari Mirwah near Larkana, got married in a court in Khairpur a month ago.</p><p> </p><p>A jirga, headed by local landlords Khadam Hussain and Waryam Khaskhaili, declared the couple karo kari and issued instruction of killing them.</p><p> </p><p>The couple moved to Larkana to save their lives. Talking to Dunya News, Abdul Ghafar and Amna said that their life is in danger while police too is not providing them protection.<br /> </p> |
| Lahore: Two police officials riding stolen motorcycle nabbed Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, two police officials of Lyton Road Police Station, Waqas and Khalid, were on patrol near Chowk Baba Azan in Ichra on a motorcycle. A youth, named Aziz, recognized his motorcycle which was used by the police officials.</p><p> </p><p>Aziz raised alarm on seeing his motorcycle upon which the residents of the area gathered and nabbed both the police officials who were handed over to Ichra police. It is pertinent to mention here that Aziz’s motorcycle was snatched five months ago on gun point. <br /> </p> |

| SC to hear Haqqanis petition to testify via video Posted: <p> </p><p>The Supreme Court (SC) will hear Husain Haqqani’s petition today to testify via video link in memo case before judicial commission.</p><p> </p><p>A ten-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, will take up Haqqani s petition, which asks that he should be allowed to record his statement with the commission via a video link.</p><p> </p><p>Haqqani contended in his petition that he could not return to Pakistan as he had grave security concerns. He said his family feared for his life in case he travelled to Pakistan.<br /> </p> |

| Joint sitting on Pak-US review reels on Karachi violence Posted: <p> </p><p>The sitting was convened to deliberate on recommendations prepared by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) for review of Pak-US ties.</p><p> </p><p>Awami National Party (ANP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lamented over the killings their activists while the government held activation of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) behind conditions in Karachi and tended to disclose facts in in-camera briefing.</p><p> </p><p>The joint parliamentary sitting, on third consecutive day of its proceedings could not turn up agenda for which both the Houses of the Parliament had been summoned to meet jointly due to reservations expressed by opposition parties, however, government remained victorious in convincing MQM to call off boycott of the House and brought it back to participate in the proceedings.</p><p> </p><p>None from opposition benches expressed any interest to give vent to their sentiments on PCNS recommendations, the lone agenda item of the joint session, however, while speaking on point of order PML-N member of the upper house Mushahidullah Khan alleged MQM activist for shooting his (PML-N) party worker in Karachi.</p><p> </p><p>The PML-N MNA, Khawaja Saad Rafique demanded deweaponization of Karachi, saying that conditions in Karachi could not be normalized merely by dint of arresting people. He also expressed sorrow over the killing of MQM activist.</p><p> </p><p>Responding to PML-N lawmakers’ observations, MQM deputy parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Haider Abbas Rizvi observed that immediate action should be taken any of MQM activists if found involved in the killing of PML-N worker in Karachi. He also said that his party fully condemned the murder of PML-N activist.</p><p> </p><p>The ANP Senators, Afrasiab Khattak and Haji Muhammad Adeel expressed grave concerns over deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi saying the economic hub of Pakistan was being turned into battlefield.</p><p> </p><p>They also were of the viewpoint that Karachi belonged to all the communities so all the stakeholders should acknowledge mandate of each other. Both were vocal in their stance that burning situation in Karachi could not be improved merely through verbal claims so all concerned forcers should look forward for a political solution of the situation.</p><p> </p><p>On the other side, the government held activation of TTP behind the Karachi mayhem as the Interior Minister Rehman Malik offered the House to disclose the facts in this regard in an in-camera briefing. He added that Rangers arrested 37 people over their involvement in violence including two MQM activists.</p><p> </p><p>He said that illegal weapon in bulk quantities was being smuggled in the country from neighbouring countries so country wide operation against illegal weapons and arms should be carried to deweaponize the homeland. He said that Maulana Ahmad Ludhyanvi was arrested for violating law but he was released by court.</p><p> </p><p>He informed the House that threats posed to parliamentarians were being traced out as an inquiry committee headed by DIG Police was investigating the matter and he would present inquiry report before the House as soon as he would get it. Malik also urged PML-N to join committee constituted over the situation in Karachi to bring peace and tranquility there.<br /> </p> |

| Yemen calls on Pakistan to free Bin Laden's widow Posted: <p> </p><p>Hooria Mashour demanded immediate release of Osama bin Laden’s widow and children, as she stressed that punishing the late terrorist’s family members was not only illegal but a breach of their inalienable rights.</p><p> </p><p>“Having been married to a criminal does not equate to the guilt of his or her spouse. Amal al-Sadeh committed no crimes, nor did her children. Pakistan should arrange for their return to Yemen where they belong,” said the Minister to Bikyamasr.com.<br />Amal al-Sadeh, a young woman of Yemeni descent was married off Osama bin Laden over a decade ago and had 4 children with him, the youngest being 2 years-old.</p><p> </p><p>According to the Foreign Ministry, Pakistan is now opposing Amal and her children’s return to Yemen, arguing that she had entered Pakistan illegally and should therefore stand trial.</p><p> </p><p>Her cousin, Hameed al-Sadeh, however denied the allegations saying that the young woman had entered Pakistan perfectly legally with her brother back in 2000, advancing that the Pakistani authorities had actually released a photocopy of her passport bearing an official entry visa stamp.</p><p> </p><p>Amal’s family members are now concerned over her well-being and that of her children, saying that they were all being kept underground and prevented from ever going outside.</p><p> </p><p>Moreover, Amal is said to be suffering ill health following an injury she received in the raid conducted against her husband. Hameed told reporters that “she limps from a bullet wound in her knee and she’s suffering from psychological trauma and very low blood pressure.<br /> </p> |

| Dalai Lama behind self-immolation protests: China Posted: <p> </p><p>This has been alleged by China days before China s president visits to India, repeating past assertions blaming the spiritual leader for dozens of such protests.</p><p> </p><p>Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the Dalai Lama and his associates have been instigating Tibetan independence and creating "disturbances" and that showed the Dalai Lama and his associates "single-handedly" planned the man s self-immolation.</p><p> </p><p>"These acts aimed at achieving Tibetan independence and separatism through taking people s lives will never possibly be successful and will be severely condemned by the international community," Hong told reporters at a regular news briefing.</p><p> </p><p>About 30 such protests have occurred over the past year in ethnic Tibetan areas of China, and a Tibetan self-immolated last year in India, where many exiles reside.</p><p> </p><p>The Tibetan self-declared government-in-exile has rejected the Chinese government s accusations and issued statements discouraging self-immolation.</p><p> </p><p>"In the long-term interest of the Tibetan cause, we urge Tibetans to focus on secular and monastic education to provide the necessary human resources and the capability to strengthen and sustain our movement," the group said in a statement Tuesday. "We once again remind Tibetans to refrain from drastic actions."</p><p> </p><p>Tibetans inside China and exiles say China s crackdown on Tibetan regions is so oppressive, those who choose such a horrific form of protest feel they have no other way to express their beliefs.</p><p> </p><p>Jamphel Yeshi, 27, lit himself on fire during a demonstration against Chinese rule over Tibet and against Chinese President Hu Jintao s visit to India this week.</p><p> </p><p>Photos and video of Yeshi in flames were widely circulated across the globe in contrast to previous self-immolations that have happened in Tibetan areas in China that are subject to an intense security crackdown and largely inaccessible to the media.</p><p> </p> |
