Role of IAEA stressed

SEOUL, March 27: The Nuclear Security Summit concluded on Tuesday by underscoring the centrality of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the global nuclear security structure and issuing voluntary guidelines for participating states to maintain effective security of radioactive material.

"We reaffirm the essential responsibility and central role of the IAEA in strengthening the international nuclear security framework and recognise the value of the IAEA Nuclear Security Plan 2010-13," a joint communique issued at the end of the two-day summit said, in addition to pointing out that nuclear terrorism continued to be a major threat to world security...

10 dead, over 40 vehicles torched: Killing and arson come back to
torment Karachi

KARACHI, March 27: The city descended into violence on Tuesday as gunmen and arsonists went on the rampage, killing at least 10 people and setting on fire over 40 vehicles. The violence erupted after the killing of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement's worker and his brother early in the morning.

As the wave of killings and arson attacks continued, police and Rangers remained on the sidelines doing nothing to restore order...

Pakistan wants result-oriented talks: Khar

NEW DELHI, March 27: The widely anticipated but eventually unscripted and informal meeting between the Indian and Pakistani prime ministers in Seoul has nudged the dialogue process between their officials to be a result-oriented exercise, scant insights into the brief meeting on the margins of an international nuclear summit there indicated on Tuesday.

The Hindu newspaper said the "unscheduled and unscripted" meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani seemed to have been a positive event...

Muttahida may continue boycott of joint session

ISLAMABAD, March 27: Muttahida Qaumi Movement legislators may continue their boycott of the joint sitting of parliament on Wednesday in protest against the killing of an activist of the party and his brother and failure of police to arrest the killers.

"Although we announced boycott of Tuesday's joint sitting only, we can extend it if the government fails to take practical steps to arrest the killers," said Haider Abbas Rizvi, MQM's deputy parliamentary leader in the National Assembly. IPPs serve notices for Rs42bn

ISLAMABAD, March 27: Eleven independent power producers (IPPs) with a total generation capacity of about 2,500MW have served notices about invoking the government's sovereign guarantees over non-payment of Rs42 billion arrears.

A power ministry official confirmed that nine IPPs established under the 2002 power policy and two under the 1994 policy had served notices on the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which is responsible for procuring electricity from the IPPs, public sector thermal power plants and Wapda to invoke the sovereign guarantees...

Investment accord initialled before parliament review

ISLAMABAD, March 27: While legislators are engaged in a crucial debate for devising fresh terms of engagement with the United States in the joint session of parliament, the government gave approval to a controversial Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) with Washington a couple of weeks ago.

Steps ordered against anti-women jirgas

Kidnappers extend ransom deadline

QUETTA, March 27: The kidnappers holding five officials of the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP) have extended their deadline for ransom till April 10. The earlier deadline was March 25.

Al Qaeda suspect met 9/11 figure in Pakistan

Two US congressmen vow to back Balochistan insurgents
