Australia coasts to victory in first T20

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Both Veterans Shane Watson and Michael Hussey hit half centuries with the former - who stood in as skipper for injured captain Michael Clarke during the one day series but stepped down for this format - scoring 69.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Hussey was unbeaten on 59 as the tourists coasted to victory with 11 balls remaining thanks to a fine century partnership by him and Watson after opener David Warner was out for a duck.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>After electing to bat, the West Indies had made 150-7 in the first of the two-match series against Australia at Beausejour Cricket Ground.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The modest total owed much to a swashbuckling 26-ball knock of 54 from Kieron Pollard that featured two fours and five sixes -- four of those coming off consecutive balls in the 16th and 17th overs -- and off 20 balls was the fastest half century by a West Indian batsman in this format.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He beat former West Indies captain Chris Gayle&nbsp;s half century off 23 balls against Australia in 2009.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Daniel Christian was the tourists&nbsp; most effective bowler, taking three wickets for 27 runs.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>West Indies skipper Darren Sammy had hit a blistering 84 in the final match of the one-day series two days ago, but he fell for just seven, misjudging a heave down the ground off Brett Lee that was easily caught by David Hussey.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Australia prevailed by 30 runs in the final one-day international to level the five-match series at 2-2.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Christian came into the Twenty20 team alongside James Pattinson, with George Bailey taking over the captaincy for the shortest format from Watson.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The West Indies were without Andre Russell, who was ruled out after battling a hamstring injury during the one-day series.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It is the first time the West Indies have played a T20 international for five months and for both sides the main concern is to get in some crucial practice ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The second Twenty20 match is in Bridgetown on Friday.<br />&nbsp;</p>


PCB says talks ongoing with other cricket boards

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pakistan Cricket Board chief Zaka Ashraf says he doesn&nbsp;t want to disclose which cricket boards they are and will wait until Bangladesh makes a decision.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Bangladesh&nbsp;s cricket board has submitted a security report on Pakistan to its government after its president Mustafa Kamal led a nine-member delegation to the country earlier this month.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said he is satisfied with the security arrangements, but the board is still waiting for clearance from the government.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>PCB wants to host Bangladesh for either three one-day internationals or two ODIs plus a Twenty20 match. The host cities remain negotiable.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Assad must match words with deeds: Clinton

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad&nbsp;s reported acceptance of a peace plan by envoy Kofi Annan must be matched by &quot;immediate actions.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Clinton&nbsp;s comments came after aides to Annan said the Assad government has accepted a six-point proposal by the UN-Arab League special envoy on halting more than a year of bloodshed in the strife-hit country.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Given Assad&nbsp;s history of overpromising and underdelivering, that commitment (to Annan) must now be matched by immediate actions,&quot; Clinton told reporters.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We will judge Assad&nbsp;s sincerity and seriousness by what he does, not by what he says,&quot; the chief US diplomat added. <br />Assad &quot;can prove it by immediately ordering regime forces to stop firing and begin withdrawing from populated areas,&quot; Clinton said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He can also provide &quot;unfettered access&quot; to international aid workers, release political prisoners, permit &quot;peaceful political activity,&quot; and allow foreign journalists &quot;unobstructed access,&quot; she said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>And Assad can &quot;begin a legitimate political process that leads to a democratic transition,&quot; the chief US diplomat said.<br />Clinton took a tougher line than State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, who called Assad&nbsp;s reported acceptance of the plan &quot;an important step&quot; while cautioning that the proof will come with his actions.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The proposal -- put to Assad by Annan during his visit to Damascus on March 10 and 11 -- was endorsed by the UN Security Council on March 21.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Annan&nbsp;s plan calls for a commitment to stop all armed violence, a daily two-hour humanitarian ceasefire, media access to all areas affected by the fighting, an inclusive Syrian-led political process, a right to demonstrate, and release of arbitrarily detained people.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Israel's security a top priority for Obama: Pentagon

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Pentagon said Tuesday it will request funding to expand Israel&nbsp;s &quot;Iron Dome&quot; short-range air defense system, which helped thwart rocket attacks out of Gaza earlier this month.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The United States spent $204 million on the Iron Dome system in fiscal year 2011 and the Pentagon did not specify what level of funding it would propose to Congress for additional batteries.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;The Department of Defense has been in conversations with the Government of Israel about US support for the acquisition of additional Iron Dome systems and intends to request an appropriate level of funding from Congress to support such acquisitions based on Israeli requirements and production capacity,&quot; press secretary George Little said in a statement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Three batteries of the sophisticated system performed successfully during a rocket barrage by Gaza militants on the weekend of March 10-11, according to Israeli and US officials.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;When nearly 300 rockets and mortars were fired at southern Israel, Iron Dome intercepted over 80 percent of the targets it engaged, saving many civilian lives,&quot; the Pentagon&nbsp;s statement said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The announcement coincides with delicate discussions between Israel and the United States over how to counter Iran&nbsp;s nuclear program, with leaders disagreeing about the imminence of the threat posed by Tehran.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>US officials have warned against a potential Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran and analysts have predicted Tehran would stage retaliation against Israeli and US targets, with pro-Iranian Hezbollah militants possibly launching rocket attacks on Israel.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Some Republicans in Congress have accused President Barack Obama of failing to show sufficient support to Israel but lawmakers immediately praised the move to fund more batteries for the Iron Dome shield.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;I am pleased that the president now acknowledges the need to increase funding to counter a deadly threat, and I look forward to working together to identify the additional resources necessary to help defend our Israeli friends,&quot; Buck McKeon, a Republican and chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said in a statement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The system, the first of its kind in the world, was developed by Israel&nbsp;s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems with the help of US funding. It is designed to intercept rockets and artillery shells fired from a range of four to 70 kilometres (three to 45 miles).</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Each battery comprises detection and tracking radar, state-of-the-art fire control software and three launchers, each with 20 interceptor missiles.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Apples to refund Australian iPad customers

Oil discovered in Kenya for first time

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>President Mwai Kibaki said Monday that oil was discovered in the country&nbsp;s northwest over the weekend.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Kibaki cautioned that commercial viability is still uncertain. He said it was good news for the country but that the discovery was the beginning of a long journey before Kenya could becomes an oil producer.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The discovery was made in Kenya&nbsp;s Turkana region. Neighboring South Sudan and Uganda both have oil industries.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Aid arrives in rebel-held part of Myanmar: UN

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The delivery of food, blankets and basic medical kits to camps housing thousands of displaced civilians who fled fighting in Kachin state marks the second time the U.N. was able to deliver aid there since skirmishes between rebels and the army ignited last June.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>U.N. information officer Aye Win says the aid was delivered Saturday to two camps in the Sadung area. More U.N. convoys are headed to the region.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Aye Win said Monday that the last U.N. aid delivered to Kachin state was Dec. 12.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Last week, Human Rights Watch condemned Myanmar&nbsp;s government for preventing international aid from reaching the strife-torn region.<br />&nbsp;</p>


SC to resume Madhiana case hearing today

Amir Muqam set to join PML-N

PML-Q chief dissolves KP chapter

Karachi in grip of violence: 10 killed, over 50 vehicles torched

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Businesses and educational institutes remained shut after violent incidents swept the city killing at least ten people. More than fifty vehicles were also torched.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The situation instensified after the killing of MQM&rsquo;s sector member in PIB Colony.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fire shots were heard in PIB Colony, Gullistan-e-Johar, Lines Area, Shah Faisal Colon, Korangi and Malir area. The traffic also remained suspended in most areas.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Two vehicles at Isfahani Road, a dairy supplier truck in Malir, a bus in Shah Faisal Colony, another one in North Karachi, two buses in Nagan Chowrangi, 3 buses in PIB Colony and many other vehicles in various areas were torched by angry mob. At many places make shift outlets were also burnt.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The unrest was sparked by the murder of a party worker and his brother late Monday, reviving fears that the city of 18 million could return to horrifying levels of violence that left more than 1,700 people dead last year.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mansoor Mukhtar, 37, a member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the largest political party in the city, was shot dead late Monday when gunmen burst into the home where he was sleeping, police said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>His brother also died and his sister-in-law was wounded in the attack in the central neighbourhood of PIB Colony, police said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Soon afterwards, armed men took to the streets and started setting fire to vehicles, in violence that left a further ten people dead and more injured.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;Our hospitals have received a total of eight bodies of victims from today&rsquo;s firing incidents. They include an MQM member and his brother,&quot; said police surgeon Hamid Parhiar in the southern province Sindh, of which Karachi is the capital.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>At least 50 vehicles, including buses, mini buses and trucks were torched in Karachi, senior official Roshan Sheikh said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The MQM, which represents the Urdu-speaking majority and sits in President Asif Ali Zardari s governing coalition, denied any responsibility.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We have been keeping Karachi peaceful for a long time and such incidents have been perpetrated by those who don&rsquo;t want to see our country stable and peaceful,&quot; party spokesman Wasay Jaleel told AFP.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said 1,715 people were killed in sudden flare-ups of violence in the city last year.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Officials documented more than 100 deaths in one week alone in October in what was Karachi s worst ethnic and political unrest in 16 years.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The violence has been linked to ethnic tensions between the Mohajirs, represented by the MQM, and Pashtun migrants from Pakistan s northwest affiliated to the Awami National Party (ANP).</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wasan ordered police chief to arrest the criminals and present a report immediately. <br />&nbsp;</p>

Withdraw remarks or face lawsuit: Mansoor tells Yasin

He had also alleged that as a result of the same meeting, ceasefire was announced 10 years ago.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said that Hussain Haqqani has pushed Yasin Malik in the Memogate.
