Breather for govt in NRO case

By Nasir Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16: In a significant development the Supreme Court granted to the government on Thursday a much-needed break that may help defuse a perceived standoff between the executive and the judiciary.

A five-judge bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa put off for an indefinite period the hearing of a government petition seeking review of the court’s July 12 order which directed the prime minister to comply with its judgment in the NRO implementation case. But the court made it clear that the postponement should not be considered as a stay...

Judiciary performing functions within constitutional domain: CJ

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has said the judiciary always occupied the highest pedestal among all organs of the state in any democratic set-up. “Judiciary today is the greatest unifying and integrating force of this country and being fully conversant of its basic duty to protect the rights of citizens as well as institutions against constitutional excesses, it is performing functions purely within the constitutional domain,” he said while speaking at a full court reference organised in the Supreme Court on Thursday to bid farewell to Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan on attaining the age of superannuation.
