RIYADH, Aug 26: Saudi authorities announced on Sunday they had foiled a `terror’ plot by elements suspected of links to Al Qaeda, mostly Yemenis, and busted two extremist cells in Riyadh and Jeddah.

20 militants killed in fighting along border

KHAR, Aug 26: At least 20 militants and a soldier were killed on Sunday, the third day of fighting between militants from the Kunar province of Afghanistan and Pakistani security forces in the border area of Batwar in Salarzai tehsil of Bajaur tribal region.Seven militants, four security personnel and two members of Salarzai Qaumi Lashkar were injured.

According to local officials, the militants had entered the mountainous area of Batwar and used heavy weapons to target houses of rival tribal elders and posts of ‘peace committees’ and security forces....

Committee rejects reports about Hindus’ migration

HYDERABAD, Aug 26: A committee formed by President Asif Ali Zardari to look into reports of mass migration of Hindus to India has rejected claims that members of the minority community are leaving Sindh because of security fears.

According to a source, the committee had finalised its proposals and recommended that elements behind forced conversion of Hindu girls should be exposed regardless of their party affiliation. If they happened to be PPP members they should be denied tickets in next elections, the committee suggested...

Badruddin Haqqani dead: Afghan agency

KABUL, Aug 26: Afghanistan’s spy agency said on Sunday that the operational commander of the Haqqani network had been killed in a drone strike in Pakistan.

“We confirm that Badruddin Haqqani, who was the mastermind of almost all sophisticated attacks in Kabul, was killed in a drone strike,” National Directorate of Security spokesman Lutfullah Mashal said. “Our information is based on interception of the conversation of the guys (Haqqani members) on the ground who confirmed he was dead,” he said...

Over 200 Nato bases in Afghanistan closed

KABUL, Aug 26: Nato has closed more than 200 bases in Afghanistan and transferred nearly 300 others to local forces, a concrete step towards its 2014 target of handing over security responsibility, Nato officials said on Sunday.

All 202 closed facilities were small, ranging from isolated checkpoints to bases of a dozen to 300 soldiers, said Lt-Col David Olson, a Nato forces spokesman...
