Cut in supply from Mexico Gulf pushes oil prices up Posted: Crude prices surged in Asia Monday as supply of oil and gas from the Gulf of Mexico was curtailed after Tropical Storm Isaac forced the closure of production facilities in the region, analysts said.New Yorks main contract, light sweet crude for October delivery soared $1.35 to $97.50 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for delivery in October gained $1.40 to $114.99.The shutdown and evacuation of personnel from production facilities in the Gulf due to Tropical Storm Isaac was fuelling a crude rally, said Victor Shum, senior principal of Purvin and Gertz energy consultants in Singapore. In the Gulf of Mexico there is this Tropical Storm Isaac thats threatening the region and has already caused some precautionary shut down of the production facilities there, he told AFP.And so the tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico is the main factor supporting oil at this point, Shum added. The Gulf of Mexico is the hub of US offshore energy production, accounting for 23 percent of US crude oil output and 7.0 percent of US natural gas production. The Gulf coasts facilities also have more than 40 percent of total US petroleum refining capacity and 30 percent of natural gas processing plant capacity.BP said Sunday it was shutting down production at all of its oil and gas platforms in the Gulf and evacuating all staff amid forecasts that Isaac was set to strengthen into a a category two hurricane. The shutdown will include BPs Thunder Horse platform, the worlds largest offshore production and drilling facility which has a capacity of 250,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.Chevron -- the second-largest oil producer in the Gulf behind BP -- also said Sunday it was evacuating staff from some offshore facilities.Royal Dutch Shell said it was preparing for evacuations of non-essential personnel from platforms and had suspended some drilling operations.Meanwhile, three US Gulf Coast states also declared states of emergency on Sunday as Isaac barrelled towards land, threatening to slam into Louisiana as a damaging hurricane. The governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama issued their declarations as Florida, which went on a state of emergency a day earlier, was drenched by heavy rains and strong winds from the storm. |
Ecuador: Assange supporters protest outside UK embassy Posted: Dozens of protesters gathered outside the UK embassy in the Ecuadorean capital of Quito on Sunday to call on British authorities to grant WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange safe passage to the South American country.Banging pots and pans and chanting slogans, the protesters said they wanted the U.K. to end their siege on the Australian whistleblower.Assange has been living in the embassys cramped quarters for more than two months since fleeing there to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations.Protesters said they were concerned that Sweden would extradite Assange to the Untied States, where they said he could face the death penalty. That he (Assange) be free from persecution, they (the U.S.) are threatening Julian Assange with the death penalty. I know that if he is captured, they (Sweden) will extradite him to the U.S.A., and there we know what is waiting for this courageous journalist, said Assange supporter, Gabriel Chiluisa. The protest comes ten days after Ecuadorean leftist leader Rafael Correa granted Assange asylum in the South American country. With British authorities refusing to recognise Assanges asylum status, diplomatic tensions came to a head after the UK government threatened to storm the South American nations London embassy to arrest the Australian.Lambasting the threat, protesters are demanding an official apology from the British government. They (U.K) has not said sorry. They have not withdrawn that letter. So I think that this is the position of all the world, not just Ecuador. All countries in the world are annoyed by the decision by the British. With this posturing which is out of date, which upsets people. The people want an apology from the British Government, said protester Tania Barahona. |
US Gulf states declare states of emergency over Isaac Posted: The governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama issued their declarations as Florida, which declared a state of emergency a day earlier, was drenched by heavy rains and strong winds from the storm. The declarations make funds available to respond to the storm and order government agencies to implement emergency preparedness plans.A hurricane warning was in effect east of Morgan City Louisiana to Destin, Florida, including metropolitan New Orleans, which is marking the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city and killed around 1,800 people. The storm is forecast to hit as a category two hurricane on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale -- with top winds swirling at 96-110 miles (83-95 kilometers) per hour -- when it makes landfall. We are encouraging everyone to get prepared now to ensure that you have an evacuation plan in place, plenty of water, non-perishable food items, hygiene supplies, sufficient clothing and any prescription medications you or your family may need in the event of the storm, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said in a statement. As with every storm, we always hope for the best and prepare for the worst. He recommended voluntary evacuations within the hurricane watch area, which includes low-lying areas, those zones outside of levee protection and areas south of the Intracoastal Waterway.Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said he was mobilizing the resources that his community needed as the storm approached.I am urging everyone to take precautions now, monitor weather warnings and be prepared for whatever Isaac may bring, he said.Bentley ordered mandatory evacuations in parts of Mobile and Baldwin Counties.Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Art Faulkner urged residents to make preparations now for the potential impact of strong winds and heavy rains. The National Hurricane Center has also issued both a tropical storm warning and a hurricane warning for multiple counties in Mississippi.Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant authorized the states National Guard to deploy 10 members of its civil support team to coastal counties, and urged residents to finalize their preparations. We are taking the threat of impact from Isaac seriously, and we are working to ensure that Mississippi is well-prepared, Bryant said.Sound preparations will enable us to ramp up our response without losing time if the situation worsens. |
Oil companies pull back as Isaac roars toward Gulf Posted: Oil companies scrambled out of the path of Tropical Storm Isaac, withdrawing offshore workers and cutting oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico.By mid-day Sunday, the U.S. government said that daily oil production in the Gulf was down 24 percent and natural gas production was off 8 percent.Isaac, already carrying winds of more than 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) an hour, was expected to cross the Florida Keys by late afternoon. The storm will likely pick up strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico and strike as a dangerous Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.Noting that the storm was moving west and threatening to grow more powerful, energy giant BP evacuated all its installations and temporarily halted production in the Gulf Sunday. Earlier, it had pulled workers from its massive Thunder Horse platform in the eastern Gulf.Royal Dutch Shell is withdrawing all workers and suspending production in the eastern Gulf. It is pulling out all but essential personnel and cutting production in the central Gulf.Apache Corp., a Houston oil services company, is withdrawing 750 workers and contractors from its installations in the eastern Gulf. It is also cutting production of oil and natural gas. Other energy companies have also been evacuating their platforms and rigs in the Gulf.Murphy Oil Corp., based in El Dorado, Arkansas, said Sunday that it is pulling out all workers and suspending operations in the Gulf.Overall, oil companies pulled workers off 39 (7 percent) of 596 production platforms and eight (11 percent) of 76 Gulf oil rigs, the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement reported Sunday.Former energy trader Stephen Schork, who now edits a report on the oil industry, worries that the storm will be a repeat of Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Gustav in 2008, damaging Gulf refineries and pipelines and disrupting oil tanker traffic. But Fadel Gheit, oil analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., says that the explosion that rocked an oil refinery in Venezuela on Saturday, killing 26 people, will likely have a bigger impact than Isaac. It could drive up gasoline prices and further erode consumer confidence and derail (the) economic recovery. |

Iran urges NAM to take stand against Western sanctions Posted: Non-Aligned Movement leaders should take a stand against Western sanctions at a Tehran summit at the end of the month, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Sunday, adding that many NAM members backed Irans nuclear programme. The NAM should seriously confront unilateral sanctions of certain nations against some members of the NAM, Salehi said in a speech opening days of preparatory meetings for the summit on Thursday and Friday. He asserted that so far, the NAM has condemned these measures.Salehi added that we take this opportunity to thank the NAM for its support backing Irans legitimate rights to nuclear activities.Iran is subject to severe US and EU economic sanctions pressuring it to roll back nuclear activities that many Western governments suspect is aimed at acquiring an atomic weapons break-out capability.Iran denies any such ambition, insisting its programme is exclusively for power generation and medical purposes. It dismisses as illegal six UN resolutions calling on it to suspend all uranium enrichment.Three other NAM members states are also subject to Western sanctions: North Korea, over its own nuclear programme that has created bombs; Syria, over its brutal offensive against opposition groups; and Zimbabwe, over political violence and human rights abuses.Iran, which is taking over the rotating three-year NAM presidency from Egypt, says its hosting of the summit is evidence it is not as internationally isolated as its arch-foe the United States has sought to portray it.Tehran especially wants the NAM summit to take its side in the high-stakes showdown with the United States and its Western allies over its nuclear activities.Regarding our peaceful nuclear programme... we have always said that we are only seeking our legitimate rights to nuclear energy as permitted under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Salehi said.He said Iran was seeking NAM support to have those rights upheld regardless of the repeated demands by the UN Security Council that its activities be curtailed. We are seeking a just solution and not solutions based on the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and other UN entities double standards. We take this opportunity to thank the NAM for its support in this regard, Salehi said. The minister also said he hoped the summit would take a stand against all sorts of terrorism, especially the state-sponsored sort which is backed by Western powers and which last occurred with the assassinations of our nuclear scientists.Underlining the murders of four Iranian nuclear scientists since 2010 -- attributed by Tehran to US, British and Israeli intelligence services -- organisers placed some of the victims blast-shredded cars at the entrance to the venue where the senior officials were meeting. The NAM -- representing nearly two-thirds of the members of the United Nations -- is made up of countries with diverse political goals and interests. It was far from clear whether they would unanimously sign a NAM document supporting Iran in its confrontation with the UN Security Council. The NAM, born at the height of the Cold War as a grouping of nations wanting to be independent of Washington and Moscow, counts 120 members, overwhelmingly developing nations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America. |
Egypt: 76 convicted for attack on Israeli Embassy Posted: A Cairo court has convicted 76 Egyptians on charges linked to last years attack by protesters on the Israeli Embassy.Seventy-five of the defendants received suspended one-year sentences Sunday, while one defendant tried in absentia was given a five-year prison term.In September, thousands of protesters tore down a security wall around a high rise building housing the Israeli Embassy in Cairo and then ransacked its offices. The embassys storming followed the killing of six Egyptian soldiers by Israeli troops who were pursuing Palestinian militants near the Egyptian border. The attack prompted nearly the entire embassy staff to evacuate in the one of the worst crises to hit the two countries relations since their 1979 peace treaty. |
Samsung shares plunges after US Apple patent verdict Posted: Shares in Samsung Electronics opened 6.75 percent lower Monday after a US court fined the South Korean firm $1.05 billion for breaching Apples patents.A jury in San Jose, California ruled Friday that Samsung infringed six Apple patents for smartphones or tablet PCs.Analysts said the judge in the case could later decide to triple the damages because jurors found Samsung acted wilfully. They rejected the Korean firms counterclaims against Apple.Samsung has said it would contest the verdict. The context of the loss in this case is a lot worse than had been expected, including the amount of damages Samsung is now facing, said Hi Investment and Securities analyst Song Myung-Sup.If the ruling leads to a US sales ban on the Samsung products subject to dispute, it will start eating away the companys revenue from the fourth quarter, Song said.Analysts said a key point would be whether the patents battle spreads to Samsung Electronics flagship Galaxy S III phone. The products ruled to have infringed Apples patents are all older models. |
15-year-old Lydia Ko wins in Canada Posted: The 15-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory. She broke the age record of 16 set by Lexi Thompson last September in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama, and is the first amateur winner since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdines Invitational. To break another record, or being in the history, its amazing, and its always awesome to be able to play with the pros, Ko said.In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia at 14 to become the youngest player to win a professional tour event, a mark broken by 14-year-old Brooke Henderson in June in a 36-hole Canadian Womens Tour event in Quebec. Ko also won the U.S. Womens Amateur two weeks ago in Cleveland.I didnt cry after this one, said Ko, but (after) that one I did cry, Ko said, referencing the U.S. Womens Amateur. Yeah, to me, U.S. Amateur is a big event, and obviously this is a huge event as well. But still, as an amateur winning one of the biggest amateur events, I feel like it was a better win even though this one was awesome.Ko finished at 13-under 275 at The Vancouver Golf Club, pulling away with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine. She opened with consecutive 68s and shot a 72 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second.Park chipped in for birdie on the final hole, and Ko closed with a bogey to make it closer. The pressure she was handling is really amazing, Park said. Im really happy for her. Its great for her career and I think I was just lucky to get the winners check today.U.S. Womens Open champion Na Yeon Choi, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin tied for third at 8 under. Na Yeon Choi had a 73, and Chella Choi and Shin shot 71.The glove Ko wore in the final round will be displayed in the World Golf Hall of Fame.To have something thats mine to be up there, its amazing, and it doesnt come down or anything, she said. So it will always remain there, and itll be a good memory. Its been an awesome week.Ko plans to remain an amateur and go to college in the United States, possibly at Stanford. |
