Florida declares emergency as storm Isaac nears

Posted:

Florida declared a state of emergency Saturday as the US state braces for Tropical Storm Isaac just two days before the opening of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.Governor Rick Scott said the executive order was a normal step in preparing for such a storm, adding that the Tampa airport remained open and urging those attending the convention not to cancel their reservations.Floridas emergency responders are ready. And its important that Floridas residents and visitors stay informed, have a plan and make preparations, he said at a press conference. He emphasized, however, that the storm was not expected to disrupt the political proceedings in Tampa, which is north of where forecasters say the full brunt of the storm will be felt.We are going to have a great convention the governor added.Tropical Storm Isaac barreled across Haiti early Saturday, killing at least one person, a young girl, and raising fears of mud slides and flash floods in the impoverished country still rebuilding after a 2010 earthquake. Some 400,000 people still live in makeshift tent camps in and around the capital Port-au-Prince, raising concerns that the death toll could rise after a more complete assessment of the storms damage. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Isaac will likely become a hurricane Sunday and was on track to clip the southern part of the Florida before churning north to the southern US Gulf coast. The storm could bring high winds and heavy rains to Tampa as an estimated 50,000 people -- including top officials -- gather for the convention, which begins on Monday. The gathering will include speeches, parties and pageantry, culminating in former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney formally accepting his partys nomination and laying out his case for denying President Barack Obama a second term during a prime-time address Thursday.

Refinery blast kills 26 in Venezuela, dozens hurt

Posted:

A huge explosion rocked Venezuelas biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 80 others in the deadliest disaster in memory for the countrys key oil industry.Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet its domestic needs as well as its export commitments. At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released.Officials said those killed included a 10-year-old boy, and that 17 of the 26 victims were National Guard troops stationed at a post next to the refinery.President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning in the country. This affects all of us, Chavez said by phone on state television. Its very sad, very painful.Chavez said he ordered a deep investigation to determine what caused the explosion.Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said the authorities tried to save the greatest number of lives.Officials said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where clouds of dark smoke were still billowing in the afternoon. The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said. He said an adjacent National Guard post was severely damaged by the blast, along with nearby homes.

Abbas threatens Iran summit boycott over Hamas

Posted:

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas will boycott the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Iran if his Islamist rival Ismail Haniya of Hamas attends, a minister told AFP on Saturday.President Abbas will not take part in the Non-Aligned summit if Haniya is present, no matter what form his attendance takes, foreign minister Riyad al-Malki said in Ramallah, headquarters of the Palestinian Authority. The row broke out after a Hamas spokesman said Haniya would attend the August 30-31 conference in Tehran in accordance with the invitation from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The statement from Taher al-Nunu, a spokesman for the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip, did not say when Haniya would leave the Palestinian enclave for the conference or give any further details. In Iran, foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Haniya had been invited to the gathering as a special guest.Nunu later insisted that Haniya would travel to Tehran, whether Abu Mazen (Abbas) goes or not, as the prime minister elected by the Palestinian people in January 2006 elections. He did not rule out a joint delegation. If such a proposal comes from Ramallah, we are ready to discuss it, Nunu said.Abbas heads a rival administration based in the West Bank town of Ramallah, and said last month that he had accepted an invitation to attend the NAM summit and make his first visit to the Islamic republic. At a time when (Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor) Lieberman is waging an aggressive political campaign, the invitation to Haniya to attend the NAM summit indicates that Tehran has joined the hostile Israeli chorus, the Palestine Liberation Organisation executive committee said in a statement. On Thursday, Lieberman said Abbas was waging a form of diplomatic terror against Israel that was as dangerous as the violent threat posed by Hamas.Iran is a backer of Hamas which has long been in conflict with Abbass secular Fatah, and the Palestinian president has accused Tehran of trying to stymie attempts between the factions to reconcile. In April 2011, Abbass Fatah and Hamas announced a surprise reconciliation and agreed on the creation of an interim cabinet of independents selected by the two factions, to prepare for elections to take place by May 2012.But the deal has largely stalled, leaving presidential and legislative elections indefinitely postponed, although the Abbas administration has called for local authority polls in the West Bank in October.Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad also criticised Irans invitation to Haniya, calling it a serious escalation against Palestinian unity.

Australia defeat brave Afghanistan by 66 runs

Former world champions Australia defeated a battling Afghanistan team by 66 runs in the first-ever limited overs international between the two sides on Saturday.Australia did well to reach 272-8 in their 50 overs despite some hiccups in the middle overs before overcoming a tough mid-innings resistance by Afghanistan who in the end were bowled out for 206 in 43.5 overs.Michael Clarke hit a 94-ball 75 while Matthew Wade also made 75 off 108 balls to take Australia to a fighting total on a dry Sharjah Stadium pitch in sultry 35-plus degree heat. The match, which started at 6pm local time to avoid the heat and ended early Sunday, was Afghanistans second against a full Test-playing side after they met Pakistan in February this year.Strapping new-ball bowlers Mitchell Starc (4-47) and James Pattinson (3-46) then rattled Afghanistans top order with some vicious short and full length deliveries, dismissing the first four batsmen for 49 runs.Opener Karim Sadiq hit the innings first delivery for a boundary, but Starc then clattered Sadiq on the helmet to fell the batsman before bowling him with a delivery that nipped back sharply.Starc earlier had Javed Ahmedi (nought) in his first over, while at the other end Pattinson dismissed Mohammad Shehzad (11) and skipper Nawroz Mangal (nought) in his sixth over to leave Afghanistan reeling at 49-4.But Asghar Stanikzai, with a 106-ball 66, and Mohammad Nabi, with an aggressive 60-ball 46, put on an impressive 86-run stand for the fifth wicket to push Australia onto the back foot.Nabi hit four towering sixes and three boundaries while Stanikzai sent six balls to the ropes. But Afghanistans resistance waned once both fell in the space of five overs.Nabi became one of Mitchell Johnsons two wickets while Clarke pulled off a sensational catch at mid-wicket off Pattinson to end Stanikzais knock.Clarke praised his fast bowling trio. They did well to get us wickets but I must give credit to the batsmen as well for getting us to 272, said Clarke. It was nice to have a good start to the tour, obviously with the heat and dry pitch.Mangal said he was satisfied with his teams performance. Our top order didnt put on runs but on the whole I am satisfied with the performance as the margin of defeat isnt big, said Mangal.Earlier Australia, who lost opener David Warner (24) to seamer Shapoor Zadran in the seventh over, were coasting along with Clarke and Wade adding an invluable 131 runs for the second wicket. But Australia lost four wickets in the space of 42 runs as off-spinner Nabi (2-50) broke the stand by catching Wade off a return drive from his own bowling.Wade, opening the innings in the absence of Shane Watson who is not on the tour because of injury, hit two fours and a towering six.In his next over, Nabi had debutant Glenn Maxwell caught at long-on for two to leave Australia at 172-3.Clarke, who hit three boundaries and a six, was stumped off spinner Samiullah Shinwari as he jumped out of the crease but missed the ball.Michael Hussey (49) and George Bailey (23) added a rapid 53 for the sixth wicket in just five overs to ensure Australia put up a fighting total.Husseys 37-ball knock had three sixes and two fours.Sadiq took wickets in the last over to finish with 2-22.Australia will now play three one-day matches, followed by as many Twenty20 internationals, against Pakistan, with the first encounter in Sharjah on Tuesday.

Tomatoes slash risk of killer diseases

Posted:

Tomatoes are widely available, cost-effective, and people of all ages and cultures like them. Now, a review research has shown that eating more tomatoes and tomato products could make people healthier and slash their risk of developing killer diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.Researchers Britt Burton-Freeman and Kristin Reimers of the National Centre for Food Safety and Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology and ConAgra Foods, Inc looked at the current research to discover the role tomato products play in health and disease risk reduction. They found that tomatoes are the biggest source of powerful antioxidant lycopene.Unlike nutrients in most fresh fruits and vegetables, lycopene has even greater potency after cooking and processing.Tomatoes also contain other protective mechanisms, such as antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory functions. The researchers also found a link between eating tomatoes and a lower risk of certain cancers as well as other conditions, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, ultraviolet light-induced skin damage, and even cognitive dysfunction.Leveraging emerging science about tomatoes and tomato products may be one simple and effective strategy to help individuals increase vegetable intake, leading to improved overall eating patterns, and ultimately, better health, said the authors.Research underscores the relationship between consuming tomatoes and reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, and other conditions, they said. The evidence also suggests that consumption of tomatoes should be recommended because of the nutritional benefits and because it may be a simple and effective strategy for increasing overall vegetable intake, they concluded.

Hepatitis G may trigger liver cancer

Posted:

They claim that transmission of the virus through donated blood that was not screened for the virus as well as infection through other routes has led to an increase in cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.Intriguingly, some evidence suggests that co-infection with the AIDS virus, HIV, somehow enhances the immune system in patients. However, it is the effects of the virus on the livers of otherwise healthy patients that is of concern to Mughis Uddin Ahmed of the King Abdulaziz Hospital (NGHA) in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. He points out that since the FDA declared the virus not to cause health problems to humans in 1997, no donated blood has been screened for this virus. However, Mughis Uddin Ahmed has carried out a review of the scientific literature for the last 16 years that show the virus to be quite prevalent around the globe. Moreover, there is a correlation with infection with this virus and hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver and it is possibly linked to hepatocellular carcinoma. He also found an apparent link with hematological disorders and hematological malignancies. The study has been published in the international journal of Immunological Studies.
