Afghans met key Taliban leader held in Pakistan

KABUL/ISLAMABAD, Aug 12: Afghan officials have held secret talks with the Taliban’s former second-in-command who is in detention in Pakistan in a move which could help rekindle stalled peace talks with the militants, according to senior officials from both countries.
Afghan officials have often seen Pakistan as a reluctant partner in attempts to broker talks with the Taliban but its decision to grant access to Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar may signal Islamabad’s willingness to play a more active role....

Rs26bn saved as Ogra withdraws order

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12: In view of the Supreme Court hearing cases of corruption in the gas sector, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has withdrawn a controversial order which allowed a revenue of tens of billions of rupees to a private gas firm and promised four other to draw a follow-up windfall.The de-notification of Ogra’s order will save about Rs26 billion to the public exchequer which was to be paid to Dewan Petroleum, but stopped by the Lahore High Court and then by the Supreme Court.
Early this week while hearing cases of corruption in Ogra during the tenure of former chairman Tauqir Sadiq appointed by the current government, the apex court asked the National Accountability Bureau whether the authority had withdrawn the order and if not why action should not be taken against NAB and Ogra authorities...

PPP won’t take Raja’s removal ‘lying down’: Gilani

LAHORE, Aug 12: With the Supreme Court taking up the government’s review petition in the NRO case on Aug 15, PPP leader and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani warned on Sunday that if Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf was also sent packing by the court the party would not take the verdict ‘lying down’.
Mr Gilani, who himself was disqualified by the Supreme Court and asked to vacate the Prime Minister’s House on June 26 for failing to implement the NRO case, was talking to reporters...
