Massive blaze hits east London Posted: Firefighters battled a massive blaze at an east London recycling center Sunday as the city prepared for the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Officials said the blaze was the biggest theyd seen in the city for years, but that the games would in no way be affected. The fire about 7 miles (11 kilometers) east of the Olympic Park was brought under control by late Sunday. A London Fire Brigade statement said the whole of the 50 meter by 100 meter (165 feet by 330 feet), single-story recycling center had burned and that, at one point, a plume of smoke could be seen across the capital.Weve not seen a fire of this size in London for several years, London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said. Its certainly a dramatic end to the Olympics for the London Fire Brigade. The statement said more than 200 firefighters drawn from across the city had been sent to fight the fire in Dagenham, an industrial, riverside area at the very edge of the capital.I would like to reassure people that we are still able to attend incidents across the capital and the fire cover were providing at the Olympic venues has not been affected, Dobson said.In a message later posted to Twitter, the fire service said the Dagenham fire had been contained. Well be there during the night damping down, the tweet said. An Olympic effort by our crews. Enjoy the Closing Ceremony. The cause of the fire wasnt yet known. No injuries have been reported.A spokesman said the fire brigade didnt keep detailed logs on the size of one blaze or another, but mainly thought in terms of the personnel and equipment needed to tackle each fire. He said the last comparable fires he could remember included the inferno that broke out at Londons Camden Market in 2008 and a blaze that gutted the New Look store on Oxford Street in 2007.He spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with office policy. |
Bolt considers Australian cricket offer Posted: Olympic sprint star Usain Bolt has told Australian media he is considering an offer from former test leg-spinner Shane Warne to play Twenty20 cricket in Australias Big Bash League next season. The Melbourne Stars franchise, for which Warne is the marquee player, confirmed it has opened negotiations with Bolt through his management company.Bolt, who defended his 100 meters and 200 meters titles in London to take his Olympics gold medal tally to six, played junior cricket in Jamaica and has expressed a love for the sport. He told Australias Channel Nine if I get the chance I will definitely try because I know its going to be a lot of fun. I dont know how good I am. I will probably have to get a lot of practice in. |
Pietersen left out of England squad to play SA Posted: Kevin Pietersen was left out of Englands squad on Sunday for the third test against South Africa after selectors said he failed to give assurances over phone text messages he allegedly sent to the South Africans which criticized his own teammates.Naturally Im hugely disappointed, Pietersen said in a statement. The fact is I love England, and I love cricket.Pietersen, who scored 149 in the second test, failed to make Englands 13-man squad for the test which starts at Lords on Thursday. The 32-year-old Pietersen reportedly sent the text messages during the drawn second test at Headingley.During the past week we have held several discussions with Kevin Pietersen and his advisers. Following a constructive meeting it was agreed that a number of actions needed to be completed to re-engage Kevin within the England dressing room, England cricket managing director Hugh Morris said.A fundamental item was to confirm publicly that no derogatory texts had been sent by Kevin to the South African team. This has not been forthcoming despite clear timelines being set to allow the selectors to pick the squad. The South African-born Pietersen had threatened to quit test cricket after the second test, blaming politics and leaks to the media while claiming it was tough being me. He reversed his position on Saturday in a video put on YouTube and made himself available again for his adopted country in all formats.Needing a win in the third test to stay top ranked in the world, Englands decision to drop its most naturally talented batsman took some observers by surprise. It is not often a player gets 149 in a test match and is left out the next week, former England captain Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports News.Pietersen retired from one-day internationals earlier this year, and as a consequence England ruled him out of the Twenty20 side to defend its world title in Sri Lanka in September. He now faces a tough challenge to play for his country again at test level. The success of the England team has been built on a unity of purpose and trust, Morris said. Whilst we have made every attempt to find a solution to enable Kevin to be selected we have sadly had to conclude that, in the best interest of the team, he will miss the Lords test.Pietersen has played 88 tests for England since his debut in 2005 with 7,076 runs at an average of 49.48 and a highest score of 227.South Africa leads the three-match series 1-0. |

US win medal count, and British celebrate as well Posted: By any measure, the 2012 London Games will be considered a booming success for the United States. When the U.S. mens basketball team won the Olympic title Sunday, it clinched the 46th gold medal for Americans in London, marking the highest total the nation has ever taken home from a road Olympics. The U.S. winners of 104 medals overall in London, easily the most of any nation won 45 golds at Paris in 1924 and Mexico City in 1968.It means everything, U.S. basketball player LeBron James said. The final numbers for the Americans in London wont go down as record-setting, not coming close to the 83 gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and the 239 total from St. Louis in 1904, when U.S. athletes won roughly seven out of every eight medals awarded.Different eras, different dynamics. Many thought this would be the Olympics where the Chinese went home with more medals than the Americans, and that didnt come close to happening. China won 38 golds, its most ever on foreign soil, but finished 17 medals behind the U.S. overall and took a major step back from when it served as the host team four years ago.We are immensely proud of the success that our athletes had in London, U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said Sunday.Host country Britain also had plenty of celebrate at these games: 29 gold medals, 65 medals overall, riding the wave of home-field energy for its best Olympic showing in more than a century to deliver on a promise of greatness in 2012 and possibly set the stage for continued emergence down the road. |

The Swedes then came within one goal of drawling level three times in the second half but were unable to keep momentum against a French defense anchored by Didier Dinart, regarded as the worlds best backline player. The loss gave Sweden its fourth Olympic silver medal since 1992, having never won gold.
